As AI technology develops, trust in AI agents is becoming more important for more AI applications in human society. Possible ways to improve the trust relationship include empathy, success-failure series, and capability (performance). Appropriate trust is less likely to cause deviations between actual and ideal performance. In this study, we focus on the agent's empathy and success-failure series to increase trust in AI agents. We experimentally examine the effect of empathy from agent to person on changes in trust over time. The experiment was conducted with a two-factor mixed design: empathy (available, not available) and success-failure series (phase 1 to phase 5). An analysis of variance (ANOVA) was conducted using data from 198 participants. The results showed an interaction between the empathy factor and the success-failure series factor, with trust in the agent stabilizing when empathy was present. This result supports our hypothesis. This study shows that designing AI agents to be empathetic is an important factor for trust and helps humans build appropriate trust relationships with AI agents.

In human-AI collaboration systems for critical applications, in order to ensure minimal error, users should set an operating point based on model confidence to determine when the decision should be delegated to human experts. Samples for which model confidence is lower than the operating point would be manually analysed by experts to avoid mistakes. Such systems can become truly useful only if they consider two aspects: models should be confident only for samples for which they are accurate, and the number of samples delegated to experts should be minimized. The latter aspect is especially crucial for applications where available expert time is limited and expensive, such as healthcare. The trade-off between the model accuracy and the number of samples delegated to experts can be represented by a curve that is similar to an ROC curve, which we refer to as confidence operating characteristic (COC) curve. In this paper, we argue that deep neural networks should be trained by taking into account both accuracy and expert load and, to that end, propose a new complementary loss function for classification that maximizes the area under this COC curve. This promotes simultaneously the increase in network accuracy and the reduction in number of samples delegated to humans. We perform experiments on multiple computer vision and medical image datasets for classification. Our results demonstrate that the proposed loss improves classification accuracy and delegates less number of decisions to experts, achieves better out-of-distribution samples detection and on par calibration performance compared to existing loss functions.

Despite its importance for insurance, there is almost no literature on statistical hail damage modeling. Statistical models for hailstorms exist, though they are generally not open-source, but no study appears to have developed a stochastic hail impact function. In this paper, we use hail-related insurance claim data to build a Gaussian line process with extreme marks to model both the geographical footprint of a hailstorm and the damage to buildings that hailstones can cause. We build a model for the claim counts and claim values, and compare it to the use of a benchmark deterministic hail impact function. Our model proves to be better than the benchmark at capturing hail spatial patterns and allows for localized and extreme damage, which is seen in the insurance data. The evaluation of both the claim counts and value predictions shows that performance is improved compared to the benchmark, especially for extreme damage. Our model appears to be the first to provide realistic estimates for hail damage to individual buildings.

This article revisits the fundamental problem of parameter selection for Gaussian process interpolation. By choosing the mean and the covariance functions of a Gaussian process within parametric families, the user obtains a family of Bayesian procedures to perform predictions about the unknown function, and must choose a member of the family that will hopefully provide good predictive performances. We base our study on the general concept of scoring rules, which provides an effective framework for building leave-one-out selection and validation criteria, and a notion of extended likelihood criteria based on an idea proposed by Fasshauer and co-authors in 2009, which makes it possible to recover standard selection criteria such as, for instance, the generalized cross-validation criterion. Under this setting, we empirically show on several test problems of the literature that the choice of an appropriate family of models is often more important than the choice of a particular selection criterion (e.g., the likelihood versus a leave-one-out selection criterion). Moreover, our numerical results show that the regularity parameter of a Mat{\'e}rn covariance can be selected effectively by most selection criteria.

We study the convergence and error estimates of a finite volume method for the compressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier system with Dirichlet boundary conditions. Physical fluid domain is typically smooth and needs to be approximated by a polygonal computational domain. This leads to domain-related discretization errors, the so-called variational crimes. To treat them efficiently we embed the fluid domain into a large enough cubed domain, and propose a finite volume scheme for the corresponding domain-penalized problem. Under the assumption that the numerical density and temperature are uniformly bounded, we derive the ballistic energy inequality, yielding a priori estimates and the consistency of the penalization finite volume approximations. Further, we show that the numerical solutions converge weakly to a generalized, the so-called dissipative measure-valued, solution of the corresponding Dirichlet problem. If a strong solution exists, we prove that our numerical approximations converge strongly with the rate 1/4. Additionally, assuming uniform boundedness of the approximate velocities, we obtain global existence of the strong solution. In this case we prove that the numerical solutions converge strongly to the strong solution with the optimal rate 1/2.

The development of artificial agents for social interaction pushes to enrich robots with social skills and knowledge about (local) social norms. One possibility is to distinguish the expressive and the functional orders during a human-robot interaction. The overarching aim of this work is to set a framework to make the artificial agent socially-competent beyond dyadic interaction-interaction in varying multi-party social situations-and beyond individual-based user personalization, thereby enlarging the current conception of "culturally-adaptive". The core idea is to provide the artificial agent with the capability to handle different kinds of interactional disruptions, and associated recovery strategies, in microsociology. The result is obtained by classifying functional and social disruptions, and by investigating the requirements a robot's architecture should satisfy to exploit such knowledge. The paper also highlights how this level of competence is achieved by focusing on just three dimensions: (i) social capability, (ii) relational role, and (iii) proximity, leaving aside the further complexity of full-fledged human-human interactions. Without going into technical aspects, End-to-end Data-driven Architectures and Modular Architectures are discussed to evaluate the degree to which they can exploit this new set of social and cultural knowledge. Finally, a list of general requirements for such agents is proposed.

In the future, it is anticipated that software-defined networking (SDN) will become the preferred platform for deploying diverse networks. Compared to traditional networks, SDN separates the control and data planes for efficient domain-wide traffic routing and management. The controllers in the control plane are responsible for programming data plane forwarding devices, while the top layer, the application plane, enforces policies and programs the network. The different levels of the SDN use interfaces for communication. However, SDN faces challenges with traffic distribution, such as load imbalance, which can negatively affect the network performance. Consequently, developers have developed various SDN load-balancing solutions to enhance SDN effectiveness. In addition, researchers are considering the potential of implementing some artificial intelligence (AI) approaches into SDN to improve network resource usage and overall performance due to the fast growth of the AI field. This survey focuses on the following: Firstly, analyzing the SDN architecture and investigating the problem of load balancing in SDN. Secondly, categorizing AI-based load balancing methods and thoroughly assessing these mechanisms from various perspectives, such as the algorithm/technique employed, the tackled problem, and their strengths and weaknesses. Thirdly, summarizing the metrics utilized to measure the effectiveness of these techniques. Finally, identifying the trends and challenges of AI-based load balancing for future research.

We used survival analysis to quantify the impact of postdischarge evaluation and management (E/M) services in preventing hospital readmission or death. Our approach avoids a specific pitfall of applying machine learning to this problem, which is an inflated estimate of the effect of interventions, due to survivors bias -- where the magnitude of inflation may be conditional on heterogeneous confounders in the population. This bias arises simply because in order to receive an intervention after discharge, a person must not have been readmitted in the intervening period. After deriving an expression for this phantom effect, we controlled for this and other biases within an inherently interpretable Bayesian survival framework. We identified case management services as being the most impactful for reducing readmissions overall.

Customising AI technologies to each user's preferences is fundamental to them functioning well. Unfortunately, current methods require too much user involvement and fail to capture their true preferences. In fact, to avoid the nuisance of manually setting preferences, users usually accept the default settings even if these do not conform to their true preferences. Norms can be useful to regulate behaviour and ensure it adheres to user preferences but, while the literature has thoroughly studied norms, most proposals take a formal perspective. Indeed, while there has been some research on constructing norms to capture a user's privacy preferences, these methods rely on domain knowledge which, in the case of AI technologies, is difficult to obtain and maintain. We argue that a new perspective is required when constructing norms, which is to exploit the large amount of preference information readily available from whole systems of users. Inspired by recommender systems, we believe that collaborative filtering can offer a suitable approach to identifying a user's norm preferences without excessive user involvement.

In large-scale systems there are fundamental challenges when centralised techniques are used for task allocation. The number of interactions is limited by resource constraints such as on computation, storage, and network communication. We can increase scalability by implementing the system as a distributed task-allocation system, sharing tasks across many agents. However, this also increases the resource cost of communications and synchronisation, and is difficult to scale. In this paper we present four algorithms to solve these problems. The combination of these algorithms enable each agent to improve their task allocation strategy through reinforcement learning, while changing how much they explore the system in response to how optimal they believe their current strategy is, given their past experience. We focus on distributed agent systems where the agents' behaviours are constrained by resource usage limits, limiting agents to local rather than system-wide knowledge. We evaluate these algorithms in a simulated environment where agents are given a task composed of multiple subtasks that must be allocated to other agents with differing capabilities, to then carry out those tasks. We also simulate real-life system effects such as networking instability. Our solution is shown to solve the task allocation problem to 6.7% of the theoretical optimal within the system configurations considered. It provides 5x better performance recovery over no-knowledge retention approaches when system connectivity is impacted, and is tested against systems up to 100 agents with less than a 9% impact on the algorithms' performance.

In this paper we develop a novel neural network model for predicting implied volatility surface. Prior financial domain knowledge is taken into account. A new activation function that incorporates volatility smile is proposed, which is used for the hidden nodes that process the underlying asset price. In addition, financial conditions, such as the absence of arbitrage, the boundaries and the asymptotic slope, are embedded into the loss function. This is one of the very first studies which discuss a methodological framework that incorporates prior financial domain knowledge into neural network architecture design and model training. The proposed model outperforms the benchmarked models with the option data on the S&P 500 index over 20 years. More importantly, the domain knowledge is satisfied empirically, showing the model is consistent with the existing financial theories and conditions related to implied volatility surface.
