In utilizing large language models (LLMs) for mathematical reasoning, addressing the errors in the reasoning and calculation present in the generated text by LLMs is a crucial challenge. In this paper, we propose a novel framework that integrates the Chain-of-Thought (CoT) method with an external tool (Python REPL). We discovered that by prompting LLMs to generate structured text in XML-like markup language, we could seamlessly integrate CoT and the external tool and control the undesired behaviors of LLMs. With our approach, LLMs can utilize Python computation to rectify errors within CoT. We applied our method to ChatGPT (GPT-3.5) to solve challenging mathematical problems and demonstrated that combining CoT and Python REPL through the markup language enhances the reasoning capability of LLMs. Our approach enables LLMs to write the markup language and perform advanced mathematical reasoning using only zero-shot prompting.

Recently proposed long-form question answering (QA) systems, supported by large language models (LLMs), have shown promising capabilities. Yet, attributing and verifying their generated abstractive answers can be difficult, and automatically evaluating their accuracy remains an ongoing challenge. In this work, we introduce a new QA task for answering multi-answer questions by summarizing multiple diverse sources in a semi-extractive fashion. Specifically, Semi-extractive Multi-source QA (SEMQA) requires models to output a comprehensive answer, while mixing factual quoted spans -- copied verbatim from given input sources -- and non-factual free-text connectors that glue these spans together into a single cohesive passage. This setting bridges the gap between the outputs of well-grounded but constrained extractive QA systems and more fluent but harder to attribute fully abstractive answers. Particularly, it enables a new mode for language models that leverages their advanced language generation capabilities, while also producing fine in-line attributions by-design that are easy to verify, interpret, and evaluate. To study this task, we create the first dataset of this kind, QuoteSum, with human-written semi-extractive answers to natural and generated questions, and define text-based evaluation metrics. Experimenting with several LLMs in various settings, we find this task to be surprisingly challenging, demonstrating the importance of QuoteSum for developing and studying such consolidation capabilities.

Image captioning studies heavily rely on automatic evaluation metrics such as BLEU and METEOR. However, such n-gram-based metrics have been shown to correlate poorly with human evaluation, leading to the proposal of alternative metrics such as SPICE for English; however, no equivalent metrics have been established for other languages. Therefore, in this study, we propose an automatic evaluation metric called JaSPICE, which evaluates Japanese captions based on scene graphs. The proposed method generates a scene graph from dependencies and the predicate-argument structure, and extends the graph using synonyms. We conducted experiments employing 10 image captioning models trained on STAIR Captions and PFN-PIC and constructed the Shichimi dataset, which contains 103,170 human evaluations. The results showed that our metric outperformed the baseline metrics for the correlation coefficient with the human evaluation.

We introduce Hades, an unsupervised algorithm to detect singularities in data. This algorithm employs a kernel goodness-of-fit test, and as a consequence it is much faster and far more scaleable than the existing topology-based alternatives. Using tools from differential geometry and optimal transport theory, we prove that Hades correctly detects singularities with high probability when the data sample lives on a transverse intersection of equidimensional manifolds. In computational experiments, Hades recovers singularities in synthetically generated data, branching points in road network data, intersection rings in molecular conformation space, and anomalies in image data.

Recent advances in computer vision (CV) and natural language processing have been driven by exploiting big data on practical applications. However, these research fields are still limited by the sheer volume, versatility, and diversity of the available datasets. CV tasks, such as image captioning, which has primarily been carried out on natural images, still struggle to produce accurate and meaningful captions on sketched images often included in scientific and technical documents. The advancement of other tasks such as 3D reconstruction from 2D images requires larger datasets with multiple viewpoints. We introduce DeepPatent2, a large-scale dataset, providing more than 2.7 million technical drawings with 132,890 object names and 22,394 viewpoints extracted from 14 years of US design patent documents. We demonstrate the usefulness of DeepPatent2 with conceptual captioning. We further provide the potential usefulness of our dataset to facilitate other research areas such as 3D image reconstruction and image retrieval.

Latent diffusion models have proven to be state-of-the-art in the creation and manipulation of visual outputs. However, as far as we know, the generation of depth maps jointly with RGB is still limited. We introduce LDM3D-VR, a suite of diffusion models targeting virtual reality development that includes LDM3D-pano and LDM3D-SR. These models enable the generation of panoramic RGBD based on textual prompts and the upscaling of low-resolution inputs to high-resolution RGBD, respectively. Our models are fine-tuned from existing pretrained models on datasets containing panoramic/high-resolution RGB images, depth maps and captions. Both models are evaluated in comparison to existing related methods.

Aspect-based sentiment analysis is a method in natural language processing aimed at identifying and understanding sentiments related to specific aspects of an entity. Aspects are words or phrases that represent an aspect or attribute of a particular entity. Previous research has utilized generative pre-trained language models to perform aspect-based sentiment analysis. LEGO-ABSA is one framework that has successfully employed generative pre-trained language models in aspect-based sentiment analysis, particularly in English. LEGO-ABSA uses a multitask learning and prompting approach to enhance model performance. However, the application of this approach has not been done in the context of Bahasa Indonesia. Therefore, this research aims to implement the multitask learning and prompting approach in aspect-based sentiment analysis for Bahasa Indonesia using generative pre-trained language models. In this study, the Indo LEGO-ABSA model is developed, which is an aspect-based sentiment analysis model utilizing generative pre-trained language models and trained with multitask learning and prompting. Indo LEGO-ABSA is trained with a hotel domain dataset in the Indonesian language. The obtained results include an f1-score of 79.55% for the Aspect Sentiment Triplet Extraction task, 86.09% for Unified Aspect-based Sentiment Analysis, 79.85% for Aspect Opinion Pair Extraction, 87.45% for Aspect Term Extraction, and 88.09% for Opinion Term Extraction. Indo LEGO-ABSA adopts the LEGO-ABSA framework that employs the T5 model, specifically mT5, by applying multitask learning to train all tasks within aspect-based sentiment analysis.

Dynamic shape computations have become critical in modern machine learning workloads, especially in emerging large language models. The success of these models has driven demand for deploying them to a diverse set of backend environments. In this paper, we present Relax, a compiler abstraction for optimizing end-to-end dynamic machine learning workloads. Relax introduces first-class symbolic shape annotations to track dynamic shape computations globally across the program. It also introduces a cross-level abstraction that encapsulates computational graphs, loop-level tensor programs, and library calls in a single representation to enable cross-level optimizations. We build an end-to-end compilation framework using the proposed approach to optimize dynamic shape models. Experimental results on large language models show that Relax delivers performance competitive with state-of-the-art hand-optimized systems across platforms and enables deployment of emerging dynamic models to a broader set of environments, including mobile phones, embedded devices, and web browsers.

The emergence of large language models (LLMs) has substantially influenced natural language processing, demonstrating exceptional results across various tasks. In this study, we employ ``Introspective Tips" to facilitate LLMs in self-optimizing their decision-making. By introspectively examining trajectories, LLM refines its policy by generating succinct and valuable tips. Our method enhances the agent's performance in both few-shot and zero-shot learning situations by considering three essential scenarios: learning from the agent's past experiences, integrating expert demonstrations, and generalizing across diverse games. Importantly, we accomplish these improvements without fine-tuning the LLM parameters; rather, we adjust the prompt to generalize insights from the three aforementioned situations. Our framework not only supports but also emphasizes the advantage of employing LLM in in-contxt decision-making. Experiments involving over 100 games in TextWorld illustrate the superior performance of our approach.

Conventionally, spatiotemporal modeling network and its complexity are the two most concentrated research topics in video action recognition. Existing state-of-the-art methods have achieved excellent accuracy regardless of the complexity meanwhile efficient spatiotemporal modeling solutions are slightly inferior in performance. In this paper, we attempt to acquire both efficiency and effectiveness simultaneously. First of all, besides traditionally treating H x W x T video frames as space-time signal (viewing from the Height-Width spatial plane), we propose to also model video from the other two Height-Time and Width-Time planes, to capture the dynamics of video thoroughly. Secondly, our model is designed based on 2D CNN backbones and model complexity is well kept in mind by design. Specifically, we introduce a novel multi-view fusion (MVF) module to exploit video dynamics using separable convolution for efficiency. It is a plug-and-play module and can be inserted into off-the-shelf 2D CNNs to form a simple yet effective model called MVFNet. Moreover, MVFNet can be thought of as a generalized video modeling framework and it can specialize to be existing methods such as C2D, SlowOnly, and TSM under different settings. Extensive experiments are conducted on popular benchmarks (i.e., Something-Something V1 & V2, Kinetics, UCF-101, and HMDB-51) to show its superiority. The proposed MVFNet can achieve state-of-the-art performance with 2D CNN's complexity.

With the capability of modeling bidirectional contexts, denoising autoencoding based pretraining like BERT achieves better performance than pretraining approaches based on autoregressive language modeling. However, relying on corrupting the input with masks, BERT neglects dependency between the masked positions and suffers from a pretrain-finetune discrepancy. In light of these pros and cons, we propose XLNet, a generalized autoregressive pretraining method that (1) enables learning bidirectional contexts by maximizing the expected likelihood over all permutations of the factorization order and (2) overcomes the limitations of BERT thanks to its autoregressive formulation. Furthermore, XLNet integrates ideas from Transformer-XL, the state-of-the-art autoregressive model, into pretraining. Empirically, XLNet outperforms BERT on 20 tasks, often by a large margin, and achieves state-of-the-art results on 18 tasks including question answering, natural language inference, sentiment analysis, and document ranking.
