Human-robot collaboration has benefited users with higher efficiency towards interactive tasks. Nevertheless, most collaborative schemes rely on complicated human-machine interfaces, which might lack the requisite intuitiveness compared with natural limb control. We also expect to understand human intent with low training data requirements. In response to these challenges, this paper introduces an innovative human-robot collaborative framework that seamlessly integrates hand gesture and dynamic movement recognition, voice recognition, and a switchable control adaptation strategy. These modules provide a user-friendly approach that enables the robot to deliver the tools as per user need, especially when the user is working with both hands. Therefore, users can focus on their task execution without additional training in the use of human-machine interfaces, while the robot interprets their intuitive gestures. The proposed multimodal interaction framework is executed in the UR5e robot platform equipped with a RealSense D435i camera, and the effectiveness is assessed through a soldering circuit board task. The experiment results have demonstrated superior performance in hand gesture recognition, where the static hand gesture recognition module achieves an accuracy of 94.3\%, while the dynamic motion recognition module reaches 97.6\% accuracy. Compared with human solo manipulation, the proposed approach facilitates higher efficiency tool delivery, without significantly distracting from human intents.
Model explainability is crucial for human users to be able to interpret how a proposed classifier assigns labels to data based on its feature values. We study generalized linear models constructed using sets of feature value rules, which can capture nonlinear dependencies and interactions. An inherent trade-off exists between rule set sparsity and its prediction accuracy. It is computationally expensive to find the right choice of sparsity -- e.g., via cross-validation -- with existing methods. We propose a new formulation to learn an ensemble of rule sets that simultaneously addresses these competing factors. Good generalization is ensured while keeping computational costs low by utilizing distributionally robust optimization. The formulation utilizes column generation to efficiently search the space of rule sets and constructs a sparse ensemble of rule sets, in contrast with techniques like random forests or boosting and their variants. We present theoretical results that motivate and justify the use of our distributionally robust formulation. Extensive numerical experiments establish that our method improves over competing methods -- on a large set of publicly available binary classification problem instances -- with respect to one or more of the following metrics: generalization quality, computational cost, and explainability.
Current methods for few-shot action recognition mainly fall into the metric learning framework following ProtoNet, which demonstrates the importance of prototypes. Although they achieve relatively good performance, the effect of multimodal information is ignored, e.g. label texts. In this work, we propose a novel MultimOdal PRototype-ENhanced Network (MORN), which uses the semantic information of label texts as multimodal information to enhance prototypes. A CLIP visual encoder and a frozen CLIP text encoder are introduced to obtain features with good multimodal initialization. Then in the visual flow, visual prototypes are computed by a Temporal-Relational CrossTransformer (TRX) module for example. In the text flow, a semantic-enhanced (SE) module and an inflating operation are used to obtain text prototypes. The final multimodal prototypes are then computed by a multimodal prototype-enhanced (MPE) module. Besides, we define a PRototype SImilarity DiffErence (PRIDE) to evaluate the quality of prototypes, which is used to verify our improvement on the prototype level and effectiveness of MORN. We conduct extensive experiments on four popular datasets, and MORN achieves state-of-the-art results on HMDB51, UCF101, Kinetics and SSv2. When plugging PRIDE into the training stage, the performance can be further improved.
Fairness is crucial when training a deep-learning discriminative model, especially in the facial domain. Models tend to correlate specific characteristics (such as age and skin color) with unrelated attributes (downstream tasks), resulting in biases which do not correspond to reality. It is common knowledge that these correlations are present in the data and are then transferred to the models during training. This paper proposes a method to mitigate these correlations to improve fairness. To do so, we learn interpretable and meaningful paths lying in the semantic space of a pre-trained diffusion model (DiffAE) -- such paths being supervised by contrastive text dipoles. That is, we learn to edit protected characteristics (age and skin color). These paths are then applied to augment images to improve the fairness of a given dataset. We test the proposed method on CelebA-HQ and UTKFace on several downstream tasks with age and skin color as protected characteristics. As a proxy for fairness, we compute the difference in accuracy with respect to the protected characteristics. Quantitative results show how the augmented images help the model improve the overall accuracy, the aforementioned metric, and the disparity of equal opportunity. Large language models(LLMs) exhibit excellent performance across a variety of tasks, but they come with significant computational and storage costs. Quantizing these models is an effective way to alleviate this issue. However, existing methods struggle to strike a balance between model accuracy and hardware efficiency. This is where we introduce AWEQ, a post-training method that requires no additional training overhead. AWEQ excels in both ultra-low-bit quantization and 8-bit weight and activation (W8A8) quantization. There is an observation that weight quantization is less challenging than activation quantization. AWEQ transfers the difficulty of activation quantization to weights using channel equalization, achieving a balance between the quantization difficulties of both, and thereby maximizing performance. We have further refined the equalization method to mitigate quantization bias error, ensuring the robustness of the model. Extensive experiments on popular models such as LLaMA and OPT demonstrate that AWEQ outperforms all existing post-training quantization methods for large models.
The rapid evolution of deep neural networks has revolutionized the field of machine learning, enabling remarkable advancements in various domains. In this article, we introduce NeuroWrite, a unique method for predicting the categorization of handwritten digits using deep neural networks. Our model exhibits outstanding accuracy in identifying and categorising handwritten digits by utilising the strength of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and recurrent neural networks (RNNs).In this article, we give a thorough examination of the data preparation methods, network design, and training methods used in NeuroWrite. By implementing state-of-the-art techniques, we showcase how NeuroWrite can achieve high classification accuracy and robust generalization on handwritten digit datasets, such as MNIST. Furthermore, we explore the model's potential for real-world applications, including digit recognition in digitized documents, signature verification, and automated postal code recognition. NeuroWrite is a useful tool for computer vision and pattern recognition because of its performance and adaptability.The architecture, training procedure, and evaluation metrics of NeuroWrite are covered in detail in this study, illustrating how it can improve a number of applications that call for handwritten digit classification. The outcomes show that NeuroWrite is a promising method for raising the bar for deep neural network-based handwritten digit recognition.
This paper proposes a label-free controller for a second-order multi-agent system to cooperatively fence a moving target of variational velocity into a convex hull formed by the agents whereas maintaining a rigid formation. Therein, no label is predetermined for a specified agent. To attain a rigid formation with guaranteed collision avoidance, each controller consists of two terms: a dynamic regulator with an internal model to drive agents towards the moving target merely by position information feedback, and a repulsive force between each pair of adjacent agents. Significantly, sufficient conditions are derived to guarantee the asymptotic stability of the closed-loop systems governed by the proposed fencing controller. Rigorous analysis is provided to eliminate the strong nonlinear couplings induced by the label-free property. Finally, the effectiveness of the controller is substantiated by numerical simulations.
The development of autonomous agents which can interact with other agents to accomplish a given task is a core area of research in artificial intelligence and machine learning. Towards this goal, the Autonomous Agents Research Group develops novel machine learning algorithms for autonomous systems control, with a specific focus on deep reinforcement learning and multi-agent reinforcement learning. Research problems include scalable learning of coordinated agent policies and inter-agent communication; reasoning about the behaviours, goals, and composition of other agents from limited observations; and sample-efficient learning based on intrinsic motivation, curriculum learning, causal inference, and representation learning. This article provides a broad overview of the ongoing research portfolio of the group and discusses open problems for future directions.
Current models for event causality identification (ECI) mainly adopt a supervised framework, which heavily rely on labeled data for training. Unfortunately, the scale of current annotated datasets is relatively limited, which cannot provide sufficient support for models to capture useful indicators from causal statements, especially for handing those new, unseen cases. To alleviate this problem, we propose a novel approach, shortly named CauSeRL, which leverages external causal statements for event causality identification. First of all, we design a self-supervised framework to learn context-specific causal patterns from external causal statements. Then, we adopt a contrastive transfer strategy to incorporate the learned context-specific causal patterns into the target ECI model. Experimental results show that our method significantly outperforms previous methods on EventStoryLine and Causal-TimeBank (+2.0 and +3.4 points on F1 value respectively).
Detecting carried objects is one of the requirements for developing systems to reason about activities involving people and objects. We present an approach to detect carried objects from a single video frame with a novel method that incorporates features from multiple scales. Initially, a foreground mask in a video frame is segmented into multi-scale superpixels. Then the human-like regions in the segmented area are identified by matching a set of extracted features from superpixels against learned features in a codebook. A carried object probability map is generated using the complement of the matching probabilities of superpixels to human-like regions and background information. A group of superpixels with high carried object probability and strong edge support is then merged to obtain the shape of the carried object. We applied our method to two challenging datasets, and results show that our method is competitive with or better than the state-of-the-art.
Recently, deep learning has achieved very promising results in visual object tracking. Deep neural networks in existing tracking methods require a lot of training data to learn a large number of parameters. However, training data is not sufficient for visual object tracking as annotations of a target object are only available in the first frame of a test sequence. In this paper, we propose to learn hierarchical features for visual object tracking by using tree structure based Recursive Neural Networks (RNN), which have fewer parameters than other deep neural networks, e.g. Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN). First, we learn RNN parameters to discriminate between the target object and background in the first frame of a test sequence. Tree structure over local patches of an exemplar region is randomly generated by using a bottom-up greedy search strategy. Given the learned RNN parameters, we create two dictionaries regarding target regions and corresponding local patches based on the learned hierarchical features from both top and leaf nodes of multiple random trees. In each of the subsequent frames, we conduct sparse dictionary coding on all candidates to select the best candidate as the new target location. In addition, we online update two dictionaries to handle appearance changes of target objects. Experimental results demonstrate that our feature learning algorithm can significantly improve tracking performance on benchmark datasets.
