Transportation agencies need to assess ramp metering performance when deploying or expanding a ramp metering system. The evaluation of a ramp metering strategy is primarily centered around examining its impact on freeway traffic mobility. One way these effects can be explored is by comparing traffic states, such as the speed before and after the ramp metering strategy has been altered. Predicting freeway traffic states for the after scenarios following the implementation of a new ramp metering control strategy could offer valuable insights into the potential effectiveness of the target strategy. However, the use of machine learning methods in predicting the freeway traffic state for the after scenarios and evaluating the effectiveness of transportation policies or traffic control strategies such as ramp metering is somewhat limited in the current literature. To bridge the research gap, this study presents a framework for predicting freeway traffic parameters (speed, occupancy, and flow rate) for the after situations when a new ramp metering control strategy is implemented. By learning the association between the spatial-temporal features of traffic states in before and after situations for known freeway segments, the proposed framework can transfer this learning to predict the traffic parameters for new freeway segments. The proposed framework is built upon a transfer learning model. Experimental results show that the proposed framework is feasible for use as an alternative for predicting freeway traffic parameters to proactively evaluate ramp metering performance.

There is a rapidly growing number of open-source Large Language Models (LLMs) and benchmark datasets to compare them. While some models dominate these benchmarks, no single model typically achieves the best accuracy in all tasks and use cases. In this work, we address the challenge of selecting the best LLM out of a collection of models for new tasks. We propose a new formulation for the problem, in which benchmark datasets are repurposed to learn a "router" model for this LLM selection, and we show that this problem can be reduced to a collection of binary classification tasks. We demonstrate the utility and limitations of learning model routers from various benchmark datasets, where we consistently improve performance upon using any single model for all tasks.

This work presents a hierarchical framework for bipedal locomotion that combines a Reinforcement Learning (RL)-based high-level (HL) planner policy for the online generation of task space commands with a model-based low-level (LL) controller to track the desired task space trajectories. Different from traditional end-to-end learning approaches, our HL policy takes insights from the angular momentum-based linear inverted pendulum (ALIP) to carefully design the observation and action spaces of the Markov Decision Process (MDP). This simple yet effective design creates an insightful mapping between a low-dimensional state that effectively captures the complex dynamics of bipedal locomotion and a set of task space outputs that shape the walking gait of the robot. The HL policy is agnostic to the task space LL controller, which increases the flexibility of the design and generalization of the framework to other bipedal robots. This hierarchical design results in a learning-based framework with improved performance, data efficiency, and robustness compared with the ALIP model-based approach and state-of-the-art learning-based frameworks for bipedal locomotion. The proposed hierarchical controller is tested in three different robots, Rabbit, a five-link underactuated planar biped; Walker2D, a seven-link fully-actuated planar biped; and Digit, a 3D humanoid robot with 20 actuated joints. The trained policy naturally learns human-like locomotion behaviors and is able to effectively track a wide range of walking speeds while preserving the robustness and stability of the walking gait even under adversarial conditions.

Since the origins of the Internet, various vulnerabilities exploiting the IP fragmentation process have plagued IPv4 protocol, many leading to a wide range of attacks. IPv6 modified the handling of fragmentations and introduced a specific extension header, not solving the related problems, as proved by extensive literature. One of the primary sources of problems has been the overlapping fragments, which result in unexpected or malicious packets when reassembled. To overcome the problem related to fragmentation, the authors of RFC 5722 decided that IPv6 hosts MUST silently drop overlapping fragments. Since then, several studies have proposed methodologies to check if IPv6 hosts accept overlapping fragments and are still vulnerable to related attacks. However, some of the above methodologies have not been proven complete or need to be more accurate. In this paper we propose a novel model to check IPv6 fragmentation handling specifically suited for the reassembling strategies of modern operating systems. Previous models, indeed, considered OS reassembly policy as byte-based. However, nowadays, reassembly policies are fragment-based, making previous models inadequate. Our model leverages the commutative property of the checksum, simplifying the whole assessing process. Starting with this new model, we were able to better evaluate the RFC-5722 and RFC-9099 compliance of modern operating systems against fragmentation handling. Our results suggest that IPv6 fragmentation can still be considered a threat and that more effort is needed to solve related security issues.

Current unsupervised 2D-3D human pose estimation (HPE) methods do not work in multi-person scenarios due to perspective ambiguity in monocular images. Therefore, we present one of the first studies investigating the feasibility of unsupervised multi-person 2D-3D HPE from just 2D poses alone, focusing on reconstructing human interactions. To address the issue of perspective ambiguity, we expand upon prior work by predicting the cameras' elevation angle relative to the subjects' pelvis. This allows us to rotate the predicted poses to be level with the ground plane, while obtaining an estimate for the vertical offset in 3D between individuals. Our method involves independently lifting each subject's 2D pose to 3D, before combining them in a shared 3D coordinate system. The poses are then rotated and offset by the predicted elevation angle before being scaled. This by itself enables us to retrieve an accurate 3D reconstruction of their poses. We present our results on the CHI3D dataset, introducing its use for unsupervised 2D-3D pose estimation with three new quantitative metrics, and establishing a benchmark for future research.

The Collaborative Research Cycle (CRC) is a National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) benchmarking program intended to strengthen understanding of tabular data deidentification technologies. Deidentification algorithms are vulnerable to the same bias and privacy issues that impact other data analytics and machine learning applications, and can even amplify those issues by contaminating downstream applications. This paper summarizes four CRC contributions: theoretical work on the relationship between diverse populations and challenges for equitable deidentification; public benchmark data focused on diverse populations and challenging features; a comprehensive open source suite of evaluation metrology for deidentified datasets; and an archive of more than 450 deidentified data samples from a broad range of techniques. The initial set of evaluation results demonstrate the value of these tools for investigations in this field.

Currently, existing efforts in Weakly Supervised Semantic Segmentation (WSSS) based on Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have predominantly focused on enhancing the multi-label classification network stage, with limited attention given to the equally important downstream segmentation network. Furthermore, CNN-based local convolutions lack the ability to model the extensive inter-category dependencies. Therefore, this paper introduces a graph reasoning-based approach to enhance WSSS. The aim is to improve WSSS holistically by simultaneously enhancing both the multi-label classification and segmentation network stages. In the multi-label classification network segment, external knowledge is integrated, coupled with GCNs, to globally reason about inter-class dependencies. This encourages the network to uncover features in non-salient regions of images, thereby refining the completeness of generated pseudo-labels. In the segmentation network segment, the proposed Graph Reasoning Mapping (GRM) module is employed to leverage knowledge obtained from textual databases, facilitating contextual reasoning for class representation within image regions. This GRM module enhances feature representation in high-level semantics of the segmentation network's local convolutions, while dynamically learning semantic coherence for individual samples. Using solely image-level supervision, we have achieved state-of-the-art performance in WSSS on the PASCAL VOC 2012 and MS-COCO datasets. Extensive experimentation on both the multi-label classification and segmentation network stages underscores the effectiveness of the proposed graph reasoning approach for advancing WSSS.

Spiking neural networks (SNNs) are receiving increased attention as a means to develop "biologically plausible" machine learning models. These networks mimic synaptic connections in the human brain and produce spike trains, which can be approximated by binary values, precluding high computational cost with floating-point arithmetic circuits. Recently, the addition of convolutional layers to combine the feature extraction power of convolutional networks with the computational efficiency of SNNs has been introduced. In this paper, the feasibility of using a convolutional spiking neural network (CSNN) as a classifier to detect anticipatory slow cortical potentials related to braking intention in human participants using an electroencephalogram (EEG) was studied. The EEG data was collected during an experiment wherein participants operated a remote controlled vehicle on a testbed designed to simulate an urban environment. Participants were alerted to an incoming braking event via an audio countdown to elicit anticipatory potentials that were then measured using an EEG. The CSNN's performance was compared to a standard convolutional neural network (CNN) and three graph neural networks (GNNs) via 10-fold cross-validation. The results showed that the CSNN outperformed the other neural networks.

Open data is frequently released spatially and temporally aggregated, usually to comply with privacy policies. Varying aggregation levels (e.g., zip code, census tract, city block) complicate the integration across variables needed to provide multi-variate training sets for downstream AI/ML systems. In this work, we consider models to disaggregate spatial data, learning a function from a low-resolution irregular partition (e.g., zip code) to s high-resolution irregular partition (e.g., city block). We propose a hierarchical architecture that aligns each geographic aggregation level with a layer in the network such that all aggregation levels can be learned simultaneously by including loss terms for all intermediate levels as well as the final output. We then consider additional loss terms that compare the re-aggregated output against ground truth to further improve performance. To balance the tradeoff between training time and accuracy, we consider three training regimes, including a layer-by-layer process that achieves competitive predictions with significantly reduced training time. For situations where limited historical training data is available, we study transfer learning scenarios and show that a model pre-trained on one city variable can be fine-tuned for another city variable using only a few hundred samples, highlighting the common dynamics among variables from the same built environment and underlying population. Evaluating these techniques on four datasets across two cities, three variables, and two application domains, we find that geographically coherent architectures provide a significant improvement over baseline models as well as typical heuristic methods, advancing our long-term goal of synthesizing any variable, at any location, at any resolution.

This work aims to provide an engagement decision support tool for Beyond Visual Range (BVR) air combat in the context of Defensive Counter Air (DCA) missions. In BVR air combat, engagement decision refers to the choice of the moment the pilot engages a target by assuming an offensive stance and executing corresponding maneuvers. To model this decision, we use the Brazilian Air Force's Aerospace Simulation Environment (\textit{Ambiente de Simula\c{c}\~ao Aeroespacial - ASA} in Portuguese), which generated 3,729 constructive simulations lasting 12 minutes each and a total of 10,316 engagements. We analyzed all samples by an operational metric called the DCA index, which represents, based on the experience of subject matter experts, the degree of success in this type of mission. This metric considers the distances of the aircraft of the same team and the opposite team, the point of Combat Air Patrol, and the number of missiles used. By defining the engagement status right before it starts and the average of the DCA index throughout the engagement, we create a supervised learning model to determine the quality of a new engagement. An algorithm based on decision trees, working with the XGBoost library, provides a regression model to predict the DCA index with a coefficient of determination close to 0.8 and a Root Mean Square Error of 0.05 that can furnish parameters to the BVR pilot to decide whether or not to engage. Thus, using data obtained through simulations, this work contributes by building a decision support system based on machine learning for BVR air combat.

Graph neural networks (GNNs) is widely used to learn a powerful representation of graph-structured data. Recent work demonstrates that transferring knowledge from self-supervised tasks to downstream tasks could further improve graph representation. However, there is an inherent gap between self-supervised tasks and downstream tasks in terms of optimization objective and training data. Conventional pre-training methods may be not effective enough on knowledge transfer since they do not make any adaptation for downstream tasks. To solve such problems, we propose a new transfer learning paradigm on GNNs which could effectively leverage self-supervised tasks as auxiliary tasks to help the target task. Our methods would adaptively select and combine different auxiliary tasks with the target task in the fine-tuning stage. We design an adaptive auxiliary loss weighting model to learn the weights of auxiliary tasks by quantifying the consistency between auxiliary tasks and the target task. In addition, we learn the weighting model through meta-learning. Our methods can be applied to various transfer learning approaches, it performs well not only in multi-task learning but also in pre-training and fine-tuning. Comprehensive experiments on multiple downstream tasks demonstrate that the proposed methods can effectively combine auxiliary tasks with the target task and significantly improve the performance compared to state-of-the-art methods.
