Training an effective video action recognition model poses significant computational challenges, particularly under limited resource budgets. Current methods primarily aim to either reduce model size or utilize pre-trained models, limiting their adaptability to various backbone architectures. This paper investigates the issue of over-sampled frames, a prevalent problem in many approaches yet it has received relatively little attention. Despite the use of fewer frames being a potential solution, this approach often results in a substantial decline in performance. To address this issue, we propose a novel method to restore the intermediate features for two sparsely sampled and adjacent video frames. This feature restoration technique brings a negligible increase in computational requirements compared to resource-intensive image encoders, such as ViT. To evaluate the effectiveness of our method, we conduct extensive experiments on four public datasets, including Kinetics-400, ActivityNet, UCF-101, and HMDB-51. With the integration of our method, the efficiency of three commonly used baselines has been improved by over 50%, with a mere 0.5% reduction in recognition accuracy. In addition, our method also surprisingly helps improve the generalization ability of the models under zero-shot settings.

The rapidly evolving nature of Android apps poses a significant challenge to static batch machine learning algorithms employed in malware detection systems, as they quickly become obsolete. Despite this challenge, the existing literature pays limited attention to addressing this issue, with many advanced Android malware detection approaches, such as Drebin, DroidDet and MaMaDroid, relying on static models. In this work, we show how retraining techniques are able to maintain detector capabilities over time. Particularly, we analyze the effect of two aspects in the efficiency and performance of the detectors: 1) the frequency with which the models are retrained, and 2) the data used for retraining. In the first experiment, we compare periodic retraining with a more advanced concept drift detection method that triggers retraining only when necessary. In the second experiment, we analyze sampling methods to reduce the amount of data used to retrain models. Specifically, we compare fixed sized windows of recent data and state-of-the-art active learning methods that select those apps that help keep the training dataset small but diverse. Our experiments show that concept drift detection and sample selection mechanisms result in very efficient retraining strategies which can be successfully used to maintain the performance of the static Android malware state-of-the-art detectors in changing environments.

Few-shot video action recognition is an effective approach to recognizing new categories with only a few labeled examples, thereby reducing the challenges associated with collecting and annotating large-scale video datasets. Existing methods in video action recognition rely on large labeled datasets from the same domain. However, this setup is not realistic as novel categories may come from different data domains that may have different spatial and temporal characteristics. This dissimilarity between the source and target domains can pose a significant challenge, rendering traditional few-shot action recognition techniques ineffective. To address this issue, in this work, we propose a novel cross-domain few-shot video action recognition method that leverages self-supervised learning and curriculum learning to balance the information from the source and target domains. To be particular, our method employs a masked autoencoder-based self-supervised training objective to learn from both source and target data in a self-supervised manner. Then a progressive curriculum balances learning the discriminative information from the source dataset with the generic information learned from the target domain. Initially, our curriculum utilizes supervised learning to learn class discriminative features from the source data. As the training progresses, we transition to learning target-domain-specific features. We propose a progressive curriculum to encourage the emergence of rich features in the target domain based on class discriminative supervised features in the source domain. We evaluate our method on several challenging benchmark datasets and demonstrate that our approach outperforms existing cross-domain few-shot learning techniques. The rapid progress of deep speech synthesis models has posed significant threats to society such as malicious content manipulation. Therefore, many studies have emerged to detect the so-called deepfake audio. However, existing works focus on the binary detection of real audio and fake audio. In real-world scenarios such as model copyright protection and digital evidence forensics, it is needed to know what tool or model generated the deepfake audio to explain the decision. This motivates us to ask: Can we recognize the system fingerprints of deepfake audio? In this paper, we present the first deepfake audio dataset for system fingerprint recognition (SFR) and conduct an initial investigation. We collected the dataset from the speech synthesis systems of seven Chinese vendors that use the latest state-of-the-art deep learning technologies, including both clean and compressed sets. In addition, to facilitate the further development of system fingerprint recognition methods, we provide extensive benchmarks that can be compared and research findings. Oobleck enables resilient distributed training of large DNN models with guaranteed fault tolerance. It takes a planning-execution co-design approach, where it first generates a set of heterogeneous pipeline templates and instantiates at least $f+1$ logically equivalent pipeline replicas to tolerate any $f$ simultaneous failures. During execution, it relies on already-replicated model states across the replicas to provide fast recovery. Oobleck provably guarantees that some combination of the initially created pipeline templates can be used to cover all available resources after $f$ or fewer simultaneous failures, thereby avoiding resource idling at all times. Evaluation on large DNN models with billions of parameters shows that Oobleck provides consistently high throughput, and it outperforms state-of-the-art fault tolerance solutions like Bamboo and Varuna by up to $13.9x$.

Significant advances are being made in speech emotion recognition (SER) using deep learning models. Nonetheless, training SER systems remains challenging, requiring both time and costly resources. Like many other machine learning tasks, acquiring datasets for SER requires substantial data annotation efforts, including transcription and labeling. These annotation processes present challenges when attempting to scale up conventional SER systems. Recent developments in foundational models have had a tremendous impact, giving rise to applications such as ChatGPT. These models have enhanced human-computer interactions including bringing unique possibilities for streamlining data collection in fields like SER. In this research, we explore the use of foundational models to assist in automating SER from transcription and annotation to augmentation. Our study demonstrates that these models can generate transcriptions to enhance the performance of SER systems that rely solely on speech data. Furthermore, we note that annotating emotions from transcribed speech remains a challenging task. However, combining outputs from multiple LLMs enhances the quality of annotations. Lastly, our findings suggest the feasibility of augmenting existing speech emotion datasets by annotating unlabeled speech samples.

Recent advances in neural reconstruction using posed image sequences have made remarkable progress. However, due to the lack of depth information, existing volumetric-based techniques simply duplicate 2D image features of the object surface along the entire camera ray. We contend this duplication introduces noise in empty and occluded spaces, posing challenges for producing high-quality 3D geometry. Drawing inspiration from traditional multi-view stereo methods, we propose an end-to-end 3D neural reconstruction framework CVRecon, designed to exploit the rich geometric embedding in the cost volumes to facilitate 3D geometric feature learning. Furthermore, we present Ray-contextual Compensated Cost Volume (RCCV), a novel 3D geometric feature representation that encodes view-dependent information with improved integrity and robustness. Through comprehensive experiments, we demonstrate that our approach significantly improves the reconstruction quality in various metrics and recovers clear fine details of the 3D geometries. LiDAR semantic segmentation plays a crucial role in enabling autonomous driving and robots to understand their surroundings accurately and robustly. There are different types of methods, such as point-based, range image-based, and polar-based. Among these, range image-based methods are widely used due to their balance between accuracy and speed. However, they face a significant challenge known as the ``many-to-one'' problem caused by the range image's limited horizontal and vertical angular resolution, where around 20% of the 3D points are occluded during model inference based on our observation. In this paper, we present TFNet, a range image-based LiDAR semantic segmentation method that utilizes temporal information to address this issue. Specifically, we incorporate a temporal fusion layer to extract useful information from previous scans and integrate it with the current scan. We then design a max-voting-based post-processing technique to correct false predictions, particularly those caused by the ``many-to-one'' issue. Experiments on two benchmarks and seven backbones of three modalities demonstrate the effectiveness and scalability of our proposed method.

Adversarial robustness, which primarily comprises sensitivity-based robustness and spatial robustness, plays an integral part in achieving robust generalization. In this paper, we endeavor to design strategies to achieve universal adversarial robustness. To achieve this, we first investigate the relatively less-explored realm of spatial robustness. Then, we integrate the existing spatial robustness methods by incorporating both local and global spatial vulnerability into a unified spatial attack and adversarial training approach. Furthermore, we present a comprehensive relationship between natural accuracy, sensitivity-based robustness, and spatial robustness, supported by strong evidence from the perspective of robust representation. Crucially, to reconcile the interplay between the mutual impacts of various robustness components into one unified framework, we incorporate the \textit{Pareto criterion} into the adversarial robustness analysis, yielding a novel strategy called Pareto Adversarial Training for achieving universal robustness. The resulting Pareto front, which delineates the set of optimal solutions, provides an optimal balance between natural accuracy and various adversarial robustness. This sheds light on solutions for achieving universal robustness in the future. To the best of our knowledge, we are the first to consider universal adversarial robustness via multi-objective optimization.

Large pre-trained vision-language models such as CLIP have demonstrated great potential in zero-shot transferability to downstream tasks. However, to attain optimal performance, the manual selection of prompts is necessary to improve alignment between the downstream image distribution and the textual class descriptions. This manual prompt engineering is the major challenge for deploying such models in practice since it requires domain expertise and is extremely time-consuming. To avoid non-trivial prompt engineering, recent work Context Optimization (CoOp) introduced the concept of prompt learning to the vision domain using learnable textual tokens. While CoOp can achieve substantial improvements over manual prompts, its learned context is worse generalizable to wider unseen classes within the same dataset. In this work, we present Prompt Learning with Reparameterization Encoder (PRE) - a simple and efficient method that enhances the generalization ability of the learnable prompt to unseen classes while maintaining the capacity to learn Base classes. Instead of directly optimizing the prompts, PRE employs a prompt encoder to reparameterize the input prompt embeddings, enhancing the exploration of task-specific knowledge from few-shot samples. Experiments and extensive ablation studies on 8 benchmarks demonstrate that our approach is an efficient method for prompt learning. Specifically, PRE achieves a notable enhancement of 5.60% in average accuracy on New classes and 3% in Harmonic mean compared to CoOp in the 16-shot setting, all achieved within a good training time.

Images can convey rich semantics and induce various emotions in viewers. Recently, with the rapid advancement of emotional intelligence and the explosive growth of visual data, extensive research efforts have been dedicated to affective image content analysis (AICA). In this survey, we will comprehensively review the development of AICA in the recent two decades, especially focusing on the state-of-the-art methods with respect to three main challenges -- the affective gap, perception subjectivity, and label noise and absence. We begin with an introduction to the key emotion representation models that have been widely employed in AICA and description of available datasets for performing evaluation with quantitative comparison of label noise and dataset bias. We then summarize and compare the representative approaches on (1) emotion feature extraction, including both handcrafted and deep features, (2) learning methods on dominant emotion recognition, personalized emotion prediction, emotion distribution learning, and learning from noisy data or few labels, and (3) AICA based applications. Finally, we discuss some challenges and promising research directions in the future, such as image content and context understanding, group emotion clustering, and viewer-image interaction.
