We introduce an quantum entropy for bimodule quantum channels on finite von Neumann algebras, generalizing the remarkable Pimsner-Popa entropy. The relative entropy for Fourier multipliers of bimodule quantum channels establishes an upper bound of the quantum entropy. Additionally, we present the Araki relative entropy for bimodule quantum channels, revealing its equivalence to the relative entropy for Fourier multipliers and demonstrating its left/right monotonicities and convexity. Notably, the quantum entropy attains its maximum if there is a downward Jones basic construction. By considering R\'{e}nyi entropy for Fourier multipliers, we find a continuous bridge between the logarithm of the Pimsner-Popa index and the Pimsner-Popa entropy. As a consequence, the R\'{e}nyi entropy at $1/2$ serves a criterion for the existence of a downward Jones basic construction.

This paper introduces a novel deep-learning-based approach for numerical simulation of a time-evolving Schr\"odinger equation inspired by stochastic mechanics and generative diffusion models. Unlike existing approaches, which exhibit computational complexity that scales exponentially in the problem dimension, our method allows us to adapt to the latent low-dimensional structure of the wave function by sampling from the Markovian diffusion. Depending on the latent dimension, our method may have far lower computational complexity in higher dimensions. Moreover, we propose novel equations for stochastic quantum mechanics, resulting in linear computational complexity with respect to the number of dimensions. Numerical simulations verify our theoretical findings and show a significant advantage of our method compared to other deep-learning-based approaches used for quantum mechanics.

We propose Structured Language Generation Model (SLGM), a mixture of new loss function and inference method for better generalization of structured outputs. Previous studies on structure prediction (e.g. NER, RE) make use of explicit dataset information, which would boost performance, yet it might pose challenges to robust generalization in real-world situations. Instead, our model gives generalized format information about data indirectly. With format information, we could reduce sequence-to-sequence problem into classification problem via loss calibration and formatted decoding. Our experimental results showed SLGM successfully maintain performance without dataset information, and showed much less format errors. We also showed our model can work like adapters on individual dataset, with no additional training.

Quantum Machine Learning (QML) has emerged as a promising field of research, aiming to leverage the capabilities of quantum computing to enhance existing machine learning methodologies. Recent studies have revealed that, like their classical counterparts, QML models based on Parametrized Quantum Circuits (PQCs) are also vulnerable to adversarial attacks. Moreover, the existence of Universal Adversarial Perturbations (UAPs) in the quantum domain has been demonstrated theoretically in the context of quantum classifiers. In this work, we introduce QuGAP: a novel framework for generating UAPs for quantum classifiers. We conceptualize the notion of additive UAPs for PQC-based classifiers and theoretically demonstrate their existence. We then utilize generative models (QuGAP-A) to craft additive UAPs and experimentally show that quantum classifiers are susceptible to such attacks. Moreover, we formulate a new method for generating unitary UAPs (QuGAP-U) using quantum generative models and a novel loss function based on fidelity constraints. We evaluate the performance of the proposed framework and show that our method achieves state-of-the-art misclassification rates, while maintaining high fidelity between legitimate and adversarial samples.

We consider the time and space required for quantum computers to solve a wide variety of problems involving matrices, many of which have only been analyzed classically in prior work. Our main results show that for a range of linear algebra problems -- including matrix-vector product, matrix inversion, matrix multiplication and powering -- existing classical time-space tradeoffs, several of which are tight for every space bound, also apply to quantum algorithms. For example, for almost all matrices $A$, including the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) matrix, we prove that quantum circuits with at most $T$ input queries and $S$ qubits of memory require $T=\Omega(n^2/S)$ to compute matrix-vector product $Ax$ for $x \in \{0,1\}^n$. We similarly prove that matrix multiplication for $n\times n$ binary matrices requires $T=\Omega(n^3 / \sqrt{S})$. Because many of our lower bounds match deterministic algorithms with the same time and space complexity, we show that quantum computers cannot provide any asymptotic advantage for these problems with any space bound. We obtain matching lower bounds for the stronger notion of quantum cumulative memory complexity -- the sum of the space per layer of a circuit. We also consider Boolean (i.e. AND-OR) matrix multiplication and matrix-vector products, improving the previous quantum time-space tradeoff lower bounds for $n\times n$ Boolean matrix multiplication to $T=\Omega(n^{2.5}/S^{1/4})$ from $T=\Omega(n^{2.5}/S^{1/2})$. Our improved lower bound for Boolean matrix multiplication is based on a new coloring argument that extracts more from the strong direct product theorem used in prior work. Our tight lower bounds for linear algebra problems require adding a new bucketing method to the recording-query technique of Zhandry that lets us apply classical arguments to upper bound the success probability of quantum circuits.

In this paper, we explore two fundamental first-order algorithms in convex optimization, namely, gradient descent (GD) and proximal gradient method (ProxGD). Our focus is on making these algorithms entirely adaptive by leveraging local curvature information of smooth functions. We propose adaptive versions of GD and ProxGD that are based on observed gradient differences and, thus, have no added computational costs. Moreover, we prove convergence of our methods assuming only local Lipschitzness of the gradient. In addition, the proposed versions allow for even larger stepsizes than those initially suggested in [MM20].

Score-based generative models are a popular class of generative modelling techniques relying on stochastic differential equations (SDE). From their inception, it was realized that it was also possible to perform generation using ordinary differential equations (ODE) rather than SDE. This led to the introduction of the probability flow ODE approach and denoising diffusion implicit models. Flow matching methods have recently further extended these ODE-based approaches and approximate a flow between two arbitrary probability distributions. Previous work derived bounds on the approximation error of diffusion models under the stochastic sampling regime, given assumptions on the $L^2$ loss. We present error bounds for the flow matching procedure using fully deterministic sampling, assuming an $L^2$ bound on the approximation error and a certain regularity condition on the data distributions.

We study operations on fixpoint equation systems (FES) over arbitrary complete lattices. We investigate under which conditions these operations, such as substituting variables by their definition, and swapping the ordering of equations, preserve the solution of a FES. We provide rigorous, computer-checked proofs. Along the way, we list a number of known and new identities and inequalities on extremal fixpoints in complete lattices.

Private selection mechanisms (e.g., Report Noisy Max, Sparse Vector) are fundamental primitives of differentially private (DP) data analysis with wide applications to private query release, voting, and hyperparameter tuning. Recent work (Liu and Talwar, 2019; Papernot and Steinke, 2022) has made significant progress in both generalizing private selection mechanisms and tightening their privacy analysis using modern numerical privacy accounting tools, e.g., R\'enyi DP. But R\'enyi DP is known to be lossy when $(\epsilon,\delta)$-DP is ultimately needed, and there is a trend to close the gap by directly handling privacy profiles, i.e., $\delta$ as a function of $\epsilon$ or its equivalent dual form known as $f$-DPs. In this paper, we work out an easy-to-use recipe that bounds the privacy profiles of ReportNoisyMax and PrivateTuning using the privacy profiles of the base algorithms they corral. Numerically, our approach improves over the RDP-based accounting in all regimes of interest and leads to substantial benefits in end-to-end private learning experiments. Our analysis also suggests new distributions, e.g., binomial distribution for randomizing the number of rounds that leads to more substantial improvements in certain regimes.

We develop a general theory to optimize the frequentist regret for sequential learning problems, where efficient bandit and reinforcement learning algorithms can be derived from unified Bayesian principles. We propose a novel optimization approach to generate "algorithmic beliefs" at each round, and use Bayesian posteriors to make decisions. The optimization objective to create "algorithmic beliefs," which we term "Algorithmic Information Ratio," represents an intrinsic complexity measure that effectively characterizes the frequentist regret of any algorithm. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first systematical approach to make Bayesian-type algorithms prior-free and applicable to adversarial settings, in a generic and optimal manner. Moreover, the algorithms are simple and often efficient to implement. As a major application, we present a novel algorithm for multi-armed bandits that achieves the "best-of-all-worlds" empirical performance in the stochastic, adversarial, and non-stationary environments. And we illustrate how these principles can be used in linear bandits, bandit convex optimization, and reinforcement learning.

Humans perceive the world by concurrently processing and fusing high-dimensional inputs from multiple modalities such as vision and audio. Machine perception models, in stark contrast, are typically modality-specific and optimised for unimodal benchmarks, and hence late-stage fusion of final representations or predictions from each modality (`late-fusion') is still a dominant paradigm for multimodal video classification. Instead, we introduce a novel transformer based architecture that uses `fusion bottlenecks' for modality fusion at multiple layers. Compared to traditional pairwise self-attention, our model forces information between different modalities to pass through a small number of bottleneck latents, requiring the model to collate and condense the most relevant information in each modality and only share what is necessary. We find that such a strategy improves fusion performance, at the same time reducing computational cost. We conduct thorough ablation studies, and achieve state-of-the-art results on multiple audio-visual classification benchmarks including Audioset, Epic-Kitchens and VGGSound. All code and models will be released.
