In this article a space-dependent epidemic model equipped with a constant latency period is examined. We construct a delay partial integro-differential equation and show that its solution possesses some biologically reasonable features. We propose some numerical schemes and show that by choosing the time step to be sufficiently small the schemes preserve the qualitative properties of the original continuous model. Finally, some numerical experiments are presented that confirm the aforementioned theoretical results.

We present a midpoint policy iteration algorithm to solve linear quadratic optimal control problems in both model-based and model-free settings. The algorithm is a variation of Newton's method, and we show that in the model-based setting it achieves cubic convergence, which is superior to standard policy iteration and policy gradient algorithms that achieve quadratic and linear convergence, respectively. We also demonstrate that the algorithm can be approximately implemented without knowledge of the dynamics model by using least-squares estimates of the state-action value function from trajectory data, from which policy improvements can be obtained. With sufficient trajectory data, the policy iterates converge cubically to approximately optimal policies, and this occurs with the same available sample budget as the approximate standard policy iteration. Numerical experiments demonstrate effectiveness of the proposed algorithms.

The dynamic iteration method with a restricted additive Schwarz splitting is investigated to co-simulate linear differential algebraic equations system coming from RLC electrical circuit with linear components. We show the pure linear convergence or divergence of the method with respect to the linear operator belonging to the restricted additive Schwarz interface. It allows us to accelerate it toward the true solution with the Aitken's technique for accelerating convergence. This provides a dynamic iteration method less sensitive to the splitting. Numerical examples with convergent and divergent splitting show the efficiency of the proposed approach. We also test it on a linear RLC circuit combining different types of circuit modeling (Transient Stability model and Electro-Magnetic Transient model) with overlapping partitions. Finally, some results for a weakly nonlinear differential algebraic equations system are also provided.

We consider the NP-hard problem of approximating a tensor with binary entries by a rank-one tensor, referred to as rank-one Boolean tensor factorization problem. We formulate this problem, in an extended space of variables, as the problem of minimizing a linear function over a highly structured multilinear set. Leveraging on our prior results regarding the facial structure of multilinear polytopes, we propose novel linear programming relaxations for rank-one Boolean tensor factorization. To analyze the performance of the proposed linear programs, we consider a random corruption model for the input tensor. We first consider the original NP-hard problem and establish information theoretic limits under the random model. Next, we obtain sufficient conditions under which the proposed linear programming relaxations recover the ground truth with high probability. Our theoretical results as well as numerical simulations indicate that certain facets of the multilinear polytope significantly improve the recovery properties of linear programming relaxations for rank-one Boolean tensor factorization.

In $d$ dimensions, approximating an arbitrary function oscillating with frequency $\lesssim k$ requires $\sim k^d$ degrees of freedom. A numerical method for solving the Helmholtz equation (with wavenumber $k$) suffers from the pollution effect if, as $k\to \infty$, the total number of degrees of freedom needed to maintain accuracy grows faster than this natural threshold. While the $h$-version of the finite element method (FEM) (where accuracy is increased by decreasing the meshwidth $h$ and keeping the polynomial degree $p$ fixed) suffers from the pollution effect, the celebrated papers [Melenk, Sauter 2010], [Melenk, Sauter 2011], [Esterhazy, Melenk 2012], and [Melenk, Parsania, Sauter 2013] showed that the $hp$-FEM (where accuracy is increased by decreasing the meshwidth $h$ and increasing the polynomial degree $p$) applied to a variety of constant-coefficient Helmholtz problems does not suffer from the pollution effect. The heart of the proofs of these results is a PDE result splitting the solution of the Helmholtz equation into "high" and "low" frequency components. The main novelty of the present paper is that we prove this splitting for the constant-coefficient Helmholtz equation in full-space (i.e., in $\mathbb{R}^d$) using only integration by parts and elementary properties of the Fourier transform (this is contrast to the proof for this set-up in [Melenk, Sauter 2010] which uses somewhat-involved bounds on Bessel and Hankel functions). We combine this splitting with (i) standard arguments about convergence of the FEM applied to the Helmholtz equation (the so-called "Schatz argument", which we reproduce here) and (ii) polynomial-approximation results (which we quote from the literature without proof) to give a simple proof that the $hp$-FEM does not suffer from the pollution effect for the constant-coefficient full-space Helmholtz equation.

We propose a collocation method based on multivariate polynomial splines over triangulation or tetrahedralization for the numerical solution of partial differential equations. We start with a detailed explanation of the method for the Poisson equation and then extend the study to the second-order elliptic PDE in non-divergence form. We shall show that the numerical solution can approximate the exact PDE solution very well. Then we present a large amount of numerical experimental results to demonstrate the performance of the method over the 2D and 3D settings. In addition, we present a comparison with the existing multivariate spline methods in \cite{ALW06} and \cite{LW17} to show that the new method produces a similar and sometimes more accurate approximation in a more efficient fashion.

A singularly perturbed parabolic problem of convection-diffusion type with a discontinuous initial condition is examined. An analytic function is identified which matches the discontinuity in the initial condition and also satisfies the homogenous parabolic differential equation associated with the problem. The difference between this analytical function and the solution of the parabolic problem is approximated numerically, using an upwind finite difference operator combined with an appropriate layer-adapted mesh. The numerical method is shown to be parameter-uniform. Numerical results are presented to illustrate the theoretical error bounds established in the paper.

The $\mathsf{HYBRID}$ model was introduced as a means for theoretical study of distributed networks that use various communication modes. Conceptually, it is a synchronous message passing model with a local communication mode, where in each round each node can send large messages to all its neighbors in a local network (a graph), and a global communication mode, where each node is allotted limited (polylogarithmic) bandwidth per round which it can use to communicate with any node in the network. Prior work has often focused on shortest paths problems in the local network, as their global nature makes these an interesting case study how combining communication modes in the $\mathsf{HYBRID}$ model can overcome the individual lower bounds of either mode. In this work we consider a similar problem, namely computation of distance oracles and routing schemes. In the former, all nodes have to compute local tables, which allows them to look up the distance (estimates) to any target node in the local network when provided with the label of the target. In the latter, it suffices that nodes give the next node on an (approximately) shortest path to the target. Our goal is to compute these local tables as fast as possible with labels as small as possible. We show that this can be done exactly in $\widetilde O(n^{1/3})$ communication rounds and labels of size $\Theta(n^{2/3})$ bits. For constant stretch approximations we achieve labels of size $O(\log n)$ in the same time. Further, as our main technical contribution, we provide computational lower bounds for a variety of problem parameters. For instance, we show that computing solutions with stretch below a certain constant takes $\widetilde \Omega(n^{1/3})$ rounds even for labels of size $O(n^{2/3})$.

When applied to stiff, linear differential equations with time-dependent forcing, Runge-Kutta methods can exhibit convergence rates lower than predicted by the classical order condition theory. Commonly, this order reduction phenomenon is addressed by using an expensive, fully implicit Runge-Kutta method with high stage order or a specialized scheme satisfying additional order conditions. This work develops a flexible approach of augmenting an arbitrary Runge-Kutta method with a fully implicit method used to treat the forcing such as to maintain the classical order of the base scheme. Our methods and analyses are based on the general-structure additive Runge-Kutta framework. Numerical experiments using diagonally implicit, fully implicit, and even explicit Runge-Kutta methods confirm that the new approach eliminates order reduction for the class of problems under consideration, and the base methods achieve their theoretical orders of convergence.

Partially linear additive models generalize linear ones since they model the relation between a response variable and covariates by assuming that some covariates have a linear relation with the response but each of the others enter through unknown univariate smooth functions. The harmful effect of outliers either in the residuals or in the covariates involved in the linear component has been described in the situation of partially linear models, that is, when only one nonparametric component is involved in the model. When dealing with additive components, the problem of providing reliable estimators when atypical data arise, is of practical importance motivating the need of robust procedures. Hence, we propose a family of robust estimators for partially linear additive models by combining $B-$splines with robust linear regression estimators. We obtain consistency results, rates of convergence and asymptotic normality for the linear components, under mild assumptions. A Monte Carlo study is carried out to compare the performance of the robust proposal with its classical counterpart under different models and contamination schemes. The numerical experiments show the advantage of the proposed methodology for finite samples. We also illustrate the usefulness of the proposed approach on a real data set.

We consider a kinetic description of a multi-species gas mixture modeled with Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook (BGK) collision operators, in which the collision frequency varies not only in time and space but also with the microscopic velocity. In this model, the Maxwellians typically used in standard BGK operators are replaced by a generalization of such target functions, which are defined by a variational procedure \cite{arXiv:2101.09047}. In this paper we present a numerical method for simulating this model, which uses an Implicit-Explicit (IMEX) scheme to minimize a certain potential function, mimicking the Lagrange functional that appears in the theoretical derivation. We show that theoretical properties such as conservation of mass, total momentum and total energy as well as positivity of the distribution functions are preserved by the numerical method, and illustrate its usefulness and effectiveness with numerical examples.
