Minimizing traffic accidents between vehicles and pedestrians is one of the primary research goals in intelligent transportation systems. To achieve the goal, pedestrian orientation recognition and prediction of pedestrian's crossing or not-crossing intention play a central role. Contemporary approaches do not guarantee satisfactory performance due to limited field-of-view, lack of generalization, and high computational complexity. To overcome these limitations, we propose a real-time predictive pedestrian collision warning service (P2CWS) for two tasks: pedestrian orientation recognition (100.53 FPS) and intention prediction (35.76 FPS). Our framework obtains satisfying generalization over multiple sites because of the proposed site-independent features. At the center of the feature extraction lies 3D pose estimation. The 3D pose analysis enables robust and accurate recognition of pedestrian orientations and prediction of intentions over multiple sites. The proposed vision framework realizes 89.3% accuracy in the behavior recognition task on the TUD dataset without any training process and 91.28% accuracy in intention prediction on our dataset achieving new state-of-the-art performance. Appearance-based gaze estimation aims to predict the 3D eye gaze direction from a single image. While recent deep learning-based approaches have demonstrated excellent performance, they usually assume one calibrated face in each input image and cannot output multi-person gaze in real time. However, simultaneous gaze estimation for multiple people in the wild is necessary for real-world applications. In this paper, we propose the first one-stage end-to-end gaze estimation method, GazeOnce, which is capable of simultaneously predicting gaze directions for multiple faces (>10) in an image. In addition, we design a sophisticated data generation pipeline and propose a new dataset, MPSGaze, which contains full images of multiple people with 3D gaze ground truth. Experimental results demonstrate that our unified framework not only offers a faster speed, but also provides a lower gaze estimation error compared with state-of-the-art methods. This technique can be useful in real-time applications with multiple users.

Recently, model-based agents have achieved better performance compared with model-free ones using the same computational budget and training time in single-agent environments. However, due to the complexity of multi-agent systems, it is very difficult to learn the model of the environment. When model-based methods are applied to multi-agent tasks, the significant compounding error may hinder the learning process. In this paper, we propose an implicit model-based multi-agent reinforcement learning method based on value decomposition methods. Under this method, agents can interact with the learned virtual environment and evaluate the current state value according to imagined future states, which makes agents have foresight. Our method can be applied to any multi-agent value decomposition method. The experimental results show that our method improves the sample efficiency in partially observable Markov decision process domains.

Recent advances in deep learning and computer vision offer an excellent opportunity to investigate high-level visual analysis tasks such as human localization and human pose estimation. Although the performance of human localization and human pose estimation has significantly improved in recent reports, they are not perfect and erroneous localization and pose estimation can be expected among video frames. Studies on the integration of these techniques into a generic pipeline that is robust to noise introduced from those errors are still lacking. This paper fills the missing study. We explored and developed two working pipelines that suited the visual-based positioning and pose estimation tasks. Analyses of the proposed pipelines were conducted on a badminton game. We showed that the concept of tracking by detection could work well, and errors in position and pose could be effectively handled by a linear interpolation technique using information from nearby frames. The results showed that the Visual-based Positioning and Pose Estimation could deliver position and pose estimations with good spatial and temporal resolutions.

The development of autonomous vehicles provides an opportunity to have a complete set of camera sensors capturing the environment around the car. Thus, it is important for object detection and tracking to address new challenges, such as achieving consistent results across views of cameras. To address these challenges, this work presents a new Global Association Graph Model with Link Prediction approach to predict existing tracklets location and link detections with tracklets via cross-attention motion modeling and appearance re-identification. This approach aims at solving issues caused by inconsistent 3D object detection. Moreover, our model exploits to improve the detection accuracy of a standard 3D object detector in the nuScenes detection challenge. The experimental results on the nuScenes dataset demonstrate the benefits of the proposed method to produce SOTA performance on the existing vision-based tracking dataset.

Whole-body 3D human mesh estimation aims to reconstruct the 3D human body, hands, and face simultaneously. Although several methods have been proposed, accurate prediction of 3D hands, which consist of 3D wrist and fingers, still remains challenging due to two reasons. First, the human kinematic chain has not been carefully considered when predicting the 3D wrists. Second, previous works utilize body features for the 3D fingers, where the body feature barely contains finger information. To resolve the limitations, we present Hand4Whole, which has two strong points over previous works. First, we design Pose2Pose, a module that utilizes joint features for 3D joint rotations. Using Pose2Pose, Hand4Whole utilizes hand MCP joint features to predict 3D wrists as MCP joints largely contribute to 3D wrist rotations in the human kinematic chain. Second, Hand4Whole discards the body feature when predicting 3D finger rotations. Our Hand4Whole is trained in an end-to-end manner and produces much better 3D hand results than previous whole-body 3D human mesh estimation methods. Developing controllers for obstacle avoidance between polytopes is a challenging and necessary problem for navigation in tight spaces. Traditional approaches can only formulate the obstacle avoidance problem as an offline optimization problem. To address these challenges, we propose a duality-based safety-critical optimal control using nonsmooth control barrier functions for obstacle avoidance between polytopes, which can be solved in real-time with a QP-based optimization problem. A dual optimization problem is introduced to represent the minimum distance between polytopes and the Lagrangian function for the dual form is applied to construct a control barrier function. We validate the obstacle avoidance with the proposed dual formulation for L-shaped (sofa-shaped) controlled robot in a corridor environment. We demonstrate real-time tight obstacle avoidance with non-conservative maneuvers on a moving sofa (piano) problem with nonlinear dynamics.

This paper presents GoPose, a 3D skeleton-based human pose estimation system that uses WiFi devices at home. Our system leverages the WiFi signals reflected off the human body for 3D pose estimation. In contrast to prior systems that need specialized hardware or dedicated sensors, our system does not require a user to wear or carry any sensors and can reuse the WiFi devices that already exist in a home environment for mass adoption. To realize such a system, we leverage the 2D AoA spectrum of the signals reflected from the human body and the deep learning techniques. In particular, the 2D AoA spectrum is proposed to locate different parts of the human body as well as to enable environment-independent pose estimation. Deep learning is incorporated to model the complex relationship between the 2D AoA spectrums and the 3D skeletons of the human body for pose tracking. Our evaluation results show GoPose achieves around 4.7cm of accuracy under various scenarios including tracking unseen activities and under NLoS scenarios.

Multi-camera vehicle tracking is one of the most complicated tasks in Computer Vision as it involves distinct tasks including Vehicle Detection, Tracking, and Re-identification. Despite the challenges, multi-camera vehicle tracking has immense potential in transportation applications including speed, volume, origin-destination (O-D), and routing data generation. Several recent works have addressed the multi-camera tracking problem. However, most of the effort has gone towards improving accuracy on high-quality benchmark datasets while disregarding lower camera resolutions, compression artifacts and the overwhelming amount of computational power and time needed to carry out this task on its edge and thus making it prohibitive for large-scale and real-time deployment. Therefore, in this work we shed light on practical issues that should be addressed for the design of a multi-camera tracking system to provide actionable and timely insights. Moreover, we propose a real-time city-scale multi-camera vehicle tracking system that compares favorably to computationally intensive alternatives and handles real-world, low-resolution CCTV instead of idealized and curated video streams. To show its effectiveness, in addition to integration into the Regional Integrated Transportation Information System (RITIS), we participated in the 2021 NVIDIA AI City multi-camera tracking challenge and our method is ranked among the top five performers on the public leaderboard.

We propose a new method for event extraction (EE) task based on an imitation learning framework, specifically, inverse reinforcement learning (IRL) via generative adversarial network (GAN). The GAN estimates proper rewards according to the difference between the actions committed by the expert (or ground truth) and the agent among complicated states in the environment. EE task benefits from these dynamic rewards because instances and labels yield to various extents of difficulty and the gains are expected to be diverse -- e.g., an ambiguous but correctly detected trigger or argument should receive high gains -- while the traditional RL models usually neglect such differences and pay equal attention on all instances. Moreover, our experiments also demonstrate that the proposed framework outperforms state-of-the-art methods, without explicit feature engineering.

Automatic License Plate Recognition (ALPR) has been a frequent topic of research due to many practical applications. However, many of the current solutions are still not robust in real-world situations, commonly depending on many constraints. This paper presents a robust and efficient ALPR system based on the state-of-the-art YOLO object detection. The Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) are trained and fine-tuned for each ALPR stage so that they are robust under different conditions (e.g., variations in camera, lighting, and background). Specially for character segmentation and recognition, we design a two-stage approach employing simple data augmentation tricks such as inverted License Plates (LPs) and flipped characters. The resulting ALPR approach achieved impressive results in two datasets. First, in the SSIG dataset, composed of 2,000 frames from 101 vehicle videos, our system achieved a recognition rate of 93.53% and 47 Frames Per Second (FPS), performing better than both Sighthound and OpenALPR commercial systems (89.80% and 93.03%, respectively) and considerably outperforming previous results (81.80%). Second, targeting a more realistic scenario, we introduce a larger public dataset, called UFPR-ALPR dataset, designed to ALPR. This dataset contains 150 videos and 4,500 frames captured when both camera and vehicles are moving and also contains different types of vehicles (cars, motorcycles, buses and trucks). In our proposed dataset, the trial versions of commercial systems achieved recognition rates below 70%. On the other hand, our system performed better, with recognition rate of 78.33% and 35 FPS.
