We develop realizability models of intensional type theory, based on groupoids, wherein realizers themselves carry non-trivial (non-discrete) homotopical structure. In the spirit of realizability, this is intended to formalize a homotopical BHK interpretation, whereby evidence for an identification is a path. Specifically, we study partitioned groupoidal assemblies. Categories of such are parameterised by "realizer categories" (instead of the usual partial combinatory algebras) that come equipped with an interval qua internal cogroupoid. The interval furnishes a notion of homotopy as well as a fundamental groupoid construction. Objects in a base groupoid are realized by points in the fundamental groupoid of some object from the realizer category; isomorphisms in the base groupoid are realized by paths in said fundamental groupoid. The main result is that, under mild conditions on the realizer category, the ensuing category of partitioned groupoidal assemblies models intensional (1-truncated) type theory without function extensionality. Moreover, when the underlying realizer category is "untyped", there exists an impredicative universe of 1-types (the modest fibrations). This is a groupoidal analogue of the traditional situation.
Image-generation diffusion models have been fine-tuned to unlock new capabilities such as image-editing and novel view synthesis. Can we similarly unlock image-generation models for visuomotor control? We present GENIMA, a behavior-cloning agent that fine-tunes Stable Diffusion to 'draw joint-actions' as targets on RGB images. These images are fed into a controller that maps the visual targets into a sequence of joint-positions. We study GENIMA on 25 RLBench and 9 real-world manipulation tasks. We find that, by lifting actions into image-space, internet pre-trained diffusion models can generate policies that outperform state-of-the-art visuomotor approaches, especially in robustness to scene perturbations and generalizing to novel objects. Our method is also competitive with 3D agents, despite lacking priors such as depth, keypoints, or motion-planners.
To overcome the limitations and challenges of current automatic table data annotation methods and random table data synthesis approaches, we propose a novel method for synthesizing annotation data specifically designed for table recognition. This method utilizes the structure and content of existing complex tables, facilitating the efficient creation of tables that closely replicate the authentic styles found in the target domain. By leveraging the actual structure and content of tables from Chinese financial announcements, we have developed the first extensive table annotation dataset in this domain. We used this dataset to train several recent deep learning-based end-to-end table recognition models. Additionally, we have established the inaugural benchmark for real-world complex tables in the Chinese financial announcement domain, using it to assess the performance of models trained on our synthetic data, thereby effectively validating our method's practicality and effectiveness. Furthermore, we applied our synthesis method to augment the FinTabNet dataset, extracted from English financial announcements, by increasing the proportion of tables with multiple spanning cells to introduce greater complexity. Our experiments show that models trained on this augmented dataset achieve comprehensive improvements in performance, especially in the recognition of tables with multiple spanning cells.
Test-time interventions for language models can enhance factual accuracy, mitigate harmful outputs, and improve model efficiency without costly retraining. But despite a flood of new methods, different types of interventions are largely developing independently. In practice, multiple interventions must be applied sequentially to the same model, yet we lack standardized ways to study how interventions interact. We fill this gap by introducing composable interventions, a framework to study the effects of using multiple interventions on the same language models, featuring new metrics and a unified codebase. Using our framework, we conduct extensive experiments and compose popular methods from three emerging intervention categories -- Knowledge Editing, Model Compression, and Machine Unlearning. Our results from 310 different compositions uncover meaningful interactions: compression hinders editing and unlearning, composing interventions hinges on their order of application, and popular general-purpose metrics are inadequate for assessing composability. Taken together, our findings showcase clear gaps in composability, suggesting a need for new multi-objective interventions. A quantum computing simulation provides the opportunity to explore the behaviors of quantum circuits, study the properties of quantum gates, and develop quantum computing algorithms. Simulating quantum circuits requires geometric time and space complexities, impacting the size of the quantum circuit that can be simulated as well as the respective time required to simulate a particular circuit. Applying the parallelism inherent in the simulation and crafting custom architectures, larger quantum circuits can be simulated. A scalable accelerator architecture is proposed to provide a high performance, highly parallel, accelerator. Among the challenges of creating a scalable architecture is managing parallelism, efficiently routing quantum state components for gate evaluation, and measurement. An example is demonstrated on an Intel Agilex field programmable gate array (FPGA).
Robust and effective scaling of models from small to large width typically requires the precise adjustment of many algorithmic and architectural details, such as parameterization and optimizer choices. In this work, we propose a new perspective on parameterization by investigating a key assumption in prior work about the alignment between parameters and data and derive new theoretical results under weaker assumptions and a broader set of optimizers. Our extensive empirical investigation includes tens of thousands of models trained with all combinations of three optimizers, four parameterizations, several alignment assumptions, more than a dozen learning rates, and fourteen model sizes up to 26.8B parameters. We find that the best learning rate scaling prescription would often have been excluded by the assumptions in prior work. Our results show that all parameterizations, not just maximal update parameterization (muP), can achieve hyperparameter transfer; moreover, our novel per-layer learning rate prescription for standard parameterization outperforms muP. Finally, we demonstrate that an overlooked aspect of parameterization, the epsilon parameter in Adam, must be scaled correctly to avoid gradient underflow and propose Adam-atan2, a new numerically stable, scale-invariant version of Adam that eliminates the epsilon hyperparameter entirely.
The problem of finite/fixed-time cooperative state estimation is considered for a class of quasilinear systems with nonlinearities satisfying a H\"older condition. A strongly connected nonlinear distributed observer is designed under the assumption of global observability. By proper parameter tuning with linear matrix inequalities, the observer error equation possesses finite/fixed-time stability in the perturbation-free case and input-to-state stability with respect to bounded perturbations. Numerical simulations are performed to validate this design.
Functional principal component analysis (FPCA) is a key tool in the study of functional data, driving both exploratory analyses and feature construction for use in formal modeling and testing procedures. However, existing methods for FPCA do not apply when functional observations are truncated, e.g., the measurement instrument only supports recordings within a pre-specified interval, thereby truncating values outside of the range to the nearest boundary. A naive application of existing methods without correction for truncation induces bias. We extend the FPCA framework to accommodate truncated noisy functional data by first recovering smooth mean and covariance surface estimates that are representative of the latent process's mean and covariance functions. Unlike traditional sample covariance smoothing techniques, our procedure yields a positive semi-definite covariance surface, computed without the need to retroactively remove negative eigenvalues in the covariance operator decomposition. Additionally, we construct a FPC score predictor and demonstrate its use in the generalized functional linear model. Convergence rates for the proposed estimators are provided. In simulation experiments, the proposed method yields better predictive performance and lower bias than existing alternatives. We illustrate its practical value through an application to a study with truncated blood glucose measurements.
We study certain linear algebra algorithms for recursive block matrices. This representation has useful practical and theoretical properties. We summarize some previous results for block matrix inversion and present some results on triangular decomposition of block matrices. The case of inverting matrices over a ring that is neither formally real nor formally complex was inspired by Gonzalez-Vega et al.
We introduce and analyze numerical companion matrix methods for the reconstruction of hypersurfaces with crossings from smooth interpolants given unordered or, without loss of generality, value-sorted data. The problem is motivated by the desire to machine learn potential energy surfaces arising in molecular excited state computational chemistry applications. We present simplified models which reproduce the analytically predicted convergence and stability behaviors as well as two application-oriented numerical experiments: the electronic excited states of Graphene featuring Dirac conical cusps and energy surfaces corresponding to a sulfur dioxide ($SO_2$) molecule in different configurations.
Humans perceive the world by concurrently processing and fusing high-dimensional inputs from multiple modalities such as vision and audio. Machine perception models, in stark contrast, are typically modality-specific and optimised for unimodal benchmarks, and hence late-stage fusion of final representations or predictions from each modality (`late-fusion') is still a dominant paradigm for multimodal video classification. Instead, we introduce a novel transformer based architecture that uses `fusion bottlenecks' for modality fusion at multiple layers. Compared to traditional pairwise self-attention, our model forces information between different modalities to pass through a small number of bottleneck latents, requiring the model to collate and condense the most relevant information in each modality and only share what is necessary. We find that such a strategy improves fusion performance, at the same time reducing computational cost. We conduct thorough ablation studies, and achieve state-of-the-art results on multiple audio-visual classification benchmarks including Audioset, Epic-Kitchens and VGGSound.
