Recent progress in inpainting increasingly relies on generative models, leveraging their strong generation capabilities for addressing ill-conditioned problems. However, this enhanced generation often introduces instability, leading to arbitrary object generation within masked regions. This paper proposes a balanced solution, emphasizing the importance of unmasked regions in guiding inpainting while preserving generative capacity. Our approach, Aligned Stable Inpainting with UnKnown Areas Prior (ASUKA), employs a reconstruction-based masked auto-encoder (MAE) as a stable prior. Aligned with the robust Stable Diffusion inpainting model (SD), ASUKA significantly improves inpainting stability. ASUKA further aligns masked and unmasked regions through an inpainting-specialized decoder, ensuring more faithful inpainting. To validate effectiveness across domains and masking scenarios, we evaluate on MISATO, a collection of several existing dataset. Results confirm ASUKA's efficacy in both stability and fidelity compared to SD and other inpainting algorithms.

In Bayesian peer-to-peer decentralized data fusion, the underlying distributions held locally by autonomous agents are frequently assumed to be over the same set of variables (homogeneous). This requires each agent to process and communicate the full global joint distribution, and thus leads to high computation and communication costs irrespective of relevancy to specific local objectives. This work formulates and studies heterogeneous decentralized fusion problems, defined as the set of problems in which either the communicated or the processed distributions describe different, but overlapping, random states of interest that are subsets of a larger full global joint state. We exploit the conditional independence structure of such problems and provide a rigorous derivation of novel exact and approximate conditionally factorized heterogeneous fusion rules. We further develop a new version of the homogeneous Channel Filter algorithm to enable conservative heterogeneous fusion for smoothing and filtering scenarios in dynamic problems. Numerical examples show more than $99.5\%$ potential communication reduction for heterogeneous channel filter fusion, and a multi-target tracking simulation shows that these methods provide consistent estimates while remaining computationally scalable.

Refreshable tactile displays (RTDs) are predicted to soon become a viable option for the provision of accessible graphics for people who are blind or have low vision (BLV). This new technology for the tactile display of braille and graphics, usually using raised pins, makes it easier to generate and access a large number of graphics. However, it differs from existing tactile graphics in terms of scale, height and fidelity. Here, we share the perspectives of four key stakeholders -- blind touch readers, vision specialist teachers, accessible format producers and assistive technology providers -- to explore the potential uses, advantages and needs relating to the introduction of RTDs. We also provide advice on what role the data visualisation community can take to help ensure that people who are BLV are best able to benefit from the introduction of affordable RTDs.

Here, we investigate the canonical transit functions of binary clustering systems inspired by pyramids, i.e., interval hypergraphs. We provide alternative characterizations of weak hierarchies, and describe union-closed binary clustering systems as a subclass of pyramids and weakly pyramidal clustering systems as an interesting generalization.

We present new concentration inequalities for either martingale dependent or exchangeable random symmetric matrices under a variety of tail conditions, encompassing standard Chernoff bounds to self-normalized heavy-tailed settings. These inequalities are often randomized in a way that renders them strictly tighter than existing deterministic results in the literature, are typically expressed in the Loewner order, and are sometimes valid at arbitrary data-dependent stopping times. Along the way, we explore the theory of matrix supermartingales and maximal inequalities, potentially of independent interest.

Although continuous advances in theoretical modelling of Molecular Communications (MC) are observed, there is still an insuperable gap between theory and experimental testbeds, especially at the microscale. In this paper, the development of the first testbed incorporating engineered yeast cells is reported. Different from the existing literature, eukaryotic yeast cells are considered for both the sender and the receiver, with {\alpha}-factor molecules facilitating the information transfer. The use of such cells is motivated mainly by the well understood biological mechanism of yeast mating, together with their genetic amenability. In addition, recent advances in yeast biosensing establish yeast as a suitable detector and a neat interface to in-body sensor networks. The system under consideration is presented first, and the mathematical models of the underlying biological processes leading to an end-to-end (E2E) system are given. The experimental setup is then described and used to obtain experimental results which validate the developed mathematical models. Beyond that, the ability of the system to effectively generate output pulses in response to repeated stimuli is demonstrated, reporting one event per two hours. However, fast RNA fluctuations indicate cell responses in less than three minutes, demonstrating the potential for much higher rates in the future.

Humans perceive the world by concurrently processing and fusing high-dimensional inputs from multiple modalities such as vision and audio. Machine perception models, in stark contrast, are typically modality-specific and optimised for unimodal benchmarks, and hence late-stage fusion of final representations or predictions from each modality (`late-fusion') is still a dominant paradigm for multimodal video classification. Instead, we introduce a novel transformer based architecture that uses `fusion bottlenecks' for modality fusion at multiple layers. Compared to traditional pairwise self-attention, our model forces information between different modalities to pass through a small number of bottleneck latents, requiring the model to collate and condense the most relevant information in each modality and only share what is necessary. We find that such a strategy improves fusion performance, at the same time reducing computational cost. We conduct thorough ablation studies, and achieve state-of-the-art results on multiple audio-visual classification benchmarks including Audioset, Epic-Kitchens and VGGSound. All code and models will be released.

Modern neural network training relies heavily on data augmentation for improved generalization. After the initial success of label-preserving augmentations, there has been a recent surge of interest in label-perturbing approaches, which combine features and labels across training samples to smooth the learned decision surface. In this paper, we propose a new augmentation method that leverages the first and second moments extracted and re-injected by feature normalization. We replace the moments of the learned features of one training image by those of another, and also interpolate the target labels. As our approach is fast, operates entirely in feature space, and mixes different signals than prior methods, one can effectively combine it with existing augmentation methods. We demonstrate its efficacy across benchmark data sets in computer vision, speech, and natural language processing, where it consistently improves the generalization performance of highly competitive baseline networks.

Benefit from the quick development of deep learning techniques, salient object detection has achieved remarkable progresses recently. However, there still exists following two major challenges that hinder its application in embedded devices, low resolution output and heavy model weight. To this end, this paper presents an accurate yet compact deep network for efficient salient object detection. More specifically, given a coarse saliency prediction in the deepest layer, we first employ residual learning to learn side-output residual features for saliency refinement, which can be achieved with very limited convolutional parameters while keep accuracy. Secondly, we further propose reverse attention to guide such side-output residual learning in a top-down manner. By erasing the current predicted salient regions from side-output features, the network can eventually explore the missing object parts and details which results in high resolution and accuracy. Experiments on six benchmark datasets demonstrate that the proposed approach compares favorably against state-of-the-art methods, and with advantages in terms of simplicity, efficiency (45 FPS) and model size (81 MB).

We advocate the use of implicit fields for learning generative models of shapes and introduce an implicit field decoder for shape generation, aimed at improving the visual quality of the generated shapes. An implicit field assigns a value to each point in 3D space, so that a shape can be extracted as an iso-surface. Our implicit field decoder is trained to perform this assignment by means of a binary classifier. Specifically, it takes a point coordinate, along with a feature vector encoding a shape, and outputs a value which indicates whether the point is outside the shape or not. By replacing conventional decoders by our decoder for representation learning and generative modeling of shapes, we demonstrate superior results for tasks such as shape autoencoding, generation, interpolation, and single-view 3D reconstruction, particularly in terms of visual quality.

It is always well believed that modeling relationships between objects would be helpful for representing and eventually describing an image. Nevertheless, there has not been evidence in support of the idea on image description generation. In this paper, we introduce a new design to explore the connections between objects for image captioning under the umbrella of attention-based encoder-decoder framework. Specifically, we present Graph Convolutional Networks plus Long Short-Term Memory (dubbed as GCN-LSTM) architecture that novelly integrates both semantic and spatial object relationships into image encoder. Technically, we build graphs over the detected objects in an image based on their spatial and semantic connections. The representations of each region proposed on objects are then refined by leveraging graph structure through GCN. With the learnt region-level features, our GCN-LSTM capitalizes on LSTM-based captioning framework with attention mechanism for sentence generation. Extensive experiments are conducted on COCO image captioning dataset, and superior results are reported when comparing to state-of-the-art approaches. More remarkably, GCN-LSTM increases CIDEr-D performance from 120.1% to 128.7% on COCO testing set.
