Owing to the promising ability of saving hardware cost and spectrum resources, integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) is regarded as a revolutionary technology for future sixth-generation (6G) networks. The mono-static ISAC systems considered in most of existing works can only achieve limited sensing performance due to the single observation angle and easily blocked transmission links, which motivates researchers to investigate cooperative ISAC networks. In order to further improve the degrees of freedom (DoFs) of cooperative ISAC networks, the transmitter-receiver selection, i.e., base station (BS) mode selection problem, is meaningful to be studied. However, to our best knowledge, this crucial problem has not been extensively studied in existing works. In this paper, we consider the joint BS mode selection, transmit beamforming, and receive filter design for cooperative cell-free ISAC networks, where multi-BSs cooperatively serve communication users and detect targets. We aim to maximize the sum of sensing signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) under the communication SINR requirements, total power budget, and constraints on the numbers of transmit/receive BSs. An efficient joint beamforming design algorithm and three different heuristic BS mode selection methods are proposed to solve this non-convex NP-hard problem. Simulation results demonstrates the advantages of cooperative ISAC networks, the importance of BS mode selection, and the effectiveness of our proposed algorithms.

For many data-processing applications, a comprehensive set of efficient operations for the management of priority values is required. Indexed priority queues are particularly promising to satisfy this requirement by design. In this work, we report the design and analysis of an efficient indexed priority queue with a comprehensive set of operations. In particular, $\mathtt{insert}$, $\mathtt{delete}$ and $\mathtt{decrease}$ all run in expected $O(\log^{*}{n})$ time, while $\mathtt{increase}$ is conjectured by means of Monte Carlo simulations to run in expected $O(\log\log{n})$ time. The space complexity as well as the time complexity for the construction of the empty heap data structure is $O(n)$. For certain massive computational problems, such as specific analyses of extremely large graphs and (chemical) simulations, this heap system may exhibit considerable utility.

With the recent significant advancements in large multi-modal models (LMMs), the importance of their grounding capability in visual chat is increasingly recognized. Despite recent efforts to enable LMMs to support grounding, their capabilities for grounding and chat are usually separate, and their chat performance drops dramatically when asked to ground. The problem is the lack of a dataset for grounded visual chat (GVC). Existing grounding datasets only contain short captions. To address this issue, we have created GVC data that allows for the combination of grounding and chat capabilities. To better evaluate the GVC capabilities, we have introduced a benchmark called Grounding-Bench. Additionally, we have proposed a model design that can support GVC and various types of visual prompts by connecting segmentation models with language models. Experimental results demonstrate that our model outperforms other LMMs on Grounding-Bench. Furthermore, our model achieves competitive performance on classic grounding benchmarks like RefCOCO/+/g and Flickr30K Entities. Control barrier functions (CBF) have become popular as a safety filter to guarantee the safety of nonlinear dynamical systems for arbitrary inputs. However, it is difficult to construct functions that satisfy the CBF constraints for high relative degree systems with input constraints. To address these challenges, recent work has explored learning CBFs using neural networks via neural CBF (NCBF). However, such methods face difficulties when scaling to higher dimensional systems under input constraints. In this work, we first identify challenges that NCBFs face during training. Next, to address these challenges, we propose policy neural CBF (PNCBF), a method of constructing CBFs by learning the value function of a nominal policy, and show that the value function of the maximum-over-time cost is a CBF. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our method in simulation on a variety of systems ranging from toy linear systems to an F-16 jet with a 16-dimensional state space. Finally, we validate our approach on a two-agent quadcopter system on hardware under tight input constraints.

With the development of the Internet of Things (IoT), certain IoT devices have the capability to not only accomplish their own tasks but also simultaneously assist other resource-constrained devices. Therefore, this paper considers a device-assisted mobile edge computing system that leverages auxiliary IoT devices to alleviate the computational burden on the edge computing server and enhance the overall system performance. In this study, computationally intensive tasks are decomposed into multiple partitions, and each task partition can be processed in parallel on an IoT device or the edge server. The objective of this research is to develop an efficient online algorithm that addresses the joint optimization of task partitioning and parallel scheduling under time-varying system states, posing challenges to conventional numerical optimization methods. To address these challenges, a framework called online task partitioning action and parallel scheduling policy generation (OTPPS) is proposed, which is based on deep reinforcement learning (DRL). Specifically, the framework leverages a deep neural network (DNN) to learn the optimal partitioning action for each task by mapping input states. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that the remaining parallel scheduling problem exhibits NP-hard complexity when considering a specific task partitioning action. To address this subproblem, a fair and delay-minimized task scheduling (FDMTS) algorithm is designed. Extensive evaluation results demonstrate that OTPPS achieves near-optimal average delay performance and consistently high fairness levels in various environmental states compared to other baseline schemes.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is commonly used for brain tumor segmentation, which is critical for patient evaluation and treatment planning. To reduce the labor and expertise required for labeling, weakly-supervised semantic segmentation (WSSS) methods with class activation mapping (CAM) have been proposed. However, existing CAM methods suffer from low resolution due to strided convolution and pooling layers, resulting in inaccurate predictions. In this study, we propose a novel CAM method, Attentive Multiple-Exit CAM (AME-CAM), that extracts activation maps from multiple resolutions to hierarchically aggregate and improve prediction accuracy. We evaluate our method on the BraTS 2021 dataset and show that it outperforms state-of-the-art methods.

Data-driven machine learning approaches are being increasingly used to solve partial differential equations (PDEs). They have shown particularly striking successes when training an operator, which takes as input a PDE in some family, and outputs its solution. However, the architectural design space, especially given structural knowledge of the PDE family of interest, is still poorly understood. We seek to remedy this gap by studying the benefits of weight-tied neural network architectures for steady-state PDEs. To achieve this, we first demonstrate that the solution of most steady-state PDEs can be expressed as a fixed point of a non-linear operator. Motivated by this observation, we propose FNO-DEQ, a deep equilibrium variant of the FNO architecture that directly solves for the solution of a steady-state PDE as the infinite-depth fixed point of an implicit operator layer using a black-box root solver and differentiates analytically through this fixed point resulting in $\mathcal{O}(1)$ training memory. Our experiments indicate that FNO-DEQ-based architectures outperform FNO-based baselines with $4\times$ the number of parameters in predicting the solution to steady-state PDEs such as Darcy Flow and steady-state incompressible Navier-Stokes. Finally, we show FNO-DEQ is more robust when trained with datasets with more noisy observations than the FNO-based baselines, demonstrating the benefits of using appropriate inductive biases in architectural design for different neural network based PDE solvers. Further, we show a universal approximation result that demonstrates that FNO-DEQ can approximate the solution to any steady-state PDE that can be written as a fixed point equation.

Multimodality Representation Learning, as a technique of learning to embed information from different modalities and their correlations, has achieved remarkable success on a variety of applications, such as Visual Question Answering (VQA), Natural Language for Visual Reasoning (NLVR), and Vision Language Retrieval (VLR). Among these applications, cross-modal interaction and complementary information from different modalities are crucial for advanced models to perform any multimodal task, e.g., understand, recognize, retrieve, or generate optimally. Researchers have proposed diverse methods to address these tasks. The different variants of transformer-based architectures performed extraordinarily on multiple modalities. This survey presents the comprehensive literature on the evolution and enhancement of deep learning multimodal architectures to deal with textual, visual and audio features for diverse cross-modal and modern multimodal tasks. This study summarizes the (i) recent task-specific deep learning methodologies, (ii) the pretraining types and multimodal pretraining objectives, (iii) from state-of-the-art pretrained multimodal approaches to unifying architectures, and (iv) multimodal task categories and possible future improvements that can be devised for better multimodal learning. Moreover, we prepare a dataset section for new researchers that covers most of the benchmarks for pretraining and finetuning. Finally, major challenges, gaps, and potential research topics are explored. With the breakthrough of AlphaGo, deep reinforcement learning becomes a recognized technique for solving sequential decision-making problems. Despite its reputation, data inefficiency caused by its trial and error learning mechanism makes deep reinforcement learning hard to be practical in a wide range of areas. Plenty of methods have been developed for sample efficient deep reinforcement learning, such as environment modeling, experience transfer, and distributed modifications, amongst which, distributed deep reinforcement learning has shown its potential in various applications, such as human-computer gaming, and intelligent transportation. In this paper, we conclude the state of this exciting field, by comparing the classical distributed deep reinforcement learning methods, and studying important components to achieve efficient distributed learning, covering single player single agent distributed deep reinforcement learning to the most complex multiple players multiple agents distributed deep reinforcement learning. Furthermore, we review recently released toolboxes that help to realize distributed deep reinforcement learning without many modifications of their non-distributed versions. By analyzing their strengths and weaknesses, a multi-player multi-agent distributed deep reinforcement learning toolbox is developed and released, which is further validated on Wargame, a complex environment, showing usability of the proposed toolbox for multiple players and multiple agents distributed deep reinforcement learning under complex games. Finally, we try to point out challenges and future trends, hoping this brief review can provide a guide or a spark for researchers who are interested in distributed deep reinforcement learning.

Face recognition technology has advanced significantly in recent years due largely to the availability of large and increasingly complex training datasets for use in deep learning models. These datasets, however, typically comprise images scraped from news sites or social media platforms and, therefore, have limited utility in more advanced security, forensics, and military applications. These applications require lower resolution, longer ranges, and elevated viewpoints. To meet these critical needs, we collected and curated the first and second subsets of a large multi-modal biometric dataset designed for use in the research and development (R&D) of biometric recognition technologies under extremely challenging conditions. Thus far, the dataset includes more than 350,000 still images and over 1,300 hours of video footage of approximately 1,000 subjects. To collect this data, we used Nikon DSLR cameras, a variety of commercial surveillance cameras, specialized long-rage R&D cameras, and Group 1 and Group 2 UAV platforms. The goal is to support the development of algorithms capable of accurately recognizing people at ranges up to 1,000 m and from high angles of elevation. These advances will include improvements to the state of the art in face recognition and will support new research in the area of whole-body recognition using methods based on gait and anthropometry. This paper describes methods used to collect and curate the dataset, and the dataset's characteristics at the current stage.

Multi-relation Question Answering is a challenging task, due to the requirement of elaborated analysis on questions and reasoning over multiple fact triples in knowledge base. In this paper, we present a novel model called Interpretable Reasoning Network that employs an interpretable, hop-by-hop reasoning process for question answering. The model dynamically decides which part of an input question should be analyzed at each hop; predicts a relation that corresponds to the current parsed results; utilizes the predicted relation to update the question representation and the state of the reasoning process; and then drives the next-hop reasoning. Experiments show that our model yields state-of-the-art results on two datasets. More interestingly, the model can offer traceable and observable intermediate predictions for reasoning analysis and failure diagnosis, thereby allowing manual manipulation in predicting the final answer.
