5G millimeter wave (mmWave) cellular networks have been deployed by carriers mostly in dense urban areas of the US, and have been reported to deliver a throughput of around 1 - 2 Gbps per device. These throughput numbers are captured via speed-testing applications which run for only a few seconds at a time and are not indicative of the sustained throughput obtained while downloading a large volume of data that can take several minutes to complete. In this paper we report the first detailed measurements in three cities, Miami, Chicago, and San Francisco that study the impact of skin temperature, as measured by the device, on the throughput that the device is able to sustain over many minutes. We report results from experiments conducted on deployed 5G mmWave networks that show the effect of thermal throttling on a 5G mmWave communication link when a large file download is initiated that saturates the link, i.e., the device is connected to 4 mmWave downlink channels each 100 MHz wide. We observe a gradual increase of skin temperature within 1-2 minutes which correlates to a decrease in the data rate due to the number of aggregated mmWave channels reducing from 4 to 1 before finally switching to 4G LTE. Finally, we identify messaging in the Radio Resource Control (RRC) layer confirming that the reduction in throughput was due to throttling due to the skin temperature rise and further demonstrate that cooling the device restores throughput performance. These results are extremely important since they indicate that the Gbps throughput deliverable by 5G mmWave to an end-user 5G device will be limited not by network characteristics but by device thermal management.

In this paper we present a thorough study of security problems in IoT and classify possible cyberattacks on each layer of IoT architecture. We also discuss challenges to traditional security solutions such as cryptographic solutions, authentication mechanisms and key management in IoT. Device authentication and access controls is an essential area of IoT security, which is not surveyed so far. We spent our efforts to bring the state of the art device authentication and access control techniques on a single paper.

When IP-packet processing is unconditionally carried out on behalf of an operating system kernel thread, processing systems can experience overload in high incoming traffic scenarios. This is especially worrying for embedded real-time devices controlling their physical environment in industrial IoT scenarios and automotive systems. We propose an embedded real-time aware IP stack adaption with an early demultiplexing scheme for incoming packets and subsequent per-flow aperiodic scheduling. By instrumenting existing embedded IP stacks, rigid prioritization with minimal latency is deployed without the need of further task resources. Simple mitigation techniques can be applied to individual flows, causing hardly measurable overhead while at the same time protecting the system from overload conditions. Our IP stack adaption is able to reduce the low-priority packet processing time by over 86% compared to an unmodified stack. The network subsystem can thereby remain active at a 7x higher general traffic load before disabling the receive IRQ as a last resort to assure deadlines.

Multi-Agent Systems (MAS) are notoriously complex and hard to verify. In fact, it is not trivial to model a MAS, and even when a model is built, it is not always possible to verify, in a formal way, that it is actually behaving as we expect. Usually, it is relevant to know whether an agent is capable of fulfilling its own goals. One possible way to check this is through Model Checking. Specifically, by verifying Alternating-time Temporal Logic (ATL) properties, where the notion of strategies for achieving goals can be described. Unfortunately, the resulting model checking problem is not decidable in general. In this paper, we present a verification procedure based on combining Model Checking and Runtime Verification, where sub-models of the MAS model belonging to decidable fragments are verified by a model checker, and runtime monitors are used to verify the rest. Furthermore, we implement our technique and show experimental results.

We introduce a restriction of the classical 2-party deterministic communication protocol where Alice and Bob are restricted to using only comparison functions. We show that the complexity of a function in the model is, up to a constant factor, determined by a complexity measure analogous to Yao's tiling number, which we call the geometric tiling number which can be computed in polynomial time. As a warm-up, we consider an analogous restricted decision tree model and observe a 1-dimensional analog of the above results.

Tensor PCA is a stylized statistical inference problem introduced by Montanari and Richard to study the computational difficulty of estimating an unknown parameter from higher-order moment tensors. Unlike its matrix counterpart, Tensor PCA exhibits a statistical-computational gap, i.e., a sample size regime where the problem is information-theoretically solvable but conjectured to be computationally hard. This paper derives computational lower bounds on the run-time of memory bounded algorithms for Tensor PCA using communication complexity. These lower bounds specify a trade-off among the number of passes through the data sample, the sample size, and the memory required by any algorithm that successfully solves Tensor PCA. While the lower bounds do not rule out polynomial-time algorithms, they do imply that many commonly-used algorithms, such as gradient descent and power method, must have a higher iteration count when the sample size is not large enough. Similar lower bounds are obtained for Non-Gaussian Component Analysis, a family of statistical estimation problems in which low-order moment tensors carry no information about the unknown parameter. Finally, stronger lower bounds are obtained for an asymmetric variant of Tensor PCA and related statistical estimation problems. These results explain why many estimators for these problems use a memory state that is significantly larger than the effective dimensionality of the parameter of interest.

Software Defined Radio (SDR) platforms are valuable for research and development activities or high-end systems that demand real-time adaptable wireless protocols. While low latency can be achieved using the dedicated digital processing unit of a state-of-the-art SDR platform, its Radio Frequency (RF) front-end often poses a limitation in terms of turnaround time (TT), the time needed for switching from the receiving to the transmitting mode (or vice versa). Zero Intermediate Frequency (ZIF) transceivers are favorable for SDR, but suffer from self-interference even if the device is not currently transmitting. The strict MAC-layer requirements of Time Division Duplex (TDD) protocols like Wi-Fi cannot be achieved using configurable ZIF transceivers without having to compromise receiver sensitivity. Using a novel approach, we show that the TT using the AD9361 RF front-end can be as low as 640 ns, while the self-interference is at the same level as achieved by the conventional TDD mode, which has a TT of at least 55 {\mu}s. As compared to Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) mode, a decrease of receiver noise floor by about 13 dB in the 2.4 GHz band and by about 4.5 dB in the 5 GHz band is achieved.

Advanced wearable devices are increasingly incorporating high-resolution multi-camera systems. As state-of-the-art neural networks for processing the resulting image data are computationally demanding, there has been growing interest in leveraging fifth generation (5G) wireless connectivity and mobile edge computing for offloading this processing to the cloud. To assess this possibility, this paper presents a detailed simulation and evaluation of 5G wireless offloading for object detection within a powerful, new smart wearable called VIS4ION, for the Blind-and-Visually Impaired (BVI). The current VIS4ION system is an instrumented book-bag with high-resolution cameras, vision processing and haptic and audio feedback. The paper considers uploading the camera data to a mobile edge cloud to perform real-time object detection and transmitting the detection results back to the wearable. To determine the video requirements, the paper evaluates the impact of video bit rate and resolution on object detection accuracy and range. A new street scene dataset with labeled objects relevant to BVI navigation is leveraged for analysis. The vision evaluation is combined with a detailed full-stack wireless network simulation to determine the distribution of throughputs and delays with real navigation paths and ray-tracing from new high-resolution 3D models in an urban environment. For comparison, the wireless simulation considers both a standard 4G-Long Term Evolution (LTE) carrier and high-rate 5G millimeter-wave (mmWave) carrier. The work thus provides a thorough and realistic assessment of edge computing with mmWave connectivity in an application with both high bandwidth and low latency requirements.

The performance of a quantum information processing protocol is ultimately judged by distinguishability measures that quantify how distinguishable the actual result of the protocol is from the ideal case. The most prominent distinguishability measures are those based on the fidelity and trace distance, due to their physical interpretations. In this paper, we propose and review several algorithms for estimating distinguishability measures based on trace distance and fidelity. The algorithms can be used for distinguishing quantum states, channels, and strategies (the last also known in the literature as "quantum combs"). The fidelity-based algorithms offer novel physical interpretations of these distinguishability measures in terms of the maximum probability with which a single prover (or competing provers) can convince a verifier to accept the outcome of an associated computation. We simulate many of these algorithms by using a variational approach with parameterized quantum circuits. We find that the simulations converge well in both the noiseless and noisy scenarios, for all examples considered. Furthermore, the noisy simulations exhibit a parameter noise resilience.

Games and simulators can be a valuable platform to execute complex multi-agent, multiplayer, imperfect information scenarios with significant parallels to military applications: multiple participants manage resources and make decisions that command assets to secure specific areas of a map or neutralize opposing forces. These characteristics have attracted the artificial intelligence (AI) community by supporting development of algorithms with complex benchmarks and the capability to rapidly iterate over new ideas. The success of artificial intelligence algorithms in real-time strategy games such as StarCraft II have also attracted the attention of the military research community aiming to explore similar techniques in military counterpart scenarios. Aiming to bridge the connection between games and military applications, this work discusses past and current efforts on how games and simulators, together with the artificial intelligence algorithms, have been adapted to simulate certain aspects of military missions and how they might impact the future battlefield. This paper also investigates how advances in virtual reality and visual augmentation systems open new possibilities in human interfaces with gaming platforms and their military parallels.

Driven by the visions of Internet of Things and 5G communications, the edge computing systems integrate computing, storage and network resources at the edge of the network to provide computing infrastructure, enabling developers to quickly develop and deploy edge applications. Nowadays the edge computing systems have received widespread attention in both industry and academia. To explore new research opportunities and assist users in selecting suitable edge computing systems for specific applications, this survey paper provides a comprehensive overview of the existing edge computing systems and introduces representative projects. A comparison of open source tools is presented according to their applicability. Finally, we highlight energy efficiency and deep learning optimization of edge computing systems. Open issues for analyzing and designing an edge computing system are also studied in this survey.
