The scaled boundary finite element method (SBFEM) has recently been employed as an efficient means to model three-dimensional structures, in particular when the geometry is provided as a voxel-based image. To this end, an octree decomposition of the computational domain is deployed and each cubic cell is treated as an SBFEM subdomain. The surfaces of each subdomain are discretized in the finite element sense. We improve on this idea by combining the semi-analytical concept of the SBFEM with certain transition elements on the subdomains' surfaces. Thus, we avoid the triangulation of surfaces employed in previous works and consequently reduce the number of surface elements and degrees of freedom. In addition, these discretizations allow coupling elements of arbitrary order such that local p-refinement can be achieved straightforwardly.

We propose a novel stochastic algorithm that randomly samples entire rows and columns of the matrix as a way to approximate an arbitrary matrix function using the power series expansion. This contrasts with existing Monte Carlo methods, which only work with one entry at a time, resulting in a significantly better convergence rate than the original approach. To assess the applicability of our method, we compute the subgraph centrality and total communicability of several large networks. In all benchmarks analyzed so far, the performance of our method was significantly superior to the competition, being able to scale up to 64 CPU cores with remarkable efficiency.

We derive and analyze a symmetric interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin scheme for the approximation of the second-order form of the radiative transfer equation in slab geometry. Using appropriate trace lemmas, the analysis can be carried out as for more standard elliptic problems. Supporting examples show the accuracy and stability of the method also numerically, for different polynomial degrees. For discretization, we employ quad-tree grids, which allow for local refinement in phase-space, and we show exemplary that adaptive methods can efficiently approximate discontinuous solutions. We investigate the behavior of hierarchical error estimators and error estimators based on local averaging.

We introduce a new technique called Drapes to enhance the sensitivity in searches for new physics at the LHC. By training diffusion models on side-band data, we show how background templates for the signal region can be generated either directly from noise, or by partially applying the diffusion process to existing data. In the partial diffusion case, data can be drawn from side-band regions, with the inverse diffusion performed for new target conditional values, or from the signal region, preserving the distribution over the conditional property that defines the signal region. We apply this technique to the hunt for resonances using the LHCO di-jet dataset, and achieve state-of-the-art performance for background template generation using high level input features. We also show how Drapes can be applied to low level inputs with jet constituents, reducing the model dependence on the choice of input observables. Using jet constituents we can further improve sensitivity to the signal process, but observe a loss in performance where the signal significance before applying any selection is below 4$\sigma$.

We present a reduced basis method for cheaply constructing (possibly rough) approximations to the nodal basis functions of the virtual element space, and propose to use such approximations for the design of the stabilization term in the virtual element method and for the post-processing of the solution.

The regularity of refinable functions has been analysed in an extensive literature and is well-understood in two cases: 1) univariate 2) multivariate with an isotropic dilation matrix. The general (non-isotropic) case offered a great resistance. It was done only recently by developing the matrix method. In this paper we make the next step and extend the Littlewood-Paley type method, which is very efficient in the aforementioned special cases, to general equations with arbitrary dilation matrices. This gives formulas for the higher order regularity in $W_2^k(\mathbb{R}^n)$ by means of the Perron eigenvalue of a finite-dimensional linear operator on a special cone. Applying those results to recently introduced tile B-splines, we prove that they can have a higher smoothness than the classical ones of the same order. Moreover, the two-digit tile B-splines have the minimal support of the mask among all refinable functions of the same order of approximation. This proves, in particular, the lowest algorithmic complexity of the corresponding subdivision schemes. Examples and numerical results are provided.

Simulation-based inference (SBI) provides a powerful framework for inferring posterior distributions of stochastic simulators in a wide range of domains. In many settings, however, the posterior distribution is not the end goal itself -- rather, the derived parameter values and their uncertainties are used as a basis for deciding what actions to take. Unfortunately, because posterior distributions provided by SBI are (potentially crude) approximations of the true posterior, the resulting decisions can be suboptimal. Here, we address the question of how to perform Bayesian decision making on stochastic simulators, and how one can circumvent the need to compute an explicit approximation to the posterior. Our method trains a neural network on simulated data and can predict the expected cost given any data and action, and can, thus, be directly used to infer the action with lowest cost. We apply our method to several benchmark problems and demonstrate that it induces similar cost as the true posterior distribution. We then apply the method to infer optimal actions in a real-world simulator in the medical neurosciences, the Bayesian Virtual Epileptic Patient, and demonstrate that it allows to infer actions associated with low cost after few simulations.

Block majorization-minimization (BMM) is a simple iterative algorithm for nonconvex optimization that sequentially minimizes a majorizing surrogate of the objective function in each block coordinate while the other block coordinates are held fixed. We consider a family of BMM algorithms for minimizing smooth nonconvex objectives, where each parameter block is constrained within a subset of a Riemannian manifold. We establish that this algorithm converges asymptotically to the set of stationary points, and attains an $\epsilon$-stationary point within $\widetilde{O}(\epsilon^{-2})$ iterations. In particular, the assumptions for our complexity results are completely Euclidean when the underlying manifold is a product of Euclidean or Stiefel manifolds, although our analysis makes explicit use of the Riemannian geometry. Our general analysis applies to a wide range of algorithms with Riemannian constraints: Riemannian MM, block projected gradient descent, optimistic likelihood estimation, geodesically constrained subspace tracking, robust PCA, and Riemannian CP-dictionary-learning. We experimentally validate that our algorithm converges faster than standard Euclidean algorithms applied to the Riemannian setting.

In this paper, a new two-relaxation-time regularized (TRT-R) lattice Boltzmann (LB) model for convection-diffusion equation (CDE) with variable coefficients is proposed. Within this framework, we first derive a TRT-R collision operator by constructing a new regularized procedure through the high-order Hermite expansion of non-equilibrium. Then a first-order discrete-velocity form of discrete source term is introduced to improve the accuracy of the source term. Finally and most importantly, a new first-order space-derivative auxiliary term is proposed to recover the correct CDE with variable coefficients. To evaluate this model, we simulate a classic benchmark problem of the rotating Gaussian pulse. The results show that our model has better accuracy, stability and convergence than other popular LB models, especially in the case of a large time step.

Spatial data can come in a variety of different forms, but two of the most common generating models for such observations are random fields and point processes. Whilst it is known that spectral analysis can unify these two different data forms, specific methodology for the related estimation is yet to be developed. In this paper, we solve this problem by extending multitaper estimation, to estimate the spectral density matrix function for multivariate spatial data, where processes can be any combination of either point processes or random fields. We discuss finite sample and asymptotic theory for the proposed estimators, as well as specific details on the implementation, including how to perform estimation on non-rectangular domains and the correct implementation of multitapering for processes sampled in different ways, e.g. continuously vs on a regular grid.

The log-rank conjecture, a longstanding problem in communication complexity, has persistently eluded resolution for decades. Consequently, some recent efforts have focused on potential approaches for establishing the conjecture in the special case of XOR functions, where the communication matrix is lifted from a boolean function, and the rank of the matrix equals the Fourier sparsity of the function, which is the number of its nonzero Fourier coefficients. In this note, we refute two conjectures. The first has origins in Montanaro and Osborne (arXiv'09) and is considered in Tsang et al. (FOCS'13), and the second one is due to Mande and Sanyal (FSTTCS'20). These conjectures were proposed in order to improve the best-known bound of Lovett (STOC'14) regarding the log-rank conjecture in the special case of XOR functions. Both conjectures speculate that the set of nonzero Fourier coefficients of the boolean function has some strong additive structure. We refute these conjectures by constructing two specific boolean functions tailored to each.
