Ambisonics is a scene-based spatial audio format that has several useful features compared to object-based formats, such as efficient whole scene rotation and versatility. However, it does not provide direct access to the individual source signals, so that these have to be separated from the mixture when required. Typically, this is done with linear spherical harmonics (SH) beamforming. In this paper, we explore deep-learning-based source separation on static Ambisonics mixtures. In contrast to most source separation approaches, which separate a fixed number of sources of specific sound types, we focus on separating arbitrary sound from specific directions. Specifically, we propose three operating modes that combine a source separation neural network with SH beamforming: refinement, implicit, and mixed mode. We show that a neural network can implicitly associate conditioning directions with the spatial information contained in the Ambisonics scene to extract specific sources. We evaluate the performance of the three proposed approaches and compare them to SH beamforming on musical mixtures generated with the musdb18 dataset, as well as with mixtures generated with the FUSS dataset for universal source separation, under both anechoic and room conditions. Results show that the proposed approaches offer improved separation performance and spatial selectivity compared to conventional SH beamforming.
Speech emotion recognition is a challenging task in speech processing field. For this reason, feature extraction process has a crucial importance to demonstrate and process the speech signals. In this work, we represent a model, which feeds raw audio files directly into the deep neural networks without any feature extraction stage for the recognition of emotions utilizing six different data sets, EMO-DB, RAVDESS, TESS, CREMA, SAVEE, and TESS+RAVDESS. To demonstrate the contribution of proposed model, the performance of traditional feature extraction techniques namely, mel-scale spectogram, mel-frequency cepstral coefficients, are blended with machine learning algorithms, ensemble learning methods, deep and hybrid deep learning techniques. Support vector machine, decision tree, naive Bayes, random forests models are evaluated as machine learning algorithms while majority voting and stacking methods are assessed as ensemble learning techniques. Moreover, convolutional neural networks, long short-term memory networks, and hybrid CNN- LSTM model are evaluated as deep learning techniques and compared with machine learning and ensemble learning methods. To demonstrate the effectiveness of proposed model, the comparison with state-of-the-art studies are carried out. Based on the experiment results, CNN model excels existent approaches with 95.86% of accuracy for TESS+RAVDESS data set using raw audio files, thence determining the new state-of-the-art. The proposed model performs 90.34% of accuracy for EMO-DB with CNN model, 90.42% of accuracy for RAVDESS with CNN model, 99.48% of accuracy for TESS with LSTM model, 69.72% of accuracy for CREMA with CNN model, 85.76% of accuracy for SAVEE with CNN model in speaker-independent audio categorization problems.
The Three-River-Source region is a highly significant natural reserve in China that harbors a plethora of untamed botanical resources. To meet the practical requirements of botanical research and intelligent plant management, we construct a large-scale dataset for Plant detection in the Three-River-Source region (PTRS). This dataset comprises 6965 high-resolution images of 2160*3840 pixels, captured by diverse sensors and platforms, and featuring objects of varying shapes and sizes. Subsequently, a team of botanical image interpretation experts annotated these images with 21 commonly occurring object categories. The fully annotated PTRS images contain 122, 300 instances of plant leaves, each labeled by a horizontal rectangle. The PTRS presents us with challenges such as dense occlusion, varying leaf resolutions, and high feature similarity among plants, prompting us to develop a novel object detection network named PlantDet. This network employs a window-based efficient self-attention module (ST block) to generate robust feature representation at multiple scales, improving the detection efficiency for small and densely-occluded objects. Our experimental results validate the efficacy of our proposed plant detection benchmark, with a precision of 88.1%, a mean average precision (mAP) of 77.6%, and a higher recall compared to the baseline. Additionally, our method effectively overcomes the issue of missing small objects. We intend to share our data and code with interested parties to advance further research in this field.
Observational studies are frequently used to estimate the effect of an exposure or treatment on an outcome. To obtain an unbiased estimate of the treatment effect, it is crucial to measure the exposure accurately. A common type of exposure misclassification is recall bias, which occurs in retrospective cohort studies when study subjects may inaccurately recall their past exposure. Specifically, differential recall bias can be problematic when examining the effect of a self-reported binary exposure since the magnitude of recall bias can differ between groups. In this paper, we provide the following contributions: 1) we derive bounds for the average treatment effect (ATE) in the presence of recall bias; 2) we develop several estimation approaches under different identification strategies; 3) we conduct simulation studies to evaluate their performance under several scenarios of model misspecification; 4) we propose a sensitivity analysis method that can examine the robustness of our results with respect to different assumptions; and 5) we apply the proposed framework to an observational study, estimating the effect of childhood physical abuse on adulthood mental health.
Pseudo Labeling is a technique used to improve the performance of semi-supervised Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) by generating additional pseudo-labels based on confident predictions. However, the quality of generated pseudo-labels has been a longstanding concern due to the sensitivity of the classification objective with respect to the given labels. To avoid the untrustworthy classification supervision indicating ``a node belongs to a specific class,'' we favor the fault-tolerant contrasting supervision demonstrating ``two nodes do not belong to the same class.'' Thus, the problem of generating high-quality pseudo-labels is then transformed into a relaxed version, i.e., identifying reliable negative pairs. To achieve this, we propose a general framework for GNNs, termed Pseudo Contrastive Learning (PCL). It separates two nodes whose positive and negative pseudo-labels target the same class. To incorporate topological knowledge into learning, we devise a topologically weighted contrastive loss that spends more effort separating negative pairs with smaller topological distances. Experimentally, we apply PCL to various GNNs, which consistently outperform their counterparts using other popular general techniques on five real-world graphs.
We consider misinformation games, i.e., multi-agent interactions where the players are misinformed with regards to the game that they play, essentially having an \emph{incorrect} understanding of the game setting, without being aware of their misinformation. In this paper, we introduce and study a new family of misinformation games, called Noisy games, where misinformation is due to structured (white) noise that affects additively the payoff values of players. We analyse the general properties of Noisy games and derive theoretical formulas related to ``behavioural consistency'', i.e., the probability that the players behaviour will not be significantly affected by the noise. We show several properties of these formulas, and present an experimental evaluation that validates and visualises these results.
3D speech enhancement can effectively improve the auditory experience and plays a crucial role in augmented reality technology. However, traditional convolutional-based speech enhancement methods have limitations in extracting dynamic voice information. In this paper, we incorporate a dual-path recurrent neural network block into the U-Net to iteratively extract dynamic audio information in both the time and frequency domains. And an attention mechanism is proposed to fuse the original signal, reference signal, and generated masks. Moreover, we introduce a loss function to simultaneously optimize the network in the time-frequency and time domains. Experimental results show that our system outperforms the state-of-the-art systems on the dataset of ICASSP L3DAS23 challenge.
Multi-flagellated bacteria utilize the hydrodynamic interaction between their filamentary tails, known as flagella, to swim and change their swimming direction in low Reynolds number flow. This interaction, referred to as bundling and tumbling, is often overlooked in simplified hydrodynamic models such as Resistive Force Theories (RFT). However, for the development of efficient and steerable robots inspired by bacteria, it becomes crucial to exploit this interaction. In this paper, we present the construction of a macroscopic bio-inspired robot featuring two rigid flagella arranged as right-handed helices, along with a cylindrical head. By rotating the flagella in opposite directions, the robot's body can reorient itself through repeatable and controllable tumbling. To accurately model this bi-flagellated mechanism in low Reynolds flow, we employ a coupling of rigid body dynamics and the method of Regularized Stokeslet Segments (RSS). Unlike RFT, RSS takes into account the hydrodynamic interaction between distant filamentary structures. Furthermore, we delve into the exploration of the parameter space to optimize the propulsion and torque of the system. To achieve the desired reorientation of the robot, we propose a tumble control scheme that involves modulating the rotation direction and speed of the two flagella. By implementing this scheme, the robot can effectively reorient itself to attain the desired attitude. Notably, the overall scheme boasts a simplified design and control as it only requires two control inputs. With our macroscopic framework serving as a foundation, we envision the eventual miniaturization of this technology to construct mobile and controllable micro-scale bacterial robots.
Deep Learning has revolutionized the fields of computer vision, natural language understanding, speech recognition, information retrieval and more. However, with the progressive improvements in deep learning models, their number of parameters, latency, resources required to train, etc. have all have increased significantly. Consequently, it has become important to pay attention to these footprint metrics of a model as well, not just its quality. We present and motivate the problem of efficiency in deep learning, followed by a thorough survey of the five core areas of model efficiency (spanning modeling techniques, infrastructure, and hardware) and the seminal work there. We also present an experiment-based guide along with code, for practitioners to optimize their model training and deployment. We believe this is the first comprehensive survey in the efficient deep learning space that covers the landscape of model efficiency from modeling techniques to hardware support. Our hope is that this survey would provide the reader with the mental model and the necessary understanding of the field to apply generic efficiency techniques to immediately get significant improvements, and also equip them with ideas for further research and experimentation to achieve additional gains.
Multi-Task Learning (MTL) is a learning paradigm in machine learning and its aim is to leverage useful information contained in multiple related tasks to help improve the generalization performance of all the tasks. In this paper, we give a survey for MTL from the perspective of algorithmic modeling, applications and theoretical analyses. For algorithmic modeling, we give a definition of MTL and then classify different MTL algorithms into five categories, including feature learning approach, low-rank approach, task clustering approach, task relation learning approach and decomposition approach as well as discussing the characteristics of each approach. In order to improve the performance of learning tasks further, MTL can be combined with other learning paradigms including semi-supervised learning, active learning, unsupervised learning, reinforcement learning, multi-view learning and graphical models. When the number of tasks is large or the data dimensionality is high, we review online, parallel and distributed MTL models as well as dimensionality reduction and feature hashing to reveal their computational and storage advantages. Many real-world applications use MTL to boost their performance and we review representative works in this paper. Finally, we present theoretical analyses and discuss several future directions for MTL.
Most deep learning-based models for speech enhancement have mainly focused on estimating the magnitude of spectrogram while reusing the phase from noisy speech for reconstruction. This is due to the difficulty of estimating the phase of clean speech. To improve speech enhancement performance, we tackle the phase estimation problem in three ways. First, we propose Deep Complex U-Net, an advanced U-Net structured model incorporating well-defined complex-valued building blocks to deal with complex-valued spectrograms. Second, we propose a polar coordinate-wise complex-valued masking method to reflect the distribution of complex ideal ratio masks. Third, we define a novel loss function, weighted source-to-distortion ratio (wSDR) loss, which is designed to directly correlate with a quantitative evaluation measure. Our model was evaluated on a mixture of the Voice Bank corpus and DEMAND database, which has been widely used by many deep learning models for speech enhancement. Ablation experiments were conducted on the mixed dataset showing that all three proposed approaches are empirically valid. Experimental results show that the proposed method achieves state-of-the-art performance in all metrics, outperforming previous approaches by a large margin.
