Single channel target speaker separation (TSS) aims at extracting a speaker's voice from a mixture of multiple talkers given an enrollment utterance of that speaker. A typical deep learning TSS framework consists of an upstream model that obtains enrollment speaker embeddings and a downstream model that performs the separation conditioned on the embeddings. In this paper, we look into several important but overlooked aspects of the enrollment embeddings, including the suitability of the widely used speaker identification embeddings, the introduction of the log-mel filterbank and self-supervised embeddings, and the embeddings' cross-dataset generalization capability. Our results show that the speaker identification embeddings could lose relevant information due to a sub-optimal metric, training objective, or common pre-processing. In contrast, both the filterbank and the self-supervised embeddings preserve the integrity of the speaker information, but the former consistently outperforms the latter in a cross-dataset evaluation. The competitive separation and generalization performance of the previously overlooked filterbank embedding is consistent across our study, which calls for future research on better upstream features.

A lot of theoretical and empirical evidence shows that the flatter local minima tend to improve generalization. Adversarial Weight Perturbation (AWP) is an emerging technique to efficiently and effectively find such minima. In AWP we minimize the loss w.r.t. a bounded worst-case perturbation of the model parameters thereby favoring local minima with a small loss in a neighborhood around them. The benefits of AWP, and more generally the connections between flatness and generalization, have been extensively studied for i.i.d. data such as images. In this paper, we extensively study this phenomenon for graph data. Along the way, we first derive a generalization bound for non-i.i.d. node classification tasks. Then we identify a vanishing-gradient issue with all existing formulations of AWP and we propose a new Weighted Truncated AWP (WT-AWP) to alleviate this issue. We show that regularizing graph neural networks with WT-AWP consistently improves both natural and robust generalization across many different graph learning tasks and models.

The explosive growth of various types of big data and advances in AI technologies have catalyzed a new type of applications called multi-modal DNNs. Multi-modal DNNs are capable of interpreting and reasoning about information from multiple modalities, making them more applicable to real-world AI scenarios. In recent research, multi-modal DNNs have outperformed the best uni-modal DNN in a wide range of applications from traditional multimedia to emerging autonomous systems. However, despite their importance and superiority, very limited research attention has been devoted to understand the characteristics of multi-modal DNNs and their implications on current computing software/hardware platforms. To facilitate research and advance the understanding of these multi-modal DNN workloads, we first present MMbench, an open-source benchmark suite consisting of a set of real-world multi-modal DNN workloads with relevant performance metrics for evaluation. Then we use MMbench to conduct an in-depth analysis on the characteristics of multi-modal DNNs. We study their implications on application and programming framework, operating and scheduling system, as well as execution hardware. Finally, we conduct a case study and extend our benchmark to edge devices. We hope that our work can provide guidance for future software/hardware design and optimization to underpin multi-modal DNNs on both cloud and edge computing platforms.

Recent developments in neural speech synthesis and vocoding have sparked a renewed interest in voice conversion (VC). Beyond timbre transfer, achieving controllability on para-linguistic parameters such as pitch and Speed is critical in deploying VC systems in many application scenarios. Existing studies, however, either only provide utterance-level global control or lack interpretability on the controls. In this paper, we propose ControlVC, the first neural voice conversion system that achieves time-varying controls on pitch and speed. ControlVC uses pre-trained encoders to compute pitch and linguistic embeddings from the source utterance and speaker embeddings from the target utterance. These embeddings are then concatenated and converted to speech using a vocoder. It achieves speed control through TD-PSOLA pre-processing on the source utterance, and achieves pitch control by manipulating the pitch contour before feeding it to the pitch encoder. Systematic subjective and objective evaluations are conducted to assess the speech quality and controllability. Results show that, on non-parallel and zero-shot conversion tasks, ControlVC significantly outperforms two other self-constructed baselines on speech quality, and it can successfully achieve time-varying pitch and speed control.

Existing knowledge graph (KG) embedding models have primarily focused on static KGs. However, real-world KGs do not remain static, but rather evolve and grow in tandem with the development of KG applications. Consequently, new facts and previously unseen entities and relations continually emerge, necessitating an embedding model that can quickly learn and transfer new knowledge through growth. Motivated by this, we delve into an expanding field of KG embedding in this paper, i.e., lifelong KG embedding. We consider knowledge transfer and retention of the learning on growing snapshots of a KG without having to learn embeddings from scratch. The proposed model includes a masked KG autoencoder for embedding learning and update, with an embedding transfer strategy to inject the learned knowledge into the new entity and relation embeddings, and an embedding regularization method to avoid catastrophic forgetting. To investigate the impacts of different aspects of KG growth, we construct four datasets to evaluate the performance of lifelong KG embedding. Experimental results show that the proposed model outperforms the state-of-the-art inductive and lifelong embedding baselines.

Knowledge graph embedding (KGE) is a increasingly popular technique that aims to represent entities and relations of knowledge graphs into low-dimensional semantic spaces for a wide spectrum of applications such as link prediction, knowledge reasoning and knowledge completion. In this paper, we provide a systematic review of existing KGE techniques based on representation spaces. Particularly, we build a fine-grained classification to categorise the models based on three mathematical perspectives of the representation spaces: (1) Algebraic perspective, (2) Geometric perspective, and (3) Analytical perspective. We introduce the rigorous definitions of fundamental mathematical spaces before diving into KGE models and their mathematical properties. We further discuss different KGE methods over the three categories, as well as summarise how spatial advantages work over different embedding needs. By collating the experimental results from downstream tasks, we also explore the advantages of mathematical space in different scenarios and the reasons behind them. We further state some promising research directions from a representation space perspective, with which we hope to inspire researchers to design their KGE models as well as their related applications with more consideration of their mathematical space properties.

Deep learning models on graphs have achieved remarkable performance in various graph analysis tasks, e.g., node classification, link prediction and graph clustering. However, they expose uncertainty and unreliability against the well-designed inputs, i.e., adversarial examples. Accordingly, various studies have emerged for both attack and defense addressed in different graph analysis tasks, leading to the arms race in graph adversarial learning. For instance, the attacker has poisoning and evasion attack, and the defense group correspondingly has preprocessing- and adversarial- based methods. Despite the booming works, there still lacks a unified problem definition and a comprehensive review. To bridge this gap, we investigate and summarize the existing works on graph adversarial learning tasks systemically. Specifically, we survey and unify the existing works w.r.t. attack and defense in graph analysis tasks, and give proper definitions and taxonomies at the same time. Besides, we emphasize the importance of related evaluation metrics, and investigate and summarize them comprehensively. Hopefully, our works can serve as a reference for the relevant researchers, thus providing assistance for their studies. Graph Neural Networks (GNNs), which generalize deep neural networks to graph-structured data, have drawn considerable attention and achieved state-of-the-art performance in numerous graph related tasks. However, existing GNN models mainly focus on designing graph convolution operations. The graph pooling (or downsampling) operations, that play an important role in learning hierarchical representations, are usually overlooked. In this paper, we propose a novel graph pooling operator, called Hierarchical Graph Pooling with Structure Learning (HGP-SL), which can be integrated into various graph neural network architectures. HGP-SL incorporates graph pooling and structure learning into a unified module to generate hierarchical representations of graphs. More specifically, the graph pooling operation adaptively selects a subset of nodes to form an induced subgraph for the subsequent layers. To preserve the integrity of graph's topological information, we further introduce a structure learning mechanism to learn a refined graph structure for the pooled graph at each layer. By combining HGP-SL operator with graph neural networks, we perform graph level representation learning with focus on graph classification task. Experimental results on six widely used benchmarks demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed model.

Object detection is considered as one of the most challenging problems in computer vision, since it requires correct prediction of both classes and locations of objects in images. In this study, we define a more difficult scenario, namely zero-shot object detection (ZSD) where no visual training data is available for some of the target object classes. We present a novel approach to tackle this ZSD problem, where a convex combination of embeddings are used in conjunction with a detection framework. For evaluation of ZSD methods, we propose a simple dataset constructed from Fashion-MNIST images and also a custom zero-shot split for the Pascal VOC detection challenge. The experimental results suggest that our method yields promising results for ZSD.

We consider the problem of zero-shot recognition: learning a visual classifier for a category with zero training examples, just using the word embedding of the category and its relationship to other categories, which visual data are provided. The key to dealing with the unfamiliar or novel category is to transfer knowledge obtained from familiar classes to describe the unfamiliar class. In this paper, we build upon the recently introduced Graph Convolutional Network (GCN) and propose an approach that uses both semantic embeddings and the categorical relationships to predict the classifiers. Given a learned knowledge graph (KG), our approach takes as input semantic embeddings for each node (representing visual category). After a series of graph convolutions, we predict the visual classifier for each category. During training, the visual classifiers for a few categories are given to learn the GCN parameters. At test time, these filters are used to predict the visual classifiers of unseen categories. We show that our approach is robust to noise in the KG. More importantly, our approach provides significant improvement in performance compared to the current state-of-the-art results (from 2 ~ 3% on some metrics to whopping 20% on a few).

Multi-view networks are ubiquitous in real-world applications. In order to extract knowledge or business value, it is of interest to transform such networks into representations that are easily machine-actionable. Meanwhile, network embedding has emerged as an effective approach to generate distributed network representations. Therefore, we are motivated to study the problem of multi-view network embedding, with a focus on the characteristics that are specific and important in embedding this type of networks. In our practice of embedding real-world multi-view networks, we identify two such characteristics, which we refer to as preservation and collaboration. We then explore the feasibility of achieving better embedding quality by simultaneously modeling preservation and collaboration, and propose the mvn2vec algorithms. With experiments on a series of synthetic datasets, an internal Snapchat dataset, and two public datasets, we further confirm the presence and importance of preservation and collaboration. These experiments also demonstrate that better embedding can be obtained by simultaneously modeling the two characteristics, while not over-complicating the model or requiring additional supervision.
