Zero-shot instance segmentation aims to detect and precisely segment objects of unseen categories without any training samples. Since the model is trained on seen categories, there is a strong bias that the model tends to classify all the objects into seen categories. Besides, there is a natural confusion between background and novel objects that have never shown up in training. These two challenges make novel objects hard to be raised in the final instance segmentation results. It is desired to rescue novel objects from background and dominated seen categories. To this end, we propose D$^2$Zero with Semantic-Promoted Debiasing and Background Disambiguation to enhance the performance of Zero-shot instance segmentation. Semantic-promoted debiasing utilizes inter-class semantic relationships to involve unseen categories in visual feature training and learns an input-conditional classifier to conduct dynamical classification based on the input image. Background disambiguation produces image-adaptive background representation to avoid mistaking novel objects for background. Extensive experiments show that we significantly outperform previous state-of-the-art methods by a large margin, e.g., 16.86% improvement on COCO. Project page: //henghuiding.github.io/D2Zero/
Passive millimeter-wave (PMMW) is a significant potential technique for human security screening. Several popular object detection networks have been used for PMMW images. However, restricted by the low resolution and high noise of PMMW images, PMMW hidden object detection based on deep learning usually suffers from low accuracy and low classification confidence. To tackle the above problems, this paper proposes a Task-Aligned Detection Transformer network, named PMMW-DETR. In the first stage, a Denoising Coarse-to-Fine Transformer (DCFT) backbone is designed to extract long- and short-range features in the different scales. In the second stage, we propose the Query Selection module to introduce learned spatial features into the network as prior knowledge, which enhances the semantic perception capability of the network. In the third stage, aiming to improve the classification performance, we perform a Task-Aligned Dual-Head block to decouple the classification and regression tasks. Based on our self-developed PMMW security screening dataset, experimental results including comparison with State-Of-The-Art (SOTA) methods and ablation study demonstrate that the PMMW-DETR obtains higher accuracy and classification confidence than previous works, and exhibits robustness to the PMMW images of low quality.
Zero-Shot Learning (ZSL) focuses on classifying samples of unseen classes with only their side semantic information presented during training. It cannot handle real-life, open-world scenarios where there are test samples of unknown classes for which neither samples (e.g., images) nor their side semantic information is known during training. Open-Set Recognition (OSR) is dedicated to addressing the unknown class issue, but existing OSR methods are not designed to model the semantic information of the unseen classes. To tackle this combined ZSL and OSR problem, we consider the case of "Zero-Shot Open-Set Recognition" (ZS-OSR), where a model is trained under the ZSL setting but it is required to accurately classify samples from the unseen classes while being able to reject samples from the unknown classes during inference. We perform large experiments on combining existing state-of-the-art ZSL and OSR models for the ZS-OSR task on four widely used datasets adapted from the ZSL task, and reveal that ZS-OSR is a non-trivial task as the simply combined solutions perform badly in distinguishing the unseen-class and unknown-class samples. We further introduce a novel approach specifically designed for ZS-OSR, in which our model learns to generate adversarial semantic embeddings of the unknown classes to train an unknowns-informed ZS-OSR classifier. Extensive empirical results show that our method 1) substantially outperforms the combined solutions in detecting the unknown classes while retaining the classification accuracy on the unseen classes and 2) achieves similar superiority under generalized ZS-OSR settings.
With the rapid development of online social media platforms, the spread of rumours has become a critical societal concern. Current methods for rumour detection can be categorized into image-text pair classification and source-reply graph classification. In this paper, we propose a novel approach that combines multimodal source and propagation graph features for rumour classification. We introduce the Unified Multimodal Graph Transformer Network (UMGTN) which integrates Transformer encoders to fuse these features. Given that not every message in social media is associated with an image and community responses in propagation graphs do not immediately follow source messages, our aim is to build a network architecture that handles missing features such as images or replies. To enhance the model's robustness to data with missing features, we adopt a multitask learning framework that simultaneously learns representations between samples with complete and missing features. We evaluate our proposed method on four real-world datasets, augmenting them by recovering images and replies from Twitter and Weibo. Experimental results demonstrate that our UMGTN with multitask learning achieves state-of-the-art performance, improving F1-score by 1.0% to 4.0%, while maintaining detection robustness to missing features within 2% accuracy and F1-score compared to models trained without the multitask learning framework. Limited by imaging systems, the reconstruction of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) images from partial measurement is essential to medical imaging research. Benefiting from the diverse and complementary information of multi-contrast MR images in different imaging modalities, multi-contrast Super-Resolution (SR) reconstruction is promising to yield SR images with higher quality. In the medical scenario, to fully visualize the lesion, radiologists are accustomed to zooming the MR images at arbitrary scales rather than using a fixed scale, as used by most MRI SR methods. In addition, existing multi-contrast MRI SR methods often require a fixed resolution for the reference image, which makes acquiring reference images difficult and imposes limitations on arbitrary scale SR tasks. To address these issues, we proposed an implicit neural representations based dual-arbitrary multi-contrast MRI super-resolution method, called Dual-ArbNet. First, we decouple the resolution of the target and reference images by a feature encoder, enabling the network to input target and reference images at arbitrary scales. Then, an implicit fusion decoder fuses the multi-contrast features and uses an Implicit Decoding Function~(IDF) to obtain the final MRI SR results. Furthermore, we introduce a curriculum learning strategy to train our network, which improves the generalization and performance of our Dual-ArbNet. Extensive experiments in two public MRI datasets demonstrate that our method outperforms state-of-the-art approaches under different scale factors and has great potential in clinical practice.
In semantic segmentation, adapting a visual system to novel object categories at inference time has always been both valuable and challenging. To enable such generalization, existing methods rely on either providing several support examples as visual cues or class names as textual cues. Through the development is relatively optimistic, these two lines have been studied in isolation, neglecting the complementary intrinsic of low-level visual and high-level language information. In this paper, we define a unified setting termed as open-set semantic segmentation (O3S), which aims to learn seen and unseen semantics from both visual examples and textual names. Our pipeline extracts multi-modal prototypes for segmentation task, by first single modal self-enhancement and aggregation, then multi-modal complementary fusion. To be specific, we aggregate visual features into several tokens as visual prototypes, and enhance the class name with detailed descriptions for textual prototype generation. The two modalities are then fused to generate multi-modal prototypes for final segmentation. On both \pascal and \coco datasets, we conduct extensive experiments to evaluate the framework effectiveness. State-of-the-art results are achieved even on more detailed part-segmentation, Pascal-Animals, by only training on coarse-grained datasets. Thorough ablation studies are performed to dissect each component, both quantitatively and qualitatively.
Upon the advent of the emerging metaverse and its related applications in Augmented Reality (AR), the current bit-oriented network struggles to support real-time changes for the vast amount of associated information, hindering its development. Thus, a critical revolution in the Sixth Generation (6G) networks is envisioned through the joint exploitation of information context and its importance to the task, leading to a communication paradigm shift towards semantic and effectiveness levels. However, current research has not yet proposed any explicit and systematic communication framework for AR applications that incorporate these two levels. To fill this research gap, this paper presents a task-oriented and semantics-aware communication framework for augmented reality (TSAR) to enhance communication efficiency and effectiveness in 6G. Specifically, we first analyse the traditional wireless AR point cloud communication framework and then summarize our proposed semantic information along with the end-to-end wireless communication. We then detail the design blocks of the TSAR framework, covering both semantic and effectiveness levels. Finally, numerous experiments have been conducted to demonstrate that, compared to the traditional point cloud communication framework, our proposed TSAR significantly reduces wireless AR application transmission latency by 95.6%, while improving communication effectiveness in geometry and color aspects by up to 82.4% and 20.4%, respectively.
Partially-supervised instance segmentation is a task which requests segmenting objects from novel unseen categories via learning on limited seen categories with annotated masks thus eliminating demands of heavy annotation burden. The key to addressing this task is to build an effective class-agnostic mask segmentation model. Unlike previous methods that learn such models only on seen categories, in this paper, we propose a new method, named ContrastMask, which learns a mask segmentation model on both seen and unseen categories under a unified pixel-level contrastive learning framework. In this framework, annotated masks of seen categories and pseudo masks of unseen categories serve as a prior for contrastive learning, where features from the mask regions (foreground) are pulled together, and are contrasted against those from the background, and vice versa. Through this framework, feature discrimination between foreground and background is largely improved, facilitating learning of the class-agnostic mask segmentation model. Exhaustive experiments on the COCO dataset demonstrate the superiority of our method, which outperforms previous state-of-the-arts.
Image-level weakly supervised semantic segmentation (WSSS) is a fundamental yet challenging computer vision task facilitating scene understanding and automatic driving. Most existing methods resort to classification-based Class Activation Maps (CAMs) to play as the initial pseudo labels, which tend to focus on the discriminative image regions and lack customized characteristics for the segmentation task. To alleviate this issue, we propose a novel activation modulation and recalibration (AMR) scheme, which leverages a spotlight branch and a compensation branch to obtain weighted CAMs that can provide recalibration supervision and task-specific concepts. Specifically, an attention modulation module (AMM) is employed to rearrange the distribution of feature importance from the channel-spatial sequential perspective, which helps to explicitly model channel-wise interdependencies and spatial encodings to adaptively modulate segmentation-oriented activation responses. Furthermore, we introduce a cross pseudo supervision for dual branches, which can be regarded as a semantic similar regularization to mutually refine two branches. Extensive experiments show that AMR establishes a new state-of-the-art performance on the PASCAL VOC 2012 dataset, surpassing not only current methods trained with the image-level of supervision but also some methods relying on stronger supervision, such as saliency label. Experiments also reveal that our scheme is plug-and-play and can be incorporated with other approaches to boost their performance.
Object detection is considered as one of the most challenging problems in computer vision, since it requires correct prediction of both classes and locations of objects in images. In this study, we define a more difficult scenario, namely zero-shot object detection (ZSD) where no visual training data is available for some of the target object classes. We present a novel approach to tackle this ZSD problem, where a convex combination of embeddings are used in conjunction with a detection framework. For evaluation of ZSD methods, we propose a simple dataset constructed from Fashion-MNIST images and also a custom zero-shot split for the Pascal VOC detection challenge. The experimental results suggest that our method yields promising results for ZSD.
We consider the problem of zero-shot recognition: learning a visual classifier for a category with zero training examples, just using the word embedding of the category and its relationship to other categories, which visual data are provided. The key to dealing with the unfamiliar or novel category is to transfer knowledge obtained from familiar classes to describe the unfamiliar class. In this paper, we build upon the recently introduced Graph Convolutional Network (GCN) and propose an approach that uses both semantic embeddings and the categorical relationships to predict the classifiers. Given a learned knowledge graph (KG), our approach takes as input semantic embeddings for each node (representing visual category). After a series of graph convolutions, we predict the visual classifier for each category. During training, the visual classifiers for a few categories are given to learn the GCN parameters. At test time, these filters are used to predict the visual classifiers of unseen categories. We show that our approach is robust to noise in the KG. More importantly, our approach provides significant improvement in performance compared to the current state-of-the-art results (from 2 ~ 3% on some metrics to whopping 20% on a few).
