Several decades ago the Proximal Point Algorithm (PPA) started to gain a long-lasting attraction for both abstract operator theory and numerical optimization communities. Even in modern applications, researchers still use proximal minimization theory to design scalable algorithms that overcome nonsmoothness. Remarkable works as \cite{Fer:91,Ber:82constrained,Ber:89parallel,Tom:11} established tight relations between the convergence behaviour of PPA and the regularity of the objective function. In this manuscript we derive nonasymptotic iteration complexity of exact and inexact PPA to minimize convex functions under $\gamma-$Holderian growth: $\BigO{\log(1/\epsilon)}$ (for $\gamma \in [1,2]$) and $\BigO{1/\epsilon^{\gamma - 2}}$ (for $\gamma > 2$). In particular, we recover well-known results on PPA: finite convergence for sharp minima and linear convergence for quadratic growth, even under presence of deterministic noise. Moreover, when a simple Proximal Subgradient Method is recurrently called as an inner routine for computing each IPPA iterate, novel computational complexity bounds are obtained for Restarting Inexact PPA. Our numerical tests show improvements over existing restarting versions of the Subgradient Method.

We propose a novel approach for modeling semantic contextual relationships in videos. This graph-based model enables the learning and propagation of higher-level spatial-temporal contexts to facilitate the semantic labeling of local regions. We introduce an exemplar-based nonparametric view of contextual cues, where the inherent relationships implied by object hypotheses are encoded on a similarity graph of regions. Contextual relationships learning and propagation are performed to estimate the pairwise contexts between all pairs of unlabeled local regions. Our algorithm integrates the learned contexts into a Conditional Random Field (CRF) in the form of pairwise potentials and infers the per-region semantic labels. We evaluate our approach on the challenging YouTube-Objects dataset which shows that the proposed contextual relationship model outperforms the state-of-the-art methods.

In recent years, linear complementary pairs (LCP) of codes and linear complementary dual (LCD) codes have gained significant attention due to their applications in coding theory and cryptography. In this work, we construct explicit LCPs of codes and LCD codes from function fields of genus $g \geq 1$. To accomplish this, we present pairs of suitable divisors giving rise to non-special divisors of degree $g-1$ in the function field. The results are applied in constructing LCPs of algebraic geometry codes and LCD algebraic geometry (AG) codes in Kummer extensions, hyperelliptic function fields, and elliptic curves.

In the field of Sequential Decision Making (SDM), two paradigms have historically vied for supremacy: Automated Planning (AP) and Reinforcement Learning (RL). In the spirit of reconciliation, this article reviews AP, RL and hybrid methods (e.g., novel learn to plan techniques) for solving Sequential Decision Processes (SDPs), focusing on their knowledge representation: symbolic, subsymbolic, or a combination. Additionally, it also covers methods for learning the SDP structure. Finally, we compare the advantages and drawbacks of the existing methods and conclude that neurosymbolic AI poses a promising approach for SDM, since it combines AP and RL with a hybrid knowledge representation.

With the recent addition of Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), the scope and importance of Information Retrieval (IR) has expanded. As a result, the importance of a deeper understanding of IR models also increases. However, interpretability in IR remains under-explored, especially when it comes to the models' inner mechanisms. In this paper, we explore the possibility of adapting Integrated Gradient-based methods in an IR context to identify the role of individual neurons within the model. In particular, we provide new insights into the role of what we call "relevance" neurons, as well as how they deal with unseen data. Finally, we carry out an in-depth pruning study to validate our findings.

Due to the effective performance of multi-scale feature fusion, Path Aggregation FPN (PAFPN) is widely employed in YOLO detectors. However, it cannot efficiently and adaptively integrate high-level semantic information with low-level spatial information simultaneously. We propose a new model named MAF-YOLO in this paper, which is a novel object detection framework with a versatile neck named Multi-Branch Auxiliary FPN (MAFPN). Within MAFPN, the Superficial Assisted Fusion (SAF) module is designed to combine the output of the backbone with the neck, preserving an optimal level of shallow information to facilitate subsequent learning. Meanwhile, the Advanced Assisted Fusion (AAF) module deeply embedded within the neck conveys a more diverse range of gradient information to the output layer. Furthermore, our proposed Re-parameterized Heterogeneous Efficient Layer Aggregation Network (RepHELAN) module ensures that both the overall model architecture and convolutional design embrace the utilization of heterogeneous large convolution kernels. Therefore, this guarantees the preservation of information related to small targets while simultaneously achieving the multi-scale receptive field. Finally, taking the nano version of MAF-YOLO for example, it can achieve 42.4% AP on COCO with only 3.76M learnable parameters and 10.51G FLOPs, and approximately outperforms YOLOv8n by about 5.1%. Short-Term object-interaction Anticipation (STA) consists of detecting the location of the next-active objects, the noun and verb categories of the interaction, and the time to contact from the observation of egocentric video. We propose STAformer, a novel attention-based architecture integrating frame-guided temporal pooling, dual image-video attention, and multi-scale feature fusion to support STA predictions from an image-input video pair. Moreover, we introduce two novel modules to ground STA predictions on human behavior by modeling affordances. First, we integrate an environment affordance model which acts as a persistent memory of interactions that can take place in a given physical scene. Second, we predict interaction hotspots from the observation of hands and object trajectories, increasing confidence in STA predictions localized around the hotspot. On the test set, our results obtain a final 33.5 N mAP, 17.25 N+V mAP, 11.77 N+{\delta} mAP and 6.75 Overall top-5 mAP metric when trained on the v2 training dataset.

Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) has achieved remarkable success, ranging from complex computer games to real-world applications, showing the potential for intelligent agents capable of learning in dynamic environments. However, its application in real-world scenarios presents challenges, including the jerky problem, in which jerky trajectories not only compromise system safety but also increase power consumption and shorten the service life of robotic and autonomous systems. To address jerky actions, a method called conditioning for action policy smoothness (CAPS) was proposed by adding regularization terms to reduce the action changes. This paper further proposes a novel method, named Gradient-based CAPS (Grad-CAPS), that modifies CAPS by reducing the difference in the gradient of action and then uses displacement normalization to enable the agent to adapt to invariant action scales. Consequently, our method effectively reduces zigzagging action sequences while enhancing policy expressiveness and the adaptability of our method across diverse scenarios and environments. In the experiments, we integrated Grad-CAPS with different reinforcement learning algorithms and evaluated its performance on various robotic-related tasks in DeepMind Control Suite and OpenAI Gym environments. The results demonstrate that Grad-CAPS effectively improves performance while maintaining a comparable level of smoothness compared to CAPS and Vanilla agents.

The major challenge when designing multipliers for FPGAs is to address several trade-offs: On the one hand at the performance level and on the other hand at the resource level utilizing DSP blocks or look-up tables (LUTs). With DSPs being a relatively limited resource, the problem of under- or over-utilization of DSPs has previously been addressed by the concept of multiplier tiling, by assembling multipliers from DSPs and small supplemental LUT multipliers. But there had always been an efficiency gap between tiling-based multipliers and radix-4 Booth-Arrays. While the monolithic Booth-Array was shown to be considerably more efficient in terms of LUT-resources on many modern FPGA-architectures, it typically possess a significantly higher critically path delay (or latency when pipelined) compared to multipliers designed by tiling. This work proposes and analyzes the use of smaller Booth-Arrays as sub-multipliers that are integrated into existing tiling-based methods, such that better trade-off points between area and delay can be reached while utilizing a user-specified number of DSP blocks. It is shown by synthesis experiments, that the critical path delay compared to large Booth-Arrays can be reduced, while achieving significant reductions in LUT-resources compared to previous tiling.

Although measuring held-out accuracy has been the primary approach to evaluate generalization, it often overestimates the performance of NLP models, while alternative approaches for evaluating models either focus on individual tasks or on specific behaviors. Inspired by principles of behavioral testing in software engineering, we introduce CheckList, a task-agnostic methodology for testing NLP models. CheckList includes a matrix of general linguistic capabilities and test types that facilitate comprehensive test ideation, as well as a software tool to generate a large and diverse number of test cases quickly. We illustrate the utility of CheckList with tests for three tasks, identifying critical failures in both commercial and state-of-art models. In a user study, a team responsible for a commercial sentiment analysis model found new and actionable bugs in an extensively tested model. In another user study, NLP practitioners with CheckList created twice as many tests, and found almost three times as many bugs as users without it.

Within the rapidly developing Internet of Things (IoT), numerous and diverse physical devices, Edge devices, Cloud infrastructure, and their quality of service requirements (QoS), need to be represented within a unified specification in order to enable rapid IoT application development, monitoring, and dynamic reconfiguration. But heterogeneities among different configuration knowledge representation models pose limitations for acquisition, discovery and curation of configuration knowledge for coordinated IoT applications. This paper proposes a unified data model to represent IoT resource configuration knowledge artifacts. It also proposes IoT-CANE (Context-Aware recommendatioN systEm) to facilitate incremental knowledge acquisition and declarative context driven knowledge recommendation.
