The analysis of the spectral features of a Toeplitz matrix-sequence $\left\{T_{n}(f)\right\}_{n\in\mathbb N}$, generated by a symbol $f\in L^1([-\pi,\pi])$, real-valued almost everywhere (a.e.), has been provided in great detail in the last century, as well as the study of the conditioning, when $f$ is nonnegative a.e. Since the resulting generating function depends on $n$, the standard theory cannot be applied and the analysis has to be performed using new ideas. Few selected numerical experiments are presented, also in connection with matrices that come from distributed-order FDE problems, and the adherence with the theoretical analysis is discussed together with open questions and future investigations.

In this paper we study systems of autonomous algebraic ODEs in several differential indeterminates. We develop a notion of algebraic dimension of such systems by considering them as algebraic systems. Afterwards we apply differential elimination and analyze the behavior of the dimension in the resulting Thomas decomposition. For such systems of algebraic dimension one, we show that all formal Puiseux series solutions can be approximated up to an arbitrary order by convergent solutions. We show that the existence of Puiseux series and algebraic solutions can be decided algorithmically. Moreover, we present a symbolic algorithm to compute all algebraic solutions. The output can either be represented by triangular systems or by their minimal polynomials.

Low-rank and nonsmooth matrix optimization problems capture many fundamental tasks in statistics and machine learning. While significant progress has been made in recent years in developing efficient methods for \textit{smooth} low-rank optimization problems that avoid maintaining high-rank matrices and computing expensive high-rank SVDs, advances for nonsmooth problems have been slow paced. In this paper we consider standard convex relaxations for such problems. Mainly, we prove that under a natural \textit{generalized strict complementarity} condition and under the relatively mild assumption that the nonsmooth objective can be written as a maximum of smooth functions, the \textit{extragradient method}, when initialized with a "warm-start" point, converges to an optimal solution with rate $O(1/t)$ while requiring only two \textit{low-rank} SVDs per iteration. We give a precise trade-off between the rank of the SVDs required and the radius of the ball in which we need to initialize the method. We support our theoretical results with empirical experiments on several nonsmooth low-rank matrix recovery tasks, demonstrating that using simple initializations, the extragradient method produces exactly the same iterates when full-rank SVDs are replaced with SVDs of rank that matches the rank of the (low-rank) ground-truth matrix to be recovered.

A singularly perturbed parabolic problem of convection-diffusion type with a discontinuous initial condition is examined. An analytic function is identified which matches the discontinuity in the initial condition and also satisfies the homogenous parabolic differential equation associated with the problem. The difference between this analytical function and the solution of the parabolic problem is approximated numerically, using an upwind finite difference operator combined with an appropriate layer-adapted mesh. The numerical method is shown to be parameter-uniform. Numerical results are presented to illustrate the theoretical error bounds established in the paper.

In the seminal paper of Bank and Weiser [Math. Comp., 44 (1985), pp.283-301] a new a posteriori estimator was introduced. This estimator requires the solution of a local Neumann problem on every cell of the finite element mesh. Despite the promise of Bank-Weiser type estimators, namely locality, computational efficiency, and asymptotic sharpness, they have seen little use in practical computational problems. The focus of this contribution is to describe a novel implementation of hierarchical estimators of the Bank-Weiser type in a modern high-level finite element software with automatic code generation capabilities. We show how to use the estimator to drive (goal-oriented) adaptive mesh refinement and to mixed approximations of the nearly-incompressible elasticity problems. We provide comparisons with various other used estimators. An open-source implementation based on the FEniCS Project finite element software is provided as supplementary material.

This paper presents encoding and decoding algorithms for several families of optimal rank metric codes whose codes are in restricted forms of symmetric, alternating and Hermitian matrices. First, we show the evaluation encoding is the right choice for these codes and then we provide easily reversible encoding methods for each family. Later unique decoding algorithms for the codes are described. The decoding algorithms are interpolation-based and can uniquely correct errors for each code with rank up to $\lfloor(d-1)/2\rfloor$ in polynomial-time, where $d$ is the minimum distance of the code.

The purpose of this paper is to discuss a generalization of the bubble transform to differential forms. The bubble transform was discussed in a previous paper by the authors for scalar valued functions, or zero-forms, and represents a new tool for the understanding of finite element spaces of arbitrary polynomial degree. The present paper contains a similar study for differential forms. From a simplicial mesh of the domain, we build a map which decomposes piecewise smooth $k$-forms into a sum of local bubbles supported on appropriate macroelements. The key properties of the decomposition are that it commutes with the exterior derivative and preserves the piecewise polynomial structure of the standard finite element spaces of $k$-forms. Furthermore, the transform is bounded in $L^2$ and also on the appropriate subspace consisting of $k$-forms with exterior derivatives in $L^2$.

In the present paper, we study the analyticity of the leftmost eigenvalue of the linear elliptic partial differential operator with random coefficient and analyze the convergence rate of the quasi-Monte Carlo method for approximation of the expectation of this quantity. Based on these bounds we prove the dimension-independent convergence rate of the quasi-Monte Carlo method to approximate the expectation of $\lambda_1(\boldsymbol{y})$. In this case, the computational cost of fast component-by-component algorithm for generating quasi-Monte Carlo $N$-points scales linearly in terms of integration dimension.

In this article, we deal with the efficient computation of the Wright function in the cases of interest for the expression of solutions of some fractional differential equations. The proposed algorithm is based on the inversion of the Laplace transform of a particular expression of the Wright function for which we discuss in detail the error analysis. We also present a code package that implements the algorithm proposed here in different programming languages. The analysis and implementation are accompanied by an extensive set of numerical experiments that validate both the theoretical estimates of the error and the applicability of the proposed method for representing the solutions of fractional differential equations.

The main contribution of this paper is a new submap joining based approach for solving large-scale Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) problems. Each local submap is independently built using the local information through solving a small-scale SLAM; the joining of submaps mainly involves solving linear least squares and performing nonlinear coordinate transformations. Through approximating the local submap information as the state estimate and its corresponding information matrix, judiciously selecting the submap coordinate frames, and approximating the joining of a large number of submaps by joining only two maps at a time, either sequentially or in a more efficient Divide and Conquer manner, the nonlinear optimization process involved in most of the existing submap joining approaches is avoided. Thus the proposed submap joining algorithm does not require initial guess or iterations since linear least squares problems have closed-form solutions. The proposed Linear SLAM technique is applicable to feature-based SLAM, pose graph SLAM and D-SLAM, in both two and three dimensions, and does not require any assumption on the character of the covariance matrices. Simulations and experiments are performed to evaluate the proposed Linear SLAM algorithm. Results using publicly available datasets in 2D and 3D show that Linear SLAM produces results that are very close to the best solutions that can be obtained using full nonlinear optimization algorithm started from an accurate initial guess. The C/C++ and MATLAB source codes of Linear SLAM are available on OpenSLAM.

In this paper, we study the optimal convergence rate for distributed convex optimization problems in networks. We model the communication restrictions imposed by the network as a set of affine constraints and provide optimal complexity bounds for four different setups, namely: the function $F(\xb) \triangleq \sum_{i=1}^{m}f_i(\xb)$ is strongly convex and smooth, either strongly convex or smooth or just convex. Our results show that Nesterov's accelerated gradient descent on the dual problem can be executed in a distributed manner and obtains the same optimal rates as in the centralized version of the problem (up to constant or logarithmic factors) with an additional cost related to the spectral gap of the interaction matrix. Finally, we discuss some extensions to the proposed setup such as proximal friendly functions, time-varying graphs, improvement of the condition numbers.
