Human Activity Recognition (HAR) research has gained significant momentum due to recent technological advancements, artificial intelligence algorithms, the need for smart cities, and socioeconomic transformation. However, existing computer vision and sensor-based HAR solutions have limitations such as privacy issues, memory and power consumption, and discomfort in wearing sensors for which researchers are observing a paradigm shift in HAR research. In response, WiFi-based HAR is gaining popularity due to the availability of more coarse-grained Channel State Information. However, existing WiFi-based HAR approaches are limited to classifying independent and non-concurrent human activities performed within equal time duration. Recent research commonly utilizes a Single Input Multiple Output communication link with a WiFi signal of 5 GHz channel frequency, using two WiFi routers or two Intel 5300 NICs as transmitter-receiver. Our study, on the other hand, utilizes a Multiple Input Multiple Output radio link between a WiFi router and an Intel 5300 NIC, with the time-series Wi-Fi channel state information based on 2.4 GHz channel frequency for mutual human-to-human concurrent interaction recognition. The proposed Self-Attention guided Bidirectional Gated Recurrent Neural Network (Attention-BiGRU) deep learning model can classify 13 mutual interactions with a maximum benchmark accuracy of 94% for a single subject-pair. This has been expanded for ten subject pairs, which secured a benchmark accuracy of 88% with improved classification around the interaction-transition region. Recently, emotion recognition based on physiological signals has emerged as a field with intensive research. The utilization of multi-modal, multi-channel physiological signals has significantly improved the performance of emotion recognition systems, due to their complementarity. However, effectively integrating emotion-related semantic information from different modalities and capturing inter-modal dependencies remains a challenging issue. Many existing multimodal fusion methods ignore either token-to-token or channel-to-channel correlations of multichannel signals from different modalities, which limits the classification capability of the models to some extent. In this paper, we propose a comprehensive perspective of multimodal fusion that integrates channel-level and token-level cross-modal interactions. Specifically, we introduce a unified cross attention module called Token-chAnnel COmpound (TACO) Cross Attention to perform multimodal fusion, which simultaneously models channel-level and token-level dependencies between modalities. Additionally, we propose a 2D position encoding method to preserve information about the spatial distribution of EEG signal channels, then we use two transformer encoders ahead of the fusion module to capture long-term temporal dependencies from the EEG signal and the peripheral physiological signal, respectively. Subject-independent experiments on emotional dataset DEAP and Dreamer demonstrate that the proposed model achieves state-of-the-art performance.

Short-term action anticipation (STA) in first-person videos is a challenging task that involves understanding the next active object interactions and predicting future actions. Existing action anticipation methods have primarily focused on utilizing features extracted from video clips, but often overlooked the importance of objects and their interactions. To this end, we propose a novel approach that applies a guided attention mechanism between the objects, and the spatiotemporal features extracted from video clips, enhancing the motion and contextual information, and further decoding the object-centric and motion-centric information to address the problem of STA in egocentric videos. Our method, GANO (Guided Attention for Next active Objects) is a multi-modal, end-to-end, single transformer-based network. The experimental results performed on the largest egocentric dataset demonstrate that GANO outperforms the existing state-of-the-art methods for the prediction of the next active object label, its bounding box location, the corresponding future action, and the time to contact the object. The ablation study shows the positive contribution of the guided attention mechanism compared to other fusion methods. Moreover, it is possible to improve the next active object location and class label prediction results of GANO by just appending the learnable object tokens with the region of interest embeddings.

Machine Learning (ML) has recently been a skyrocketing field in Computer Science. As computer hardware engineers, we are enthusiastic about hardware implementations of popular software ML architectures to optimize their performance, reliability, and resource usage. In this project, we designed a highly-configurable, real-time device for recognizing handwritten letters and digits using an Altera DE1 FPGA Kit. We followed various engineering standards, including IEEE-754 32-bit Floating-Point Standard, Video Graphics Array (VGA) display protocol, Universal Asynchronous Receiver-Transmitter (UART) protocol, and Inter-Integrated Circuit (I2C) protocols to achieve the project goals. These significantly improved our design in compatibility, reusability, and simplicity in verifications. Following these standards, we designed a 32-bit floating-point (FP) instruction set architecture (ISA). We developed a 5-stage RISC processor in System Verilog to manage image processing, matrix multiplications, ML classifications, and user interfaces. Three different ML architectures were implemented and evaluated on our design: Linear Classification (LC), a 784-64-10 fully connected neural network (NN), and a LeNet-like Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) with ReLU activation layers and 36 classes (10 for the digits and 26 for the case-insensitive letters). The training processes were done in Python scripts, and the resulting kernels and weights were stored in hex files and loaded into the FPGA's SRAM units. Convolution, pooling, data management, and various other ML features were guided by firmware in our custom assembly language. This paper documents the high-level design block diagrams, interfaces between each System Verilog module, implementation details of our software and firmware components, and further discussions on potential impacts.

Developing optimal controllers for aggressive high-speed quadcopter flight poses significant challenges in robotics. Recent trends in the field involve utilizing neural network controllers trained through supervised or reinforcement learning. However, the sim-to-real transfer introduces a reality gap, requiring the use of robust inner loop controllers during real flights, which limits the network's control authority and flight performance. In this paper, we investigate for the first time, an end-to-end neural network controller, addressing the reality gap issue without being restricted by an inner-loop controller. The networks, referred to as G\&CNets, are trained to learn an energy-optimal policy mapping the quadcopter's state to rpm commands using an optimal trajectory dataset. In hover-to-hover flights, we identified the unmodeled moments as a significant contributor to the reality gap. To mitigate this, we propose an adaptive control strategy that works by learning from optimal trajectories of a system affected by constant external pitch, roll and yaw moments. In real test flights, this model mismatch is estimated onboard and fed to the network to obtain the optimal rpm command. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our method by performing energy-optimal hover-to-hover flights with and without moment feedback. Finally, we compare the adaptive controller to a state-of-the-art differential-flatness-based controller in a consecutive waypoint flight and demonstrate the advantages of our method in terms of energy optimality and robustness.

Edge computing facilitates low-latency services at the network's edge by distributing computation, communication, and storage resources within the geographic proximity of mobile and Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices. The recent advancement in Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) technologies has opened new opportunities for edge computing in military operations, disaster response, or remote areas where traditional terrestrial networks are limited or unavailable. In such environments, UAVs can be deployed as aerial edge servers or relays to facilitate edge computing services. This form of computing is also known as UAV-enabled Edge Computing (UEC), which offers several unique benefits such as mobility, line-of-sight, flexibility, computational capability, and cost-efficiency. However, the resources on UAVs, edge servers, and IoT devices are typically very limited in the context of UEC. Efficient resource management is, therefore, a critical research challenge in UEC. In this article, we present a survey on the existing research in UEC from the resource management perspective. We identify a conceptual architecture, different types of collaborations, wireless communication models, research directions, key techniques and performance indicators for resource management in UEC. We also present a taxonomy of resource management in UEC. Finally, we identify and discuss some open research challenges that can stimulate future research directions for resource management in UEC.

Graph Neural Networks (GNN) is an emerging field for learning on non-Euclidean data. Recently, there has been increased interest in designing GNN that scales to large graphs. Most existing methods use "graph sampling" or "layer-wise sampling" techniques to reduce training time. However, these methods still suffer from degrading performance and scalability problems when applying to graphs with billions of edges. This paper presents GBP, a scalable GNN that utilizes a localized bidirectional propagation process from both the feature vectors and the training/testing nodes. Theoretical analysis shows that GBP is the first method that achieves sub-linear time complexity for both the precomputation and the training phases. An extensive empirical study demonstrates that GBP achieves state-of-the-art performance with significantly less training/testing time. Most notably, GBP can deliver superior performance on a graph with over 60 million nodes and 1.8 billion edges in less than half an hour on a single machine.

We examine the problem of question answering over knowledge graphs, focusing on simple questions that can be answered by the lookup of a single fact. Adopting a straightforward decomposition of the problem into entity detection, entity linking, relation prediction, and evidence combination, we explore simple yet strong baselines. On the popular SimpleQuestions dataset, we find that basic LSTMs and GRUs plus a few heuristics yield accuracies that approach the state of the art, and techniques that do not use neural networks also perform reasonably well. These results show that gains from sophisticated deep learning techniques proposed in the literature are quite modest and that some previous models exhibit unnecessary complexity.

In this paper, we propose a novel multi-task learning architecture, which incorporates recent advances in attention mechanisms. Our approach, the Multi-Task Attention Network (MTAN), consists of a single shared network containing a global feature pool, together with task-specific soft-attention modules, which are trainable in an end-to-end manner. These attention modules allow for learning of task-specific features from the global pool, whilst simultaneously allowing for features to be shared across different tasks. The architecture can be built upon any feed-forward neural network, is simple to implement, and is parameter efficient. Experiments on the CityScapes dataset show that our method outperforms several baselines in both single-task and multi-task learning, and is also more robust to the various weighting schemes in the multi-task loss function. We further explore the effectiveness of our method through experiments over a range of task complexities, and show how our method scales well with task complexity compared to baselines.

In this paper, we propose the joint learning attention and recurrent neural network (RNN) models for multi-label classification. While approaches based on the use of either model exist (e.g., for the task of image captioning), training such existing network architectures typically require pre-defined label sequences. For multi-label classification, it would be desirable to have a robust inference process, so that the prediction error would not propagate and thus affect the performance. Our proposed model uniquely integrates attention and Long Short Term Memory (LSTM) models, which not only addresses the above problem but also allows one to identify visual objects of interests with varying sizes without the prior knowledge of particular label ordering. More importantly, label co-occurrence information can be jointly exploited by our LSTM model. Finally, by advancing the technique of beam search, prediction of multiple labels can be efficiently achieved by our proposed network model.

Recurrent neural nets (RNN) and convolutional neural nets (CNN) are widely used on NLP tasks to capture the long-term and local dependencies, respectively. Attention mechanisms have recently attracted enormous interest due to their highly parallelizable computation, significantly less training time, and flexibility in modeling dependencies. We propose a novel attention mechanism in which the attention between elements from input sequence(s) is directional and multi-dimensional (i.e., feature-wise). A light-weight neural net, "Directional Self-Attention Network (DiSAN)", is then proposed to learn sentence embedding, based solely on the proposed attention without any RNN/CNN structure. DiSAN is only composed of a directional self-attention with temporal order encoded, followed by a multi-dimensional attention that compresses the sequence into a vector representation. Despite its simple form, DiSAN outperforms complicated RNN models on both prediction quality and time efficiency. It achieves the best test accuracy among all sentence encoding methods and improves the most recent best result by 1.02% on the Stanford Natural Language Inference (SNLI) dataset, and shows state-of-the-art test accuracy on the Stanford Sentiment Treebank (SST), Multi-Genre natural language inference (MultiNLI), Sentences Involving Compositional Knowledge (SICK), Customer Review, MPQA, TREC question-type classification and Subjectivity (SUBJ) datasets.
