Face recognition (FR) models can be easily fooled by adversarial examples, which are crafted by adding imperceptible perturbations on benign face images. The existence of adversarial face examples poses a great threat to the security of society. In order to build a more sustainable digital nation, in this paper, we improve the transferability of adversarial face examples to expose more blind spots of existing FR models. Though generating hard samples has shown its effectiveness in improving the generalization of models in training tasks, the effectiveness of utilizing this idea to improve the transferability of adversarial face examples remains unexplored. To this end, based on the property of hard samples and the symmetry between training tasks and adversarial attack tasks, we propose the concept of hard models, which have similar effects as hard samples for adversarial attack tasks. Utilizing the concept of hard models, we propose a novel attack method called Beneficial Perturbation Feature Augmentation Attack (BPFA), which reduces the overfitting of adversarial examples to surrogate FR models by constantly generating new hard models to craft the adversarial examples. Specifically, in the backpropagation, BPFA records the gradients on pre-selected feature maps and uses the gradient on the input image to craft the adversarial example. In the next forward propagation, BPFA leverages the recorded gradients to add beneficial perturbations on their corresponding feature maps to increase the loss. Extensive experiments demonstrate that BPFA can significantly boost the transferability of adversarial attacks on FR.

Achieving real-time capability is an essential prerequisite for the industrial implementation of nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC). Data-driven model reduction offers a way to obtain low-order control models from complex digital twins. In particular, data-driven approaches require little expert knowledge of the particular process and its model, and provide reduced models of a well-defined generic structure. Herein, we apply our recently proposed data-driven reduction strategy based on Koopman theory [Schulze et al. (2022), Comput. Chem. Eng.] to generate a low-order control model of an air separation unit (ASU). The reduced Koopman model combines autoencoders and linear latent dynamics and is constructed using machine learning. Further, we present an NMPC implementation that uses derivative computation tailored to the fixed block structure of reduced Koopman models. Our reduction approach with tailored NMPC implementation enables real-time NMPC of an ASU at an average CPU time decrease by 98 %.

The motions of mechanisms can be described in terms of screw coordinates by means of an exponential mapping. The product of exponentials (POE) describes the configuration of a chain of bodies connected by lower pair joints. The kinematics is thus given in terms of joint screws. The POE serves to express loop constraints for mechanisms as well as the forward kinematics of serial manipulators. Besides the compact formulations, the POE gives rise to purely algebraic relations for derivatives wrt. joint variables. It is known that the partial derivatives of the instantaneous joint screws (columns of the geometric Jacobian) are determined by Lie brackets the joint screws. Lesser-known is that derivative of arbitrary order can be compactly expressed by Lie brackets. This has significance for higher-order forward/inverse kinematics and dynamics of robots and multibody systems. Various relations were reported but are scattered in the literature and insufficiently recognized. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the relevant relations. Its original contributions are closed form and recursive relations for higher-order derivatives and Taylor expansions of various kinematic relations. Their application to kinematic control and dynamics of robotic manipulators and multibody systems is discussed.

We propose a class of nonstationary processes to characterize space- and time-varying directional associations in point-referenced data. We are motivated by spatiotemporal modeling of air pollutants in which local wind patterns are key determinants of the pollutant spread, but information regarding prevailing wind directions may be missing or unreliable. We propose to map a discrete set of wind directions to edges in a sparse directed acyclic graph (DAG), accounting for uncertainty in directional correlation patterns across a domain. The resulting Bag of DAGs processes (BAGs) lead to interpretable nonstationarity and scalability for large data due to sparsity of DAGs in the bag. We outline Bayesian hierarchical models using BAGs and illustrate inferential and performance gains of our methods compared to other state-of-the-art alternatives. We analyze fine particulate matter using high-resolution data from low-cost air quality sensors in California during the 2020 wildfire season. An R package is available on GitHub.

In this letter, the average mutual information (AMI) of generalized quadrature spatial modulation (GQSM) is first derived for continuous-input continuous-output channels. Our mathematical analysis shows that the calculation error induced by Monte Carlo integration increases exponentially with the signal-to-noise ratio. This nature of GQSM is resolved by deriving a closed-form expression. The derived AMI is compared with other related SM schemes and evaluated for different antenna activation patterns. Our results show that an equiprobable antenna selection method slightly decreases AMI of symbols, while the method significantly improves AMI in total.

Linear combination is a potent data fusion method in information retrieval tasks, thanks to its ability to adjust weights for diverse scenarios. However, achieving optimal weight training has traditionally required manual relevance judgments on a large percentage of documents, a labor-intensive and expensive process. In this study, we investigate the feasibility of obtaining near-optimal weights using a mere 20\%-50\% of relevant documents. Through experiments on four TREC datasets, we find that weights trained with multiple linear regression using this reduced set closely rival those obtained with TREC's official "qrels." Our findings unlock the potential for more efficient and affordable data fusion, empowering researchers and practitioners to reap its full benefits with significantly less effort.

We consider relational semantics (R-models) for the Lambek calculus extended with intersection and explicit constants for zero and unit. For its variant without constants and a restriction which disallows empty antecedents, Andreka and Mikulas (1994) prove strong completeness. We show that it fails without this restriction, but, on the other hand, prove weak completeness for non-standard interpretation of constants. For the standard interpretation, even weak completeness fails. The weak completeness result extends to an infinitary setting, for so-called iterative divisions (Kleene star under division). We also prove strong completeness results for product-free fragments.

The circular uniform distribution on the unit circle is closed under summation, that is, the sum of independent circular uniformly distributed random variables is also circular uniformly distributed. In this study, it is shown that a family of circular distributions based on nonnegative trigonometric sums (NNTS) is also closed under summation. Given the flexibility of NNTS circular distributions to model multimodality and skewness, these are good candidates for use as alternative models to test for circular uniformity to detect different deviations from the null hypothesis of circular uniformity. The circular uniform distribution is a member of the NNTS family, but in the NNTS parameter space, it corresponds to a point on the boundary of the parameter space, implying that the regularity conditions are not satisfied when the parameters are estimated by using the maximum likelihood method. Two NNTS tests for circular uniformity were developed by considering the standardised maximum likelihood estimator and the generalised likelihood ratio. Given the nonregularity condition, the critical values of the proposed NNTS circular uniformity tests were obtained via simulation and interpolated for any sample size by the fitting of regression models. The validity of the proposed NNTS circular uniformity tests was evaluated by generating NNTS models close to the circular uniformity null hypothesis.

For models involved in moral decision-making, also known as artificial moral agents (AMA), interpretability provides a way to trust and understand the agent's internal reasoning mechanisms for effective use and error correction. In this paper, we provide an overview of this rapidly-evolving sub-field of AI interpretability, introduce the concept of the Minimum Level of Interpretability (MLI) and recommend an MLI for various types of agents, to aid their safe deployment in real-world settings.

The existence of representative datasets is a prerequisite of many successful artificial intelligence and machine learning models. However, the subsequent application of these models often involves scenarios that are inadequately represented in the data used for training. The reasons for this are manifold and range from time and cost constraints to ethical considerations. As a consequence, the reliable use of these models, especially in safety-critical applications, is a huge challenge. Leveraging additional, already existing sources of knowledge is key to overcome the limitations of purely data-driven approaches, and eventually to increase the generalization capability of these models. Furthermore, predictions that conform with knowledge are crucial for making trustworthy and safe decisions even in underrepresented scenarios. This work provides an overview of existing techniques and methods in the literature that combine data-based models with existing knowledge. The identified approaches are structured according to the categories integration, extraction and conformity. Special attention is given to applications in the field of autonomous driving.

Object detection typically assumes that training and test data are drawn from an identical distribution, which, however, does not always hold in practice. Such a distribution mismatch will lead to a significant performance drop. In this work, we aim to improve the cross-domain robustness of object detection. We tackle the domain shift on two levels: 1) the image-level shift, such as image style, illumination, etc, and 2) the instance-level shift, such as object appearance, size, etc. We build our approach based on the recent state-of-the-art Faster R-CNN model, and design two domain adaptation components, on image level and instance level, to reduce the domain discrepancy. The two domain adaptation components are based on H-divergence theory, and are implemented by learning a domain classifier in adversarial training manner. The domain classifiers on different levels are further reinforced with a consistency regularization to learn a domain-invariant region proposal network (RPN) in the Faster R-CNN model. We evaluate our newly proposed approach using multiple datasets including Cityscapes, KITTI, SIM10K, etc. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed approach for robust object detection in various domain shift scenarios.
