Autonomous driving vehicles aim to free the hands of vehicle operators, helping them to drive easier and faster, meanwhile, improving the safety of driving on the highway or in complex scenarios. Automated driving systems (ADS) are developed and designed in the last several decades to realize fully autonomous driving vehicles (L4 or L5 level). The scale of sampling space leads to the main computational complexity. Therefore, by adjusting the sampling method, the difficulty to solve the real-time motion planning problem could be incrementally reduced. Usually, the Average Sampling Method is taken in Lattice Planner, and Random Sampling Method is chosen for RRT algorithms. However, both of them don't take into consideration the prior information, and focus the sampling space on areas where the optimal trajectory is previously obtained. Therefore, \emph{in this thesis it is proposed an adaptive sampling method to reduce the computation complexity, and achieve faster solutions while keeping the quality of optimal solution unchanged}. The main contribution of this thesis is the significant decrease in the complexity of the optimization problem for motion planning, without sacrificing the quality of the final trajectory output, with the implementation of an Adaptive Sampling method based on Artificial Potential Field (ASAPF). In addition, also the quality and the stability of the trajectory is improved due to the appropriate sampling of the appropriate region to be analyzed.

Performing bimanual tasks with dual robotic setups can drastically increase the impact on industrial and daily life applications. However, performing a bimanual task brings many challenges, like synchronization and coordination of the single-arm policies. This article proposes the Safe, Interactive Movement Primitives Learning (SIMPLe) algorithm, to teach and correct single or dual arm impedance policies directly from human kinesthetic demonstrations. Moreover, it proposes a novel graph encoding of the policy based on Gaussian Process Regression (GPR) where the single-arm motion is guaranteed to converge close to the trajectory and then towards the demonstrated goal. Regulation of the robot stiffness according to the epistemic uncertainty of the policy allows for easily reshaping the motion with human feedback and/or adapting to external perturbations. We tested the SIMPLe algorithm on a real dual-arm setup where the teacher gave separate single-arm demonstrations and then successfully synchronized them only using kinesthetic feedback or where the original bimanual demonstration was locally reshaped to pick a box at a different height.

The increasing connectivity and autonomy of vehicles has led to a growing need for dynamic and real-time adjustments to software and network configurations. Software Defined Vehicles (SDV) have emerged as a potential solution to adapt to changing user needs with continuous updates and onboard reconfigurations to offer infotainment, connected, and background services such as cooperative driving. However, network configuration management in SDVs remains a significant challenge, particularly in the context of shared Ethernet-based in-vehicle networks. Traditional worst-case static configuration methods cannot efficiently allocate network resources while ensuring Quality of Service (QoS) guarantees for each network flow within the physical topology capabilities. In this work, we propose a configuration generation methodology that addresses these limitations by dynamically switching between pre-computed offboard configurations downloaded to the vehicle. Simulation results are presented and future work is discussed.

We examine the disconnect between scholarship and practice in applying machine learning to trust and safety problems, using misinformation detection as a case study. We systematize literature on automated detection of misinformation across a corpus of 270 well-cited papers in the field. We then examine subsets of papers for data and code availability, design missteps, reproducibility, and generalizability. We find significant shortcomings in the literature that call into question claimed performance and practicality. Detection tasks are often meaningfully distinct from the challenges that online services actually face. Datasets and model evaluation are often non-representative of real-world contexts, and evaluation frequently is not independent of model training. Data and code availability is poor. Models do not generalize well to out-of-domain data. Based on these results, we offer recommendations for evaluating machine learning applications to trust and safety problems. Our aim is for future work to avoid the pitfalls that we identify.

Cooperation of automated vehicles (AVs) can improve safety, efficiency and comfort in traffic. Digital twins of Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS) play an important role in monitoring, managing and improving traffic. Computing a live digital twin of traffic requires as input live perception data of preferably multiple connected entities such as automated vehicles (AVs). One such type of perception data are evidential occupancy grid maps (OGMs). The computation of a digital twin involves their spatiotemporal alignment and fusion. In this work, we focus on the spatial alignment, also known as registration, and fusion of evidential occupancy grid maps of multiple automated vehicles. While there exists extensive research on the synchronization and fusion of object-based environment representations, the registration and fusion of OGMs originating from multiple connected vehicles has not been investigated much. We propose a methodology that involves training a deep neural network (DNN) to predict a fused evidential OGM from two OGMs computed by different AVs. The output includes an estimate of the first- and second-order uncertainty. We demonstrate that the DNN trained with synthetic data only outperforms a baseline approach based on coordinate transformation and combination rules also on real-world data. Experimental results on synthetic data show that our approach is able to compensate for spatial misalignments of up to 5 meters and 20 degrees.

Soft robotics is an emergent and swiftly evolving field. Pneumatic actuators are suitable for driving soft robots because of their superior performance. However, their control is not easy due to their hysteresis characteristics. In response to these challenges, we propose an adaptive control method to compensate hysteresis of a soft actuator. Employing a novel dual pneumatic artificial muscle (PAM) bending actuator, the innovative control strategy abates hysteresis effects by dynamically modulating gains within a traditional PID controller corresponding with the predicted motion of the reference trajectory. Through comparative experimental evaluation, we found that the new control method outperforms its conventional counterparts regarding tracking accuracy and response speed. Our work reveals a new direction for advancing control in soft actuators.

In autonomous driving (AD), accurate perception is indispensable to achieving safe and secure driving. Due to its safety-criticality, the security of AD perception has been widely studied. Among different attacks on AD perception, the physical adversarial object evasion attacks are especially severe. However, we find that all existing literature only evaluates their attack effect at the targeted AI component level but not at the system level, i.e., with the entire system semantics and context such as the full AD pipeline. Thereby, this raises a critical research question: can these existing researches effectively achieve system-level attack effects (e.g., traffic rule violations) in the real-world AD context? In this work, we conduct the first measurement study on whether and how effectively the existing designs can lead to system-level effects, especially for the STOP sign-evasion attacks due to their popularity and severity. Our evaluation results show that all the representative prior works cannot achieve any system-level effects. We observe two design limitations in the prior works: 1) physical model-inconsistent object size distribution in pixel sampling and 2) lack of vehicle plant model and AD system model consideration. Then, we propose SysAdv, a novel system-driven attack design in the AD context and our evaluation results show that the system-level effects can be significantly improved, i.e., the violation rate increases by around 70%.

Understanding causality helps to structure interventions to achieve specific goals and enables predictions under interventions. With the growing importance of learning causal relationships, causal discovery tasks have transitioned from using traditional methods to infer potential causal structures from observational data to the field of pattern recognition involved in deep learning. The rapid accumulation of massive data promotes the emergence of causal search methods with brilliant scalability. Existing summaries of causal discovery methods mainly focus on traditional methods based on constraints, scores and FCMs, there is a lack of perfect sorting and elaboration for deep learning-based methods, also lacking some considers and exploration of causal discovery methods from the perspective of variable paradigms. Therefore, we divide the possible causal discovery tasks into three types according to the variable paradigm and give the definitions of the three tasks respectively, define and instantiate the relevant datasets for each task and the final causal model constructed at the same time, then reviews the main existing causal discovery methods for different tasks. Finally, we propose some roadmaps from different perspectives for the current research gaps in the field of causal discovery and point out future research directions.

The dominating NLP paradigm of training a strong neural predictor to perform one task on a specific dataset has led to state-of-the-art performance in a variety of applications (eg. sentiment classification, span-prediction based question answering or machine translation). However, it builds upon the assumption that the data distribution is stationary, ie. that the data is sampled from a fixed distribution both at training and test time. This way of training is inconsistent with how we as humans are able to learn from and operate within a constantly changing stream of information. Moreover, it is ill-adapted to real-world use cases where the data distribution is expected to shift over the course of a model's lifetime. The first goal of this thesis is to characterize the different forms this shift can take in the context of natural language processing, and propose benchmarks and evaluation metrics to measure its effect on current deep learning architectures. We then proceed to take steps to mitigate the effect of distributional shift on NLP models. To this end, we develop methods based on parametric reformulations of the distributionally robust optimization framework. Empirically, we demonstrate that these approaches yield more robust models as demonstrated on a selection of realistic problems. In the third and final part of this thesis, we explore ways of efficiently adapting existing models to new domains or tasks. Our contribution to this topic takes inspiration from information geometry to derive a new gradient update rule which alleviate catastrophic forgetting issues during adaptation.

Deep neural networks have revolutionized many machine learning tasks in power systems, ranging from pattern recognition to signal processing. The data in these tasks is typically represented in Euclidean domains. Nevertheless, there is an increasing number of applications in power systems, where data are collected from non-Euclidean domains and represented as the graph-structured data with high dimensional features and interdependency among nodes. The complexity of graph-structured data has brought significant challenges to the existing deep neural networks defined in Euclidean domains. Recently, many studies on extending deep neural networks for graph-structured data in power systems have emerged. In this paper, a comprehensive overview of graph neural networks (GNNs) in power systems is proposed. Specifically, several classical paradigms of GNNs structures (e.g., graph convolutional networks, graph recurrent neural networks, graph attention networks, graph generative networks, spatial-temporal graph convolutional networks, and hybrid forms of GNNs) are summarized, and key applications in power systems such as fault diagnosis, power prediction, power flow calculation, and data generation are reviewed in detail. Furthermore, main issues and some research trends about the applications of GNNs in power systems are discussed.

Sampling methods (e.g., node-wise, layer-wise, or subgraph) has become an indispensable strategy to speed up training large-scale Graph Neural Networks (GNNs). However, existing sampling methods are mostly based on the graph structural information and ignore the dynamicity of optimization, which leads to high variance in estimating the stochastic gradients. The high variance issue can be very pronounced in extremely large graphs, where it results in slow convergence and poor generalization. In this paper, we theoretically analyze the variance of sampling methods and show that, due to the composite structure of empirical risk, the variance of any sampling method can be decomposed into \textit{embedding approximation variance} in the forward stage and \textit{stochastic gradient variance} in the backward stage that necessities mitigating both types of variance to obtain faster convergence rate. We propose a decoupled variance reduction strategy that employs (approximate) gradient information to adaptively sample nodes with minimal variance, and explicitly reduces the variance introduced by embedding approximation. We show theoretically and empirically that the proposed method, even with smaller mini-batch sizes, enjoys a faster convergence rate and entails a better generalization compared to the existing methods.
