With the aim of further enabling the exploitation of impacts in robotic manipulation, a control framework is presented that directly tackles the challenges posed by tracking control of robotic manipulators that are tasked to perform nominally simultaneous impacts associated to multiple contact points. To this end, we extend the framework of reference spreading, which uses an extended ante- and post-impact reference coherent with a rigid impact map, determined under the assumption of an inelastic simultaneous impact. In practice, the robot will not reside exactly on the reference at the impact moment; as a result a sequence of impacts at the different contact points will typically occur. Our new approach extends reference spreading in this context via the introduction of an additional interim control mode. In this mode, a torque command is still based on the ante-impact reference with the goal of reaching the target contact state, but velocity feedback is disabled as this can be potentially harmful due to rapid velocity changes. With an eye towards real implementation, the approach is formulated using a quadratic programming (QP) control framework and is validated using numerical simulations both on a rigid robot model and on a realistic robot model with flexible joints.

This work presents a distributed algorithm for resolving cooperative multi-vehicle conflicts in highly constrained spaces. By formulating the conflict resolution problem as a Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning (RL) problem, we can train a policy offline to drive the vehicles towards their destinations safely and efficiently in a simplified discrete environment. During the online execution, each vehicle first simulates the interaction among vehicles with the trained policy to obtain its strategy, which is used to guide the computation of a reference trajectory. A distributed Model Predictive Controller (MPC) is then proposed to track the reference while avoiding collisions. The preliminary results show that the combination of RL and distributed MPC has the potential to guide vehicles to resolve conflicts safely and smoothly while being less computationally demanding than the centralized approach.

Reliability is one of the major design criteria in Cyber-Physical Systems (CPSs). This is because of the existence of some critical applications in CPSs and their failure is catastrophic. Therefore, employing strong error detection and correction mechanisms in CPSs is inevitable. CPSs are composed of a variety of units, including sensors, networks, and microcontrollers. Each of these units is probable to be in a faulty state at any time and the occurred fault can result in erroneous output. The fault may cause the units of CPS to malfunction and eventually crash. Traditional fault-tolerant approaches include redundancy time, hardware, information, and/or software. However, these approaches impose significant overheads besides their low error coverage, which limits their applicability. In addition, the interval between error occurrence and detection is too long in these approaches. In this paper, based on Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL), a new error detection approach is proposed that not only detects errors with high accuracy but also can perform error detection at the moment due to very low inference time. The proposed approach can categorize different types of errors from normal data and predict whether the system will fail. The evaluation results illustrate that the proposed approach has improved more than 2x in terms of accuracy and more than 5x in terms of inference time compared to other approaches.

This study explores the problem of Multi-Agent Path Finding with continuous and stochastic travel times whose probability distribution is unknown. Our purpose is to manage a group of automated robots that provide package delivery services in a building where pedestrians and a wide variety of robots coexist, such as delivery services in office buildings, hospitals, and apartments. It is often the case with these real-world applications that the time required for the robots to traverse a corridor takes a continuous value and is randomly distributed, and the prior knowledge of the probability distribution of the travel time is limited. Multi-Agent Path Finding has been widely studied and applied to robot management systems; however, automating the robot operation in such environments remains difficult. We propose 1) online re-planning to update the action plan of robots while it is executed, and 2) parameter update to estimate the probability distribution of travel time using Bayesian inference as the delay is observed. We use a greedy heuristic to obtain solutions in a limited computation time. Through simulations, we empirically compare the performance of our method to those of existing methods in terms of the conflict probability and the actual travel time of robots. The simulation results indicate that the proposed method can find travel paths with at least 50% fewer conflicts and a shorter actual total travel time than existing methods. The proposed method requires a small number of trials to achieve the performance because the parameter update is prioritized on the important edges for path planning, thereby satisfying the requirements of quick implementation of robust planning of automated delivery services.

Algebraic effects and handlers are a powerful abstraction to build non-local control-flow mechanisms such as resumable exceptions, lightweight threads, co-routines, generators, and asynchronous I/O. All of such features have very evolved semantics, hence they pose very interesting challenges to deductive verification techniques. In fact, there are very few proposed techniques to deductively verify programs featuring these constructs, even fewer when it comes to automated proofs. In this paper, we outline some of the currently available techniques for the verification of programs with algebraic effects. We then build off them to create a mostly automated verification framework by extending Cameleer, a tool which verifies OCaml code using GOSPEL and Why3. This framework embeds the behavior of effects and handlers using exceptions and defunctionalized functions.

We consider the lossy quantum source coding problem where the task is to compress a given quantum source below its von Neumann entropy. Inspired by the duality connections between the rate-distortion and channel coding problems in the classical setting, we propose a new formulation for the lossy quantum source coding problem. This formulation differs from the existing quantum rate-distortion theory in two aspects. Firstly, we require that the reconstruction of the compressed quantum source fulfill a global error constraint as opposed to the sample-wise local error criterion used in the standard rate-distortion setting. Secondly, instead of a distortion observable, we employ the notion of a backward quantum channel, which we refer to as a "posterior reference map", to measure the reconstruction error. Using these, we characterize the asymptotic performance limit of the lossy quantum source coding problem in terms of single-letter coherent information of the given posterior reference map. We demonstrate a protocol to encode (at the specified rate) and decode, with the reconstruction satisfying the provided global error criterion, and therefore achieving the asymptotic performance limit. The protocol is constructed by decomposing coherent information as a difference of two Holevo information quantities, inspired from prior works in quantum communication problems. To further support the findings, we develop analogous formulations for the quantum-classical and classical variants and express the asymptotic performance limit in terms of single-letter mutual information quantities with respect to appropriately defined channels analogous to posterior reference maps. We also provide various examples for the three formulations, and shed light on their connection to the standard rate-distortion formulation wherever possible.

The proliferation of automated data collection schemes and the advances in sensorics are increasing the amount of data we are able to monitor in real-time. However, given the high annotation costs and the time required by quality inspections, data is often available in an unlabeled form. This is fostering the use of active learning for the development of soft sensors and predictive models. In production, instead of performing random inspections to obtain product information, labels are collected by evaluating the information content of the unlabeled data. Several query strategy frameworks for regression have been proposed in the literature but most of the focus has been dedicated to the static pool-based scenario. In this work, we propose a new strategy for the stream-based scenario, where instances are sequentially offered to the learner, which must instantaneously decide whether to perform the quality check to obtain the label or discard the instance. The approach is inspired by the optimal experimental design theory and the iterative aspect of the decision-making process is tackled by setting a threshold on the informativeness of the unlabeled data points. The proposed approach is evaluated using numerical simulations and the Tennessee Eastman Process simulator. The results confirm that selecting the examples suggested by the proposed algorithm allows for a faster reduction in the prediction error.

Model-based next state prediction and state value prediction are slow to converge. To address these challenges, we do the following: i) Instead of a neural network, we do model-based planning using a parallel memory retrieval system (which we term the slow mechanism); ii) Instead of learning state values, we guide the agent's actions using goal-directed exploration, by using a neural network to choose the next action given the current state and the goal state (which we term the fast mechanism). The goal-directed exploration is trained online using hippocampal replay of visited states and future imagined states every single time step, leading to fast and efficient training. Empirical studies show that our proposed method has a 92% solve rate across 100 episodes in a dynamically changing grid world, significantly outperforming state-of-the-art actor critic mechanisms such as PPO (54%), TRPO (50%) and A2C (24%). Ablation studies demonstrate that both mechanisms are crucial. We posit that the future of Reinforcement Learning (RL) will be to model goals and sub-goals for various tasks, and plan it out in a goal-directed memory-based approach.

The ability to accurately predict the opponent's behavior is central to the safety and efficiency of robotic systems in interactive settings, such as human-robot interaction and multi-robot teaming tasks. Unfortunately, robots often lack access to key information on which these predictions may hinge, such as opponent's goals, attention, and willingness to cooperate. Dual control theory addresses this challenge by treating unknown parameters of a predictive model as hidden states and inferring their values at runtime using information gathered during system operation. While able to optimally and automatically trade off exploration and exploitation, dual control is computationally intractable for general interactive motion planning. In this paper, we present a novel algorithmic approach to enable active uncertainty reduction for interactive motion planning based on the implicit dual control paradigm. Our approach relies on sampling-based approximation of stochastic dynamic programming, leading to a model predictive control problem. The resulting policy is shown to preserve the dual control effect for a broad class of predictive models with both continuous and categorical uncertainty. To ensure the safe operation of the interacting agents, we leverage a supervisory control scheme, oftentimes referred to as ``shielding'', which overrides the ego agent's dual control policy with a safety fallback strategy when a safety-critical event is imminent. We then augment the dual control framework with an improved variant of the recently proposed shielding-aware robust planning scheme, which proactively balances the nominal planning performance with the risk of high-cost emergency maneuvers triggered by low-probability opponent's behaviors. We demonstrate the efficacy of our approach with both simulated driving examples and hardware experiments using 1/10 scale autonomous vehicles.

Humans have a natural instinct to identify unknown object instances in their environments. The intrinsic curiosity about these unknown instances aids in learning about them, when the corresponding knowledge is eventually available. This motivates us to propose a novel computer vision problem called: `Open World Object Detection', where a model is tasked to: 1) identify objects that have not been introduced to it as `unknown', without explicit supervision to do so, and 2) incrementally learn these identified unknown categories without forgetting previously learned classes, when the corresponding labels are progressively received. We formulate the problem, introduce a strong evaluation protocol and provide a novel solution, which we call ORE: Open World Object Detector, based on contrastive clustering and energy based unknown identification. Our experimental evaluation and ablation studies analyze the efficacy of ORE in achieving Open World objectives. As an interesting by-product, we find that identifying and characterizing unknown instances helps to reduce confusion in an incremental object detection setting, where we achieve state-of-the-art performance, with no extra methodological effort. We hope that our work will attract further research into this newly identified, yet crucial research direction.

Verifiability is one of the core editing principles in Wikipedia, where editors are encouraged to provide citations for the added statements. Statements can be any arbitrary piece of text, ranging from a sentence up to a paragraph. However, in many cases, citations are either outdated, missing, or link to non-existing references (e.g. dead URL, moved content etc.). In total, 20\% of the cases such citations refer to news articles and represent the second most cited source. Even in cases where citations are provided, there are no explicit indicators for the span of a citation for a given piece of text. In addition to issues related with the verifiability principle, many Wikipedia entity pages are incomplete, with relevant information that is already available in online news sources missing. Even for the already existing citations, there is often a delay between the news publication time and the reference time. In this thesis, we address the aforementioned issues and propose automated approaches that enforce the verifiability principle in Wikipedia, and suggest relevant and missing news references for further enriching Wikipedia entity pages.
