We consider a general multi-connectivity framework, intended for ultra-reliable low-latency communications (URLLC) services, and propose a novel, preallocation-based combinatorial auction approach for the efficient allocation of channels. We compare the performance of the proposed method with several other state-of-the-art and alternative channel-allocation algorithms. The two proposed performance metrics are the capacity-based and the utility-based context. In the first case, every unit of additional capacity is regarded as beneficial for any tenant, independent of the already allocated quantity, and the main measure is the total throughput of the system. In the second case, we assume a minimal and maximal required capacity value for each tenant, and consider the implied utility values accordingly. In addition to the total system performance, we also analyze fairness and computational requirements in both contexts. We conclude that at the cost of higher but still plausible computational time, the fairness-enhanced version of the proposed preallocation based combinatorial auction algorithm outperforms every other considered method when one considers total system performance and fairness simultaneously, and performs especially well in the utility context. Therefore, the proposed algorithm may be regarded as candidate scheme for URLLC channel allocation problems, where minimal and maximal capacity requirements have to be considered.

In today's digital world, interaction with online platforms is ubiquitous, and thus content moderation is important for protecting users from content that do not comply with pre-established community guidelines. Having a robust content moderation system throughout every stage of planning is particularly important. We study the short-term planning problem of allocating human content reviewers to different harmful content categories. We use tools from fair division and study the application of competitive equilibrium and leximin allocation rules. Furthermore, we incorporate, to the traditional Fisher market setup, novel aspects that are of practical importance. The first aspect is the forecasted workload of different content categories. We show how a formulation that is inspired by the celebrated Eisenberg-Gale program allows us to find an allocation that not only satisfies the forecasted workload, but also fairly allocates the remaining reviewing hours among all content categories. The resulting allocation is also robust as the additional allocation provides a guardrail in cases where the actual workload deviates from the predicted workload. The second practical consideration is time dependent allocation that is motivated by the fact that partners need scheduling guidance for the reviewers across days to achieve efficiency. To address the time component, we introduce new extensions of the various fair allocation approaches for the single-time period setting, and we show that many properties extend in essence, albeit with some modifications. Related to the time component, we additionally investigate how to satisfy markets' desire for smooth allocation (e.g., partners for content reviewers prefer an allocation that does not vary much from time to time, to minimize staffing switch). We demonstrate the performance of our proposed approaches through real-world data obtained from Meta.

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) have emerged as a prospective technology for next-generation wireless networks due to their potential in coverage and capacity enhancement. The analysis and optimization of ergodic capacity for RIS-assisted communication systems have been investigated extensively. However, the Rayleigh or Rician channel model is usually utilized in the existing work, which is not suitable for millimeter-wave (mmWave) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. Thus, we fill the gap and consider the ergodic capacity of RIS-assisted mmWave MIMO communication systems under the Saleh-Valenzuela channel model. Firstly, we derive tight approximations of ergodic capacity and a tight upper bound in high signal-to-noise ratio regime. Then, we aim to maximize the ergodic capacity by jointly designing the transmit covariance matrix at the base station and the reflection coefficients at the RIS. Specifically, the transmit covariance matrix is optimized by the water-filling algorithm and the reflection coefficients are optimized using the Riemanian conjugate gradient algorithm. Simulation results validate the tightness of the derived ergodic capacity approximations and the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms.

This paper considers a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided millimeter wave (mmWave) downlink communication system where hybrid analog-digital beamforming is employed at the base station (BS). We formulate a power minimization problem by jointly optimizing hybrid beamforming at the BS and the response matrix at the RIS, under the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) constraints at all users. The problem is highly challenging to solve due to the non-convex SINR constraints as well as the unit-modulus phase shift constraints for both the RIS reflection coefficients and the analog beamformer. A two-layer penalty-based algorithm is proposed to decouple variables in SINR constraints, and manifold optimization is adopted to handle the non-convex unit-modulus constraints. {We also propose a low-complexity sequential optimization method, which optimizes the RIS reflection coefficients, the analog beamformer, and the digital beamformer sequentially without iteration.} Furthermore, the relationship between the power minimization problem and the max-min fairness (MMF) problem is discussed. Simulation results show that the proposed penalty-based algorithm outperforms the state-of-the-art semidefinite relaxation (SDR)-based algorithm. Results also demonstrate that the RIS plays an important role in the power reduction.

The fair $k$-median problem is one of the important clustering problems. The current best approximation ratio is 4.675 for this problem with 1-fair violation, which was proposed by Bercea et al. [APPROX-RANDOM'2019]. As far as we know, there is no available approximation algorithm for the problem without any fair violation. In this paper, we consider the fair $k$-median problem in bounded doubling metrics and general metrics. We provide the first QPTAS for fair $k$-median problem in doubling metrics. Based on the split-tree decomposition of doubling metrics, we present a dynamic programming process to find the candidate centers, and apply min-cost max-flow method to deal with the assignment of clients. Especially, for overcoming the difficulties caused by the fair constraints, we construct an auxiliary graph and use minimum weighted perfect matching to get part of the cost. For the fair $k$-median problem in general metrics, we present an approximation algorithm with ratio $O(\log k)$, which is based on the embedding of given space into tree metrics, and the dynamic programming method. Our two approximation algorithms for the fair $k$-median problem are the first results for the corresponding problems without any fair violation, respectively.

Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems greatly increase the overall throughput of wireless systems since they are capable of transmitting multiple streams employing the same time-frequency resources. However, this gain requires an appropriate precoder design and a power allocation technique. In general, precoders and power allocation schemes are designed assuming perfect channel estate information (CSI). Nonetheless, this is an optimistic assumption since real systems only possess partial or imperfect CSI at the transmitter (CSIT). The imperfect CSIT originates residual inter-user interference, which is detrimental for wireless systems. In this paper, two adaptive power allocation algorithms are proposed, which are more robust against CSIT imperfections than conventional techniques. Both techniques employ the mean square error as the objective function. Simulation results show that the proposed techniques obtain a higher performance in terms of sum-rate than conventional approaches.

The new generation of communication technologies are constantly being pushed to meet a diverse range of user requirements such as high data rate, low power consumption, very low latency, very high reliability and broad availability. To address all these demands, 5G radio access technologies have been extended into a wide range of new services. However, there are still only a limited number of applications for RF based wireless communications inside aircraft cabins that comply with the 5G vision. Potential interference and safety issues in on-board wireless communications pose significant deployment challenges. By transforming each reading light into an optical wireless AP, LiFi, could provide seamless on-board connectivity in dense cabin environments without RF interference. Furthermore, the utilization of available reading lights allows for a relatively simple, cost-effective deployment with the high energy and spectral efficiency. To successfully implement the aeronautical cabin LiFi applications, comprehensive optical channel characterization is required. In this paper, we propose a novel MCRT channel modelling technique to capture the details of in-flight LiFi links. Accordingly, a realistic channel simulator, which takes the cabin models, interior elements and measurement based optical source, receiver, surface material characteristics into account is developed. The effect of the operation wavelength, cabin model accuracy and user terminal mobility on the optical channel conditions is also investigated. As a final step, the on-board DCO-OFDM performance is evaluated by using obtained in-flight LiFi channels. Numerical results show that the location of a mobile terminal and accurate aircraft cabin modelling yield as much as 12 and 2 dB performance difference, respectively.

In this paper we study temporal design problems of undirected temporally connected graphs. The basic setting of these optimization problems is as follows: given an undirected graph $G$, what is the smallest number $|\lambda|$ of time-labels that we need to add to the edges of $G$ such that the resulting temporal graph $(G,\lambda)$ is temporally connected? As we prove, this basic problem, called MINIMUM LABELING, can be optimally solved in polynomial time, thus resolving an open question. The situation becomes however more complicated if we strengthen, or even if we relax a bit, the requirement of temporal connectivity of $(G,\lambda)$. One way to strengthen the temporal connectivity requirements is to upper-bound the allowed age (i.e., maximum label) of the obtained temporal graph $(G,\lambda)$. On the other hand, we can relax temporal connectivity by only requiring that there exists a temporal path between any pair of ``important'' vertices which lie in a subset $R\subseteq V$, which we call the terminals. This relaxed problem, called MINIMUM STEINER LABELING, resembles the problem STEINER TREE in static (i.e., non-temporal) graphs; however, as it turns out, STEINER TREE is not a special case of MINIMUM STEINER LABELING. We prove that MINIMUM STEINER LABELING is NP-hard and in FPT with respect to the number $|R|$ of terminals. Moreover, we prove that, adding the age restriction makes the above problems strictly harder (unless P=NP or W[1]=FPT). More specifically, we prove that the age-restricted version of MINIMUM LABELING becomes NP-complete on undirected graphs, while the age-restricted version of MINIMUM STEINER LABELING becomes W[1]-hard with respect to the number $|R|$ of terminals.

Fog-assisted 5G Networks allow the users within the networks to execute their tasks and processes through fog nodes and cooperation among the fog nodes. As a result, the delay in task execution reduces as compared to that in case of independent task execution, where the Base Station (BS) or server is directly involved. In the practical scenario, the ability to cooperate clearly depends on the willingness of fog nodes to cooperate. Hence, in this paper, we propose an incentive-based bargaining approach which encourages the fog nodes to cooperate among themselves by receiving incentives from the end users benefitting from the cooperation. Considering the heterogenous nature of users and fog nodes based on their storage capacity, energy efficiency etc., we aim to emphasise a fair incentive mechanism which fairly and uniformly distributes the incentives from user to the participating fog nodes. The proposed incentive-based cooperative approach reduces the cost of end users as well as balances the energy consumption of fog nodes. The proposed system model addresses and models the above approaches and mathematically formulate cost models for both fog nodes and the end users in a fog-assisted 5G network.

Recent work has proposed stochastic Plackett-Luce (PL) ranking models as a robust choice for optimizing relevance and fairness metrics. Unlike their deterministic counterparts that require heuristic optimization algorithms, PL models are fully differentiable. Theoretically, they can be used to optimize ranking metrics via stochastic gradient descent. However, in practice, the computation of the gradient is infeasible because it requires one to iterate over all possible permutations of items. Consequently, actual applications rely on approximating the gradient via sampling techniques. In this paper, we introduce a novel algorithm: PL-Rank, that estimates the gradient of a PL ranking model w.r.t. both relevance and fairness metrics. Unlike existing approaches that are based on policy gradients, PL-Rank makes use of the specific structure of PL models and ranking metrics. Our experimental analysis shows that PL-Rank has a greater sample-efficiency and is computationally less costly than existing policy gradients, resulting in faster convergence at higher performance. PL-Rank further enables the industry to apply PL models for more relevant and fairer real-world ranking systems.

Developing classification algorithms that are fair with respect to sensitive attributes of the data has become an important problem due to the growing deployment of classification algorithms in various social contexts. Several recent works have focused on fairness with respect to a specific metric, modeled the corresponding fair classification problem as a constrained optimization problem, and developed tailored algorithms to solve them. Despite this, there still remain important metrics for which we do not have fair classifiers and many of the aforementioned algorithms do not come with theoretical guarantees; perhaps because the resulting optimization problem is non-convex. The main contribution of this paper is a new meta-algorithm for classification that takes as input a large class of fairness constraints, with respect to multiple non-disjoint sensitive attributes, and which comes with provable guarantees. This is achieved by first developing a meta-algorithm for a large family of classification problems with convex constraints, and then showing that classification problems with general types of fairness constraints can be reduced to those in this family. We present empirical results that show that our algorithm can achieve near-perfect fairness with respect to various fairness metrics, and that the loss in accuracy due to the imposed fairness constraints is often small. Overall, this work unifies several prior works on fair classification, presents a practical algorithm with theoretical guarantees, and can handle fairness metrics that were previously not possible.
