In this paper, we plan to show an eigenvalue algorithm for block Hessenberg matrices by using the idea of non-commutative integrable systems and matrix-valued orthogonal polynomials. We introduce adjacent families of matrix-valued $\theta$-deformed bi-orthogonal polynomials, and derive corresponding discrete non-commutative hungry Toda lattice from discrete spectral transformations for polynomials. It is shown that this discrete system can be used as a pre-precessing algorithm for block Hessenberg matrices. Besides, some convergence analysis and numerical examples of this algorithm are presented.

To obtain fast solutions for governing physical equations in solid mechanics, we introduce a method that integrates the core ideas of the finite element method with physics-informed neural networks and concept of neural operators. This approach generalizes and enhances each method, learning the parametric solution for mechanical problems without relying on data from other resources (e.g. other numerical solvers). We propose directly utilizing the available discretized weak form in finite element packages to construct the loss functions algebraically, thereby demonstrating the ability to find solutions even in the presence of sharp discontinuities. Our focus is on micromechanics as an example, where knowledge of deformation and stress fields for a given heterogeneous microstructure is crucial for further design applications. The primary parameter under investigation is the Young's modulus distribution within the heterogeneous solid system. Our investigations reveal that physics-based training yields higher accuracy compared to purely data-driven approaches for unseen microstructures. Additionally, we offer two methods to directly improve the process of obtaining high-resolution solutions, avoiding the need to use basic interpolation techniques. First is based on an autoencoder approach to enhance the efficiency for calculation on high resolution grid point. Next, Fourier-based parametrization is utilized to address complex 2D and 3D problems in micromechanics. The latter idea aims to represent complex microstructures efficiently using Fourier coefficients. Comparisons with other well-known operator learning algorithms, further emphasize the advantages of the newly proposed method.

Symplectic integrators are widely implemented numerical integrators for Hamiltonian mechanics, which preserve the Hamiltonian structure (symplecticity) of the system. Although the symplectic integrator does not conserve the energy of the system, it is well known that there exists a conserving modified Hamiltonian, called the shadow Hamiltonian. For the Nambu mechanics, which is a kind of generalized Hamiltonian mechanics, we can also construct structure-preserving integrators by the same procedure used to construct the symplectic integrators. In the structure-preserving integrator, however, the existence of shadow Hamiltonians is nontrivial. This is because the Nambu mechanics is driven by multiple Hamiltonians and it is nontrivial whether the time evolution by the integrator can be cast into the Nambu mechanical time evolution driven by multiple shadow Hamiltonians. In this paper we present a general procedure to calculate the shadow Hamiltonians of structure-preserving integrators for Nambu mechanics, and give an example where the shadow Hamiltonians exist. This is the first attempt to determine the concrete forms of the shadow Hamiltonians for a Nambu mechanical system. We show that the fundamental identity, which corresponds to the Jacobi identity in Hamiltonian mechanics, plays an important role in calculating the shadow Hamiltonians using the Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff formula. It turns out that the resulting shadow Hamiltonians have indefinite forms depending on how the fundamental identities are used. This is not a technical artifact, because the exact shadow Hamiltonians obtained independently have the same indefiniteness.

We study an interacting particle method (IPM) for computing the large deviation rate function of entropy production for diffusion processes, with emphasis on the vanishing-noise limit and high dimensions. The crucial ingredient to obtain the rate function is the computation of the principal eigenvalue $\lambda$ of elliptic, non-self-adjoint operators. We show that this principal eigenvalue can be approximated in terms of the spectral radius of a discretized evolution operator obtained from an operator splitting scheme and an Euler--Maruyama scheme with a small time step size, and we show that this spectral radius can be accessed through a large number of iterations of this discretized semigroup, suitable for the IPM. The IPM applies naturally to problems in unbounded domains, scales easily to high dimensions, and adapts to singular behaviors in the vanishing-noise limit. We show numerical examples in dimensions up to 16. The numerical results show that our numerical approximation of $\lambda$ converges to the analytical vanishing-noise limit within visual tolerance with a fixed number of particles and a fixed time step size. Our paper appears to be the first one to obtain numerical results of principal eigenvalue problems for non-self-adjoint operators in such high dimensions.

Extremiles provide a generalization of quantiles which are not only robust, but also have an intrinsic link with extreme value theory. This paper introduces an extremile regression model tailored for functional covariate spaces. The estimation procedure turns out to be a weighted version of local linear scalar-on-function regression, where now a double kernel approach plays a crucial role. Asymptotic expressions for the bias and variance are established, applicable to both decreasing bandwidth sequences and automatically selected bandwidths. The methodology is then investigated in detail through a simulation study. Furthermore, we highlight the applicability of the model through the analysis of data sourced from the CH2018 Swiss climate scenarios project, offering insights into its ability to serve as a modern tool to quantify climate behaviour.

In this paper, to address the optimization problem on a compact matrix manifold, we introduce a novel algorithmic framework called the Transformed Gradient Projection (TGP) algorithm, using the projection onto this compact matrix manifold. Compared with the existing algorithms, the key innovation in our approach lies in the utilization of a new class of search directions and various stepsizes, including the Armijo, nonmonotone Armijo, and fixed stepsizes, to guide the selection of the next iterate. Our framework offers flexibility by encompassing the classical gradient projection algorithms as special cases, and intersecting the retraction-based line-search algorithms. Notably, our focus is on the Stiefel or Grassmann manifold, revealing that many existing algorithms in the literature can be seen as specific instances within our proposed framework, and this algorithmic framework also induces several new special cases. Then, we conduct a thorough exploration of the convergence properties of these algorithms, considering various search directions and stepsizes. To achieve this, we extensively analyze the geometric properties of the projection onto compact matrix manifolds, allowing us to extend classical inequalities related to retractions from the literature. Building upon these insights, we establish the weak convergence, convergence rate, and global convergence of TGP algorithms under three distinct stepsizes. In cases where the compact matrix manifold is the Stiefel or Grassmann manifold, our convergence results either encompass or surpass those found in the literature. Finally, through a series of numerical experiments, we observe that the TGP algorithms, owing to their increased flexibility in choosing search directions, outperform classical gradient projection and retraction-based line-search algorithms in several scenarios.

This paper studies the convergence of a spatial semidiscretization of a three-dimensional stochastic Allen-Cahn equation with multiplicative noise. For non-smooth initial values, the regularity of the mild solution is investigated, and an error estimate is derived with the spatial $ L^2 $-norm. For smooth initial values, two error estimates with the general spatial $ L^q $-norms are established.

Identifiability of statistical models is a key notion in unsupervised representation learning. Recent work of nonlinear independent component analysis (ICA) employs auxiliary data and has established identifiable conditions. This paper proposes a statistical model of two latent vectors with single auxiliary data generalizing nonlinear ICA, and establishes various identifiability conditions. Unlike previous work, the two latent vectors in the proposed model can have arbitrary dimensions, and this property enables us to reveal an insightful dimensionality relation among two latent vectors and auxiliary data in identifiability conditions. Furthermore, surprisingly, we prove that the indeterminacies of the proposed model has the same as \emph{linear} ICA under certain conditions: The elements in the latent vector can be recovered up to their permutation and scales. Next, we apply the identifiability theory to a statistical model for graph data. As a result, one of the identifiability conditions includes an appealing implication: Identifiability of the statistical model could depend on the maximum value of link weights in graph data. Then, we propose a practical method for identifiable graph embedding. Finally, we numerically demonstrate that the proposed method well-recovers the latent vectors and model identifiability clearly depends on the maximum value of link weights, which supports the implication of our theoretical results

Given a finite set of matrices with integer entries, the matrix mortality problem asks if there exists a product of these matrices equal to the zero matrix. We consider a special case of this problem where all entries of the matrices are nonnegative. This case is equivalent to the NFA mortality problem, which, given an NFA, asks for a word $w$ such that the image of every state under $w$ is the empty set. The size of the alphabet of the NFA is then equal to the number of matrices in the set. We study the length of shortest such words depending on the size of the alphabet. We show that this length for an NFA with $n$ states can be at least $2^n - 1$, $2^{(n - 4)/2}$ and $2^{(n - 2)/3}$ if the size of the alphabet is, respectively, equal to $n$, three and two.

Temporal reasoning with conditionals is more complex than both classical temporal reasoning and reasoning with timeless conditionals, and can lead to some rather counter-intuitive conclusions. For instance, Aristotle's famous "Sea Battle Tomorrow" puzzle leads to a fatalistic conclusion: whether there will be a sea battle tomorrow or not, but that is necessarily the case now. We propose a branching-time logic LTC to formalise reasoning about temporal conditionals and provide that logic with adequate formal semantics. The logic LTC extends the Nexttime fragment of CTL*, with operators for model updates, restricting the domain to only future moments where antecedent is still possible to satisfy. We provide formal semantics for these operators that implements the restrictor interpretation of antecedents of temporalized conditionals, by suitably restricting the domain of discourse. As a motivating example, we demonstrate that a naturally formalised in our logic version of the `Sea Battle' argument renders it unsound, thereby providing a solution to the problem with fatalist conclusion that it entails, because its underlying reasoning per cases argument no longer applies when these cases are treated not as material implications but as temporal conditionals. On the technical side, we analyze the semantics of LTC and provide a series of reductions of LTC-formulae, first recursively eliminating the dynamic update operators and then the path quantifiers in such formulae. Using these reductions we obtain a sound and complete axiomatization for LTC, and reduce its decision problem to that of the modal logic KD.
