When interacting with Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG)-based conversational agents, the users must carefully craft their queries to be understood correctly. Yet, understanding the system's capabilities can be challenging for the users, leading to ambiguous questions that necessitate further clarification. This work aims to bridge the gap by developing a suggestion question generator. To generate suggestion questions, our approach involves utilizing dynamic context, which includes both dynamic few-shot examples and dynamically retrieved contexts. Through experiments, we show that the dynamic contexts approach can generate better suggestion questions as compared to other prompting approaches.

The increasing adoption of Extended Reality (XR) in various applications underscores the need for secure and user-friendly authentication methods. However, existing methods can disrupt the immersive experience in XR settings, or suffer from higher false acceptance rates. In this paper, we introduce a multimodal biometric authentication system that combines eye movement and brainwave patterns, as captured by consumer-grade low-fidelity sensors. Our multimodal authentication exploits the non-invasive and hands-free properties of eye movement and brainwaves to provide a seamless XR user experience and enhanced security as well. Using synchronized eye and brainwave data collected from 30 participants through consumer-grade devices, we investigated whether twin neural networks can utilize these biometrics for identity verification. Our multimodal authentication system yields an excellent Equal Error Rate (EER) of 0.298\%, which means an 83.6\% reduction in EER compared to the single eye movement modality or a 93.9\% reduction in EER compared to the single brainwave modality.

Information Extraction processes in handwritten documents tend to rely on obtaining an automatic transcription and performing Named Entity Recognition (NER) over such transcription. For this reason, in publicly available datasets, the performance of the systems is usually evaluated with metrics particular to each dataset. Moreover, most of the metrics employed are sensitive to reading order errors. Therefore, they do not reflect the expected final application of the system and introduce biases in more complex documents. In this paper, we propose and publicly release a set of reading order independent metrics tailored to Information Extraction evaluation in handwritten documents. In our experimentation, we perform an in-depth analysis of the behavior of the metrics to recommend what we consider to be the minimal set of metrics to evaluate a task correctly.

Second Moment Methods (SMMs) are developed that are consistent with the Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) spatial discretization of the discrete ordinates (or \Sn) transport equations. The low-order (LO) diffusion system of equations is discretized with fully consistent \Pone, Local Discontinuous Galerkin (LDG), and Interior Penalty (IP) methods. A discrete residual approach is used to derive SMM correction terms that make each of the LO systems consistent with the high-order (HO) discretization. We show that the consistent methods are more accurate and have better solution quality than independently discretized LO systems, that they preserve the diffusion limit, and that the LDG and IP consistent SMMs can be scalably solved in parallel on a challenging, multi-material benchmark problem.

Recent developments in long-context large language models have attracted considerable attention. Yet, their real-world applications are often hindered by ineffective context information use. This work shows that structuring training data to increase semantic interdependence is an effective strategy for optimizing context utilization. To this end, we introduce Structured Packing for Long Context (SPLiCe), a method for creating training examples by using information retrieval methods to collate mutually relevant documents into a single training context. We empirically validate SPLiCe on large $3$B and $7$B models, showing perplexity improvements and better long-context utilization on downstream tasks. Remarkably, already relatively short fine-tuning with SPLiCe is enough to attain these benefits. Additionally, the comprehensive study of SPLiCe reveals intriguing transfer effects such as training on code data leading to perplexity improvements on text data.

Bipedal robots are garnering increasing global attention due to their potential applications and advancements in artificial intelligence, particularly in Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL). While DRL has driven significant progress in bipedal locomotion, developing a comprehensive and unified framework capable of adeptly performing a wide range of tasks remains a challenge. This survey systematically categorizes, compares, and summarizes existing DRL frameworks for bipedal locomotion, organizing them into end-to-end and hierarchical control schemes. End-to-end frameworks are assessed based on their learning approaches, whereas hierarchical frameworks are dissected into layers that utilize either learning-based methods or traditional model-based approaches. This survey provides a detailed analysis of the composition, capabilities, strengths, and limitations of each framework type. Furthermore, we identify critical research gaps and propose future directions aimed at achieving a more integrated and efficient framework for bipedal locomotion, with potential broad applications in everyday life.

Context: Navigating the knowledge of Stack Overflow (SO) remains challenging. To make the posts vivid to users, SO allows users to write and edit posts with Markdown or HTML so that users can leverage various formatting styles (e.g., bold, italic, and code) to highlight the important information. Nonetheless, there have been limited studies on the highlighted information. Objective: We carried out the first large-scale exploratory study on the information highlighted in SO answers in our recent study. To extend our previous study, we develop approaches to automatically recommend highlighted content with formatting styles using neural network architectures initially designed for the Named Entity Recognition task. Method: In this paper, we studied 31,169,429 answers of Stack Overflow. For training recommendation models, we choose CNN-based and BERT-based models for each type of formatting (i.e., Bold, Italic, Code, and Heading) using the information highlighting dataset we collected from SO answers. Results: Our models achieve a precision ranging from 0.50 to 0.72 for different formatting types. It is easier to build a model to recommend Code than other types. Models for text formatting types (i.e., Heading, Bold, and Italic) suffer low recall. Our analysis of failure cases indicates that the majority of the failure cases are due to missing identification. One explanation is that the models are easy to learn the frequent highlighted words while struggling to learn less frequent words (i.g., long-tail knowledge). Conclusion: Our findings suggest that it is possible to develop recommendation models for highlighting information for answers with different formatting styles on Stack Overflow.

Collaborative perception in automated vehicles leverages the exchange of information between agents, aiming to elevate perception results. Previous camera-based collaborative 3D perception methods typically employ 3D bounding boxes or bird's eye views as representations of the environment. However, these approaches fall short in offering a comprehensive 3D environmental prediction. To bridge this gap, we introduce the first method for collaborative 3D semantic occupancy prediction. Particularly, it improves local 3D semantic occupancy predictions by hybrid fusion of (i) semantic and occupancy task features, and (ii) compressed orthogonal attention features shared between vehicles. Additionally, due to the lack of a collaborative perception dataset designed for semantic occupancy prediction, we augment a current collaborative perception dataset to include 3D collaborative semantic occupancy labels for a more robust evaluation. The experimental findings highlight that: (i) our collaborative semantic occupancy predictions excel above the results from single vehicles by over 30%, and (ii) models anchored on semantic occupancy outpace state-of-the-art collaborative 3D detection techniques in subsequent perception applications, showcasing enhanced accuracy and enriched semantic-awareness in road environments.

The success of AI models relies on the availability of large, diverse, and high-quality datasets, which can be challenging to obtain due to data scarcity, privacy concerns, and high costs. Synthetic data has emerged as a promising solution by generating artificial data that mimics real-world patterns. This paper provides an overview of synthetic data research, discussing its applications, challenges, and future directions. We present empirical evidence from prior art to demonstrate its effectiveness and highlight the importance of ensuring its factuality, fidelity, and unbiasedness. We emphasize the need for responsible use of synthetic data to build more powerful, inclusive, and trustworthy language models.

Graphs are important data representations for describing objects and their relationships, which appear in a wide diversity of real-world scenarios. As one of a critical problem in this area, graph generation considers learning the distributions of given graphs and generating more novel graphs. Owing to their wide range of applications, generative models for graphs, which have a rich history, however, are traditionally hand-crafted and only capable of modeling a few statistical properties of graphs. Recent advances in deep generative models for graph generation is an important step towards improving the fidelity of generated graphs and paves the way for new kinds of applications. This article provides an extensive overview of the literature in the field of deep generative models for graph generation. Firstly, the formal definition of deep generative models for the graph generation and the preliminary knowledge are provided. Secondly, taxonomies of deep generative models for both unconditional and conditional graph generation are proposed respectively; the existing works of each are compared and analyzed. After that, an overview of the evaluation metrics in this specific domain is provided. Finally, the applications that deep graph generation enables are summarized and five promising future research directions are highlighted.

Music streaming services heavily rely on recommender systems to improve their users' experience, by helping them navigate through a large musical catalog and discover new songs, albums or artists. However, recommending relevant and personalized content to new users, with few to no interactions with the catalog, is challenging. This is commonly referred to as the user cold start problem. In this applied paper, we present the system recently deployed on the music streaming service Deezer to address this problem. The solution leverages a semi-personalized recommendation strategy, based on a deep neural network architecture and on a clustering of users from heterogeneous sources of information. We extensively show the practical impact of this system and its effectiveness at predicting the future musical preferences of cold start users on Deezer, through both offline and online large-scale experiments. Besides, we publicly release our code as well as anonymized usage data from our experiments. We hope that this release of industrial resources will benefit future research on user cold start recommendation.
