Reachability analysis plays a central role in system design and verification. The reachability problem, denoted $\Diamond^J\,\Phi$, asks whether the system will meet the property $\Phi$ after some time in a given time interval $J$. Recently, it has been considered on a novel kind of real-time systems -- quantum continuous-time Markov chains (QCTMCs), and embedded into the model-checking algorithm. In this paper, we further study the repeated reachability problem in QCTMCs, denoted $\Box^I\,\Diamond^J\,\Phi$, which concerns whether the system starting from each \emph{absolute} time in $I$ will meet the property $\Phi$ after some coming \emph{relative} time in $J$. First of all, we reduce it to the real root isolation of a class of real-valued functions (exponential polynomials), whose solvability is conditional to Schanuel's conjecture being true. To speed up the procedure, we employ the strategy of sampling. The original problem is shown to be equivalent to the existence of a finite collection of satisfying samples. We then present a sample-driven procedure, which can effectively refine the sample space after each time of sampling, no matter whether the sample itself is successful or conflicting. The improvement on efficiency is validated by randomly generated instances. Hence the proposed method would be promising to attack the repeated reachability problems together with checking other $\omega$-regular properties in a wide scope of real-time systems.
Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) have displayed considerable promise in graph representation learning across various applications. The core learning process requires the initialization of model weight matrices within each GNN layer, which is typically accomplished via classic initialization methods such as Xavier initialization. However, these methods were originally motivated to stabilize the variance of hidden embeddings and gradients across layers of Feedforward Neural Networks (FNNs) and Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) to avoid vanishing gradients and maintain steady information flow. In contrast, within the GNN context classical initializations disregard the impact of the input graph structure and message passing on variance. In this paper, we analyze the variance of forward and backward propagation across GNN layers and show that the variance instability of GNN initializations comes from the combined effect of the activation function, hidden dimension, graph structure and message passing. To better account for these influence factors, we propose a new initialization method for Variance Instability Reduction within GNN Optimization (Virgo), which naturally tends to equate forward and backward variances across successive layers. We conduct comprehensive experiments on 15 datasets to show that Virgo can lead to superior model performance and more stable variance at initialization on node classification, link prediction and graph classification tasks. SOTA multiagent reinforcement algorithms distinguish themselves in many ways from their single-agent equivalences. However, most of them still totally inherit the single-agent exploration-exploitation strategy. Naively inheriting this strategy from single-agent algorithms causes potential collaboration failures, in which the agents blindly follow mainstream behaviors and reject taking minority responsibility. We name this problem the Responsibility Diffusion (RD) as it shares similarities with a same-name social psychology effect. In this work, we start by theoretically analyzing the cause of this RD problem, which can be traced back to the exploration-exploitation dilemma of multiagent systems (especially large-scale multiagent systems). We address this RD problem by proposing a Policy Resonance (PR) approach which modifies the collaborative exploration strategy of agents by refactoring the joint agent policy while keeping individual policies approximately invariant. Next, we show that SOTA algorithms can equip this approach to promote the collaborative performance of agents in complex cooperative tasks. Experiments are performed in multiple test benchmark tasks to illustrate the effectiveness of this approach.
While Large Language Models (LLMs) display versatile functionality, they continue to generate harmful, biased, and toxic content, as demonstrated by the prevalence of human-designed jailbreaks. In this work, we present Tree of Attacks with Pruning (TAP), an automated method for generating jailbreaks that only requires black-box access to the target LLM. TAP utilizes an LLM to iteratively refine candidate (attack) prompts using tree-of-thoughts reasoning until one of the generated prompts jailbreaks the target. Crucially, before sending prompts to the target, TAP assesses them and prunes the ones unlikely to result in jailbreaks. Using tree-of-thought reasoning allows TAP to navigate a large search space of prompts and pruning reduces the total number of queries sent to the target. In empirical evaluations, we observe that TAP generates prompts that jailbreak state-of-the-art LLMs (including GPT4 and GPT4-Turbo) for more than 80% of the prompts using only a small number of queries. This significantly improves upon the previous state-of-the-art black-box method for generating jailbreaks.
Various heuristic objectives for modeling hand-object interaction have been proposed in past work. However, due to the lack of a cohesive framework, these objectives often possess a narrow scope of applicability and are limited by their efficiency or accuracy. In this paper, we propose HandyPriors, a unified and general pipeline for pose estimation in human-object interaction scenes by leveraging recent advances in differentiable physics and rendering. Our approach employs rendering priors to align with input images and segmentation masks along with physics priors to mitigate penetration and relative-sliding across frames. Furthermore, we present two alternatives for hand and object pose estimation. The optimization-based pose estimation achieves higher accuracy, while the filtering-based tracking, which utilizes the differentiable priors as dynamics and observation models, executes faster. We demonstrate that HandyPriors attains comparable or superior results in the pose estimation task, and that the differentiable physics module can predict contact information for pose refinement. We also show that our approach generalizes to perception tasks, including robotic hand manipulation and human-object pose estimation in the wild.
Continuous Time Echo State Networks (CTESN) are a promising yet under-explored surrogate modeling technique for dynamical systems, particularly those governed by stiff Ordinary Differential Equations (ODEs). This paper critically investigates the effects of important hyper-parameters and algorithmic choices on the generalization capability of CTESN surrogates on two benchmark problems governed by Robertson's equations. The method is also used to parametrize the initial conditions of a system of ODEs that realistically model automobile collisions, solving them accurately up to 200 times faster than numerical ODE solvers. The results of this paper demonstrate the ability of CTESN surrogates to accurately predict sharp transients and highly nonlinear system responses, and their utility in speeding up the solution of stiff ODE systems, allowing for their use in diverse applications from accelerated design optimization to digital twins.
Large Language Models (LLMs) represent formidable tools for sequence modeling, boasting an innate capacity for general pattern recognition. Nevertheless, their broader spatial reasoning capabilities, especially applied to numerical trajectory data, remain insufficiently explored. In this paper, we investigate the out-of-the-box performance of ChatGPT-3.5, ChatGPT-4 and Llama 2 7B models when confronted with 3D robotic trajectory data from the CALVIN baseline and associated tasks, including 2D directional and shape labeling. Additionally, we introduce a novel prefix-based prompting mechanism, which yields a 33% improvement on the 3D trajectory data and an increase of up to 10% on SpartQA tasks over zero-shot prompting (with gains for other prompting types as well). The experimentation with 3D trajectory data offers an intriguing glimpse into the manner in which LLMs engage with numerical and spatial information, thus laying a solid foundation for the identification of target areas for future enhancements.
Testing complex simulation models can be expensive and time consuming. Current state-of-the-art methods that explore this problem are fully-supervised; i.e. they require that all examples are labeled. On the other hand, the GenClu system (introduced in this paper) takes a semi-supervised approach; i.e. (a) only a small subset of information is actually labeled (via simulation) and (b) those labels are then spread across the rest of the data. When applied to five open-source simulation models of cyber-physical systems, GenClu's test generation can be multiple orders of magnitude faster than the prior state of the art. Further, when assessed via mutation testing, tests generated by GenClu were as good or better than anything else tested here. Hence, we recommend semi-supervised methods over prior methods (evolutionary search and fully-supervised learning).
Pre-trained Language Models (PLMs) which are trained on large text corpus via self-supervised learning method, have yielded promising performance on various tasks in Natural Language Processing (NLP). However, though PLMs with huge parameters can effectively possess rich knowledge learned from massive training text and benefit downstream tasks at the fine-tuning stage, they still have some limitations such as poor reasoning ability due to the lack of external knowledge. Research has been dedicated to incorporating knowledge into PLMs to tackle these issues. In this paper, we present a comprehensive review of Knowledge-Enhanced Pre-trained Language Models (KE-PLMs) to provide a clear insight into this thriving field. We introduce appropriate taxonomies respectively for Natural Language Understanding (NLU) and Natural Language Generation (NLG) to highlight these two main tasks of NLP. For NLU, we divide the types of knowledge into four categories: linguistic knowledge, text knowledge, knowledge graph (KG), and rule knowledge. The KE-PLMs for NLG are categorized into KG-based and retrieval-based methods. Finally, we point out some promising future directions of KE-PLMs.
The dominating NLP paradigm of training a strong neural predictor to perform one task on a specific dataset has led to state-of-the-art performance in a variety of applications (eg. sentiment classification, span-prediction based question answering or machine translation). However, it builds upon the assumption that the data distribution is stationary, ie. that the data is sampled from a fixed distribution both at training and test time. This way of training is inconsistent with how we as humans are able to learn from and operate within a constantly changing stream of information. Moreover, it is ill-adapted to real-world use cases where the data distribution is expected to shift over the course of a model's lifetime. The first goal of this thesis is to characterize the different forms this shift can take in the context of natural language processing, and propose benchmarks and evaluation metrics to measure its effect on current deep learning architectures. We then proceed to take steps to mitigate the effect of distributional shift on NLP models. To this end, we develop methods based on parametric reformulations of the distributionally robust optimization framework. Empirically, we demonstrate that these approaches yield more robust models as demonstrated on a selection of realistic problems. In the third and final part of this thesis, we explore ways of efficiently adapting existing models to new domains or tasks. Our contribution to this topic takes inspiration from information geometry to derive a new gradient update rule which alleviate catastrophic forgetting issues during adaptation.
Deep neural networks (DNNs) are successful in many computer vision tasks. However, the most accurate DNNs require millions of parameters and operations, making them energy, computation and memory intensive. This impedes the deployment of large DNNs in low-power devices with limited compute resources. Recent research improves DNN models by reducing the memory requirement, energy consumption, and number of operations without significantly decreasing the accuracy. This paper surveys the progress of low-power deep learning and computer vision, specifically in regards to inference, and discusses the methods for compacting and accelerating DNN models. The techniques can be divided into four major categories: (1) parameter quantization and pruning, (2) compressed convolutional filters and matrix factorization, (3) network architecture search, and (4) knowledge distillation. We analyze the accuracy, advantages, disadvantages, and potential solutions to the problems with the techniques in each category. We also discuss new evaluation metrics as a guideline for future research.
