We consider the Boussinesq-Peregrine (BP) system as described by Lannes [Lannes, D. (2013). The water waves problem: mathematical analysis and asymptotics (Vol. 188). American Mathematical Soc.], within the shallow water regime, and study the inverse problem of determining the time and space variations of the channel bottom profile, from measurements of the wave profile and its velocity on the free surface. A well-posedness result within a Sobolev framework for (BP), considering a time dependent bottom, is presented. Then, the inverse problem is reformulated as a nonlinear PDEconstrained optimization one. An existence result of the minimum, under constraints on the admissible set of bottoms, is presented. Moreover, an implementation of the gradient descent approach, via the adjoint method, is considered. For solving numerically both, the forward (BP) and its adjoint system, we derive a universal and low-dissipation scheme, which contains non-conservative products. The scheme is based on the FORCE-{\alpha} method proposed in [Toro, E. F., Saggiorato, B., Tokareva, S., and Hidalgo, A. (2020). Low-dissipation centred schemes for hyperbolic equations in conservative and non-conservative form. Journal of Computational Physics, 416, 109545]. Finally, we implement this methodology to recover three different bottom profiles; a smooth bottom, a discontinuous one, and a continuous profile with a large gradient. We compare with two classical discretizations for (BP) and the adjoint system. These results corroborate the effectiveness of the proposed methodology to recover bottom profiles.

The paper presents a numerical method for simulating flow and mechanics in fractured rock. The governing equations that couple the effects in the rock mass and in the fractures are obtained using the discrete fracture-matrix approach. The fracture flow is driven by the cubic law, and the contact conditions prevent fractures from self-penetration. A stable finite element discretization is proposed for the displacement-pressure-flux formulation. The resulting nonlinear algebraic system of equations and inequalities is decoupled using a robust iterative splitting into the linearized flow subproblem, and the quadratic programming problem for the mechanical part. The non-penetration conditions are solved by means of dualization and an optimal quadratic programming algorithm. The capability of the numerical scheme is demonstrated on a benchmark problem for tunnel excavation with hundreds of fractures in 3D. The paper's novelty consists in a combination of three crucial ingredients: (i) application of discrete fracture-matrix approach to poroelasticity, (ii) robust iterative splitting of resulting nonlinear algebraic system working for real-world 3D problems, and (iii) efficient solution of its mechanical quadratic programming part with a large number of fractures in mutual contact by means of own solvers implemented into an in-house software library.

The Bell regression model (BRM) is a statistical model that is often used in the analysis of count data that exhibits overdispersion. In this study, we propose a Bayesian analysis of the BRM and offer a new perspective on its application. Specifically, we introduce a G-prior distribution for Bayesian inference in BRM, in addition to a flat-normal prior distribution. To compare the performance of the proposed prior distributions, we conduct a simulation study and demonstrate that the G-prior distribution provides superior estimation results for the BRM. Furthermore, we apply the methodology to real data and compare the BRM to the Poisson regression model using various model selection criteria. Our results provide valuable insights into the use of Bayesian methods for estimation and inference of the BRM and highlight the importance of considering the choice of prior distribution in the analysis of count data.

The Sum-of-Squares (SOS) approximation method is a technique used in optimization problems to derive lower bounds on the optimal value of an objective function. By representing the objective function as a sum of squares in a feature space, the SOS method transforms non-convex global optimization problems into solvable semidefinite programs. This note presents an overview of the SOS method. We start with its application in finite-dimensional feature spaces and, subsequently, we extend it to infinite-dimensional feature spaces using reproducing kernels (k-SOS). Estimating position bias is a well-known challenge in Learning to Rank (L2R). Click data in e-commerce applications, such as targeted advertisements and search engines, provides implicit but abundant feedback to improve personalized rankings. However, click data inherently includes various biases like position bias. Based on the position-based click model, Result Randomization and Regression Expectation-Maximization algorithm (REM) have been proposed to estimate position bias, but they require various paired observations of (item, position). In real-world scenarios of advertising, marketers frequently display advertisements in a fixed pre-determined order, which creates difficulties in estimation due to the limited availability of various pairs in the training data, resulting in a sparse dataset. We propose a variant of the REM that utilizes item embeddings to alleviate the sparsity of (item, position). Using a public dataset and internal carousel advertisement click dataset, we empirically show that item embedding with Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI) and Variational Auto-Encoder (VAE) improves the accuracy of position bias estimation and the estimated position bias enhances Learning to Rank performance. We also show that LSI is more effective as an embedding creation method for position bias estimation.

A higher-order change-of-measure multilevel Monte Carlo (MLMC) method is developed for computing weak approximations of the invariant measures of SDE with drift coefficients that do not satisfy the contractivity condition. This is achieved by introducing a spring term in the pairwise coupling of the MLMC trajectories employing the order 1.5 strong It\^o--Taylor method. Through this, we can recover the contractivity property of the drift coefficient while still retaining the telescoping sum property needed for implementing the MLMC method. We show that the variance of the change-of-measure MLMC method grows linearly in time $T$ for all $T > 0$, and for all sufficiently small timestep size $h > 0$. For a given error tolerance $\epsilon > 0$, we prove that the method achieves a mean-square-error accuracy of $O(\epsilon^2)$ with a computational cost of $O(\epsilon^{-2} \big\vert \log \epsilon \big\vert^{3/2} (\log \big\vert \log \epsilon \big\vert)^{1/2})$ for uniformly Lipschitz continuous payoff functions and $O \big( \epsilon^{-2} \big\vert \log \epsilon \big\vert^{5/3 + \xi} \big)$ for discontinuous payoffs, respectively, where $\xi > 0$. A preference-based subjective evaluation is a key method for evaluating generative media reliably. However, its huge combinations of pairs prohibit it from being applied to large-scale evaluation using crowdsourcing. To address this issue, we propose an automatic optimization method for preference-based subjective evaluation in terms of pair combination selections and allocation of evaluation volumes with online learning in a crowdsourcing environment. We use a preference-based online learning method based on a sorting algorithm to identify the total order of evaluation targets with minimum sample volumes. Our online learning algorithm supports parallel and asynchronous execution under fixed-budget conditions required for crowdsourcing. Our experiment on preference-based subjective evaluation of synthetic speech shows that our method successfully optimizes the test by reducing pair combinations from 351 to 83 and allocating optimal evaluation volumes for each pair ranging from 30 to 663 without compromising evaluation accuracies and wasting budget allocations.

libEnsemble is a Python-based toolkit for running dynamic ensembles, developed as part of the DOE Exascale Computing Project. The toolkit utilizes a unique generator-simulator-allocator paradigm, where generators produce input for simulators, simulators evaluate those inputs, and allocators decide whether and when a simulator or generator should be called. The generator steers the ensemble based on simulation results. libEnsemble communicates between a manager and workers. Flexibility is provided through multiple manager-worker communication substrates each of which has different benefits. These include Python's multiprocessing, mpi4py, and TCP. Multisite ensembles are supported using Balsam or Globus Compute. We overview the unique characteristics of libEnsemble as well as current and potential interoperability with other packages in the workflow ecosystem. We highlight libEnsemble's dynamic resource features: libEnsemble can detect system resources (nodes, cores, and GPUs) and assign these in a portable way. These features allow users to specify resources required for each simulation automatically on a range of systems, including Frontier, Aurora, and Perlmutter. Such ensembles can include multiple simulation types, some using GPUs and others using only CPUs, sharing nodes for maximum efficiency. We demonstrate libEnsemble's capabilities, scalability, and scientific impact via a Gaussian process surrogate training problem for the longitudinal density profile at the exit of a plasma accelerator stage using Wake-T and WarpX simulations. We also describe the benefits of libEnsemble's generator-simulator coupling, which easily exposes to the user the ability to cancel, and portably kill, running simulations. Such control can be directed from the generator or allocator based on models that are updated with intermediate simulation output.

This paper proposes a novel watermarking scheme, so-called WaterMax, that enjoys high detectability while sustaining the quality of the generated text of the original LLM. Its new design leaves the LLM untouched (no modification of the weights, logits, temperature, or sampling technique). WaterMax balances robustness and complexity contrary to the watermarking techniques of the literature inherently provoking a trade-off between quality and robustness. Its performance is both theoretically proven and experimentally validated. It outperforms all the SotA techniques under the most complete benchmark suite.
