Cloud stacks must isolate microservices, while permitting efficient data sharing between isolated services deployed on the same physical host. Traditionally, the MMU enforces isolation and permits sharing at a page granularity. MMU approaches, however, lead to cloud stacks with large TCBs in kernel space, and the page granularity requires inefficient OS interfaces for data sharing. Forthcoming CPUs with hardware support for memory capabilities offer new opportunities to implement isolation and sharing at a finer granularity. We describe cVMs, a new VM-like abstraction that uses memory capabilities to isolate application components while supporting efficient data sharing, all without mandating application code to be capability-aware. cVMs share a single virtual address space safely, each having only capabilities to access its own memory. A cVM may include a library OS, minimizing its dependency on the cloud environment. cVMs efficiently exchange data through two capability-based primitives assisted by a small trusted monitor: (i) an asynchronous read/write interface to buffers shared between cVMs; and (ii) a call interface to transfer control between cVMs. Using these two primitives, we build more expressive mechanisms for efficient cross-cVM communication. Our prototype implementation using CHERI RISC-V capabilities shows that cVMs isolate microservices (Redis and Python) with low overhead while improving data sharing.

The blockchain-based smart contract lacks privacy since the contract state and instruction code are exposed to the public. Combining smart-contract execution with Trusted Execution Environments (TEEs) provides an efficient solution, called TEE-assisted smart contracts, for protecting the confidentiality of contract states. However, the combination approaches are varied, and a systematic study is absent. Newly released systems may fail to draw upon the experience learned from existing protocols, such as repeating known design mistakes or applying TEE technology in insecure ways. In this paper, we first investigate and categorize the existing systems into two types: the layer-one solution and layer-two solution. Then, we establish an analysis framework to capture their common lights, covering the desired properties (for contract services), threat models, and security considerations (for underlying systems). Based on our taxonomy, we identify their ideal functionalities and uncover the fundamental flaws and reasons for the challenges in each specification design. We believe that this work would provide a guide for the development of TEE-assisted smart contracts, as well as a framework to evaluate future TEE-assisted confidential contract systems.

Computer vision systems today are primarily N-purpose systems, designed and trained for a predefined set of tasks. Adapting such systems to new tasks is challenging and often requires non-trivial modifications to the network architecture (e.g. adding new output heads) or training process (e.g. adding new losses). To reduce the time and expertise required to develop new applications, we would like to create general purpose vision systems that can learn and perform a range of tasks without any modification to the architecture or learning process. In this paper, we propose GPV-1, a task-agnostic vision-language architecture that can learn and perform tasks that involve receiving an image and producing text and/or bounding boxes, including classification, localization, visual question answering, captioning, and more. We also propose evaluations of generality of architecture, skill-concept transfer, and learning efficiency that may inform future work on general purpose vision. Our experiments indicate GPV-1 is effective at multiple tasks, reuses some concept knowledge across tasks, can perform the Referring Expressions task zero-shot, and further improves upon the zero-shot performance using a few training samples.

Specifications of complex, large scale, computer software and hardware systems can be radically simplified by using simple maps from input sequences to output values. These "state machine maps" provide an alternative representation of classical Moore type state machines. Composition of state machine maps corresponds to state machine products and can be used to specify essentially any type of interconnection as well as parallel and distributed computation. State machine maps can also specify abstract properties of systems and are significantly more concise and scalable than traditional representations of automata. Examples included here include specifications of producer/consumer software, network distributed consensus, real-time digital circuits, and operating system scheduling. The motivation for this work comes from experience designing and developing operating systems and real-time software where weak methods for understanding and exploring designs is a well known handicap. The methods introduced here are based on ordinary discrete mathematics, primitive recursive functions and deterministic state machines and are intended, initially, to aid the intuition and understanding of the system developers. Staying strictly within the boundaries of classical deterministic state machines anchors the methods to the algebraic structures of automata and semigroups, obviates any need for axiomatic deduction systems, "formal methods", or extensions to the model, and makes the specifications more faithful to engineering practice. While state machine maps are obvious representations of state machines, the techniques introduced here for defining and composing them are novel.

We introduce a subclass of concurrent game structures (CGS) with imperfect information in which agents are endowed with private data-sharing capabilities. Importantly, our CGSs are such that it is still decidable to model-check these CGSs against a relevant fragment of ATL. These systems can be thought as a generalisation of architectures allowing information forks, in the sense that, in the initial states of the system, we allow information forks from agents outside a given set A to agents inside this A. For this reason, together with the fact that the communication in our models underpins a specialised form of broadcast, we call our formalism A-cast systems. To underline, the fragment of ATL for which we show the model-checking problem to be decidable over A-cast is a large and significant one; it expresses coalitions over agents in any subset of the set A. Indeed, as we show, our systems and this ATL fragments can encode security problems that are notoriously hard to express faithfully: terrorist-fraud attacks in identity schemes.

When IP-packet processing is unconditionally carried out on behalf of an operating system kernel thread, processing systems can experience overload in high incoming traffic scenarios. This is especially worrying for embedded real-time devices controlling their physical environment in industrial IoT scenarios and automotive systems. We propose an embedded real-time aware IP stack adaption with an early demultiplexing scheme for incoming packets and subsequent per-flow aperiodic scheduling. By instrumenting existing embedded IP stacks, rigid prioritization with minimal latency is deployed without the need of further task resources. Simple mitigation techniques can be applied to individual flows, causing hardly measurable overhead while at the same time protecting the system from overload conditions. Our IP stack adaption is able to reduce the low-priority packet processing time by over 86% compared to an unmodified stack. The network subsystem can thereby remain active at a 7x higher general traffic load before disabling the receive IRQ as a last resort to assure deadlines.

Multi-Agent Systems (MAS) are notoriously complex and hard to verify. In fact, it is not trivial to model a MAS, and even when a model is built, it is not always possible to verify, in a formal way, that it is actually behaving as we expect. Usually, it is relevant to know whether an agent is capable of fulfilling its own goals. One possible way to check this is through Model Checking. Specifically, by verifying Alternating-time Temporal Logic (ATL) properties, where the notion of strategies for achieving goals can be described. Unfortunately, the resulting model checking problem is not decidable in general. In this paper, we present a verification procedure based on combining Model Checking and Runtime Verification, where sub-models of the MAS model belonging to decidable fragments are verified by a model checker, and runtime monitors are used to verify the rest. Furthermore, we implement our technique and show experimental results.

Developing technology and changing lifestyles have made online grocery delivery applications an indispensable part of urban life. Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the demand for such applications has dramatically increased, creating new competitors that disrupt the market. An increasing level of competition might prompt companies to frequently restructure their marketing and product pricing strategies. Therefore, identifying the change patterns in product prices and sales volumes would provide a competitive advantage for the companies in the marketplace. In this paper, we investigate alternative clustering methodologies to group the products based on the price patterns and sales volumes. We propose a novel distance metric that takes into account how product prices and sales move together rather than calculating the distance using numerical values. We compare our approach with traditional clustering algorithms, which typically rely on generic distance metrics such as Euclidean distance, and image clustering approaches that aim to group data by capturing its visual patterns. We evaluate the performances of different clustering algorithms using our custom evaluation metric as well as Calinski Harabasz and Davies Bouldin indices, which are commonly used internal validity metrics. We conduct our numerical study using a propriety price dataset from an online food and grocery delivery company, and the publicly available Favorita sales dataset. We find that our proposed clustering approach and image clustering both perform well for finding the products with similar price and sales patterns within large datasets.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, most countries have experienced some form of remote education through video conferencing software platforms. However, these software platforms fail to reduce immersion and replicate the classroom experience. The currently emerging Metaverse addresses many of such limitations by offering blended physical-digital environments. This paper aims to assess how the Metaverse can support and improve e-learning. We first survey the latest applications of blended environments in education and highlight the primary challenges and opportunities. Accordingly, we derive our proposal for a virtual-physical blended classroom configuration that brings students and teachers into a shared educational Metaverse. We focus on the system architecture of the Metaverse classroom to achieve real-time synchronization of a large number of participants and activities across physical (mixed reality classrooms) and virtual (remote VR platform) learning spaces. Our proposal attempts to transform the traditional physical classroom into virtual-physical cyberspace as a new social network of learners and educators connected at an unprecedented scale.

Earables (ear wearables) is rapidly emerging as a new platform encompassing a diverse range of personal applications. The traditional authentication methods hence become less applicable and inconvenient for earables due to their limited input interface. Nevertheless, earables often feature rich around-the-head sensing capability that can be leveraged to capture new types of biometrics. In this work, we proposeToothSonic which leverages the toothprint-induced sonic effect produced by users performing teeth gestures for earable authentication. In particular, we design representative teeth gestures that can produce effective sonic waves carrying the information of the toothprint. To reliably capture the acoustic toothprint, it leverages the occlusion effect of the ear canal and the inward-facing microphone of the earables. It then extracts multi-level acoustic features to reflect the intrinsic toothprint information for authentication. The key advantages of ToothSonic are that it is suitable for earables and is resistant to various spoofing attacks as the acoustic toothprint is captured via the user's private teeth-ear channel that modulates and encrypts the sonic waves. Our experiment studies with 25 participants show that ToothSonic achieves up to 95% accuracy with only one of the users' tooth gestures.

Edge intelligence refers to a set of connected systems and devices for data collection, caching, processing, and analysis in locations close to where data is captured based on artificial intelligence. The aim of edge intelligence is to enhance the quality and speed of data processing and protect the privacy and security of the data. Although recently emerged, spanning the period from 2011 to now, this field of research has shown explosive growth over the past five years. In this paper, we present a thorough and comprehensive survey on the literature surrounding edge intelligence. We first identify four fundamental components of edge intelligence, namely edge caching, edge training, edge inference, and edge offloading, based on theoretical and practical results pertaining to proposed and deployed systems. We then aim for a systematic classification of the state of the solutions by examining research results and observations for each of the four components and present a taxonomy that includes practical problems, adopted techniques, and application goals. For each category, we elaborate, compare and analyse the literature from the perspectives of adopted techniques, objectives, performance, advantages and drawbacks, etc. This survey article provides a comprehensive introduction to edge intelligence and its application areas. In addition, we summarise the development of the emerging research field and the current state-of-the-art and discuss the important open issues and possible theoretical and technical solutions.
