Autonomous flying robots, such as multirotors, often rely on deep learning models that makes predictions based on a camera image, e.g. for pose estimation. These models can predict surprising results if applied to input images outside the training domain. This fault can be exploited by adversarial attacks, for example, by computing small images, so-called adversarial patches, that can be placed in the environment to manipulate the neural network's prediction. We introduce flying adversarial patches, where multiple images are mounted on at least one other flying robot and therefore can be placed anywhere in the field of view of a victim multirotor. By introducing the attacker robots, the system is extended to an adversarial multi-robot system. For an effective attack, we compare three methods that simultaneously optimize multiple adversarial patches and their position in the input image. We show that our methods scale well with the number of adversarial patches. Moreover, we demonstrate physical flights with two robots, where we employ a novel attack policy that uses the computed adversarial patches to kidnap a robot that was supposed to follow a human.
Mobile manipulators have been employed in many applications which are usually performed by multiple fixed-base robots or a large-size system, thanks to the mobility of the mobile base. However, the mobile base also brings redundancies to the system, which makes trajectory planning more challenging. One class of problems recently arising from mobile 3D printing is the trajectory-continuous tasks, in which the end-effector is required to follow a designed continuous trajectory (time-parametrized path) in task space. This paper formulates and solves the optimal trajectory planning problem for mobile manipulators under end-effector trajectory continuity constraint, which allows considerations of other constraints and trajectory optimization. To demonstrate our method, a discrete optimal trajectory planning algorithm is proposed to solve mobile 3D printing tasks in multiple experiments.
To integrate action recognition methods into autonomous robotic systems, it is crucial to consider adverse situations involving target occlusions. Such a scenario, despite its practical relevance, is rarely addressed in existing self-supervised skeleton-based action recognition methods. To empower robots with the capacity to address occlusion, we propose a simple and effective method. We first pre-train using occluded skeleton sequences, then use k-means clustering (KMeans) on sequence embeddings to group semantically similar samples. Next, we employ K-nearest-neighbor (KNN) to fill in missing skeleton data based on the closest sample neighbors. Imputing incomplete skeleton sequences to create relatively complete sequences as input provides significant benefits to existing skeleton-based self-supervised models. Meanwhile, building on the state-of-the-art Partial Spatio-Temporal Learning (PSTL), we introduce an Occluded Partial Spatio-Temporal Learning (OPSTL) framework. This enhancement utilizes Adaptive Spatial Masking (ASM) for better use of high-quality, intact skeletons. The effectiveness of our imputation methods is verified on the challenging occluded versions of the NTURGB+D 60 and NTURGB+D 120. Event cameras, also known as neuromorphic cameras, are an emerging technology that offer advantages over traditional shutter and frame-based cameras, including high temporal resolution, low power consumption, and selective data acquisition. In this study, we propose to harnesses the capabilities of event-based cameras to capture subtle changes in the surface of the skin caused by the pulsatile flow of blood in the wrist region. We investigate whether an event camera could be used for continuous noninvasive monitoring of heart rate (HR). Event camera video data from 25 participants, comprising varying age groups and skin colours, was collected and analysed. Ground-truth HR measurements obtained using conventional methods were used to evaluate of the accuracy of automatic detection of HR from event camera data. Our experimental results and comparison to the performance of other non-contact HR measurement methods demonstrate the feasibility of using event cameras for pulse detection. We also acknowledge the challenges and limitations of our method, such as light-induced flickering and the sub-conscious but naturally-occurring tremors of an individual during data capture.
Few-shot point cloud semantic segmentation aims to train a model to quickly adapt to new unseen classes with only a handful of support set samples. However, the noise-free assumption in the support set can be easily violated in many practical real-world settings. In this paper, we focus on improving the robustness of few-shot point cloud segmentation under the detrimental influence of noisy support sets during testing time. To this end, we first propose a Component-level Clean Noise Separation (CCNS) representation learning to learn discriminative feature representations that separates the clean samples of the target classes from the noisy samples. Leveraging the well separated clean and noisy support samples from our CCNS, we further propose a Multi-scale Degree-based Noise Suppression (MDNS) scheme to remove the noisy shots from the support set. We conduct extensive experiments on various noise settings on two benchmark datasets. Our results show that the combination of CCNS and MDNS significantly improves the performance. Recent research has shown that multi-task pre-training greatly improves the model's robustness and transfer ability, which is crucial for building a high-quality dialog system. However, most previous works on multi-task pre-training rely heavily on human-defined input format or prompt, which is not optimal in quality and quantity. In this work, we propose to use Task-based Automatic Prompt generation (TAP) to automatically generate high-quality prompts. Using the high-quality prompts generated, we scale the corpus of the pre-trained conversation model to 122 datasets from 15 dialog-related tasks, resulting in Universal Pre-trained Conversation Model (UniPCM), a powerful foundation model for various conversational tasks and different dialog systems. Extensive experiments have shown that UniPCM is robust to input prompts and capable of various dialog-related tasks. Moreover, UniPCM has strong transfer ability and excels at low resource scenarios, achieving SOTA results on 9 different datasets ranging from task-oriented dialog to open-domain conversation. Furthermore, we are amazed to find that TAP can generate prompts on par with those collected with crowdsourcing. The code is released with the paper.
Learning object affordances is an effective tool in the field of robot learning. While the data-driven models delve into the exploration of affordances of single or paired objects, there is a notable gap in the investigation of affordances of compound objects that are composed of an arbitrary number of objects with complex shapes. In this study, we propose Multi-Object Graph Affordance Network (MOGAN) that models compound object affordances and predicts the effect of placing new objects on top of the existing compound. Given different tasks, such as building towers of specific heights or properties, we used a search based planning to find the sequence of stack actions with the objects of suitable affordances. We showed that our system was able to correctly model the affordances of very complex compound objects that include stacked spheres and cups, poles, and rings that enclose the poles. We demonstrated the applicability of our system in both simulated and real-world environments, comparing our systems with a baseline model to highlight its advantages.
2D irregular shape packing is a necessary step to arrange UV patches of a 3D model within a texture atlas for memory-efficient appearance rendering in computer graphics. Being a joint, combinatorial decision-making problem involving all patch positions and orientations, this problem has well-known NP-hard complexity. Prior solutions either assume a heuristic packing order or modify the upstream mesh cut and UV mapping to simplify the problem, which either limits the packing ratio or incurs robustness or generality issues. Instead, we introduce a learning-assisted 2D irregular shape packing method that achieves a high packing quality with minimal requirements from the input. Our method iteratively selects and groups subsets of UV patches into near-rectangular super patches, essentially reducing the problem to bin-packing, based on which a joint optimization is employed to further improve the packing ratio. In order to efficiently deal with large problem instances with hundreds of patches, we train deep neural policies to predict nearly rectangular patch subsets and determine their relative poses, leading to linear time scaling with the number of patches. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our method on three datasets for UV packing, where our method achieves a higher packing ratio over several widely used baselines with competitive computational speed.
With the rise of powerful pre-trained vision-language models like CLIP, it becomes essential to investigate ways to adapt these models to downstream datasets. A recently proposed method named Context Optimization (CoOp) introduces the concept of prompt learning -- a recent trend in NLP -- to the vision domain for adapting pre-trained vision-language models. Specifically, CoOp turns context words in a prompt into a set of learnable vectors and, with only a few labeled images for learning, can achieve huge improvements over intensively-tuned manual prompts. In our study we identify a critical problem of CoOp: the learned context is not generalizable to wider unseen classes within the same dataset, suggesting that CoOp overfits base classes observed during training. To address the problem, we propose Conditional Context Optimization (CoCoOp), which extends CoOp by further learning a lightweight neural network to generate for each image an input-conditional token (vector). Compared to CoOp's static prompts, our dynamic prompts adapt to each instance and are thus less sensitive to class shift. Extensive experiments show that CoCoOp generalizes much better than CoOp to unseen classes, even showing promising transferability beyond a single dataset; and yields stronger domain generalization performance as well. Most object recognition approaches predominantly focus on learning discriminative visual patterns while overlooking the holistic object structure. Though important, structure modeling usually requires significant manual annotations and therefore is labor-intensive. In this paper, we propose to "look into object" (explicitly yet intrinsically model the object structure) through incorporating self-supervisions into the traditional framework. We show the recognition backbone can be substantially enhanced for more robust representation learning, without any cost of extra annotation and inference speed. Specifically, we first propose an object-extent learning module for localizing the object according to the visual patterns shared among the instances in the same category. We then design a spatial context learning module for modeling the internal structures of the object, through predicting the relative positions within the extent. These two modules can be easily plugged into any backbone networks during training and detached at inference time. Extensive experiments show that our look-into-object approach (LIO) achieves large performance gain on a number of benchmarks, including generic object recognition (ImageNet) and fine-grained object recognition tasks (CUB, Cars, Aircraft). We also show that this learning paradigm is highly generalizable to other tasks such as object detection and segmentation (MS COCO). Project page: //github.com/JDAI-CV/LIO.
We advocate the use of implicit fields for learning generative models of shapes and introduce an implicit field decoder for shape generation, aimed at improving the visual quality of the generated shapes. An implicit field assigns a value to each point in 3D space, so that a shape can be extracted as an iso-surface. Our implicit field decoder is trained to perform this assignment by means of a binary classifier. Specifically, it takes a point coordinate, along with a feature vector encoding a shape, and outputs a value which indicates whether the point is outside the shape or not. By replacing conventional decoders by our decoder for representation learning and generative modeling of shapes, we demonstrate superior results for tasks such as shape autoencoding, generation, interpolation, and single-view 3D reconstruction, particularly in terms of visual quality.
