The knowledge of channel covariance matrices is crucial to the design of intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) assisted communication. However, channel covariance matrices may change suddenly in practice. This letter focuses on the detection of the above change in IRS-assisted communication. Specifically, we consider the uplink communication system consisting of a single-antenna user (UE), an IRS, and a multi-antenna base station (BS). We first categorize two types of channel covariance matrix changes based on their impact on system design: Type I change, which denotes the change in the BS receive covariance matrix, and Type II change, which denotes the change in the IRS transmit/receive covariance matrix. Secondly, a powerful method is proposed to detect whether a Type I change occurs, a Type II change occurs, or no change occurs. The effectiveness of our proposed scheme is verified by numerical results.
Low-precision fine-tuning of language models has gained prominence as a cost-effective and energy-efficient approach to deploying large-scale models in various applications. However, this approach is susceptible to the existence of outlier values in activation. The outlier values in the activation can negatively affect the performance of fine-tuning language models in the low-precision regime since they affect the scaling factor and thus make representing smaller values harder. This paper investigates techniques for mitigating outlier activation in low-precision integer fine-tuning of the language models. Our proposed novel approach enables us to represent the outlier activation values in 8-bit integers instead of floating-point (FP16) values. The benefit of using integers for outlier values is that it enables us to use operator tiling to avoid performing 16-bit integer matrix multiplication to address this problem effectively. We provide theoretical analysis and supporting experiments to demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach in improving the robustness and performance of low-precision fine-tuned language models.
Minimal and efficient graph representations are key to store, communicate, and sample the search space of graphs and networks while meeting user-defined criteria. In this paper, we investigate the feasibility of gradient-free optimization heuristics based on Differential Evolution to search for minimal integer representations of undirected graphs. The class of Differential Evolution algorithms are population-based gradient-free optimization heuristics having found a relevant attention in the nonconvex and nonlinear optimization communities. Our computational experiments using eight classes of Differential Evolution schemes and graph instances with varying degrees of sparsity have shown the merit of attaining minimal numbers for graph encoding/representation rendered by exploration-oriented strategies within few function evaluations. Our results have the potential to elucidate new number-based encoding and sample-based algorithms for graph representation, network design and optimization.
Optimizing static risk-averse objectives in Markov decision processes is difficult because they do not admit standard dynamic programming equations common in Reinforcement Learning (RL) algorithms. Dynamic programming decompositions that augment the state space with discrete risk levels have recently gained popularity in the RL community. Prior work has shown that these decompositions are optimal when the risk level is discretized sufficiently. However, we show that these popular decompositions for Conditional-Value-at-Risk (CVaR) and Entropic-Value-at-Risk (EVaR) are inherently suboptimal regardless of the discretization level. In particular, we show that a saddle point property assumed to hold in prior literature may be violated. However, a decomposition does hold for Value-at-Risk and our proof demonstrates how this risk measure differs from CVaR and EVaR. Our findings are significant because risk-averse algorithms are used in high-stake environments, making their correctness much more critical.
Finding a minimum vertex cover in a network is a fundamental NP-complete graph problem. One way to deal with its computational hardness, is to trade the qualitative performance of an algorithm (allowing non-optimal outputs) for an improved running time. For the vertex cover problem, there is a gap between theory and practice when it comes to understanding this tradeoff. On the one hand, it is known that it is NP-hard to approximate a minimum vertex cover within a factor of $\sqrt{2}$. On the other hand, a simple greedy algorithm yields close to optimal approximations in practice. A promising approach towards understanding this discrepancy is to recognize the differences between theoretical worst-case instances and real-world networks. Following this direction, we close the gap between theory and practice by providing an algorithm that efficiently computes nearly optimal vertex cover approximations on hyperbolic random graphs; a network model that closely resembles real-world networks in terms of degree distribution, clustering, and the small-world property. More precisely, our algorithm computes a $(1 + o(1))$-approximation, asymptotically almost surely, and has a running time of $\mathcal{O}(m \log(n))$. The proposed algorithm is an adaptation of the successful greedy approach, enhanced with a procedure that improves on parts of the graph where greedy is not optimal. This makes it possible to introduce a parameter that can be used to tune the tradeoff between approximation performance and running time. Our empirical evaluation on real-world networks shows that this allows for improving over the near-optimal results of the greedy approach.
Accurately estimating Origin-Destination (OD) matrices is a topic of increasing interest for efficient transportation network management and sustainable urban planning. Traditionally, travel surveys have supported this process; however, their availability and comprehensiveness can be limited. Moreover, the recent COVID-19 pandemic has triggered unprecedented shifts in mobility patterns, underscoring the urgency of accurate and dynamic mobility data supporting policies and decisions with data-driven evidence. In this study, we tackle these challenges by introducing an innovative pipeline for estimating dynamic OD matrices. The real motivating problem behind this is based on the Trenord railway transportation network in Lombardy, Italy. We apply a novel approach that integrates ticket and subscription sales data with passenger counts obtained from Automated Passenger Counting (APC) systems, making use of the Iterative Proportional Fitting (IPF) algorithm. Our work effectively addresses the complexities posed by incomplete and diverse data sources, showcasing the adaptability of our pipeline across various transportation contexts. Ultimately, this research bridges the gap between available data sources and the escalating need for precise OD matrices. The proposed pipeline fosters a comprehensive grasp of transportation network dynamics, providing a valuable tool for transportation operators, policymakers, and researchers. Indeed, to highlight the potentiality of dynamic OD matrices, we showcase some methods to perform anomaly detection of mobility trends in the network through such matrices and interpret them in light of events that happened in the last months of 2022.
Management of network resources in advanced IoT applications is a challenging topic due to their distributed nature from the Edge to the Cloud, and the heavy demand of real-time data from many sources to take action in the deployment. FANETs (Flying Ad-hoc Networks) are a clear example of heterogeneous multi-modal use cases, which require strict quality in the network communications, as well as the coordination of the computing capabilities, in order to operate correctly the final service. In this paper, we present a Virtual Network Embedding (VNE) framework designed for the allocation of dataflow applications, composed of nano-services that produce or consume data, in a wireless infrastructure, such as an airborne network. To address the problem, an anypath-based heuristic algorithm that considers the quality demand of the communication between nano-services is proposed, coined as Quality-Revenue Paired Anypath Dataflow VNE (QRPAD-VNE). We also provide a simulation environment for the evaluation of its performance according to the virtual network (VN) request load in the system. Finally, we show the suitability of a multi-parameter framework in conjunction with anypath routing in order to have better performance results that guarantee minimum quality in the wireless communications.
High-level synthesis (HLS) tools have provided significant productivity enhancements to the design flow of digital systems in recent years, resulting in highly-optimized circuits, in terms of area and latency. Given the evolution of hardware attacks, which can render them vulnerable, it is essential to consider security as a significant aspect of the HLS design flow. Yet the need to evaluate a huge number of functionally equivalent de-signs of the HLS design space challenges hardware security evaluation methods (e.g., fault injection - FI campaigns). In this work, we propose an evaluation methodology of hardware security properties of HLS-produced designs using state-of-the-art Graph Neural Network (GNN) approaches that achieves significant speedup and better scalability than typical evaluation methods (such as FI). We demonstrate the proposed methodology on a Double Modular Redundancy (DMR) coun-termeasure applied on an AES SBox implementation, en-hanced by diversifying the redundant modules through HLS directives. The experimental results show that GNNs can be efficiently trained to predict important hardware security met-rics concerning fault attacks (e.g., critical and detection error rates), by using regression. The proposed method predicts the fault vulnerability metrics of the HLS-based designs with high R-squared scores and achieves huge speedup compared to fault injection once the training of the GNN is completed.
Graph neural networks (GNNs) have been demonstrated to be a powerful algorithmic model in broad application fields for their effectiveness in learning over graphs. To scale GNN training up for large-scale and ever-growing graphs, the most promising solution is distributed training which distributes the workload of training across multiple computing nodes. However, the workflows, computational patterns, communication patterns, and optimization techniques of distributed GNN training remain preliminarily understood. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive survey of distributed GNN training by investigating various optimization techniques used in distributed GNN training. First, distributed GNN training is classified into several categories according to their workflows. In addition, their computational patterns and communication patterns, as well as the optimization techniques proposed by recent work are introduced. Second, the software frameworks and hardware platforms of distributed GNN training are also introduced for a deeper understanding. Third, distributed GNN training is compared with distributed training of deep neural networks, emphasizing the uniqueness of distributed GNN training. Finally, interesting issues and opportunities in this field are discussed.
Autonomic computing investigates how systems can achieve (user) specified control outcomes on their own, without the intervention of a human operator. Autonomic computing fundamentals have been substantially influenced by those of control theory for closed and open-loop systems. In practice, complex systems may exhibit a number of concurrent and inter-dependent control loops. Despite research into autonomic models for managing computer resources, ranging from individual resources (e.g., web servers) to a resource ensemble (e.g., multiple resources within a data center), research into integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) to improve resource autonomy and performance at scale continues to be a fundamental challenge. The integration of AI/ML to achieve such autonomic and self-management of systems can be achieved at different levels of granularity, from full to human-in-the-loop automation. In this article, leading academics, researchers, practitioners, engineers, and scientists in the fields of cloud computing, AI/ML, and quantum computing join to discuss current research and potential future directions for these fields. Further, we discuss challenges and opportunities for leveraging AI and ML in next generation computing for emerging computing paradigms, including cloud, fog, edge, serverless and quantum computing environments.
Deep neural networks have revolutionized many machine learning tasks in power systems, ranging from pattern recognition to signal processing. The data in these tasks is typically represented in Euclidean domains. Nevertheless, there is an increasing number of applications in power systems, where data are collected from non-Euclidean domains and represented as the graph-structured data with high dimensional features and interdependency among nodes. The complexity of graph-structured data has brought significant challenges to the existing deep neural networks defined in Euclidean domains. Recently, many studies on extending deep neural networks for graph-structured data in power systems have emerged. In this paper, a comprehensive overview of graph neural networks (GNNs) in power systems is proposed. Specifically, several classical paradigms of GNNs structures (e.g., graph convolutional networks, graph recurrent neural networks, graph attention networks, graph generative networks, spatial-temporal graph convolutional networks, and hybrid forms of GNNs) are summarized, and key applications in power systems such as fault diagnosis, power prediction, power flow calculation, and data generation are reviewed in detail. Furthermore, main issues and some research trends about the applications of GNNs in power systems are discussed.
