Recent advances in large language models (LLMs), such as ChatGPT, have showcased remarkable zero-shot performance across various NLP tasks. However, the potential of LLMs in personality detection, which involves identifying an individual's personality from their written texts, remains largely unexplored. Drawing inspiration from Psychological Questionnaires, which are carefully designed by psychologists to evaluate individual personality traits through a series of targeted items, we argue that these items can be regarded as a collection of well-structured chain-of-thought (CoT) processes. By incorporating these processes, LLMs can enhance their capabilities to make more reasonable inferences on personality from textual input. In light of this, we propose a novel personality detection method, called PsyCoT, which mimics the way individuals complete psychological questionnaires in a multi-turn dialogue manner. In particular, we employ a LLM as an AI assistant with a specialization in text analysis. We prompt the assistant to rate individual items at each turn and leverage the historical rating results to derive a conclusive personality preference. Our experiments demonstrate that PsyCoT significantly improves the performance and robustness of GPT-3.5 in personality detection, achieving an average F1 score improvement of 4.23/10.63 points on two benchmark datasets compared to the standard prompting method. Supervised fine-tuning (SFT) is a crucial step for large language models (LLMs), enabling them to align with human instructions and enhance their capabilities in downstream tasks. When the models are required to align with a broader range of downstream tasks, or there is a desire to notably improve the performance on a specific task, a substantial increase in fine-tuning data often emerges as the solution. However, we find that large-scale increases in instruction data can disrupt the world knowledge previously stored in the LLMs, i.e., world knowledge forgetting. In this paper, we introduce LoRAMoE to address the above challenge. The LoRAMoE is a plugin version of Mixture of Experts (MoE). The plugin form ensures the integrity of world knowledge by freezing the backbone model during the training phase. We then propose the use of localized balancing constraints to coordinate parts of experts for task utilization, meanwhile enabling other experts to fully leverage the world knowledge stored in the models. Experimental results demonstrate that LoRAMoE can reasonably coordinate experts based on data type during inference, and even dramatically increasing instruction data does not result in knowledge forgetting. Moreover, LoRAMoE provides additional benefits for the performance of downstream tasks, indicating the potential of our approach for multi-task learning.

This paper explores preference distillation for large vision language models (LVLMs), improving their ability to generate helpful and faithful responses anchoring the visual context. We first build a vision-language feedback (VLFeedback) dataset utilizing AI annotation. Specifically, responses are generated by models sampled from 12 LVLMs, conditioned on multi-modal instructions sourced from various datasets. We adopt GPT-4V to assess the generated outputs regarding helpfulness, visual faithfulness, and ethical considerations. Furthermore, the preference supervision is distilled into Qwen-VL-Chat through the direct preference optimization (DPO) method. The resulting model Silkie, achieves 6.9% and 9.5% relative improvement on the MME benchmark regarding the perception and cognition capabilities, respectively. Silkie also demonstrates reduced hallucination by setting a new state-of-the-art score of 3.02 on the MMHal-Bench benchmark. Further analysis shows that DPO with our VLFeedback dataset mainly boosts the fine-grained perception and complex cognition abilities of LVLMs, leading to more comprehensive improvements compared to human-annotated preference datasets.

Recent advances in contrastive language-image pretraining (CLIP) have demonstrated strong capabilities in zero-shot classification by aligning visual representations with target text embeddings in an image level. However, in dense prediction tasks, CLIP often struggles to localize visual features within an image and fails to give accurate pixel-level predictions, which prevents it from functioning as a generalized visual foundation model. In this work, we aim to enhance CLIP's potential for semantic segmentation with minimal modifications to its pretrained models. By rethinking self-attention, we surprisingly find that CLIP can adapt to dense prediction tasks by simply introducing a novel Correlative Self-Attention (CSA) mechanism. Specifically, we replace the traditional self-attention block of CLIP vision encoder's last layer by our CSA module and reuse its pretrained projection matrices of query, key, and value, leading to a training-free adaptation approach for CLIP's zero-shot semantic segmentation. Extensive experiments show the advantage of CSA: we obtain a 38.2% average zero-shot mIoU across eight semantic segmentation benchmarks highlighted in this paper, significantly outperforming the existing SoTA's 33.9% and the vanilla CLIP's 14.1%.

Recently, natural language generation (NLG) evaluation has shifted from a single-aspect to a multi-aspect paradigm, allowing for a more accurate assessment. Large language models (LLMs) achieve superior performance on various NLG evaluation tasks. However, current work often employs the LLM to independently evaluate different aspects, which largely ignores the rich correlation between various aspects. To fill this research gap, in this work, we propose an NLG evaluation metric called CoAScore. Powered by LLMs, the CoAScore utilizes multi-aspect knowledge through a CoA (\textbf{C}hain-\textbf{o}f-\textbf{A}spects) prompting framework when assessing the quality of a certain aspect. Specifically, for a given aspect to evaluate, we first prompt the LLM to generate a chain of aspects that are relevant to the target aspect and could be useful for the evaluation. We then collect evaluation scores for each generated aspect, and finally, leverage the knowledge of these aspects to improve the evaluation of the target aspect. We evaluate CoAScore across five NLG evaluation tasks (e.g., summarization, dialog response generation, etc) and nine aspects (e.g., overall quality, relevance, coherence, etc). Our experimental findings highlight that, in comparison to individual aspect evaluation, CoAScore exhibits a higher correlation with human judgments. This improvement significantly outperforms existing unsupervised evaluation metrics, whether for assessing overall quality or other aspects. We also conducted extensive ablation studies to validate the effectiveness of the three stages within the CoAScore framework and conducted case studies to show how the LLM performs in these stages. We present SeeThruFinger, a soft robotic finger with an in-finger vision for multi-modal perception, including visual perception and tactile sensing, for geometrically adaptive and real-time reactive grasping. Multi-modal perception of intrinsic and extrinsic interactions is critical in building intelligent robots that learn. Instead of adding various sensors for different modalities, a preferred solution is to integrate them into one elegant and coherent design, which is a challenging task. This study leverages the Soft Polyhedral Network design as a robotic finger, capable of omni-directional adaptation with an unobstructed view of the finger's spatial deformation from the inside. By embedding a miniature camera underneath, we achieve the visual perception of the external environment by inpainting the finger mask using E2FGV, which can be used for object detection in the downstream tasks for grasping. After contacting the objects, we use real-time object segmentation algorithms, such as XMem, to track the soft finger's spatial deformations. We also learned a Supervised Variational Autoencoder to enable tactile sensing of 6D forces and torques for reactive grasp. As a result, we achieved multi-modal perception, including visual perception and tactile sensing, and soft, adaptive object grasping within a single vision-based soft finger design compatible with multi-fingered robotic grippers.

Video-grounded Dialogue (VGD) aims to answer questions regarding a given multi-modal input comprising video, audio, and dialogue history. Although there have been numerous efforts in developing VGD systems to improve the quality of their responses, existing systems are competent only to incorporate the information in the video and text and tend to struggle in extracting the necessary information from the audio when generating appropriate responses to the question. The VGD system seems to be deaf, and thus, we coin this symptom of current systems' ignoring audio data as a deaf response. To overcome the deaf response problem, Hearing Enhanced Audio Response (HEAR) framework is proposed to perform sensible listening by selectively attending to audio whenever the question requires it. The HEAR framework enhances the accuracy and audibility of VGD systems in a model-agnostic manner. HEAR is validated on VGD datasets (i.e., AVSD@DSTC7 and AVSD@DSTC8) and shows effectiveness with various VGD systems.

Large language models (LLMs) have demonstrated remarkable capabilities across a wide range of tasks. However, even the most advanced open-source LLMs, such as the LLaMA family models, still face challenges when it comes to accurately solving complex multi-step mathematical problems. In this paper, we present an innovative process-oriented math verifier called \textbf{Math-Shepherd}, which assigns a reward score to each step of the LLM's outputs on math problems. The training of Math-Shepherd is achieved using automatically constructed process-wise supervision data, breaking the bottleneck of heavy reliance on manual annotation in existing work. With the guidance of Math-Shepherd, a series of open-source LLMs demonstrate exceptional performance. Among them, DeepSeek 67B \citep{DeepSeek-llm} stands out by achieving accuracy rates of 93.3\% on the GSM8K dataset and 48.1\% on the MATH dataset, without external enhancement such as tool usage. Our Math-Shepherd also outperforms the self-consistency method and other existing verification models. We believe that automatic process supervision holds significant potential for the future evolution of LLMs.

Recently audio-visual speech recognition (AVSR), which better leverages video modality as additional information to extend automatic speech recognition (ASR), has shown promising results in complex acoustic environments. However, there is still substantial space to improve as complex computation of visual modules and ineffective fusion of audio-visual modalities. To eliminate these drawbacks, we propose a down-up sampling-based AVSR model (Hourglass-AVSR) to enjoy high efficiency and performance, whose time length is scaled during the intermediate processing, resembling an hourglass. Firstly, we propose a context and residual aware video upsampling approach to improve the recognition performance, which utilizes contextual information from visual representations and captures residual information between adjacent video frames. Secondly, we introduce a visual-audio alignment approach during the upsampling by explicitly incorporating boundary constraint loss. Besides, we propose a cross-layer attention fusion to capture the modality dependencies within each visual encoder layer. Experiments conducted on the MISP-AVSR dataset reveal that our proposed Hourglass-AVSR model outperforms ASR model by 12.9% and 20.8% relative concatenated minimum permutation character error rate (cpCER) reduction on far-field and middle-field test sets, respectively. Moreover, compared to other state-of-the-art AVSR models, our model exhibits the highest improvement in cpCER for the visual module. Furthermore, on the benefit of our down-up sampling approach, Hourglass-AVSR model reduces 54.2% overall computation costs with minor performance degradation.

While large language models (LLMs) have demonstrated remarkable capabilities across a range of downstream tasks, a significant concern revolves around their propensity to exhibit hallucinations: LLMs occasionally generate content that diverges from the user input, contradicts previously generated context, or misaligns with established world knowledge. This phenomenon poses a substantial challenge to the reliability of LLMs in real-world scenarios. In this paper, we survey recent efforts on the detection, explanation, and mitigation of hallucination, with an emphasis on the unique challenges posed by LLMs. We present taxonomies of the LLM hallucination phenomena and evaluation benchmarks, analyze existing approaches aiming at mitigating LLM hallucination, and discuss potential directions for future research.

Multi-agent influence diagrams (MAIDs) are a popular form of graphical model that, for certain classes of games, have been shown to offer key complexity and explainability advantages over traditional extensive form game (EFG) representations. In this paper, we extend previous work on MAIDs by introducing the concept of a MAID subgame, as well as subgame perfect and trembling hand perfect equilibrium refinements. We then prove several equivalence results between MAIDs and EFGs. Finally, we describe an open source implementation for reasoning about MAIDs and computing their equilibria.
