Deepfake videos and images are becoming increasingly credible, posing a significant threat given their potential to facilitate fraud or bypass access control systems. This has motivated the development of deepfake detection methods, in which deep learning models are trained to distinguish between real and synthesized footage. Unfortunately, existing detection models struggle to generalize to deepfakes from datasets they were not trained on, but little work has been done to examine why or how this limitation can be addressed. In this paper, we present the first empirical study on the generalizability of deepfake detectors, an essential goal for detectors to stay one step ahead of attackers. Our study utilizes six deepfake datasets, five deepfake detection methods, and two model augmentation approaches, confirming that detectors do not generalize in zero-shot settings. Additionally, we find that detectors are learning unwanted properties specific to synthesis methods and struggling to extract discriminative features, limiting their ability to generalize. Finally, we find that there are neurons universally contributing to detection across seen and unseen datasets, illuminating a possible path forward to zero-shot generalizability.

We aim to address a significant but understudied problem in the anime industry, namely the inbetweening of cartoon line drawings. Inbetweening involves generating intermediate frames between two black-and-white line drawings and is a time-consuming and expensive process that can benefit from automation. However, existing frame interpolation methods that rely on matching and warping whole raster images are unsuitable for line inbetweening and often produce blurring artifacts that damage the intricate line structures. To preserve the precision and detail of the line drawings, we propose a new approach, AnimeInbet, which geometrizes raster line drawings into graphs of endpoints and reframes the inbetweening task as a graph fusion problem with vertex repositioning. Our method can effectively capture the sparsity and unique structure of line drawings while preserving the details during inbetweening. This is made possible via our novel modules, i.e., vertex geometric embedding, a vertex correspondence Transformer, an effective mechanism for vertex repositioning and a visibility predictor. To train our method, we introduce MixamoLine240, a new dataset of line drawings with ground truth vectorization and matching labels. Our experiments demonstrate that AnimeInbet synthesizes high-quality, clean, and complete intermediate line drawings, outperforming existing methods quantitatively and qualitatively, especially in cases with large motions. High-quality face images are required to guarantee the stability and reliability of automatic face recognition (FR) systems in surveillance and security scenarios. However, a massive amount of face data is usually compressed before being analyzed due to limitations on transmission or storage. The compressed images may lose the powerful identity information, resulting in the performance degradation of the FR system. Herein, we make the first attempt to study just noticeable difference (JND) for the FR system, which can be defined as the maximum distortion that the FR system cannot notice. More specifically, we establish a JND dataset including 3530 original images and 137,670 compressed images generated by advanced reference encoding/decoding software based on the Versatile Video Coding (VVC) standard (VTM-15.0). Subsequently, we develop a novel JND prediction model to directly infer JND images for the FR system. In particular, in order to maximum redundancy removal without impairment of robust identity information, we apply the encoder with multiple feature extraction and attention-based feature decomposition modules to progressively decompose face features into two uncorrelated components, i.e., identity and residual features, via self-supervised learning. Then, the residual feature is fed into the decoder to generate the residual map. Finally, the predicted JND map is obtained by subtracting the residual map from the original image. Experimental results have demonstrated that the proposed model achieves higher accuracy of JND map prediction compared with the state-of-the-art JND models, and is capable of saving more bits while maintaining the performance of the FR system compared with VTM-15.0.

Speaker diarization is well studied for constrained audios but little explored for challenging in-the-wild videos, which have more speakers, shorter utterances, and inconsistent on-screen speakers. We address this gap by proposing an audio-visual diarization model which combines audio-only and visual-centric sub-systems via late fusion. For audio, we show that an attractor-based end-to-end system (EEND-EDA) performs remarkably well when trained with our proposed recipe of a simulated proxy dataset, and propose an improved version, EEND-EDA++, that uses attention in decoding and a speaker recognition loss during training to better handle the larger number of speakers. The visual-centric sub-system leverages facial attributes and lip-audio synchrony for identity and speech activity estimation of on-screen speakers. Both sub-systems surpass the state of the art (SOTA) by a large margin, with the fused audio-visual system achieving a new SOTA on the AVA-AVD benchmark.

Micro-videos have recently gained immense popularity, sparking critical research in micro-video recommendation with significant implications for the entertainment, advertising, and e-commerce industries. However, the lack of large-scale public micro-video datasets poses a major challenge for developing effective recommender systems. To address this challenge, we introduce a very large micro-video recommendation dataset, named "MicroLens", consisting of one billion user-item interaction behaviors, 34 million users, and one million micro-videos. This dataset also contains various raw modality information about videos, including titles, cover images, audio, and full-length videos. MicroLens serves as a benchmark for content-driven micro-video recommendation, enabling researchers to utilize various modalities of video information for recommendation, rather than relying solely on item IDs or off-the-shelf video features extracted from a pre-trained network. Our benchmarking of multiple recommender models and video encoders on MicroLens has yielded valuable insights into the performance of micro-video recommendation. We believe that this dataset will not only benefit the recommender system community but also promote the development of the video understanding field. Since photorealistic faces can be readily generated by facial manipulation technologies nowadays, potential malicious abuse of these technologies has drawn great concerns. Numerous deepfake detection methods are thus proposed. However, existing methods only focus on detecting one-step facial manipulation. As the emergence of easy-accessible facial editing applications, people can easily manipulate facial components using multi-step operations in a sequential manner. This new threat requires us to detect a sequence of facial manipulations, which is vital for both detecting deepfake media and recovering original faces afterwards. Motivated by this observation, we emphasize the need and propose a novel research problem called Detecting Sequential DeepFake Manipulation (Seq-DeepFake). Unlike the existing deepfake detection task only demanding a binary label prediction, detecting Seq-DeepFake manipulation requires correctly predicting a sequential vector of facial manipulation operations. To support a large-scale investigation, we construct the first Seq-DeepFake dataset, where face images are manipulated sequentially with corresponding annotations of sequential facial manipulation vectors. Based on this new dataset, we cast detecting Seq-DeepFake manipulation as a specific image-to-sequence task and propose a concise yet effective Seq-DeepFake Transformer (SeqFakeFormer). To better reflect real-world deepfake data distributions, we further apply various perturbations on the original Seq-DeepFake dataset and construct the more challenging Sequential DeepFake dataset with perturbations (Seq-DeepFake-P). To exploit deeper correlation between images and sequences when facing Seq-DeepFake-P, a dedicated Seq-DeepFake Transformer with Image-Sequence Reasoning (SeqFakeFormer++) is devised, which builds stronger correspondence between image-sequence pairs for more robust Seq-DeepFake detection.

Kinship recognition aims to determine whether the subjects in two facial images are kin or non-kin, which is an emerging and challenging problem. However, most previous methods focus on heuristic designs without considering the spatial correlation between face images. In this paper, we aim to learn discriminative kinship representations embedded with the relation information between face components (e.g., eyes, nose, etc.). To achieve this goal, we propose the Face Componential Relation Network, which learns the relationship between face components among images with a cross-attention mechanism, which automatically learns the important facial regions for kinship recognition. Moreover, we propose Face Componential Relation Network (FaCoRNet), which adapts the loss function by the guidance from cross-attention to learn more discriminative feature representations. The proposed FaCoRNet outperforms previous state-of-the-art methods by large margins for the largest public kinship recognition FIW benchmark.

This paper presents an innovative approach to achieve face cartoonisation while preserving the original identity and accommodating various poses. Unlike previous methods in this field that relied on conditional-GANs, which posed challenges related to dataset requirements and pose training, our approach leverages the expressive latent space of StyleGAN. We achieve this by introducing an encoder that captures both pose and identity information from images and generates a corresponding embedding within the StyleGAN latent space. By subsequently passing this embedding through a pre-trained generator, we obtain the desired cartoonised output. While many other approaches based on StyleGAN necessitate a dedicated and fine-tuned StyleGAN model, our method stands out by utilizing an already-trained StyleGAN designed to produce realistic facial images. We show by extensive experimentation how our encoder adapts the StyleGAN output to better preserve identity when the objective is cartoonisation.

Deep learning has revolutionized many machine learning tasks in recent years, ranging from image classification and video processing to speech recognition and natural language understanding. The data in these tasks are typically represented in the Euclidean space. However, there is an increasing number of applications where data are generated from non-Euclidean domains and are represented as graphs with complex relationships and interdependency between objects. The complexity of graph data has imposed significant challenges on existing machine learning algorithms. Recently, many studies on extending deep learning approaches for graph data have emerged. In this survey, we provide a comprehensive overview of graph neural networks (GNNs) in data mining and machine learning fields. We propose a new taxonomy to divide the state-of-the-art graph neural networks into different categories. With a focus on graph convolutional networks, we review alternative architectures that have recently been developed; these learning paradigms include graph attention networks, graph autoencoders, graph generative networks, and graph spatial-temporal networks. We further discuss the applications of graph neural networks across various domains and summarize the open source codes and benchmarks of the existing algorithms on different learning tasks. Finally, we propose potential research directions in this fast-growing field.

Video captioning is the task of automatically generating a textual description of the actions in a video. Although previous work (e.g. sequence-to-sequence model) has shown promising results in abstracting a coarse description of a short video, it is still very challenging to caption a video containing multiple fine-grained actions with a detailed description. This paper aims to address the challenge by proposing a novel hierarchical reinforcement learning framework for video captioning, where a high-level Manager module learns to design sub-goals and a low-level Worker module recognizes the primitive actions to fulfill the sub-goal. With this compositional framework to reinforce video captioning at different levels, our approach significantly outperforms all the baseline methods on a newly introduced large-scale dataset for fine-grained video captioning. Furthermore, our non-ensemble model has already achieved the state-of-the-art results on the widely-used MSR-VTT dataset.
