When expressed in Lagrangian variables, the equations of motion for compressible (barotropic) fluids have the structure of a classical Hamiltonian system in which the potential energy is given by the internal energy of the fluid. The dissipative counterpart of such a system coincides with the porous medium equation, which can be cast in the form of a gradient flow for the same internal energy. Motivated by these related variational structures, we propose a particle method for both problems in which the internal energy is replaced by its Moreau-Yosida regularization in the L2 sense, which can be efficiently computed as a semi-discrete optimal transport problem. Using a modulated energy argument which exploits the convexity of the problem in Eulerian variables, we prove quantitative convergence estimates towards smooth solutions. We verify such estimates by means of several numerical tests.
We present a general family of subcell limiting strategies to construct robust high-order accurate nodal discontinuous Galerkin (DG) schemes. The main strategy is to construct compatible low order finite volume (FV) type discretizations that allow for convex blending with the high-order variant with the goal of guaranteeing additional properties, such as bounds on physical quantities and/or guaranteed entropy dissipation. For an implementation of this main strategy, four main ingredients are identified that may be combined in a flexible manner: (i) a nodal high-order DG method on Legendre-Gauss-Lobatto nodes, (ii) a compatible robust subcell FV scheme, (iii) a convex combination strategy for the two schemes, which can be element-wise or subcell-wise, and (iv) a strategy to compute the convex blending factors, which can be either based on heuristic troubled-cell indicators, or using ideas from flux-corrected transport methods. By carefully designing the metric terms of the subcell FV method, the resulting methods can be used on unstructured curvilinear meshes, are locally conservative, can handle strong shocks efficiently while directly guaranteeing physical bounds on quantities such as density, pressure or entropy. We further show that it is possible to choose the four ingredients to recover existing methods such as a provably entropy dissipative subcell shock-capturing approach or a sparse invariant domain preserving approach. We test the versatility of the presented strategies and mix and match the four ingredients to solve challenging simulation setups, such as the KPP problem (a hyperbolic conservation law with non-convex flux function), turbulent and hypersonic Euler simulations, and MHD problems featuring shocks and turbulence.
We consider a semi-discrete finite volume scheme for a degenerate fractional conservation laws driven by a cylindrical Wiener process. Making use of the bounded variation (BV) estimates, Young measure theory, and a clever adaptation of classical Kruzkov theory, we provide estimates on the rate of convergence for approximate solutions to fractional problems. The main difficulty stems from the degenerate fractional operator, and requires a significant departure from the existing strategy to establish Kato's type of inequality. Finally, as an application of this theory, we demonstrate numerical convergence rates.
This paper presents a new parameter free partially penalized immersed finite element method and convergence analysis for solving second order elliptic interface problems. A lifting operator is introduced on interface edges to ensure the coercivity of the method without requiring an ad-hoc stabilization parameter. The optimal approximation capabilities of the immersed finite element space is proved via a novel new approach that is much simpler than that in the literature. A new trace inequality which is necessary to prove the optimal convergence of immersed finite element methods is established on interface elements. Optimal error estimates are derived rigorously with the constant independent of the interface location relative to the mesh. The new method and analysis have also been extended to variable coefficients and three-dimensional problems. Numerical examples are also provided to confirm the theoretical analysis and efficiency of the new method.
In this paper, we present convergence analysis of high-order finite element based methods, in particular, we focus on a discontinuous Galerkin scheme using summation-by-parts operators. To this end, it is crucial that structure preserving properties, such as positivity preservation and entropy inequality hold. We demonstrate how to ensure them and prove the convergence of our multidimensional high-order DG scheme via dissipative weak solutions. In numerical simulations, we verify our theoretical results.
We consider the Cauchy problem for a second-order nonlinear evolution equation in a Hilbert space. This equation represents the abstract generalization of the Ball integro-differential equation. The general nonlinear case with respect to terms of the equation which include a square of a norm of a gradient is considered. A three-layer semi-discrete scheme is proposed in order to find an approximate solution. In this scheme, the approximation of nonlinear terms that are dependent on the gradient is carried out by using an integral mean. We show that the solution of the nonlinear discrete problem and its corresponding difference analogue of a first-order derivative is uniformly bounded. For the solution of the corresponding linear discrete problem, it is obtained high-order a priori estimates by using two-variable Chebyshev polynomials. Based on these estimates we prove the stability of the nonlinear discrete problem. For smooth solutions, we provide error estimates for the approximate solution. An iteration method is applied in order to find an approximate solution for each temporal step. The convergence of the iteration process is proved.
This paper presents local minimax regret lower bounds for adaptively controlling linear-quadratic-Gaussian (LQG) systems. We consider smoothly parametrized instances and provide an understanding of when logarithmic regret is impossible which is both instance specific and flexible enough to take problem structure into account. This understanding relies on two key notions: That of local-uninformativeness; when the optimal policy does not provide sufficient excitation for identification of the optimal policy, and yields a degenerate Fisher information matrix; and that of information-regret-boundedness, when the small eigenvalues of a policy-dependent information matrix are boundable in terms of the regret of that policy. Combined with a reduction to Bayesian estimation and application of Van Trees' inequality, these two conditions are sufficient for proving regret bounds on order of magnitude $\sqrt{T}$ in the time horizon, $T$. This method yields lower bounds that exhibit tight dimensional dependencies and scale naturally with control-theoretic problem constants. For instance, we are able to prove that systems operating near marginal stability are fundamentally hard to learn to control. We further show that large classes of systems satisfy these conditions, among them any state-feedback system with both $A$- and $B$-matrices unknown. Most importantly, we also establish that a nontrivial class of partially observable systems, essentially those that are over-actuated, satisfy these conditions, thus providing a $\sqrt{T}$ lower bound also valid for partially observable systems. Finally, we turn to two simple examples which demonstrate that our lower bound captures classical control-theoretic intuition: our lower bounds diverge for systems operating near marginal stability or with large filter gain -- these can be arbitrarily hard to (learn to) control.
This paper is concerned with a numerical solution to the scattering of a time-harmonic electromagnetic wave by a bounded and impenetrable obstacle in three dimensions. The electromagnetic wave propagation is modeled by a boundary value problem of Maxwell's equations in the exterior domain of the obstacle. Based on the Dirichlet-to-Neumann (DtN) operator, which is defined by an infinite series, an exact transparent boundary condition is introduced and the scattering problem is reduced equivalently into a bounded domain. An a posteriori error estimate based adaptive finite element DtN method is developed to solve the discrete variational problem, where the DtN operator is truncated into a sum of finitely many terms. The a posteriori error estimate takes into account both the finite element approximation error and the truncation error of the DtN operator. The latter is shown to decay exponentially with respect to the truncation parameter. Numerical experiments are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.
The scope of this paper is the analysis and approximation of an optimal control problem related to the Allen-Cahn equation. A tracking functional is minimized subject to the Allen-Cahn equation using distributed controls that satisfy point-wise control constraints. First and second order necessary and sufficient conditions are proved. The lowest order discontinuous Galerkin - in time - scheme is considered for the approximation of the control to state and adjoint state mappings. Under a suitable restriction on maximum size of the temporal and spatial discretization parameters $k$, $h$ respectively in terms of the parameter $\epsilon$ that describes the thickness of the interface layer, a-priori estimates are proved with constants depending polynomially upon $1/ \epsilon$. Unlike to previous works for the uncontrolled Allen-Cahn problem our approach does not rely on a construction of an approximation of the spectral estimate, and as a consequence our estimates are valid under low regularity assumptions imposed by the optimal control setting. These estimates are also valid in cases where the solution and its discrete approximation do not satisfy uniform space-time bounds independent of $\epsilon$. These estimates and a suitable localization technique, via the second order condition (see \cite{Arada-Casas-Troltzsch_2002,Casas-Mateos-Troltzsch_2005,Casas-Raymond_2006,Casas-Mateos-Raymond_2007}), allows to prove error estimates for the difference between local optimal controls and their discrete approximation as well as between the associated state and adjoint state variables and their discrete approximations
The statistical finite element method (StatFEM) is an emerging probabilistic method that allows observations of a physical system to be synthesised with the numerical solution of a PDE intended to describe it in a coherent statistical framework, to compensate for model error. This work presents a new theoretical analysis of the statistical finite element method demonstrating that it has similar convergence properties to the finite element method on which it is based. Our results constitute a bound on the Wasserstein-2 distance between the ideal prior and posterior and the StatFEM approximation thereof, and show that this distance converges at the same mesh-dependent rate as finite element solutions converge to the true solution. Several numerical examples are presented to demonstrate our theory, including an example which test the robustness of StatFEM when extended to nonlinear quantities of interest.
This paper presents the convergence analysis of the spatial finite difference method (FDM) for the stochastic Cahn--Hilliard equation with Lipschitz nonlinearity and multiplicative noise. Based on fine estimates of the discrete Green function, we prove that both the spatial semi-discrete numerical solution and its Malliavin derivative have strong convergence order $1$. Further, by showing the negative moment estimates of the exact solution, we obtain that the density of the spatial semi-discrete numerical solution converges in $L^1(\mathbb R)$ to the exact one. Finally, we apply an exponential Euler method to discretize the spatial semi-discrete numerical solution in time and show that the temporal strong convergence order is nearly $\frac38$, where a difficulty we overcome is to derive the optimal H\"older continuity of the spatial semi-discrete numerical solution.
