We study in this paper the monotonicity properties of the numerical solutions to Volterra integral equations with nonincreasing completely positive kernels on nonuniform meshes. There is a duality between the complete positivity and the properties of the complementary kernel being nonnegative and nonincreasing. Based on this, we propose the ``complementary monotonicity'' to describe the nonincreasing completely positive kernels, and the ``right complementary monotone'' (R-CMM) kernels as the analogue for nonuniform meshes. We then establish the monotonicity properties of the numerical solutions inherited from the continuous equation if the discretization has the R-CMM property. Such a property seems weaker than being log-convex and there is no resctriction on the step size ratio of the discretization for the R-CMM property to hold.

G\'acs' coarse-grained algorithmic entropy leverages universal computation to quantify the information content of any given physical state. Unlike the Boltzmann and Shannon-Gibbs entropies, it requires no prior commitment to macrovariables or probabilistic ensembles, rendering it applicable to settings arbitrarily far from equilibrium. For Markovian coarse-grainings, we prove a number of algorithmic fluctuation inequalities. The most important of these is a very general formulation of the second law of thermodynamics. In the presence of a heat and work reservoir, it implies algorithmic versions of Jarzynski's equality and Landauer's principle. Finally, to demonstrate how a deficiency of algorithmic entropy can be used as a resource, we model an information engine powered by compressible strings.

There are many numerical methods for solving partial different equations (PDEs) on manifolds such as classical implicit, finite difference, finite element, and isogeometric analysis methods which aim at improving the interoperability between finite element method and computer aided design (CAD) software. However, these approaches have difficulty when the domain has singularities since the solution at the singularity may be multivalued. This paper develops a novel numerical approach to solve elliptic PDEs on real, closed, connected, orientable, and almost smooth algebraic curves and surfaces. Our method integrates numerical algebraic geometry, differential geometry, and a finite difference scheme which is demonstrated on several examples.

We present a numerical iterative optimization algorithm for the minimization of a cost function consisting of a linear combination of three convex terms, one of which is differentiable, a second one is prox-simple and the third one is the composition of a linear map and a prox-simple function. The algorithm's special feature lies in its ability to approximate, in a single iteration run, the minimizers of the cost function for many different values of the parameters determining the relative weight of the three terms in the cost function. A proof of convergence of the algorithm, based on an inexact variable metric approach, is also provided. As a special case, one recovers a generalization of the primal-dual algorithm of Chambolle and Pock, and also of the proximal-gradient algorithm. Finally, we show how it is related to a primal-dual iterative algorithm based on inexact proximal evaluations of the non-smooth terms of the cost function.

We study the high-order local discontinuous Galerkin (LDG) method for the $p$-Laplace equation. We reformulate our spatial discretization as an equivalent convex minimization problem and use a preconditioned gradient descent method as the nonlinear solver. For the first time, a weighted preconditioner that provides $hk$-independent convergence is applied in the LDG setting. For polynomial order $k \geqslant 1$, we rigorously establish the solvability of our scheme and provide a priori error estimates in a mesh-dependent energy norm. Our error estimates are under a different and non-equivalent distance from existing LDG results. For arbitrarily high-order polynomials under the assumption that the exact solution has enough regularity, the error estimates demonstrate the potential for high-order accuracy. Our numerical results exhibit the desired convergence speed facilitated by the preconditioner, and we observe best convergence rates in gradient variables in alignment with linear LDG, and optimal rates in the primal variable when $1 < p \leqslant 2$.

In this paper we introduce a multilevel Picard approximation algorithm for general semilinear parabolic PDEs with gradient-dependent nonlinearities whose coefficient functions do not need to be constant. We also provide a full convergence and complexity analysis of our algorithm. To obtain our main results, we consider a particular stochastic fixed-point equation (SFPE) motivated by the Feynman-Kac representation and the Bismut-Elworthy-Li formula. We show that the PDE under consideration has a unique viscosity solution which coincides with the first component of the unique solution of the stochastic fixed-point equation. Moreover, the gradient of the unique viscosity solution of the PDE exists and coincides with the second component of the unique solution of the stochastic fixed-point equation.

Numerical methods for computing the solutions of Markov backward stochastic differential equations (BSDEs) driven by continuous-time Markov chains (CTMCs) are explored. The main contributions of this paper are as follows: (1) we observe that Euler-Maruyama temporal discretization methods for solving Markov BSDEs driven by CTMCs are equivalent to exponential integrators for solving the associated systems of ordinary differential equations (ODEs); (2) we introduce multi-stage Euler-Maruyama methods for effectively solving "stiff" Markov BSDEs driven by CTMCs; these BSDEs typically arise from the spatial discretization of Markov BSDEs driven by Brownian motion; (3) we propose a multilevel spatial discretization method on sparse grids that efficiently approximates high-dimensional Markov BSDEs driven by Brownian motion with a combination of multiple Markov BSDEs driven by CTMCs on grids with different resolutions. We also illustrate the effectiveness of the presented methods with a number of numerical experiments in which we treat nonlinear BSDEs arising from option pricing problems in finance.

Despite decades of practice, finite-size errors in many widely used electronic structure theories for periodic systems remain poorly understood. For periodic systems using a general Monkhorst-Pack grid, there has been no comprehensive and rigorous analysis of the finite-size error in the Hartree-Fock theory (HF) and the second order M{\o}ller-Plesset perturbation theory (MP2), which are the simplest wavefunction based method, and the simplest post-Hartree-Fock method, respectively. Such calculations can be viewed as a multi-dimensional integral discretized with certain trapezoidal rules. Due to the Coulomb singularity, the integrand has many points of discontinuity in general, and standard error analysis based on the Euler-Maclaurin formula gives overly pessimistic results. The lack of analytic understanding of finite-size errors also impedes the development of effective finite-size correction schemes. We propose a unified analysis to obtain sharp convergence rates of finite-size errors for the periodic HF and MP2 theories. Our main technical advancement is a generalization of the result of [Lyness, 1976] for obtaining sharp convergence rates of the trapezoidal rule for a class of non-smooth integrands. Our result is applicable to three-dimensional bulk systems as well as low dimensional systems (such as nanowires and 2D materials). Our unified analysis also allows us to prove the effectiveness of the Madelung-constant correction to the Fock exchange energy, and the effectiveness of a recently proposed staggered mesh method for periodic MP2 calculations [Xing, Li, Lin, J. Chem. Theory Comput. 2021]. Our analysis connects the effectiveness of the staggered mesh method with integrands with removable singularities, and suggests a new staggered mesh method for reducing finite-size errors of periodic HF calculations.

When the eigenvalues of the coefficient matrix for a linear scalar ordinary differential equation are of large magnitude, its solutions exhibit complicated behaviour, such as high-frequency oscillations, rapid growth or rapid decay. The cost of representing such solutions using standard techniques grows with the magnitudes of the eigenvalues. As a consequence, the running times of most solvers for ordinary differential equations also grow with these eigenvalues. However, a large class of scalar ordinary differential equations with slowly-varying coefficients admit slowly-varying phase functions that can be represented at a cost which is bounded independent of the magnitudes of the eigenvalues of the corresponding coefficient matrix. Here, we introduce a numerical algorithm for constructing slowly-varying phase functions which represent the solutions of a linear scalar ordinary differential equation. Our method's running time depends on the complexity of the equation's coefficients, but is bounded independent of the magnitudes of the equation's eigenvalues. Once the phase functions have been constructed, essentially any reasonable initial or boundary value problem for the scalar equation can be easily solved. We present the results of numerical experiments showing that, despite its greater generality, our algorithm is competitive with state-of-the-art methods for solving highly-oscillatory second order differential equations. We also compare our method with Magnus-type exponential integrators and find that our approach is orders of magnitude faster in the high-frequency regime.

We present a formulation for high-order generalized periodicity conditions in the context of a high-order electromechanical theory including flexoelectricity, strain gradient elasticity and gradient dielectricity, with the goal of studying periodic architected metamaterials. Such theory results in fourth-order governing partial differential equations, and the periodicity conditions involve continuity across the periodic boundary of primal fields (displacement and electric potential) and their normal derivatives, continuity of the corresponding dual generalized forces (tractions, double tractions, surface charge density and double surface charge density). Rather than imposing these conditions numerically as explicit constraints, we develop an approximation space which fulfils generalized periodicity by construction. Our method naturally allows us to impose general macroscopic fields (strains/stresses and electric fields/electric displacements) along arbitrary directions, enabling the characterization of the material anisotropy. We apply the proposed method to study periodic architected metamaterials with apparent piezoelectricity. We first verify the method by directly comparing the results with a large periodic structure, then apply it to evaluate the anisotropic apparently piezoelectricity of a geometrically polarized 2D lattice, and finally demonstrate the application of the method in a 3D architected metamaterial.

We introduce a novel algorithm that converges to level-set convex viscosity solutions of high-dimensional Hamilton-Jacobi equations. The algorithm is applicable to a broad class of curvature motion PDEs, as well as a recently developed Hamilton-Jacobi equation for the Tukey depth, which is a statistical depth measure of data points. A main contribution of our work is a new monotone scheme for approximating the direction of the gradient, which allows for monotone discretizations of pure partial derivatives in the direction of, and orthogonal to, the gradient. We provide a convergence analysis of the algorithm on both regular Cartesian grids and unstructured point clouds in any dimension and present numerical experiments that demonstrate the effectiveness of the algorithm in approximating solutions of the affine flow in two dimensions and the Tukey depth measure of high-dimensional datasets such as MNIST and FashionMNIST.
