The planted densest subgraph detection problem refers to the task of testing whether in a given (random) graph there is a subgraph that is unusually dense. Specifically, we observe an undirected and unweighted graph on $n$ nodes. Under the null hypothesis, the graph is a realization of an Erd\H{o}s-R\'{e}nyi graph with edge probability (or, density) $q$. Under the alternative, there is a subgraph on $k$ vertices with edge probability $p>q$. The statistical as well as the computational barriers of this problem are well-understood for a wide range of the edge parameters $p$ and $q$. In this paper, we consider a natural variant of the above problem, where one can only observe a small part of the graph using adaptive edge queries. For this model, we determine the number of queries necessary and sufficient for detecting the presence of the planted subgraph. Specifically, we show that any (possibly randomized) algorithm must make $\mathsf{Q} = \Omega(\frac{n^2}{k^2\chi^4(p||q)}\log^2n)$ adaptive queries (on expectation) to the adjacency matrix of the graph to detect the planted subgraph with probability more than $1/2$, where $\chi^2(p||q)$ is the Chi-Square distance. On the other hand, we devise a quasi-polynomial-time algorithm that detects the planted subgraph with high probability by making $\mathsf{Q} = O(\frac{n^2}{k^2\chi^4(p||q)}\log^2n)$ non-adaptive queries. We then propose a polynomial-time algorithm which is able to detect the planted subgraph using $\mathsf{Q} = O(\frac{n^3}{k^3\chi^2(p||q)}\log^3 n)$ queries. We conjecture that in the leftover regime, where $\frac{n^2}{k^2}\ll\mathsf{Q}\ll \frac{n^3}{k^3}$, no polynomial-time algorithms exist. Our results resolve two questions posed in \cite{racz2020finding}, where the special case of adaptive detection and recovery of a planted clique was considered.

Interrupt-driven programs are widely deployed in safety-critical embedded systems to perform hardware and resource dependent data operation tasks. The frequent use of interrupts in these systems can cause race conditions to occur due to interactions between application tasks and interrupt handlers (or two interrupt handlers). Numerous program analysis and testing techniques have been proposed to detect races in multithreaded programs. Little work, however, has addressed race condition problems related to hardware interrupts. In this paper, we present SDRacer, an automated framework that can detect, validate and repair race conditions in interrupt-driven embedded software. It uses a combination of static analysis and symbolic execution to generate input data for exercising the potential races. It then employs virtual platforms to dynamically validate these races by forcing the interrupts to occur at the potential racing points. Finally, it provides repair candidates to eliminate the detected races. We evaluate SDRacer on nine real-world embedded programs written in C language. The results show that SDRacer can precisely detect and successfully fix race conditions.

In active speaker detection (ASD), we would like to detect whether an on-screen person is speaking based on audio-visual cues. Previous studies have primarily focused on modeling audio-visual synchronization cue, which depends on the video quality of the lip region of a speaker. In real-world applications, it is possible that we can also have the reference speech of the on-screen speaker. To benefit from both facial cue and reference speech, we propose the Target Speaker TalkNet (TS-TalkNet), which leverages a pre-enrolled speaker embedding to complement the audio-visual synchronization cue in detecting whether the target speaker is speaking. Our framework outperforms the popular model, TalkNet on two datasets, achieving absolute improvements of 1.6\% in mAP on the AVA-ActiveSpeaker validation set, and 0.8\%, 0.4\%, and 0.8\% in terms of AP, AUC and EER on the ASW test set, respectively. In this work, we propose an efficient two-stage algorithm solving a joint problem of correlation detection and partial alignment recovery between two Gaussian databases. Correlation detection is a hypothesis testing problem; under the null hypothesis, the databases are independent, and under the alternate hypothesis, they are correlated, under an unknown row permutation. We develop bounds on the type-I and type-II error probabilities, and show that the analyzed detector performs better than a recently proposed detector, at least for some specific parameter choices. Since the proposed detector relies on a statistic, which is a sum of dependent indicator random variables, then in order to bound the type-I probability of error, we develop a novel graph-theoretic technique for bounding the $k$-th order moments of such statistics. When the databases are accepted as correlated, the algorithm also recovers some partial alignment between the given databases. We also propose two more algorithms: (i) One more algorithm for partial alignment recovery, whose reliability and computational complexity are both higher than those of the first proposed algorithm. (ii) An algorithm for full alignment recovery, which has a reduced amount of calculations and a not much lower error probability, when compared to the optimal recovery procedure.

Reasoning over knowledge graphs (KGs) is a challenging task that requires a deep understanding of the complex relationships between entities and the underlying logic of their relations. Current approaches rely on learning geometries to embed entities in vector space for logical query operations, but they suffer from subpar performance on complex queries and dataset-specific representations. In this paper, we propose a novel decoupled approach, Language-guided Abstract Reasoning over Knowledge graphs (LARK), that formulates complex KG reasoning as a combination of contextual KG search and logical query reasoning, to leverage the strengths of graph extraction algorithms and large language models (LLM), respectively. Our experiments demonstrate that the proposed approach outperforms state-of-the-art KG reasoning methods on standard benchmark datasets across several logical query constructs, with significant performance gain for queries of higher complexity. Furthermore, we show that the performance of our approach improves proportionally to the increase in size of the underlying LLM, enabling the integration of the latest advancements in LLMs for logical reasoning over KGs. Our work presents a new direction for addressing the challenges of complex KG reasoning and paves the way for future research in this area.

This paper focuses on two fundamental tasks of graph analysis: community detection and node representation learning, which capture the global and local structures of graphs, respectively. In the current literature, these two tasks are usually independently studied while they are actually highly correlated. We propose a probabilistic generative model called vGraph to learn community membership and node representation collaboratively. Specifically, we assume that each node can be represented as a mixture of communities, and each community is defined as a multinomial distribution over nodes. Both the mixing coefficients and the community distribution are parameterized by the low-dimensional representations of the nodes and communities. We designed an effective variational inference algorithm which regularizes the community membership of neighboring nodes to be similar in the latent space. Experimental results on multiple real-world graphs show that vGraph is very effective in both community detection and node representation learning, outperforming many competitive baselines in both tasks. We show that the framework of vGraph is quite flexible and can be easily extended to detect hierarchical communities.

Benefit from the quick development of deep learning techniques, salient object detection has achieved remarkable progresses recently. However, there still exists following two major challenges that hinder its application in embedded devices, low resolution output and heavy model weight. To this end, this paper presents an accurate yet compact deep network for efficient salient object detection. More specifically, given a coarse saliency prediction in the deepest layer, we first employ residual learning to learn side-output residual features for saliency refinement, which can be achieved with very limited convolutional parameters while keep accuracy. Secondly, we further propose reverse attention to guide such side-output residual learning in a top-down manner. By erasing the current predicted salient regions from side-output features, the network can eventually explore the missing object parts and details which results in high resolution and accuracy. Experiments on six benchmark datasets demonstrate that the proposed approach compares favorably against state-of-the-art methods, and with advantages in terms of simplicity, efficiency (45 FPS) and model size (81 MB).

It is a common paradigm in object detection frameworks to treat all samples equally and target at maximizing the performance on average. In this work, we revisit this paradigm through a careful study on how different samples contribute to the overall performance measured in terms of mAP. Our study suggests that the samples in each mini-batch are neither independent nor equally important, and therefore a better classifier on average does not necessarily mean higher mAP. Motivated by this study, we propose the notion of Prime Samples, those that play a key role in driving the detection performance. We further develop a simple yet effective sampling and learning strategy called PrIme Sample Attention (PISA) that directs the focus of the training process towards such samples. Our experiments demonstrate that it is often more effective to focus on prime samples than hard samples when training a detector. Particularly, On the MSCOCO dataset, PISA outperforms the random sampling baseline and hard mining schemes, e.g. OHEM and Focal Loss, consistently by more than 1% on both single-stage and two-stage detectors, with a strong backbone ResNeXt-101.

We introduce a generic framework that reduces the computational cost of object detection while retaining accuracy for scenarios where objects with varied sizes appear in high resolution images. Detection progresses in a coarse-to-fine manner, first on a down-sampled version of the image and then on a sequence of higher resolution regions identified as likely to improve the detection accuracy. Built upon reinforcement learning, our approach consists of a model (R-net) that uses coarse detection results to predict the potential accuracy gain for analyzing a region at a higher resolution and another model (Q-net) that sequentially selects regions to zoom in. Experiments on the Caltech Pedestrians dataset show that our approach reduces the number of processed pixels by over 50% without a drop in detection accuracy. The merits of our approach become more significant on a high resolution test set collected from YFCC100M dataset, where our approach maintains high detection performance while reducing the number of processed pixels by about 70% and the detection time by over 50%.

Detecting carried objects is one of the requirements for developing systems to reason about activities involving people and objects. We present an approach to detect carried objects from a single video frame with a novel method that incorporates features from multiple scales. Initially, a foreground mask in a video frame is segmented into multi-scale superpixels. Then the human-like regions in the segmented area are identified by matching a set of extracted features from superpixels against learned features in a codebook. A carried object probability map is generated using the complement of the matching probabilities of superpixels to human-like regions and background information. A group of superpixels with high carried object probability and strong edge support is then merged to obtain the shape of the carried object. We applied our method to two challenging datasets, and results show that our method is competitive with or better than the state-of-the-art.
