Intertemporal choices involve making decisions that require weighing the costs in the present against the benefits in the future. One specific type of intertemporal choice is the decision between purchasing an individual item or opting for a bundle that includes that item. Previous research assumes that individuals have accurate expectations of the factors involved in these choices. However, in reality, users' perceptions of these factors are often biased, leading to irrational and suboptimal decision-making. In this work, we specifically focus on two commonly observed biases: projection bias and the reference-point effect. To address these biases, we propose a novel bias-embedded preference model called Probe. The Probe incorporates a weight function to capture users' projection bias and a value function to account for the reference-point effect, and introduce prospect theory from behavioral economics to combine the weight and value functions. This allows us to determine the probability of users selecting the bundle or a single item. We provide a thorough theoretical analysis to demonstrate the impact of projection bias on the design of bundle sales strategies. Through experimental results, we show that the proposed Probe model outperforms existing methods and contributes to a better understanding of users' irrational behaviors in bundle purchases. This investigation can facilitate a deeper comprehension of users' decision-making mechanisms, enable the provision of personalized services, and assist users in making more rational and optimal decisions.

Security metrics are not standardized, but inter-national proposals such as the Common Vulnerability ScoringSystem (CVSS) for quantifying the severity of known vulnerabil-ities are widely used. Many CVSS aggregation mechanisms havebeen proposed in the literature. Nevertheless, factors related tothe context of the System Under Test (SUT) are not taken intoaccount in the aggregation process; vulnerabilities that in theoryaffect the SUT, but are not exploitable in reality. We propose aCVSS aggregation algorithm that integrates information aboutthe functionality disruption of the SUT, exploitation difficulty,existence of exploits, and the context where the SUT operates.The aggregation algorithm was applied to OpenPLC V3, showingthat it is capable of filtering out vulnerabilities that cannot beexploited in the real conditions of deployment of the particularsystem. Finally, because of the nature of the proposed algorithm,the result can be interpreted in the same way as a normal CVSS.

Large Language Models (LLMs) have shown promise in the autonomous driving sector, particularly in generalization and interpretability. We introduce a unique object-level multimodal LLM architecture that merges vectorized numeric modalities with a pre-trained LLM to improve context understanding in driving situations. We also present a new dataset of 160k QA pairs derived from 10k driving scenarios, paired with high quality control commands collected with RL agent and question answer pairs generated by teacher LLM (GPT-3.5). A distinct pretraining strategy is devised to align numeric vector modalities with static LLM representations using vector captioning language data. We also introduce an evaluation metric for Driving QA and demonstrate our LLM-driver's proficiency in interpreting driving scenarios, answering questions, and decision-making. Our findings highlight the potential of LLM-based driving action generation in comparison to traditional behavioral cloning. We make our benchmark, datasets, and model available for further exploration.

Human evaluation plays a crucial role in Natural Language Processing (NLP) as it assesses the quality and relevance of developed systems, thereby facilitating their enhancement. However, the absence of widely accepted human evaluation metrics in NLP hampers fair comparisons among different systems and the establishment of universal assessment standards. Through an extensive analysis of existing literature on human evaluation metrics, we identified several gaps in NLP evaluation methodologies. These gaps served as motivation for developing our own hierarchical evaluation framework. The proposed framework offers notable advantages, particularly in providing a more comprehensive representation of the NLP system's performance. We applied this framework to evaluate the developed Machine Reading Comprehension system, which was utilized within a human-AI symbiosis model. The results highlighted the associations between the quality of inputs and outputs, underscoring the necessity to evaluate both components rather than solely focusing on outputs. In future work, we will investigate the potential time-saving benefits of our proposed framework for evaluators assessing NLP systems.

Recent advances in Neural Radiance Fields (NeRF) have demonstrated significant potential for representing 3D scene appearances as implicit neural networks, enabling the synthesis of high-fidelity novel views. However, the lengthy training and rendering process hinders the widespread adoption of this promising technique for real-time rendering applications. To address this issue, we present an effective adaptive multi-NeRF method designed to accelerate the neural rendering process for large scenes with unbalanced workloads due to varying scene complexities. Our method adaptively subdivides scenes into axis-aligned bounding boxes using a tree hierarchy approach, assigning smaller NeRFs to different-sized subspaces based on the complexity of each scene portion. This ensures the underlying neural representation is specific to a particular part of the scene. We optimize scene subdivision by employing a guidance density grid, which balances representation capability for each Multilayer Perceptron (MLP). Consequently, samples generated by each ray can be sorted and collected for parallel inference, achieving a balanced workload suitable for small MLPs with consistent dimensions for regular and GPU-friendly computations. We aosl demonstrated an efficient NeRF sampling strategy that intrinsically adapts to increase parallelism, utilization, and reduce kernel calls, thereby achieving much higher GPU utilization and accelerating the rendering process.

Unfamiliar decisions -- decisions where people lack adequate domain knowledge or expertise -- specifically increase the complexity and uncertainty of the process of searching for, understanding, and making decisions with online information. Through our formative study (n=14), we observed users' challenges in accessing diverse perspectives, identifying relevant information, and deciding the right moment to make the final decision. We present ChoiceMates, a system that enables conversations with a dynamic set of LLM-powered agents for a holistic domain understanding and efficient discovery and management of information to make decisions. Agents, as opinionated personas, flexibly join the conversation, not only providing responses but also conversing among themselves to elicit each agent's preferences. Our between-subjects study (n=36) comparing ChoiceMates to conventional web search and single-agent showed that ChoiceMates was more helpful in discovering, diving deeper, and managing information compared to Web with higher confidence. We also describe how participants utilized multi-agent conversations in their decision-making process.

While recent research has made significant progress in speech-driven talking face generation, the quality of the generated video still lags behind that of real recordings. One reason for this is the use of handcrafted intermediate representations like facial landmarks and 3DMM coefficients, which are designed based on human knowledge and are insufficient to precisely describe facial movements. Additionally, these methods require an external pretrained model for extracting these representations, whose performance sets an upper bound on talking face generation. To address these limitations, we propose a novel method called DAE-Talker that leverages data-driven latent representations obtained from a diffusion autoencoder (DAE). DAE contains an image encoder that encodes an image into a latent vector and a DDIM image decoder that reconstructs the image from it. We train our DAE on talking face video frames and then extract their latent representations as the training target for a Conformer-based speech2latent model. This allows DAE-Talker to synthesize full video frames and produce natural head movements that align with the content of speech, rather than relying on a predetermined head pose from a template video. We also introduce pose modelling in speech2latent for pose controllability. Additionally, we propose a novel method for generating continuous video frames with the DDIM image decoder trained on individual frames, eliminating the need for modelling the joint distribution of consecutive frames directly. Our experiments show that DAE-Talker outperforms existing popular methods in lip-sync, video fidelity, and pose naturalness. We also conduct ablation studies to analyze the effectiveness of the proposed techniques and demonstrate the pose controllability of DAE-Talker.

Robot sequential decision-making in the real world is a challenge because it requires the robots to simultaneously reason about the current world state and dynamics, while planning actions to accomplish complex tasks. On the one hand, declarative languages and reasoning algorithms well support representing and reasoning with commonsense knowledge. But these algorithms are not good at planning actions toward maximizing cumulative reward over a long, unspecified horizon. On the other hand, probabilistic planning frameworks, such as Markov decision processes (MDPs) and partially observable MDPs (POMDPs), well support planning to achieve long-term goals under uncertainty. But they are ill-equipped to represent or reason about knowledge that is not directly related to actions. In this article, we present a novel algorithm, called iCORPP, to simultaneously estimate the current world state, reason about world dynamics, and construct task-oriented controllers. In this process, robot decision-making problems are decomposed into two interdependent (smaller) subproblems that focus on reasoning to "understand the world" and planning to "achieve the goal" respectively. Contextual knowledge is represented in the reasoning component, which makes the planning component epistemic and enables active information gathering. The developed algorithm has been implemented and evaluated both in simulation and on real robots using everyday service tasks, such as indoor navigation, dialog management, and object delivery. Results show significant improvements in scalability, efficiency, and adaptiveness, compared to competitive baselines including handcrafted action policies.

Recently, the remarkable advance of the Large Language Model (LLM) has inspired researchers to transfer its extraordinary reasoning capability to both vision and language data. However, the prevailing approaches primarily regard the visual input as a prompt and focus exclusively on optimizing the text generation process conditioned upon vision content by a frozen LLM. Such an inequitable treatment of vision and language heavily constrains the model's potential. In this paper, we break through this limitation by representing both vision and language in a unified form. Specifically, we introduce a well-designed visual tokenizer to translate the non-linguistic image into a sequence of discrete tokens like a foreign language that LLM can read. The resulting visual tokens encompass high-level semantics worthy of a word and also support dynamic sequence length varying from the image. Coped with this tokenizer, the presented foundation model called LaVIT can handle both image and text indiscriminately under the same generative learning paradigm. This unification empowers LaVIT to serve as an impressive generalist interface to understand and generate multi-modal content simultaneously. Extensive experiments further showcase that it outperforms the existing models by a large margin on massive vision-language tasks. Our code and models will be available at //github.com/jy0205/LaVIT.

Computer-based decision systems are widely used to automate decisions in many aspects of everyday life, which include sensitive areas like hiring, loaning and even criminal sentencing. A decision pipeline heavily relies on large volumes of historical real-world data for training its models. However, historical training data often contains gender, racial or other biases which are propagated to the trained models influencing computer-based decisions. In this work, we propose a robust methodology that guarantees the removal of unwanted biases while maximally preserving classification utility. Our approach can always achieve this in a model-independent way by deriving from real-world data the asymptotic dataset that uniquely encodes demographic parity and realism. As a proof-of-principle, we deduce from public census records such an asymptotic dataset from which synthetic samples can be generated to train well-established classifiers. Benchmarking the generalization capability of these classifiers trained on our synthetic data, we confirm the absence of any explicit or implicit bias in the computer-aided decision.

Reasoning is a fundamental aspect of human intelligence that plays a crucial role in activities such as problem solving, decision making, and critical thinking. In recent years, large language models (LLMs) have made significant progress in natural language processing, and there is observation that these models may exhibit reasoning abilities when they are sufficiently large. However, it is not yet clear to what extent LLMs are capable of reasoning. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of the current state of knowledge on reasoning in LLMs, including techniques for improving and eliciting reasoning in these models, methods and benchmarks for evaluating reasoning abilities, findings and implications of previous research in this field, and suggestions on future directions. Our aim is to provide a detailed and up-to-date review of this topic and stimulate meaningful discussion and future work.
