It is well-known that there exist rigid frameworks whose physical models can snap between different realizations due to non-destructive elastic deformations of material. We present a method to measure this snapping capability based on the total elastic strain energy density of the framework by using the physical concept of Green-Lagrange strain. As this so-called snappability only depends on the intrinsic framework geometry, it enables a fair comparison of pin-jointed body-bar frameworks, thus it can serve engineers as a criterion within the design process of multistable mechanisms. Moreover, it turns out that the value obtained from this intrinsic pseudometric also gives the distance to the closest shaky configuration in the case of isostatic frameworks. Therefore it is suited for the computation of these singularity-distances for diverse mechanical devices. In more detail we study this problem for parallel manipulators of Stewart-Gough type.

We discuss estimating the probability that the sum of nonnegative independent and identically distributed random variables falls below a given threshold, i.e., $\mathbb{P}(\sum_{i=1}^{N}{X_i} \leq \gamma)$, via importance sampling (IS). We are particularly interested in the rare event regime when $N$ is large and/or $\gamma$ is small. The exponential twisting is a popular technique for similar problems that, in most cases, compares favorably to other estimators. However, it has some limitations: i) it assumes the knowledge of the moment generating function of $X_i$ and ii) sampling under the new IS PDF is not straightforward and might be expensive. The aim of this work is to propose an alternative IS PDF that approximately yields, for certain classes of distributions and in the rare event regime, at least the same performance as the exponential twisting technique and, at the same time, does not introduce serious limitations. The first class includes distributions whose probability density functions (PDFs) are asymptotically equivalent, as $x \rightarrow 0$, to $bx^{p}$, for $p>-1$ and $b>0$. For this class of distributions, the Gamma IS PDF with appropriately chosen parameters retrieves approximately, in the rare event regime corresponding to small values of $\gamma$ and/or large values of $N$, the same performance of the estimator based on the use of the exponential twisting technique. In the second class, we consider the Log-normal setting, whose PDF at zero vanishes faster than any polynomial, and we show numerically that a Gamma IS PDF with optimized parameters clearly outperforms the exponential twisting IS PDF. Numerical experiments validate the efficiency of the proposed estimator in delivering a highly accurate estimate in the regime of large $N$ and/or small $\gamma$.

Learning the relationships between various entities from time-series data is essential in many applications. Gaussian graphical models have been studied to infer these relationships. However, existing algorithms process data in a batch at a central location, limiting their applications in scenarios where data is gathered by different agents. In this paper, we propose a distributed sparse inverse covariance algorithm to learn the network structure (i.e., dependencies among observed entities) in real-time from data collected by distributed agents. Our approach is built on an online graphical alternating minimization algorithm, augmented with a consensus term that allows agents to learn the desired structure cooperatively. We allow the system designer to select the number of communication rounds and optimization steps per data point. We characterize the rate of convergence of our algorithm and provide simulations on synthetic datasets.

In the context of epidemiology, policies for disease control are often devised through a mixture of intuition and brute-force, whereby the set of logically conceivable policies is narrowed down to a small family described by a few parameters, following which linearization or grid search is used to identify the optimal policy within the set. This scheme runs the risk of leaving out more complex (and perhaps counter-intuitive) policies for disease control that could tackle the disease more efficiently. In this article, we use techniques from convex optimization theory and machine learning to conduct optimizations over disease policies described by hundreds of parameters. In contrast to past approaches for policy optimization based on control theory, our framework can deal with arbitrary uncertainties on the initial conditions and model parameters controlling the spread of the disease, and stochastic models. In addition, our methods allow for optimization over policies which remain constant over weekly periods, specified by either continuous or discrete (e.g.: lockdown on/off) government measures. We illustrate our approach by minimizing the total time required to eradicate COVID-19 within the Susceptible-Exposed-Infected-Recovered (SEIR) model proposed by Kissler \emph{et al.} (March, 2020).

Denoising is one of the most important data processing tasks and is generally a prerequisite for downstream image analysis in many fields. Despite their superior denoising performance, supervised deep denoising methods require paired noise-clean or noise-noise samples often unavailable in practice. On the other hand, unsupervised deep denoising methods such as Noise2Void and its variants predict masked pixels from their neighboring pixels in single noisy images. However, these unsupervised algorithms only work under the independent noise assumption while real noise distributions are usually correlated with complex structural patterns. Here we propose the first-of-its-kind feature similarity-based unsupervised denoising approach that works in a nonlocal and nonlinear fashion to suppress not only independent but also correlated noise. Our approach is referred to as Noise2Sim since different noisy sub-images with similar signals are extracted to form as many as possible training pairs so that the parameters of a deep denoising network can be optimized in a self-learning fashion. Theoretically, the theorem is established that Noise2Sim is equivalent to the supervised learning methods under mild conditions. Experimentally, Noise2Sim achieves excellent results on natural, microscopic, low-dose CT and photon-counting micro-CT images, removing image noise independent or not and being superior to the competitive denoising methods. Potentially, Noise2Sim would open a new direction of research and lead to the development of adaptive denoising tools in diverse applications.

We study the offline meta-reinforcement learning (OMRL) problem, a paradigm which enables reinforcement learning (RL) algorithms to quickly adapt to unseen tasks without any interactions with the environments, making RL truly practical in many real-world applications. This problem is still not fully understood, for which two major challenges need to be addressed. First, offline RL usually suffers from bootstrapping errors of out-of-distribution state-actions which leads to divergence of value functions. Second, meta-RL requires efficient and robust task inference learned jointly with control policy. In this work, we enforce behavior regularization on learned policy as a general approach to offline RL, combined with a deterministic context encoder for efficient task inference. We propose a novel negative-power distance metric on bounded context embedding space, whose gradients propagation is detached from the Bellman backup. We provide analysis and insight showing that some simple design choices can yield substantial improvements over recent approaches involving meta-RL and distance metric learning. To the best of our knowledge, our method is the first model-free and end-to-end OMRL algorithm, which is computationally efficient and demonstrated to outperform prior algorithms on several meta-RL benchmarks.

The problem of Approximate Nearest Neighbor (ANN) search is fundamental in computer science and has benefited from significant progress in the past couple of decades. However, most work has been devoted to pointsets whereas complex shapes have not been sufficiently treated. Here, we focus on distance functions between discretized curves in Euclidean space: they appear in a wide range of applications, from road segments to time-series in general dimension. For $\ell_p$-products of Euclidean metrics, for any $p$, we design simple and efficient data structures for ANN, based on randomized projections, which are of independent interest. They serve to solve proximity problems under a notion of distance between discretized curves, which generalizes both discrete Fr\'echet and Dynamic Time Warping distances. These are the most popular and practical approaches to comparing such curves. We offer the first data structures and query algorithms for ANN with arbitrarily good approximation factor, at the expense of increasing space usage and preprocessing time over existing methods. Query time complexity is comparable or significantly improved by our algorithms, our algorithm is especially efficient when the length of the curves is bounded.

Because of continuous advances in mathematical programing, Mix Integer Optimization has become a competitive vis-a-vis popular regularization method for selecting features in regression problems. The approach exhibits unquestionable foundational appeal and versatility, but also poses important challenges. We tackle these challenges, reducing computational burden when tuning the sparsity bound (a parameter which is critical for effectiveness) and improving performance in the presence of feature collinearity and of signals that vary in nature and strength. Importantly, we render the approach efficient and effective in applications of realistic size and complexity - without resorting to relaxations or heuristics in the optimization, or abandoning rigorous cross-validation tuning. Computational viability and improved performance in subtler scenarios is achieved with a multi-pronged blueprint, leveraging characteristics of the Mixed Integer Programming framework and by means of whitening, a data pre-processing step.

Methods that align distributions by minimizing an adversarial distance between them have recently achieved impressive results. However, these approaches are difficult to optimize with gradient descent and they often do not converge well without careful hyperparameter tuning and proper initialization. We investigate whether turning the adversarial min-max problem into an optimization problem by replacing the maximization part with its dual improves the quality of the resulting alignment and explore its connections to Maximum Mean Discrepancy. Our empirical results suggest that using the dual formulation for the restricted family of linear discriminators results in a more stable convergence to a desirable solution when compared with the performance of a primal min-max GAN-like objective and an MMD objective under the same restrictions. We test our hypothesis on the problem of aligning two synthetic point clouds on a plane and on a real-image domain adaptation problem on digits. In both cases, the dual formulation yields an iterative procedure that gives more stable and monotonic improvement over time.

Person re-identification (re-ID) models trained on one domain often fail to generalize well to another. In our attempt, we present a "learning via translation" framework. In the baseline, we translate the labeled images from source to target domain in an unsupervised manner. We then train re-ID models with the translated images by supervised methods. Yet, being an essential part of this framework, unsupervised image-image translation suffers from the information loss of source-domain labels during translation. Our motivation is two-fold. First, for each image, the discriminative cues contained in its ID label should be maintained after translation. Second, given the fact that two domains have entirely different persons, a translated image should be dissimilar to any of the target IDs. To this end, we propose to preserve two types of unsupervised similarities, 1) self-similarity of an image before and after translation, and 2) domain-dissimilarity of a translated source image and a target image. Both constraints are implemented in the similarity preserving generative adversarial network (SPGAN) which consists of a Siamese network and a CycleGAN. Through domain adaptation experiment, we show that images generated by SPGAN are more suitable for domain adaptation and yield consistent and competitive re-ID accuracy on two large-scale datasets.
