The growing landscape of emerging wireless applications is a key driver toward the development of novel wireless system designs. Such a design can be based on the metaverse that uses a virtual model of the physical world systems along with other schemes/technologies (e.g., optimization theory, machine learning, and blockchain). A metaverse using a virtual model performs proactive intelligent analytics prior to a user request for efficient management of the wireless system resources. Additionally, a metaverse will enable self-sustainability to operate wireless systems with the least possible intervention from network operators. Although the metaverse can offer many benefits, it faces some challenges as well. Therefore, in this tutorial, we discuss the role of a metaverse in enabling wireless applications. We present an overview, key enablers, design aspects (i.e., metaverse for wireless and wireless for metaverse), and a novel high-level architecture of metaverse-based wireless systems. We discuss metaverse management, reliability, and security of the metaverse-based system. Furthermore, we discuss recent advances and standardization of metaverse-enabled wireless system. Finally, we outline open challenges and present possible solutions.

Ability to test firmware on embedded devices is critical to discovering vulnerabilities prior to their adversarial exploitation. State-of-the-art automated testing methods rehost firmware in emulators and attempt to facilitate inputs from a diversity of methods (interrupt driven, status polling) and a plethora of devices (such as modems and GPS units). Despite recent progress to tackle peripheral input generation challenges in rehosting, a firmware's expectation of multi-byte magic values supplied from peripheral inputs for string operations still pose a significant roadblock. We solve the impediment posed by multi-byte magic strings in monolithic firmware. We propose feedback mechanisms for input-to-state mapping and retaining seeds for targeted replacement mutations with an efficient method to solve multi-byte comparisons. The feedback allows an efficient search over a combinatorial solution-space. We evaluate our prototype implementation, SplITS, with a diverse set of 21 real-world monolithic firmware binaries used in prior works, and 3 new binaries from popular open source projects. SplITS automatically solves 497% more multi-byte magic strings guarding further execution to uncover new code and bugs compared to state-of-the-art. In 11 of the 12 real-world firmware binaries with string comparisons, including those extensively analyzed by prior works, SplITS outperformed, statistically significantly. We observed up to 161% increase in blocks covered and discovered 6 new bugs that remained guarded by string comparisons. Significantly, deep and difficult to reproduce bugs guarded by comparisons, identified in prior work, were found consistently. The evolution of mobile communication networks has always been accompanied by the advancement of ISI mitigation techniques, from equalization in 2G, spread spectrum and RAKE receiver in 3G, to OFDM in 4G and 5G. Looking forward towards 6G, by exploiting the high spatial resolution brought by large antenna arrays and the multi-path sparsity of mmWave and Terahertz channels, a novel ISI mitigation technique termed delay alignment modulation (DAM) was recently proposed. However, existing works only consider the single-carrier perfect DAM, which is feasible only when the number of BS antennas is no smaller than that of channel paths, so that all multi-path signal components arrive at the receiver simultaneously and constructively. This imposes stringent requirements on the number of BS antennas and multi-path sparsity. In this paper, we propose a generic DAM technique to manipulate the channel delay spread via spatial-delay processing, thus providing a flexible framework to combat channel time dispersion for efficient single- or multi-carrier transmissions. We first show that when the number of BS antennas is much larger than that of channel paths, perfect delay alignment can be achieved to transform the time-dispersive channel to time non-dispersive channel with the simple delay pre-compensation and path-based MRT beamforming. When perfect DAM is infeasible or undesirable, the proposed generic DAM technique can be applied to significantly reduce the channel delay spread. We further propose the novel DAM-OFDM technique, which is able to save the CP overhead or mitigate the PAPR issue suffered by conventional OFDM. We show that the proposed DAM-OFDM involves joint frequency- and time-domain beamforming optimization, for which a closed-form solution is derived. Simulation results show that the proposed DAM-OFDM outperforms the conventional OFDM in terms of spectral efficiency, BER and PAPR.

Building a multi-modality multi-task neural network toward accurate and robust performance is a de-facto standard in perception task of autonomous driving. However, leveraging such data from multiple sensors to jointly optimize the prediction and planning tasks remains largely unexplored. In this paper, we present FusionAD, to the best of our knowledge, the first unified framework that fuse the information from two most critical sensors, camera and LiDAR, goes beyond perception task. Concretely, we first build a transformer based multi-modality fusion network to effectively produce fusion based features. In constrast to camera-based end-to-end method UniAD, we then establish a fusion aided modality-aware prediction and status-aware planning modules, dubbed FMSPnP that take advantages of multi-modality features. We conduct extensive experiments on commonly used benchmark nuScenes dataset, our FusionAD achieves state-of-the-art performance and surpassing baselines on average 15% on perception tasks like detection and tracking, 10% on occupancy prediction accuracy, reducing prediction error from 0.708 to 0.389 in ADE score and reduces the collision rate from 0.31% to only 0.12%.

Large language models have made significant strides in natural language processing, paving the way for innovative applications including molecular representation and generation. However, most existing single-modality approaches cannot capture the abundant and complex information in molecular data. Here, we introduce GIT-Mol, a multi-modal large language model that integrates the structure Graph, Image, and Text information, including the Simplified Molecular Input Line Entry System (SMILES) and molecular captions. To facilitate the integration of multi-modal molecular data, we propose GIT-Former, a novel architecture capable of mapping all modalities into a unified latent space. Our study develops an innovative any-to-language molecular translation strategy and achieves a 10%-15% improvement in molecular captioning, a 5%-10% accuracy increase in property prediction, and a 20% boost in molecule generation validity compared to baseline or single-modality models.

Recently emerged Vision-and-Language Navigation (VLN) tasks have drawn significant attention in both computer vision and natural language processing communities. Existing VLN tasks are built for agents that navigate on the ground, either indoors or outdoors. However, many tasks require intelligent agents to carry out in the sky, such as UAV-based goods delivery, traffic/security patrol, and scenery tour, to name a few. Navigating in the sky is more complicated than on the ground because agents need to consider the flying height and more complex spatial relationship reasoning. To fill this gap and facilitate research in this field, we propose a new task named AerialVLN, which is UAV-based and towards outdoor environments. We develop a 3D simulator rendered by near-realistic pictures of 25 city-level scenarios. Our simulator supports continuous navigation, environment extension and configuration. We also proposed an extended baseline model based on the widely-used cross-modal-alignment (CMA) navigation methods. We find that there is still a significant gap between the baseline model and human performance, which suggests AerialVLN is a new challenging task. The rapid development of information and communications technology has enabled the use of digital-controlled and software-driven distributed energy resources (DERs) to improve the flexibility and efficiency of power supply, and support grid operations. However, this evolution also exposes geographically-dispersed DERs to cyber threats, including hardware and software vulnerabilities, communication issues, and personnel errors, etc. Therefore, enhancing the cyber-resiliency of DER-based smart grid - the ability to survive successful cyber intrusions - is becoming increasingly vital and has garnered significant attention from both industry and academia. In this survey, we aim to provide a systematical and comprehensive review regarding the cyber-resiliency enhancement (CRE) of DER-based smart grid. Firstly, an integrated threat modeling method is tailored for the hierarchical DER-based smart grid with special emphasis on vulnerability identification and impact analysis. Then, the defense-in-depth strategies encompassing prevention, detection, mitigation, and recovery are comprehensively surveyed, systematically classified, and rigorously compared. A CRE framework is subsequently proposed to incorporate the five key resiliency enablers. Finally, challenges and future directions are discussed in details. The overall aim of this survey is to demonstrate the development trend of CRE methods and motivate further efforts to improve the cyber-resiliency of DER-based smart grid.

Recently, big artificial intelligence (AI) models represented by chatGPT have brought an incredible revolution. With the pre-trained big AI model (BAIM) in certain fields, numerous downstream tasks can be accomplished with only few-shot or even zero-shot learning and exhibit state-of-the-art performances. As widely envisioned, the big AI models are to rapidly penetrate into major intelligent services and applications, and are able to run at low unit cost and high flexibility. In 6G wireless networks, to fully enable intelligent communication, sensing and computing, apart from providing other intelligent wireless services and applications, it is of vital importance to design and deploy certain wireless BAIMs (wBAIMs). However, there still lacks investigation on architecture design and system evaluation for wBAIM. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive discussion as well as some in-depth prospects on the demand, design and deployment aspects of the wBAIM. We opine that wBAIM will be a recipe of the 6G wireless networks to build high-efficient, sustainable, versatile, and extensible wireless intelligence for numerous promising visions. Then, we present the core characteristics and principles to guide the design of wBAIMs, and discuss the key aspects of developing wBAIMs through identifying the differences between the existing BAIMs and the emerging wBAIMs. Finally, related research directions and potential solutions are outlined.

Over the past few years, the rapid development of deep learning technologies for computer vision has greatly promoted the performance of medical image segmentation (MedISeg). However, the recent MedISeg publications usually focus on presentations of the major contributions (e.g., network architectures, training strategies, and loss functions) while unwittingly ignoring some marginal implementation details (also known as "tricks"), leading to a potential problem of the unfair experimental result comparisons. In this paper, we collect a series of MedISeg tricks for different model implementation phases (i.e., pre-training model, data pre-processing, data augmentation, model implementation, model inference, and result post-processing), and experimentally explore the effectiveness of these tricks on the consistent baseline models. Compared to paper-driven surveys that only blandly focus on the advantages and limitation analyses of segmentation models, our work provides a large number of solid experiments and is more technically operable. With the extensive experimental results on both the representative 2D and 3D medical image datasets, we explicitly clarify the effect of these tricks. Moreover, based on the surveyed tricks, we also open-sourced a strong MedISeg repository, where each of its components has the advantage of plug-and-play. We believe that this milestone work not only completes a comprehensive and complementary survey of the state-of-the-art MedISeg approaches, but also offers a practical guide for addressing the future medical image processing challenges including but not limited to small dataset learning, class imbalance learning, multi-modality learning, and domain adaptation. The incredible development of federated learning (FL) has benefited various tasks in the domains of computer vision and natural language processing, and the existing frameworks such as TFF and FATE has made the deployment easy in real-world applications. However, federated graph learning (FGL), even though graph data are prevalent, has not been well supported due to its unique characteristics and requirements. The lack of FGL-related framework increases the efforts for accomplishing reproducible research and deploying in real-world applications. Motivated by such strong demand, in this paper, we first discuss the challenges in creating an easy-to-use FGL package and accordingly present our implemented package FederatedScope-GNN (FS-G), which provides (1) a unified view for modularizing and expressing FGL algorithms; (2) comprehensive DataZoo and ModelZoo for out-of-the-box FGL capability; (3) an efficient model auto-tuning component; and (4) off-the-shelf privacy attack and defense abilities. We validate the effectiveness of FS-G by conducting extensive experiments, which simultaneously gains many valuable insights about FGL for the community. Moreover, we employ FS-G to serve the FGL application in real-world E-commerce scenarios, where the attained improvements indicate great potential business benefits. We publicly release FS-G, as submodules of FederatedScope, at //github.com/alibaba/FederatedScope to promote FGL's research and enable broad applications that would otherwise be infeasible due to the lack of a dedicated package.

The cross-domain recommendation technique is an effective way of alleviating the data sparsity in recommender systems by leveraging the knowledge from relevant domains. Transfer learning is a class of algorithms underlying these techniques. In this paper, we propose a novel transfer learning approach for cross-domain recommendation by using neural networks as the base model. We assume that hidden layers in two base networks are connected by cross mappings, leading to the collaborative cross networks (CoNet). CoNet enables dual knowledge transfer across domains by introducing cross connections from one base network to another and vice versa. CoNet is achieved in multi-layer feedforward networks by adding dual connections and joint loss functions, which can be trained efficiently by back-propagation. The proposed model is evaluated on two real-world datasets and it outperforms baseline models by relative improvements of 3.56\% in MRR and 8.94\% in NDCG, respectively.
