An autonomous mobile robot system is a distributed system consisting of mobile computational entities (called robots) that autonomously and repeatedly perform three operations: Look, Compute, and Move. Various problems related to autonomous mobile robots, such as gathering, pattern formation, or flocking, have been extensively studied to understand the relationship between each robot's capabilities and the solvability of these problems. In this study, we focus on the complete visibility problem, which involves relocating all the robots on an infinite grid plane such that each robot is visible to every other robot. We assume that each robot is a luminous robot (i.e., has a light with a constant number of colors) and opaque (not transparent). In this paper, we propose an algorithm to achieve complete visibility when a set of robots is given. The algorithm ensures that complete visibility is achieved even when robots operate asynchronously and have no knowledge of the total number of robots on the grid plane using only two colors.
The emergence of large-scale wireless networks with partially-observable and time-varying dynamics has imposed new challenges on the design of optimal control policies. This paper studies efficient scheduling algorithms for wireless networks subject to generalized interference constraint, where mean arrival and mean service rates are unknown and non-stationary. This model exemplifies realistic edge devices' characteristics of wireless communication in modern networks. We propose a novel algorithm termed MW-UCB for generalized wireless network scheduling, which is based on the Max-Weight policy and leverages the Sliding-Window Upper-Confidence Bound to learn the channels' statistics under non-stationarity. MW-UCB is provably throughput-optimal under mild assumptions on the variability of mean service rates. Specifically, as long as the total variation in mean service rates over any time period grows sub-linearly in time, we show that MW-UCB can achieve the stability region arbitrarily close to the stability region of the class of policies with full knowledge of the channel statistics. Extensive simulations validate our theoretical results and demonstrate the favorable performance of MW-UCB.
Developing robot controllers capable of achieving dexterous nonprehensile manipulation, such as pushing an object on a table, is challenging. The underactuated and hybrid-dynamics nature of the problem, further complicated by the uncertainty resulting from the frictional interactions, requires sophisticated control behaviors. Reinforcement Learning (RL) is a powerful framework for developing such robot controllers. However, previous RL literature addressing the nonprehensile pushing task achieves low accuracy, non-smooth trajectories, and only simple motions, i.e. without rotation of the manipulated object. We conjecture that previously used unimodal exploration strategies fail to capture the inherent hybrid-dynamics of the task, arising from the different possible contact interaction modes between the robot and the object, such as sticking, sliding, and separation. In this work, we propose a multimodal exploration approach through categorical distributions, which enables us to train planar pushing RL policies for arbitrary starting and target object poses, i.e. positions and orientations, and with improved accuracy. We show that the learned policies are robust to external disturbances and observation noise, and scale to tasks with multiple pushers. Furthermore, we validate the transferability of the learned policies, trained entirely in simulation, to a physical robot hardware using the KUKA iiwa robot arm. Visual-inertial localization is a key problem in computer vision and robotics applications such as virtual reality, self-driving cars, and aerial vehicles. The goal is to estimate an accurate pose of an object when either the environment or the dynamics are known. Absolute pose regression (APR) techniques directly regress the absolute pose from an image input in a known scene using convolutional and spatio-temporal networks. Odometry methods perform relative pose regression (RPR) that predicts the relative pose from a known object dynamic (visual or inertial inputs). The localization task can be improved by retrieving information from both data sources for a cross-modal setup, which is a challenging problem due to contradictory tasks. In this work, we conduct a benchmark to evaluate deep multimodal fusion based on pose graph optimization and attention networks. Auxiliary and Bayesian learning are utilized for the APR task. We show accuracy improvements for the APR-RPR task and for the RPR-RPR task for aerial vehicles and hand-held devices. We conduct experiments on the EuRoC MAV and PennCOSYVIO datasets and record and evaluate a novel industry dataset.
Wind resistance control is an essential feature for quadcopters to maintain their position to avoid deviation from target position and prevent collisions with obstacles. Conventionally, cascaded PID controller is used for the control of quadcopters for its simplicity and ease of tuning its parameters. However, it is weak against wind disturbances and the quadcopter can easily deviate from target position. In this work, we propose a residual reinforcement learning based approach to build a wind resistance controller of a quadcopter. By learning only the residual that compensates the disturbance, we can continue using the cascaded PID controller as the base controller of the quadcopter but improve its performance against wind disturbances. To avoid unexpected crashes and destructions of quadcopters, our method does not require real hardware for data collection and training. The controller is trained only on a simulator and directly applied to the target hardware without extra finetuning process. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach through various experiments including an experiment in an outdoor scene with wind speed greater than 13 m/s. Despite its simplicity, our controller reduces the position deviation by approximately 50% compared to the quadcopter controlled with the conventional cascaded PID controller. Furthermore, trained controller is robust and preserves its performance even though the quadcopter's mass and propeller's lift coefficient is changed between 50% to 150% from original training time.
Automatic defect detection for 3D printing processes, which shares many characteristics with change detection problems, is a vital step for quality control of 3D printed products. However, there are some critical challenges in the current state of practice. First, existing methods for computer vision-based process monitoring typically work well only under specific camera viewpoints and lighting situations, requiring expensive pre-processing, alignment, and camera setups. Second, many defect detection techniques are specific to pre-defined defect patterns and/or print schematics. In this work, we approach the defect detection problem using a novel Semi-Siamese deep learning model that directly compares a reference schematic of the desired print and a camera image of the achieved print. The model then solves an image segmentation problem, precisely identifying the locations of defects of different types with respect to the reference schematic. Our model is designed to enable comparison of heterogeneous images from different domains while being robust against perturbations in the imaging setup such as different camera angles and illumination. Crucially, we show that our simple architecture, which is easy to pre-train for enhanced performance on new datasets, outperforms more complex state-of-the-art approaches based on generative adversarial networks and transformers. Using our model, defect localization predictions can be made in less than half a second per layer using a standard MacBook Pro while achieving an F1-score of more than 0.9, demonstrating the efficacy of using our method for in-situ defect detection in 3D printing.
For Industry 4.0 Revolution, cooperative autonomous mobility systems are widely used based on multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL). However, the MARL-based algorithms suffer from huge parameter utilization and convergence difficulties with many agents. To tackle these problems, a quantum MARL (QMARL) algorithm based on the concept of actor-critic network is proposed, which is beneficial in terms of scalability, to deal with the limitations in the noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) era. Additionally, our QMARL is also beneficial in terms of efficient parameter utilization and fast convergence due to quantum supremacy. Note that the reward in our QMARL is defined as task precision over computation time in multiple agents, thus, multi-agent cooperation can be realized. For further improvement, an additional technique for scalability is proposed, which is called projection value measure (PVM). Based on PVM, our proposed QMARL can achieve the highest reward, by reducing the action dimension into a logarithmic-scale. Finally, we can conclude that our proposed QMARL with PVM outperforms the other algorithms in terms of efficient parameter utilization, fast convergence, and scalability.
Autonomic computing investigates how systems can achieve (user) specified control outcomes on their own, without the intervention of a human operator. Autonomic computing fundamentals have been substantially influenced by those of control theory for closed and open-loop systems. In practice, complex systems may exhibit a number of concurrent and inter-dependent control loops. Despite research into autonomic models for managing computer resources, ranging from individual resources (e.g., web servers) to a resource ensemble (e.g., multiple resources within a data center), research into integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) to improve resource autonomy and performance at scale continues to be a fundamental challenge. The integration of AI/ML to achieve such autonomic and self-management of systems can be achieved at different levels of granularity, from full to human-in-the-loop automation. In this article, leading academics, researchers, practitioners, engineers, and scientists in the fields of cloud computing, AI/ML, and quantum computing join to discuss current research and potential future directions for these fields. Further, we discuss challenges and opportunities for leveraging AI and ML in next generation computing for emerging computing paradigms, including cloud, fog, edge, serverless and quantum computing environments.
Federated learning is a new distributed machine learning framework, where a bunch of heterogeneous clients collaboratively train a model without sharing training data. In this work, we consider a practical and ubiquitous issue in federated learning: intermittent client availability, where the set of eligible clients may change during the training process. Such an intermittent client availability model would significantly deteriorate the performance of the classical Federated Averaging algorithm (FedAvg for short). We propose a simple distributed non-convex optimization algorithm, called Federated Latest Averaging (FedLaAvg for short), which leverages the latest gradients of all clients, even when the clients are not available, to jointly update the global model in each iteration. Our theoretical analysis shows that FedLaAvg attains the convergence rate of $O(1/(N^{1/4} T^{1/2}))$, achieving a sublinear speedup with respect to the total number of clients. We implement and evaluate FedLaAvg with the CIFAR-10 dataset. The evaluation results demonstrate that FedLaAvg indeed reaches a sublinear speedup and achieves 4.23% higher test accuracy than FedAvg.
Object detection typically assumes that training and test data are drawn from an identical distribution, which, however, does not always hold in practice. Such a distribution mismatch will lead to a significant performance drop. In this work, we aim to improve the cross-domain robustness of object detection. We tackle the domain shift on two levels: 1) the image-level shift, such as image style, illumination, etc, and 2) the instance-level shift, such as object appearance, size, etc. We build our approach based on the recent state-of-the-art Faster R-CNN model, and design two domain adaptation components, on image level and instance level, to reduce the domain discrepancy. The two domain adaptation components are based on H-divergence theory, and are implemented by learning a domain classifier in adversarial training manner. The domain classifiers on different levels are further reinforced with a consistency regularization to learn a domain-invariant region proposal network (RPN) in the Faster R-CNN model. We evaluate our newly proposed approach using multiple datasets including Cityscapes, KITTI, SIM10K, etc. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed approach for robust object detection in various domain shift scenarios.
Detecting carried objects is one of the requirements for developing systems to reason about activities involving people and objects. We present an approach to detect carried objects from a single video frame with a novel method that incorporates features from multiple scales. Initially, a foreground mask in a video frame is segmented into multi-scale superpixels. Then the human-like regions in the segmented area are identified by matching a set of extracted features from superpixels against learned features in a codebook. A carried object probability map is generated using the complement of the matching probabilities of superpixels to human-like regions and background information. A group of superpixels with high carried object probability and strong edge support is then merged to obtain the shape of the carried object. We applied our method to two challenging datasets, and results show that our method is competitive with or better than the state-of-the-art.
