Object pose estimation is a core computer vision problem and often an essential component in robotics. Pose estimation is usually approached by seeking the single best estimate of an object's pose, but this approach is ill-suited for tasks involving visual ambiguity. In such cases it is desirable to estimate the uncertainty as a pose distribution to allow downstream tasks to make informed decisions. Pose distributions can have arbitrary complexity which motivates estimating unparameterized distributions, however, until now they have only been used for orientation estimation on SO(3) due to the difficulty in training on and normalizing over SE(3). We propose a novel method for pose distribution estimation on SE(3). We use a hierarchical grid, a pyramid, which enables efficient importance sampling during training and sparse evaluation of the pyramid at inference, allowing real time 6D pose distribution estimation. Our method outperforms state-of-the-art methods on SO(3), and to the best of our knowledge, we provide the first quantitative results on pose distribution estimation on SE(3). The great potentials of massive Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) in Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) mode can be fully exploited when the downlink Channel State Information (CSI) is available at base stations. However, the accurate CSI is difficult to obtain due to the large amount of feedback overhead caused by massive antennas. In this paper, we propose a deep learning based joint channel estimation and feedback framework, which comprehensively realizes the estimation, compression, and reconstruction of downlink channels in FDD massive MIMO systems. Two networks are constructed to perform estimation and feedback explicitly and implicitly. The explicit network adopts a multi-Signal-to-Noise-Ratios (SNRs) technique to obtain a single trained channel estimation subnet that works well with different SNRs and employs a deep residual network to reconstruct the channels, while the implicit network directly compresses pilots and sends them back to reduce network parameters. Quantization module is also designed to generate data-bearing bitstreams. Simulation results show that the two proposed networks exhibit excellent performance of reconstruction and are robust to different environments and quantization errors.

Previous methods solve feature matching and pose estimation using a two-stage process by first finding matches and then estimating the pose. As they ignore the geometric relationships between the two tasks, they focus on either improving the quality of matches or filtering potential outliers, leading to limited efficiency or accuracy. In contrast, we propose an iterative matching and pose estimation framework (IMP) leveraging the geometric connections between the two tasks: a few good matches are enough for a roughly accurate pose estimation; a roughly accurate pose can be used to guide the matching by providing geometric constraints. To this end, we implement a geometry-aware recurrent attention-based module which jointly outputs sparse matches and camera poses. Specifically, for each iteration, we first implicitly embed geometric information into the module via a pose-consistency loss, allowing it to predict geometry-aware matches progressively. Second, we introduce an \textbf{e}fficient IMP, called EIMP, to dynamically discard keypoints without potential matches, avoiding redundant updating and significantly reducing the quadratic time complexity of attention computation in transformers. Experiments on YFCC100m, Scannet, and Aachen Day-Night datasets demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms previous approaches in terms of accuracy and efficiency.

Recent end-to-end multi-object detectors simplify the inference pipeline by removing hand-crafted processes such as non-maximum suppression (NMS). However, during training, they still heavily rely on heuristics and hand-crafted processes which deteriorate the reliability of the predicted confidence score. In this paper, we propose a novel framework to train an end-to-end multi-object detector consisting of only two terms: negative log-likelihood (NLL) and a regularization term. In doing so, the multi-object detection problem is treated as density estimation of the ground truth bounding boxes utilizing a regularized mixture density model. The proposed \textit{end-to-end multi-object Detection with a Regularized Mixture Model} (D-RMM) is trained by minimizing the NLL with the proposed regularization term, maximum component maximization (MCM) loss, preventing duplicate predictions. Our method reduces the heuristics of the training process and improves the reliability of the predicted confidence score. Moreover, our D-RMM outperforms the previous end-to-end detectors on MS COCO dataset.

Accurately estimating the 6D pose of objects is crucial for many applications, such as robotic grasping, autonomous driving, and augmented reality. However, this task becomes more challenging in poor lighting conditions or when dealing with textureless objects. To address this issue, depth images are becoming an increasingly popular choice due to their invariance to a scene's appearance and the implicit incorporation of essential geometric characteristics. However, fully leveraging depth information to improve the performance of pose estimation remains a difficult and under-investigated problem. To tackle this challenge, we propose a novel framework called SwinDePose, that uses only geometric information from depth images to achieve accurate 6D pose estimation. SwinDePose first calculates the angles between each normal vector defined in a depth image and the three coordinate axes in the camera coordinate system. The resulting angles are then formed into an image, which is encoded using Swin Transformer. Additionally, we apply RandLA-Net to learn the representations from point clouds. The resulting image and point clouds embeddings are concatenated and fed into a semantic segmentation module and a 3D keypoints localization module. Finally, we estimate 6D poses using a least-square fitting approach based on the target object's predicted semantic mask and 3D keypoints. In experiments on the LineMod and Occlusion LineMod datasets, SwinDePose outperforms existing state-of-the-art methods for 6D object pose estimation using depth images. This demonstrates the effectiveness of our approach and highlights its potential for improving performance in real-world scenarios. Our code is at //github.com/zhujunli1993/SwinDePose.

Despite substantial progress in 3D human pose estimation from a single-view image, prior works rarely explore global and local correlations, leading to insufficient learning of human skeleton representations. To address this issue, we propose a novel Interweaved Graph and Attention Network (IGANet) that allows bidirectional communications between graph convolutional networks (GCNs) and attentions. Specifically, we introduce an IGA module, where attentions are provided with local information from GCNs and GCNs are injected with global information from attentions. Additionally, we design a simple yet effective U-shaped multi-layer perceptron (uMLP), which can capture multi-granularity information for body joints. Extensive experiments on two popular benchmark datasets (i.e. Human3.6M and MPI-INF-3DHP) are conducted to evaluate our proposed method.The results show that IGANet achieves state-of-the-art performance on both datasets. Autonomous Nano Aerial Vehicles have been increasingly popular in surveillance and monitoring operations due to their efficiency and maneuverability. Once a target location has been reached, drones do not have to remain active during the mission. It is possible for the vehicle to perch and stop its motors in such situations to conserve energy, as well as maintain a static position in unfavorable flying conditions. In the perching target estimation phase, the steady and accuracy of a visual camera with markers is a significant challenge. It is rapidly detectable from afar when using a large marker, but when the drone approaches, it quickly disappears as out of camera view. In this paper, a vision-based target poses estimation method using multiple markers is proposed to deal with the above-mentioned problems. First, a perching target with a small marker inside a larger one is designed to improve detection capability at wide and close ranges. Second, the relative poses of the flying vehicle are calculated from detected markers using a monocular camera. Next, a Kalman filter is applied to provide a more stable and reliable pose estimation, especially when the measurement data is missing due to unexpected reasons. Finally, we introduced an algorithm for merging the poses data from multi markers. The poses are then sent to the position controller to align the drone and the marker's center and steer it to perch on the target. The experimental results demonstrated the effectiveness and feasibility of the adopted approach. The drone can perch successfully onto the center of the markers with the attached 25mm-diameter rounded magnet.

How can we estimate the importance of nodes in a knowledge graph (KG)? A KG is a multi-relational graph that has proven valuable for many tasks including question answering and semantic search. In this paper, we present GENI, a method for tackling the problem of estimating node importance in KGs, which enables several downstream applications such as item recommendation and resource allocation. While a number of approaches have been developed to address this problem for general graphs, they do not fully utilize information available in KGs, or lack flexibility needed to model complex relationship between entities and their importance. To address these limitations, we explore supervised machine learning algorithms. In particular, building upon recent advancement of graph neural networks (GNNs), we develop GENI, a GNN-based method designed to deal with distinctive challenges involved with predicting node importance in KGs. Our method performs an aggregation of importance scores instead of aggregating node embeddings via predicate-aware attention mechanism and flexible centrality adjustment. In our evaluation of GENI and existing methods on predicting node importance in real-world KGs with different characteristics, GENI achieves 5-17% higher NDCG@100 than the state of the art.

Benefit from the quick development of deep learning techniques, salient object detection has achieved remarkable progresses recently. However, there still exists following two major challenges that hinder its application in embedded devices, low resolution output and heavy model weight. To this end, this paper presents an accurate yet compact deep network for efficient salient object detection. More specifically, given a coarse saliency prediction in the deepest layer, we first employ residual learning to learn side-output residual features for saliency refinement, which can be achieved with very limited convolutional parameters while keep accuracy. Secondly, we further propose reverse attention to guide such side-output residual learning in a top-down manner. By erasing the current predicted salient regions from side-output features, the network can eventually explore the missing object parts and details which results in high resolution and accuracy. Experiments on six benchmark datasets demonstrate that the proposed approach compares favorably against state-of-the-art methods, and with advantages in terms of simplicity, efficiency (45 FPS) and model size (81 MB).

This work addresses a novel and challenging problem of estimating the full 3D hand shape and pose from a single RGB image. Most current methods in 3D hand analysis from monocular RGB images only focus on estimating the 3D locations of hand keypoints, which cannot fully express the 3D shape of hand. In contrast, we propose a Graph Convolutional Neural Network (Graph CNN) based method to reconstruct a full 3D mesh of hand surface that contains richer information of both 3D hand shape and pose. To train networks with full supervision, we create a large-scale synthetic dataset containing both ground truth 3D meshes and 3D poses. When fine-tuning the networks on real-world datasets without 3D ground truth, we propose a weakly-supervised approach by leveraging the depth map as a weak supervision in training. Through extensive evaluations on our proposed new datasets and two public datasets, we show that our proposed method can produce accurate and reasonable 3D hand mesh, and can achieve superior 3D hand pose estimation accuracy when compared with state-of-the-art methods.

We introduce a generic framework that reduces the computational cost of object detection while retaining accuracy for scenarios where objects with varied sizes appear in high resolution images. Detection progresses in a coarse-to-fine manner, first on a down-sampled version of the image and then on a sequence of higher resolution regions identified as likely to improve the detection accuracy. Built upon reinforcement learning, our approach consists of a model (R-net) that uses coarse detection results to predict the potential accuracy gain for analyzing a region at a higher resolution and another model (Q-net) that sequentially selects regions to zoom in. Experiments on the Caltech Pedestrians dataset show that our approach reduces the number of processed pixels by over 50% without a drop in detection accuracy. The merits of our approach become more significant on a high resolution test set collected from YFCC100M dataset, where our approach maintains high detection performance while reducing the number of processed pixels by about 70% and the detection time by over 50%.
