Conversational AI systems exhibit a level of human-like behavior that promises to have profound impacts on many aspects of daily life -- how people access information, create content, and seek social support. Yet these models have also shown a propensity for biases, offensive language, and conveying false information. Consequently, understanding and moderating safety risks in these models is a critical technical and social challenge. Perception of safety is intrinsically subjective, where many factors -- often intersecting -- could determine why one person may consider a conversation with a chatbot safe and another person could consider the same conversation unsafe. In this work, we focus on demographic factors that could influence such diverse perceptions. To this end, we contribute an analysis using Bayesian multilevel modeling to explore the connection between rater demographics and how raters report safety of conversational AI systems. We study a sample of 252 human raters stratified by gender, age group, race/ethnicity group, and locale. This rater pool provided safety labels for 1,340 human-chatbot conversations. Our results show that intersectional effects involving demographic characteristics such as race/ethnicity, gender, and age, as well as content characteristics, such as degree of harm, all play significant roles in determining the safety of conversational AI systems. For example, race/ethnicity and gender show strong intersectional effects, particularly among South Asian and East Asian women. We also find that conversational degree of harm impacts raters of all race/ethnicity groups, but that Indigenous and South Asian raters are particularly sensitive to this harm. Finally, we observe the effect of education is uniquely intersectional for Indigenous raters, highlighting the utility of multilevel frameworks for uncovering underrepresented social perspectives.
We aim to identify the time-dependent source term in the diffusion equation using boundary measurements. This facilitates tracing back the origins of environmental pollutants. Based on the idea of dynamic complex geometrical optics (CGO) solutions, we analyze a variational formulation of the inverse source problem and prove the uniqueness result. We propose a two-step reconstruction algorithm. Initially, the locations of the point sources are determined, followed by the reconstruction of the Fourier components of the emission concentration functions. Numerical experiments on simulated data are conducted. The results demonstrate that our proposed two-step reconstruction algorithm can reliably reconstruct multiple point sources and accurately reconstruct the emission concentration functions. Additionally, we partition the algorithm into online and offline computations, with the bulk of the work done offline. This paves the way for real-time traceability of pollutants. Our proposed method, applicable in various fields - especially those related to water pollution, can identify the source of a contaminant in the environment, thus serving as a valuable tool in environmental protection.
Unsupervised Domain Adaptation (UDA) aims to solve the problem of label scarcity of the target domain by transferring the knowledge from the label rich source domain. Usually, the source domain consists of synthetic images for which the annotation is easily obtained using the well known computer graphics techniques. However, obtaining annotation for real world images (target domain) require lot of manual annotation effort and is very time consuming because it requires per pixel annotation. To address this problem we propose SegDA module to enhance transfer performance of UDA methods by learning the maximum separable segment representation. This resolves the problem of identifying visually similar classes like pedestrian/rider, sidewalk/road etc. We leveraged Equiangular Tight Frame (ETF) classifier inspired from Neural Collapse for maximal separation between segment classes. This causes the source domain pixel representation to collapse to a single vector forming a simplex vertices which are aligned to the maximal separable ETF classifier. We use this phenomenon to propose the novel architecture for domain adaptation of segment representation for target domain. Additionally, we proposed to estimate the noise in labelling the target domain images and update the decoder for noise correction which encourages the discovery of pixels for classes not identified in pseudo labels. We have used four UDA benchmarks simulating synthetic-to-real, daytime-to-nighttime, clear-to-adverse weather scenarios. Our proposed approach outperforms +2.2 mIoU on GTA -> Cityscapes, +2.0 mIoU on Synthia -> Cityscapes, +5.9 mIoU on Cityscapes -> DarkZurich, +2.6 mIoU on Cityscapes -> ACDC.
Inspired by the recent success of large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT, researchers start to explore the adoption of LLMs for agile hardware design, such as generating design RTL based on natural-language instructions. However, in existing works, their target designs are all relatively simple and in a small scale, and proposed by the authors themselves, making a fair comparison among different LLM solutions challenging. In addition, many prior works only focus on the design correctness, without evaluating the design qualities of generated design RTL. In this work, we propose an open-source benchmark named RTLLM, for generating design RTL with natural language instructions. To systematically evaluate the auto-generated design RTL, we summarized three progressive goals, named syntax goal, functionality goal, and design quality goal. This benchmark can automatically provide a quantitative evaluation of any given LLM-based solution. Furthermore, we propose an easy-to-use yet surprisingly effective prompt engineering technique named self-planning, which proves to significantly boost the performance of GPT-3.5 in our proposed benchmark.
In this research, a comparative study of four Quantum Machine Learning (QML) models was conducted for fraud detection in finance. We proved that the Quantum Support Vector Classifier model achieved the highest performance, with F1 scores of 0.98 for fraud and non-fraud classes. Other models like the Variational Quantum Classifier, Estimator Quantum Neural Network (QNN), and Sampler QNN demonstrate promising results, propelling the potential of QML classification for financial applications. While they exhibit certain limitations, the insights attained pave the way for future enhancements and optimisation strategies. However, challenges exist, including the need for more efficient Quantum algorithms and larger and more complex datasets. The article provides solutions to overcome current limitations and contributes new insights to the field of Quantum Machine Learning in fraud detection, with important implications for its future development.
Reasoning is a fundamental aspect of human intelligence that plays a crucial role in activities such as problem solving, decision making, and critical thinking. In recent years, large language models (LLMs) have made significant progress in natural language processing, and there is observation that these models may exhibit reasoning abilities when they are sufficiently large. However, it is not yet clear to what extent LLMs are capable of reasoning. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of the current state of knowledge on reasoning in LLMs, including techniques for improving and eliciting reasoning in these models, methods and benchmarks for evaluating reasoning abilities, findings and implications of previous research in this field, and suggestions on future directions. Our aim is to provide a detailed and up-to-date review of this topic and stimulate meaningful discussion and future work.
In pace with developments in the research field of artificial intelligence, knowledge graphs (KGs) have attracted a surge of interest from both academia and industry. As a representation of semantic relations between entities, KGs have proven to be particularly relevant for natural language processing (NLP), experiencing a rapid spread and wide adoption within recent years. Given the increasing amount of research work in this area, several KG-related approaches have been surveyed in the NLP research community. However, a comprehensive study that categorizes established topics and reviews the maturity of individual research streams remains absent to this day. Contributing to closing this gap, we systematically analyzed 507 papers from the literature on KGs in NLP. Our survey encompasses a multifaceted review of tasks, research types, and contributions. As a result, we present a structured overview of the research landscape, provide a taxonomy of tasks, summarize our findings, and highlight directions for future work.
Inspired by the human cognitive system, attention is a mechanism that imitates the human cognitive awareness about specific information, amplifying critical details to focus more on the essential aspects of data. Deep learning has employed attention to boost performance for many applications. Interestingly, the same attention design can suit processing different data modalities and can easily be incorporated into large networks. Furthermore, multiple complementary attention mechanisms can be incorporated in one network. Hence, attention techniques have become extremely attractive. However, the literature lacks a comprehensive survey specific to attention techniques to guide researchers in employing attention in their deep models. Note that, besides being demanding in terms of training data and computational resources, transformers only cover a single category in self-attention out of the many categories available. We fill this gap and provide an in-depth survey of 50 attention techniques categorizing them by their most prominent features. We initiate our discussion by introducing the fundamental concepts behind the success of attention mechanism. Next, we furnish some essentials such as the strengths and limitations of each attention category, describe their fundamental building blocks, basic formulations with primary usage, and applications specifically for computer vision. We also discuss the challenges and open questions related to attention mechanism in general. Finally, we recommend possible future research directions for deep attention.
Deep learning methods are achieving ever-increasing performance on many artificial intelligence tasks. A major limitation of deep models is that they are not amenable to interpretability. This limitation can be circumvented by developing post hoc techniques to explain the predictions, giving rise to the area of explainability. Recently, explainability of deep models on images and texts has achieved significant progress. In the area of graph data, graph neural networks (GNNs) and their explainability are experiencing rapid developments. However, there is neither a unified treatment of GNN explainability methods, nor a standard benchmark and testbed for evaluations. In this survey, we provide a unified and taxonomic view of current GNN explainability methods. Our unified and taxonomic treatments of this subject shed lights on the commonalities and differences of existing methods and set the stage for further methodological developments. To facilitate evaluations, we generate a set of benchmark graph datasets specifically for GNN explainability. We summarize current datasets and metrics for evaluating GNN explainability. Altogether, this work provides a unified methodological treatment of GNN explainability and a standardized testbed for evaluations.
Large knowledge graphs often grow to store temporal facts that model the dynamic relations or interactions of entities along the timeline. Since such temporal knowledge graphs often suffer from incompleteness, it is important to develop time-aware representation learning models that help to infer the missing temporal facts. While the temporal facts are typically evolving, it is observed that many facts often show a repeated pattern along the timeline, such as economic crises and diplomatic activities. This observation indicates that a model could potentially learn much from the known facts appeared in history. To this end, we propose a new representation learning model for temporal knowledge graphs, namely CyGNet, based on a novel timeaware copy-generation mechanism. CyGNet is not only able to predict future facts from the whole entity vocabulary, but also capable of identifying facts with repetition and accordingly predicting such future facts with reference to the known facts in the past. We evaluate the proposed method on the knowledge graph completion task using five benchmark datasets. Extensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of CyGNet for predicting future facts with repetition as well as de novo fact prediction.
The problem of Multiple Object Tracking (MOT) consists in following the trajectory of different objects in a sequence, usually a video. In recent years, with the rise of Deep Learning, the algorithms that provide a solution to this problem have benefited from the representational power of deep models. This paper provides a comprehensive survey on works that employ Deep Learning models to solve the task of MOT on single-camera videos. Four main steps in MOT algorithms are identified, and an in-depth review of how Deep Learning was employed in each one of these stages is presented. A complete experimental comparison of the presented works on the three MOTChallenge datasets is also provided, identifying a number of similarities among the top-performing methods and presenting some possible future research directions.
