Channel prediction is critical to address the channel aging issue in mobile scenarios. Existing channel prediction techniques are mainly designed for discrete channel prediction, which can only predict the future channel in a fixed time slot per frame, while the other intra-frame channels are usually recovered by interpolation. However, these approaches suffer from a serious interpolation loss, especially for mobile millimeter wave communications. To solve this challenging problem, we propose a tensor neural ordinary differential equation (TN-ODE) based continuous-time channel prediction scheme to realize the direct prediction of intra-frame channels. Specifically, inspired by the recently developed continuous mapping model named neural ODE in the field of machine learning, we first utilize the neural ODE model to predict future continuous-time channels. To improve the channel prediction accuracy and reduce computational complexity, we then propose the TN-ODE scheme to learn the structural characteristics of the high-dimensional channel by low dimensional learnable transform. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme is able to achieve higher intra-frame channel prediction accuracy than existing schemes.
Current simultaneous speech translation models can process audio only up to a few seconds long. Contemporary datasets provide an oracle segmentation into sentences based on human-annotated transcripts and translations. However, the segmentation into sentences is not available in the real world. Current speech segmentation approaches either offer poor segmentation quality or have to trade latency for quality. In this paper, we propose a novel segmentation approach for a low-latency end-to-end speech translation. We leverage the existing speech translation encoder-decoder architecture with ST CTC and show that it can perform the segmentation task without supervision or additional parameters. To the best of our knowledge, our method is the first that allows an actual end-to-end simultaneous speech translation, as the same model is used for translation and segmentation at the same time. On a diverse set of language pairs and in- and out-of-domain data, we show that the proposed approach achieves state-of-the-art quality at no additional computational cost.
Existing real-world video super-resolution (VSR) methods focus on designing a general degradation pipeline for open-domain videos while ignoring data intrinsic characteristics which strongly limit their performance when applying to some specific domains (eg., animation videos). In this paper, we thoroughly explore the characteristics of animation videos and leverage the rich priors in real-world animation data for a more practical animation VSR model. In particular, we propose a multi-scale Vector-Quantized Degradation model for animation video Super-Resolution (VQD-SR) to decompose the local details from global structures and transfer the degradation priors in real-world animation videos to a learned vector-quantized codebook for degradation modeling. A rich-content Real Animation Low-quality (RAL) video dataset is collected for extracting the priors. We further propose a data enhancement strategy for high-resolution (HR) training videos based on our observation that existing HR videos are mostly collected from the Web which contains conspicuous compression artifacts. The proposed strategy is valid to lift the upper bound of animation VSR performance, regardless of the specific VSR model. Experimental results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed VQD-SR over state-of-the-art methods, through extensive quantitative and qualitative evaluations of the latest animation video super-resolution benchmark. Audio-visual speech enhancement (AV-SE) aims to enhance degraded speech along with extra visual information such as lip videos, and has been shown to be more effective than audio-only speech enhancement. This paper proposes the incorporation of ultrasound tongue images to improve the performance of lip-based AV-SE systems further. To address the challenge of acquiring ultrasound tongue images during inference, we first propose to employ knowledge distillation during training to investigate the feasibility of leveraging tongue-related information without directly inputting ultrasound tongue images. Specifically, we guide an audio-lip speech enhancement student model to learn from a pre-trained audio-lip-tongue speech enhancement teacher model, thus transferring tongue-related knowledge. To better model the alignment between the lip and tongue modalities, we further propose the introduction of a lip-tongue key-value memory network into the AV-SE model. This network enables the retrieval of tongue features based on readily available lip features, thereby assisting the subsequent speech enhancement task. Experimental results demonstrate that both methods significantly improve the quality and intelligibility of the enhanced speech compared to traditional lip-based AV-SE baselines. Moreover, both proposed methods exhibit strong generalization performance on unseen speakers and in the presence of unseen noises. Furthermore, phone error rate (PER) analysis of automatic speech recognition (ASR) reveals that while all phonemes benefit from introducing ultrasound tongue images, palatal and velar consonants benefit most.
Multi-channel speech enhancement extracts speech using multiple microphones that capture spatial cues. Effectively utilizing directional information is key for multi-channel enhancement. Deep learning shows great potential on multi-channel speech enhancement and often takes short-time Fourier Transform (STFT) as inputs directly. To fully leverage the spatial information, we introduce a method using spherical harmonics transform (SHT) coefficients as auxiliary model inputs. These coefficients concisely represent spatial distributions. Specifically, our model has two encoders, one for the STFT and another for the SHT. By fusing both encoders in the decoder to estimate the enhanced STFT, we effectively incorporate spatial context. Evaluations on TIMIT under varying noise and reverberation show our model outperforms established benchmarks. Remarkably, this is achieved with fewer computations and parameters. By leveraging spherical harmonics to incorporate directional cues, our model efficiently improves the performance of the multi-channel speech enhancement.
As the most critical components in a sentence, subject, predicate and object require special attention in the video captioning task. To implement this idea, we design a novel framework, named COllaborative three-Stream Transformers (COST), to model the three parts separately and complement each other for better representation. Specifically, COST is formed by three branches of transformers to exploit the visual-linguistic interactions of different granularities in spatial-temporal domain between videos and text, detected objects and text, and actions and text. Meanwhile, we propose a cross-granularity attention module to align the interactions modeled by the three branches of transformers, then the three branches of transformers can support each other to exploit the most discriminative semantic information of different granularities for accurate predictions of captions. The whole model is trained in an end-to-end fashion. Extensive experiments conducted on three large-scale challenging datasets, i.e., YouCookII, ActivityNet Captions and MSVD, demonstrate that the proposed method performs favorably against the state-of-the-art methods.
Many studies focus on improving pretraining or developing new backbones in text-video retrieval. However, existing methods may suffer from the learning and inference bias issue, as recent research suggests in other text-video-related tasks. For instance, spatial appearance features on action recognition or temporal object co-occurrences on video scene graph generation could induce spurious correlations. In this work, we present a unique and systematic study of a temporal bias due to frame length discrepancy between training and test sets of trimmed video clips, which is the first such attempt for a text-video retrieval task, to the best of our knowledge. We first hypothesise and verify the bias on how it would affect the model illustrated with a baseline study. Then, we propose a causal debiasing approach and perform extensive experiments and ablation studies on the Epic-Kitchens-100, YouCook2, and MSR-VTT datasets. Our model overpasses the baseline and SOTA on nDCG, a semantic-relevancy-focused evaluation metric which proves the bias is mitigated, as well as on the other conventional metrics.
We present an approach to estimating camera rotation in crowded, real-world scenes from handheld monocular video. While camera rotation estimation is a well-studied problem, no previous methods exhibit both high accuracy and acceptable speed in this setting. Because the setting is not addressed well by other datasets, we provide a new dataset and benchmark, with high-accuracy, rigorously verified ground truth, on 17 video sequences. Methods developed for wide baseline stereo (e.g., 5-point methods) perform poorly on monocular video. On the other hand, methods used in autonomous driving (e.g., SLAM) leverage specific sensor setups, specific motion models, or local optimization strategies (lagging batch processing) and do not generalize well to handheld video. Finally, for dynamic scenes, commonly used robustification techniques like RANSAC require large numbers of iterations, and become prohibitively slow. We introduce a novel generalization of the Hough transform on SO(3) to efficiently and robustly find the camera rotation most compatible with optical flow. Among comparably fast methods, ours reduces error by almost 50\% over the next best, and is more accurate than any method, irrespective of speed. This represents a strong new performance point for crowded scenes, an important setting for computer vision. The code and the dataset are available at //fabiendelattre.com/robust-rotation-estimation.
We present a large-scale study on unsupervised spatiotemporal representation learning from videos. With a unified perspective on four recent image-based frameworks, we study a simple objective that can easily generalize all these methods to space-time. Our objective encourages temporally-persistent features in the same video, and in spite of its simplicity, it works surprisingly well across: (i) different unsupervised frameworks, (ii) pre-training datasets, (iii) downstream datasets, and (iv) backbone architectures. We draw a series of intriguing observations from this study, e.g., we discover that encouraging long-spanned persistency can be effective even if the timespan is 60 seconds. In addition to state-of-the-art results in multiple benchmarks, we report a few promising cases in which unsupervised pre-training can outperform its supervised counterpart. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have shown dramatic improvements in single image super-resolution (SISR) by using large-scale external samples. Despite their remarkable performance based on the external dataset, they cannot exploit internal information within a specific image. Another problem is that they are applicable only to the specific condition of data that they are supervised. For instance, the low-resolution (LR) image should be a "bicubic" downsampled noise-free image from a high-resolution (HR) one. To address both issues, zero-shot super-resolution (ZSSR) has been proposed for flexible internal learning. However, they require thousands of gradient updates, i.e., long inference time. In this paper, we present Meta-Transfer Learning for Zero-Shot Super-Resolution (MZSR), which leverages ZSSR. Precisely, it is based on finding a generic initial parameter that is suitable for internal learning. Thus, we can exploit both external and internal information, where one single gradient update can yield quite considerable results. (See Figure 1). With our method, the network can quickly adapt to a given image condition. In this respect, our method can be applied to a large spectrum of image conditions within a fast adaptation process.
This paper introduces an online model for object detection in videos designed to run in real-time on low-powered mobile and embedded devices. Our approach combines fast single-image object detection with convolutional long short term memory (LSTM) layers to create an interweaved recurrent-convolutional architecture. Additionally, we propose an efficient Bottleneck-LSTM layer that significantly reduces computational cost compared to regular LSTMs. Our network achieves temporal awareness by using Bottleneck-LSTMs to refine and propagate feature maps across frames. This approach is substantially faster than existing detection methods in video, outperforming the fastest single-frame models in model size and computational cost while attaining accuracy comparable to much more expensive single-frame models on the Imagenet VID 2015 dataset. Our model reaches a real-time inference speed of up to 15 FPS on a mobile CPU.
