Language models trained on large-scale corpora can generate remarkably fluent results in open-domain dialogue. However, for the persona-based dialogue generation task, consistency and coherence are also key factors, which are great challenges for language models. Existing works mainly focus on valuable data filtering, model structure modifying, or objective function designing, while their improvements are limited and hard to generalize to all types of pre-trained language models. However, we find that language models can produce consistent and coherent responses if we consider enough generations. Thus, the problems lay in large-scale response generation and target response selection. In this work, a simple but effective two-stage SimOAP strategy is proposed, i.e., over-sampling and post-evaluation. The over-sampling stage takes large-scale responses from existing trained models efficiently via off-the-shelf distilling and compressing methods, and the post-evaluation stage selects a good response based on multiple well-designed evaluation metrics from large-scale candidates. Experimental results show that the proposed plug-in SimOAP strategy improves the backbone models and outperforms the baseline strategies in both automatic and human evaluations.
Along with the nearing completion of the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), comes an increasing demand for accurate and reliable automated solutions to extract valuable information from the vast amount of data it will allow acquiring. Automated source finding is a particularly important task in this context, as it enables the detection and classification of astronomical objects. Deep-learning-based object detection and semantic segmentation models have proven to be suitable for this purpose. However, training such deep networks requires a high volume of labeled data, which is not trivial to obtain in the context of radio astronomy. Since data needs to be manually labeled by experts, this process is not scalable to large dataset sizes, limiting the possibilities of leveraging deep networks to address several tasks. In this work, we propose RADiff, a generative approach based on conditional diffusion models trained over an annotated radio dataset to generate synthetic images, containing radio sources of different morphologies, to augment existing datasets and reduce the problems caused by class imbalances. We also show that it is possible to generate fully-synthetic image-annotation pairs to automatically augment any annotated dataset. We evaluate the effectiveness of this approach by training a semantic segmentation model on a real dataset augmented in two ways: 1) using synthetic images obtained from real masks, and 2) generating images from synthetic semantic masks. We show an improvement in performance when applying augmentation, gaining up to 18% in performance when using real masks and 4% when augmenting with synthetic masks. Finally, we employ this model to generate large-scale radio maps with the objective of simulating Data Challenges.
Prompts have been shown to be an effective method to adapt a frozen Pretrained Language Model (PLM) to perform well on downstream tasks. Prompts can be represented by a human-engineered word sequence or by a learned continuous embedding. In this work, we investigate conditional and compositional differentiable prompting. We propose a new model, Prompt Production System (PRopS), which learns to transform task instructions or input metadata, into continuous prompts that elicit task-specific outputs from the PLM. Our model uses a modular network structure based on our neural formulation of Production Systems, which allows the model to learn discrete rules -- neural functions that learn to specialize in transforming particular prompt input patterns, making it suitable for compositional transfer learning and few-shot learning. We present extensive empirical and theoretical analysis and show that PRopS consistently surpasses other PLM adaptation techniques, and often improves upon fully fine-tuned models, on compositional generalization tasks, controllable summarization and multilingual translation, while needing fewer trainable parameters.
Although Large Language Models (LLMs) have shown great potential in Natural Language Generation, it is still challenging to characterize the uncertainty of model generations, i.e., when users could trust model outputs. Our research is derived from the heuristic facts that tokens are created unequally in reflecting the meaning of generations by auto-regressive LLMs, i.e., some tokens are more relevant (or representative) than others, yet all the tokens are equally valued when estimating uncertainty. It is because of the linguistic redundancy where mostly a few keywords are sufficient to convey the meaning of a long sentence. We name these inequalities as generative inequalities and investigate how they affect uncertainty estimation. Our results reveal that considerable tokens and sentences containing limited semantics are weighted equally or even heavily when estimating uncertainty. To tackle these biases posed by generative inequalities, we propose to jointly Shifting Attention to more Relevant (SAR) components from both the token level and the sentence level while estimating uncertainty. We conduct experiments over popular "off-the-shelf" LLMs (e.g., OPT, LLaMA) with model sizes up to 30B and powerful commercial LLMs (e.g., Davinci from OpenAI), across various free-form question-answering tasks. Synthetic data generation has been a growing area of research in recent years. However, its potential applications in serious games have not been thoroughly explored. Advances in this field could anticipate data modelling and analysis, as well as speed up the development process. To try to fill this gap in the literature, we propose a simulator architecture for generating probabilistic synthetic data for serious games based on interactive narratives. This architecture is designed to be generic and modular so that it can be used by other researchers on similar problems. To simulate the interaction of synthetic players with questions, we use a cognitive testing model based on the Item Response Theory framework. We also show how probabilistic graphical models (in particular Bayesian networks) can be used to introduce expert knowledge and external data into the simulation. Finally, we apply the proposed architecture and methods in a use case of a serious game focused on cyberbullying. We perform Bayesian inference experiments using a hierarchical model to demonstrate the identifiability and robustness of the generated data.
Previous question-answer pair generation methods aimed to produce fluent and meaningful question-answer pairs but tend to have poor diversity. Recent attempts addressing this issue suffer from either low model capacity or overcomplicated architecture. Furthermore, they overlooked the problem where the controllability of their models is highly dependent on the input. In this paper, we propose a model named VOLTA that enhances generative diversity by leveraging the Variational Autoencoder framework with a shared backbone network as its encoder and decoder. In addition, we propose adding InfoGAN-style latent codes to enable input-independent controllability over the generation process. We perform comprehensive experiments and the results show that our approach can significantly improve diversity and controllability over state-of-the-art models.
Image stylization has seen significant advancement and widespread interest over the years, leading to the development of a multitude of techniques. Extending these stylization techniques, such as Neural Style Transfer (NST), to videos is often achieved by applying them on a per-frame basis. However, per-frame stylization usually lacks temporal consistency, expressed by undesirable flickering artifacts. Most of the existing approaches for enforcing temporal consistency suffer from one or more of the following drawbacks: They (1) are only suitable for a limited range of techniques, (2) do not support online processing as they require the complete video as input, (3) cannot provide consistency for the task of stylization, or (4) do not provide interactive consistency control. Domain-agnostic techniques for temporal consistency aim to eradicate flickering completely but typically disregard aesthetic aspects. For stylization tasks, however, consistency control is an essential requirement as a certain amount of flickering adds to the artistic look and feel. Moreover, making this control interactive is paramount from a usability perspective. To achieve the above requirements, we propose an approach that stylizes video streams in real-time at full HD resolutions while providing interactive consistency control. We develop a lite optical-flow network that operates at 80 FPS on desktop systems with sufficient accuracy. Further, we employ an adaptive combination of local and global consistency features and enable interactive selection between them. Objective and subjective evaluations demonstrate that our method is superior to state-of-the-art video consistency approaches.
Recently, ChatGPT, along with DALL-E-2 and Codex,has been gaining significant attention from society. As a result, many individuals have become interested in related resources and are seeking to uncover the background and secrets behind its impressive performance. In fact, ChatGPT and other Generative AI (GAI) techniques belong to the category of Artificial Intelligence Generated Content (AIGC), which involves the creation of digital content, such as images, music, and natural language, through AI models. The goal of AIGC is to make the content creation process more efficient and accessible, allowing for the production of high-quality content at a faster pace. AIGC is achieved by extracting and understanding intent information from instructions provided by human, and generating the content according to its knowledge and the intent information. In recent years, large-scale models have become increasingly important in AIGC as they provide better intent extraction and thus, improved generation results. With the growth of data and the size of the models, the distribution that the model can learn becomes more comprehensive and closer to reality, leading to more realistic and high-quality content generation. This survey provides a comprehensive review on the history of generative models, and basic components, recent advances in AIGC from unimodal interaction and multimodal interaction. From the perspective of unimodality, we introduce the generation tasks and relative models of text and image. From the perspective of multimodality, we introduce the cross-application between the modalities mentioned above. Finally, we discuss the existing open problems and future challenges in AIGC.
Knowledge graph reasoning (KGR), aiming to deduce new facts from existing facts based on mined logic rules underlying knowledge graphs (KGs), has become a fast-growing research direction. It has been proven to significantly benefit the usage of KGs in many AI applications, such as question answering and recommendation systems, etc. According to the graph types, the existing KGR models can be roughly divided into three categories, \textit{i.e.,} static models, temporal models, and multi-modal models. The early works in this domain mainly focus on static KGR and tend to directly apply general knowledge graph embedding models to the reasoning task. However, these models are not suitable for more complex but practical tasks, such as inductive static KGR, temporal KGR, and multi-modal KGR. To this end, multiple works have been developed recently, but no survey papers and open-source repositories comprehensively summarize and discuss models in this important direction. To fill the gap, we conduct a survey for knowledge graph reasoning tracing from static to temporal and then to multi-modal KGs. Concretely, the preliminaries, summaries of KGR models, and typical datasets are introduced and discussed consequently. Moreover, we discuss the challenges and potential opportunities. Large knowledge graphs often grow to store temporal facts that model the dynamic relations or interactions of entities along the timeline. Since such temporal knowledge graphs often suffer from incompleteness, it is important to develop time-aware representation learning models that help to infer the missing temporal facts. While the temporal facts are typically evolving, it is observed that many facts often show a repeated pattern along the timeline, such as economic crises and diplomatic activities. This observation indicates that a model could potentially learn much from the known facts appeared in history. To this end, we propose a new representation learning model for temporal knowledge graphs, namely CyGNet, based on a novel timeaware copy-generation mechanism. CyGNet is not only able to predict future facts from the whole entity vocabulary, but also capable of identifying facts with repetition and accordingly predicting such future facts with reference to the known facts in the past. We evaluate the proposed method on the knowledge graph completion task using five benchmark datasets. Extensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of CyGNet for predicting future facts with repetition as well as de novo fact prediction.
Neural network models usually suffer from the challenge of incorporating commonsense knowledge into the open-domain dialogue systems. In this paper, we propose a novel knowledge-aware dialogue generation model (called TransDG), which transfers question representation and knowledge matching abilities from knowledge base question answering (KBQA) task to facilitate the utterance understanding and factual knowledge selection for dialogue generation. In addition, we propose a response guiding attention and a multi-step decoding strategy to steer our model to focus on relevant features for response generation. Experiments on two benchmark datasets demonstrate that our model has robust superiority over compared methods in generating informative and fluent dialogues.
