Research demonstrates learners engaging in the process of producing explanations to support their reasoning, can have a positive impact on learning. However, providing learners real-time explanatory feedback often presents challenges related to classification accuracy, particularly in domain-specific environments, containing situationally complex and nuanced responses. We present two approaches for supplying tutors real-time feedback within an online lesson on how to give students effective praise. This work-in-progress demonstrates considerable accuracy in binary classification for corrective feedback of effective, or effort-based (F1 score = 0.811), and ineffective, or outcome-based (F1 score = 0.350), praise responses. More notably, we introduce progress towards an enhanced approach of providing explanatory feedback using large language model-facilitated named entity recognition, which can provide tutors feedback, not only while engaging in lessons, but can potentially suggest real-time tutor moves. Future work involves leveraging large language models for data augmentation to improve accuracy, while also developing an explanatory feedback interface.

Semantic segmentation techniques have shown significant progress in recent years, but their robustness to real-world perturbations and data samples not seen during training remains a challenge, particularly in safety-critical applications. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to improve the robustness of semantic segmentation techniques by leveraging the synergy between label-to-image generators and image-to-label segmentation models. Specifically, we design and train Robusta, a novel robust conditional generative adversarial network to generate realistic and plausible perturbed or outlier images that can be used to train reliable segmentation models. We conduct in-depth studies of the proposed generative model, assess the performance and robustness of the downstream segmentation network, and demonstrate that our approach can significantly enhance the robustness of semantic segmentation techniques in the face of real-world perturbations, distribution shifts, and out-of-distribution samples. Our results suggest that this approach could be valuable in safety-critical applications, where the reliability of semantic segmentation techniques is of utmost importance and comes with a limited computational budget in inference. We will release our code shortly.

Speaker recognition is a widely used voice-based biometric technology with applications in various industries, including banking, education, recruitment, immigration, law enforcement, healthcare, and well-being. However, while dataset evaluations and audits have improved data practices in face recognition and other computer vision tasks, the data practices in speaker recognition have gone largely unquestioned. Our research aims to address this gap by exploring how dataset usage has evolved over time and what implications this has on bias, fairness and privacy in speaker recognition systems. Previous studies have demonstrated the presence of historical, representation, and measurement biases in popular speaker recognition benchmarks. In this paper, we present a longitudinal study of speaker recognition datasets used for training and evaluation from 2012 to 2021. We survey close to 700 papers to investigate community adoption of datasets and changes in usage over a crucial time period where speaker recognition approaches transitioned to the widespread adoption of deep neural networks. Our study identifies the most commonly used datasets in the field, examines their usage patterns, and assesses their attributes that affect bias, fairness, and other ethical concerns. Our findings suggest areas for further research on the ethics and fairness of speaker recognition technology.

Insightful interdisciplinary collaboration is essential to the principled governance of complex technologies, like those produced by modern computing research and development. Technical research on the interaction between computation and society often focuses on how researchers model social and physical systems. These models underlie how computer scientists specify problems and propose algorithmic solutions. However, the social effects of computing can depend just as much on obscure and opaque technical caveats, choices, and qualifiers. Such artifacts are products of the particular algorithmic techniques and theory applied to solve a problem once modeled, and their nature can imperil thorough sociotechnical scrutiny of the often discretionary decisions made to manage them. We describe three classes of objects used to encode these choices and qualifiers: heuristic models, assumptions, and parameters. We raise six reasons these objects may be hazardous to comprehensive analysis of computing and argue they deserve deliberate consideration as researchers explain scientific work.

We consider a Multi-Agent Path Finding (MAPF) setting where agents have been assigned a plan, but during its execution some agents are delayed. Instead of replanning from scratch when such a delay occurs, we propose delay introduction, whereby we delay some additional agents so that the remainder of the plan can be executed safely. We show that the corresponding decision problem is NP-Complete in general. However, in practice we can find optimal delay-introductions using CBS for very large numbers of agents, and both planning time and the resulting length of the plan are comparable, and sometimes outperform, the state-of-the-art heuristics for replanning.

Sequential transfer optimization (STO), which aims to improve the optimization performance on a task at hand by exploiting the knowledge captured from several previously-solved optimization tasks stored in a database, has been gaining increasing research attention over the years. However, despite remarkable advances in algorithm design, the development of a systematic benchmark suite for comprehensive comparisons of STO algorithms received far less attention. Existing test problems are either simply generated by assembling other benchmark functions or extended from specific practical problems with limited variations. The relationships between the optimal solutions of the source and target tasks in these problems are always manually configured, limiting their ability to model different relationships presented in real-world problems. Consequently, the good performance achieved by an algorithm on these problems might be biased and could not be generalized to other problems. In light of the above, in this study, we first introduce four rudimentary concepts for characterizing STO problems (STOPs) and present an important problem feature, namely similarity distribution, which quantitatively delineates the relationship between the optima of the source and target tasks. Then, we propose the general design guidelines and a problem generator with superior scalability. Specifically, the similarity distribution of an STOP can be easily customized, enabling a continuous spectrum of representation of the diverse similarity relationships of real-world problems. Lastly, a benchmark suite with 12 STOPs featured by a variety of customized similarity relationships is developed using the proposed generator, which would serve as an arena for STO algorithms and provide more comprehensive evaluation results. Face recognition technology has advanced significantly in recent years due largely to the availability of large and increasingly complex training datasets for use in deep learning models. These datasets, however, typically comprise images scraped from news sites or social media platforms and, therefore, have limited utility in more advanced security, forensics, and military applications. These applications require lower resolution, longer ranges, and elevated viewpoints. To meet these critical needs, we collected and curated the first and second subsets of a large multi-modal biometric dataset designed for use in the research and development (R&D) of biometric recognition technologies under extremely challenging conditions. Thus far, the dataset includes more than 350,000 still images and over 1,300 hours of video footage of approximately 1,000 subjects. To collect this data, we used Nikon DSLR cameras, a variety of commercial surveillance cameras, specialized long-rage R&D cameras, and Group 1 and Group 2 UAV platforms. The goal is to support the development of algorithms capable of accurately recognizing people at ranges up to 1,000 m and from high angles of elevation. These advances will include improvements to the state of the art in face recognition and will support new research in the area of whole-body recognition using methods based on gait and anthropometry. This paper describes methods used to collect and curate the dataset, and the dataset's characteristics at the current stage.

Advances in artificial intelligence often stem from the development of new environments that abstract real-world situations into a form where research can be done conveniently. This paper contributes such an environment based on ideas inspired by elementary Microeconomics. Agents learn to produce resources in a spatially complex world, trade them with one another, and consume those that they prefer. We show that the emergent production, consumption, and pricing behaviors respond to environmental conditions in the directions predicted by supply and demand shifts in Microeconomics. We also demonstrate settings where the agents' emergent prices for goods vary over space, reflecting the local abundance of goods. After the price disparities emerge, some agents then discover a niche of transporting goods between regions with different prevailing prices -- a profitable strategy because they can buy goods where they are cheap and sell them where they are expensive. Finally, in a series of ablation experiments, we investigate how choices in the environmental rewards, bartering actions, agent architecture, and ability to consume tradable goods can either aid or inhibit the emergence of this economic behavior. This work is part of the environment development branch of a research program that aims to build human-like artificial general intelligence through multi-agent interactions in simulated societies. By exploring which environment features are needed for the basic phenomena of elementary microeconomics to emerge automatically from learning, we arrive at an environment that differs from those studied in prior multi-agent reinforcement learning work along several dimensions. For example, the model incorporates heterogeneous tastes and physical abilities, and agents negotiate with one another as a grounded form of communication.

Causality can be described in terms of a structural causal model (SCM) that carries information on the variables of interest and their mechanistic relations. For most processes of interest the underlying SCM will only be partially observable, thus causal inference tries to leverage any exposed information. Graph neural networks (GNN) as universal approximators on structured input pose a viable candidate for causal learning, suggesting a tighter integration with SCM. To this effect we present a theoretical analysis from first principles that establishes a novel connection between GNN and SCM while providing an extended view on general neural-causal models. We then establish a new model class for GNN-based causal inference that is necessary and sufficient for causal effect identification. Our empirical illustration on simulations and standard benchmarks validate our theoretical proofs.

Multi-relation Question Answering is a challenging task, due to the requirement of elaborated analysis on questions and reasoning over multiple fact triples in knowledge base. In this paper, we present a novel model called Interpretable Reasoning Network that employs an interpretable, hop-by-hop reasoning process for question answering. The model dynamically decides which part of an input question should be analyzed at each hop; predicts a relation that corresponds to the current parsed results; utilizes the predicted relation to update the question representation and the state of the reasoning process; and then drives the next-hop reasoning. Experiments show that our model yields state-of-the-art results on two datasets. More interestingly, the model can offer traceable and observable intermediate predictions for reasoning analysis and failure diagnosis, thereby allowing manual manipulation in predicting the final answer.

Detecting carried objects is one of the requirements for developing systems to reason about activities involving people and objects. We present an approach to detect carried objects from a single video frame with a novel method that incorporates features from multiple scales. Initially, a foreground mask in a video frame is segmented into multi-scale superpixels. Then the human-like regions in the segmented area are identified by matching a set of extracted features from superpixels against learned features in a codebook. A carried object probability map is generated using the complement of the matching probabilities of superpixels to human-like regions and background information. A group of superpixels with high carried object probability and strong edge support is then merged to obtain the shape of the carried object. We applied our method to two challenging datasets, and results show that our method is competitive with or better than the state-of-the-art.
