To ease the programmability of PIM architectures, we propose DaPPA(data-parallel processing-in-memory architecture), a framework that can, for a given application, automatically distribute input and gather output data, handle memory management, and parallelize work across the DPUs. The key idea behind DaPPA is to remove the responsibility of managing hardware resources from the programmer by providing an intuitive data-parallel pattern-based programming interface that abstracts the hardware components of the UPMEM system. Using this key idea, DaPPA transforms a data-parallel pattern-based application code into the appropriate UPMEM-target code, including the required APIs for data management and code partition, which can then be compiled into a UPMEM-based binary transparently from the programmer. While generating UPMEM-target code, DaPPA implements several code optimizations to improve end-to-end performance.

We present MaxMem, a tiered main memory management system that aims to maximize Big Data application colocation and performance. MaxMem uses an application-agnostic and lightweight memory occupancy control mechanism based on fast memory miss ratios to provide application QoS under increasing colocation. By relying on memory access sampling and binning to quickly identify per-process memory heat gradients, MaxMem maximizes performance for many applications sharing tiered main memory simultaneously. MaxMem is designed as a user-space memory manager to be easily modifiable and extensible, without complex kernel code development. On a system with tiered main memory consisting of DRAM and Intel Optane persistent memory modules, our evaluation confirms that MaxMem provides 11% and 38% better throughput and up to 80% and an order of magnitude lower 99th percentile latency than HeMem and Linux AutoNUMA, respectively, with a Big Data key-value store in dynamic colocation scenarios.

The advent of large language models, enabling flexibility through instruction-driven approaches, has revolutionized many traditional generative tasks, but large models for 3D data, particularly in comprehensively handling 3D shapes with other modalities, are still under-explored. By achieving instruction-based shape generations, versatile multimodal generative shape models can significantly benefit various fields like 3D virtual construction and network-aided design. In this work, we present ShapeGPT, a shape-included multi-modal framework to leverage strong pre-trained language models to address multiple shape-relevant tasks. Specifically, ShapeGPT employs a word-sentence-paragraph framework to discretize continuous shapes into shape words, further assembles these words for shape sentences, as well as integrates shape with instructional text for multi-modal paragraphs. To learn this shape-language model, we use a three-stage training scheme, including shape representation, multimodal alignment, and instruction-based generation, to align shape-language codebooks and learn the intricate correlations among these modalities. Extensive experiments demonstrate that ShapeGPT achieves comparable performance across shape-relevant tasks, including text-to-shape, shape-to-text, shape completion, and shape editing.

We present a novel, power- & hardware-efficient, multiuser, multibeam RIS (Reflective Intelligent Surface) architecture for multiuser MIMO, especially for very high frequency bands (e.g., high mmWave and sub-THz), where channels are typically sparse in the beamspace and LOS is the dominant component. The key module is formed by an active multiantenna feeder (AMAF) with a small number of active antennas, placed in the near field of a RIS with a much larger number of passive controllable reflecting elements. We propose a pragmatic approach to obtain a steerable beam with high gain and very low sidelobes. Then K independently controlled beams can be achieved by closely stacking K such AMAF-RIS modules. Our analysis includes the mutual interference between the modules and the fact that, due to the delay difference of propagation through the AMAF-RIS structure, the resulting channel matrix is frequency selective even in for pure LOS propagation. We consider a 3D geometry and show that ``beam focusing'' is in fact possible (and much more effective in terms of coverage) also in the far-field, by creating spotbeams with limited footprint both in angle and in range. Our results show that: 1) simple RF beamforming (BF) without computationally expensive baseband multiuser precoding is sufficient to practically eliminate multiuser interference when the users are chosen with sufficient angular/range separation, thanks to the extremely low sidelobe beams; 2) the impact of beam pointing errors with standard deviation as large as 2.5 deg and RIS quantized phase-shifters with quantization bits > 2 is essentially negligible; 3) The proposed architecture is more power efficient & much simpler from a hardware implementation viewpoint than standard active arrays with the same BF performance. We show also that the array gain of the proposed AMAF-RIS structure is linear with the RIS aperture.

Surface reconstruction with preservation of geometric features is a challenging computer vision task. Despite significant progress in implicit shape reconstruction, state-of-the-art mesh extraction methods often produce aliased, perceptually distorted surfaces and lack scalability to high-resolution 3D shapes. We present a data-driven approach for automatic feature detection and remeshing that requires only a coarse, aliased mesh as input and scales to arbitrary resolution reconstructions. We define and learn a collection of surface-based fields to (1) capture sharp geometric features in the shape with an implicit vertexwise model and (2) approximate improvements in normals alignment obtained by applying edge-flips with an edgewise model. To support scaling to arbitrary complexity shapes, we learn our fields using local triangulated patches, fusing estimates on complete surface meshes. Our feature remeshing algorithm integrates the learned fields as sharp feature priors and optimizes vertex placement and mesh connectivity for maximum expected surface improvement. On a challenging collection of high-resolution shape reconstructions in the ABC dataset, our algorithm improves over state-of-the-art by 26% normals F-score and 42% perceptual $\text{RMSE}_{\text{v}}$.

We present ReLU-QP, a GPU-accelerated solver for quadratic programs (QPs) that is capable of solving high-dimensional control problems at real-time rates. ReLU-QP is derived by exactly reformulating the Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM) algorithm for solving QPs as a deep, weight-tied neural network with rectified linear unit (ReLU) activations. This reformulation enables the deployment of ReLU-QP on GPUs using standard machine-learning toolboxes. We evaluate the performance of ReLU-QP across three model-predictive control (MPC) benchmarks: stabilizing random linear dynamical systems with control limits, balancing an Atlas humanoid robot on a single foot, and tracking whole-body reference trajectories on a quadruped equipped with a six-degree-of-freedom arm. These benchmarks indicate that ReLU-QP is competitive with state-of-the-art CPU-based solvers for small-to-medium-scale problems and offers order-of-magnitude speed improvements for larger-scale problems.

As image generation technology advances, AI-based image generation has been applied in various fields and Artificial Intelligence Generated Content (AIGC) has garnered widespread attention. However, the development of AI-based image generative models also brings new problems and challenges. A significant challenge is that AI-generated images (AIGI) may exhibit unique distortions compared to natural images, and not all generated images meet the requirements of the real world. Therefore, it is of great significance to evaluate AIGIs more comprehensively. Although previous work has established several human perception-based AIGC image quality assessment (AIGCIQA) databases for text-generated images, the AI image generation technology includes scenarios like text-to-image and image-to-image, and assessing only the images generated by text-to-image models is insufficient. To address this issue, we establish a human perception-based image-to-image AIGCIQA database, named PKU-I2IQA. We conduct a well-organized subjective experiment to collect quality labels for AIGIs and then conduct a comprehensive analysis of the PKU-I2IQA database. Furthermore, we have proposed two benchmark models: NR-AIGCIQA based on the no-reference image quality assessment method and FR-AIGCIQA based on the full-reference image quality assessment method. Finally, leveraging this database, we conduct benchmark experiments and compare the performance of the proposed benchmark models. The PKU-I2IQA database and benchmarks will be released to facilitate future research on \url{//github.com/jiquan123/I2IQA}.

We introduce VISUAL EMBEDDED INSTRUCTION (VIM), a new framework designed to evaluate the visual instruction following capability of Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs). As illustrated in Figure 2, VIM challenges the MLLMs by embedding the instructions into the visual scenes, demanding strong visual interpretative skills for instruction following. We adapt VIM to various benchmarks, including VQAv2, MME, MM-Vet, and RefCOCO series, compose a VIM bench, and probe diverse MLLMs across three distinct in-context learning settings: Zero Shot, One Shot, and Pair Shot. We observe that there is a significant performance disparity between the open-source MLLMs and GPT-4V, implying that their proficiency in visual instruction comprehension is not up to par. Our results highlight a promising direction for the enhancement of MLLMs capabilities on instruction following. We aim VIM to serve as a useful norm for advancing the state of the art and driving further progress in the field.

As a primary means of information acquisition, information retrieval (IR) systems, such as search engines, have integrated themselves into our daily lives. These systems also serve as components of dialogue, question-answering, and recommender systems. The trajectory of IR has evolved dynamically from its origins in term-based methods to its integration with advanced neural models. While the neural models excel at capturing complex contextual signals and semantic nuances, thereby reshaping the IR landscape, they still face challenges such as data scarcity, interpretability, and the generation of contextually plausible yet potentially inaccurate responses. This evolution requires a combination of both traditional methods (such as term-based sparse retrieval methods with rapid response) and modern neural architectures (such as language models with powerful language understanding capacity). Meanwhile, the emergence of large language models (LLMs), typified by ChatGPT and GPT-4, has revolutionized natural language processing due to their remarkable language understanding, generation, generalization, and reasoning abilities. Consequently, recent research has sought to leverage LLMs to improve IR systems. Given the rapid evolution of this research trajectory, it is necessary to consolidate existing methodologies and provide nuanced insights through a comprehensive overview. In this survey, we delve into the confluence of LLMs and IR systems, including crucial aspects such as query rewriters, retrievers, rerankers, and readers. Additionally, we explore promising directions within this expanding field.

With the capability of modeling bidirectional contexts, denoising autoencoding based pretraining like BERT achieves better performance than pretraining approaches based on autoregressive language modeling. However, relying on corrupting the input with masks, BERT neglects dependency between the masked positions and suffers from a pretrain-finetune discrepancy. In light of these pros and cons, we propose XLNet, a generalized autoregressive pretraining method that (1) enables learning bidirectional contexts by maximizing the expected likelihood over all permutations of the factorization order and (2) overcomes the limitations of BERT thanks to its autoregressive formulation. Furthermore, XLNet integrates ideas from Transformer-XL, the state-of-the-art autoregressive model, into pretraining. Empirically, XLNet outperforms BERT on 20 tasks, often by a large margin, and achieves state-of-the-art results on 18 tasks including question answering, natural language inference, sentiment analysis, and document ranking.

The cross-domain recommendation technique is an effective way of alleviating the data sparsity in recommender systems by leveraging the knowledge from relevant domains. Transfer learning is a class of algorithms underlying these techniques. In this paper, we propose a novel transfer learning approach for cross-domain recommendation by using neural networks as the base model. We assume that hidden layers in two base networks are connected by cross mappings, leading to the collaborative cross networks (CoNet). CoNet enables dual knowledge transfer across domains by introducing cross connections from one base network to another and vice versa. CoNet is achieved in multi-layer feedforward networks by adding dual connections and joint loss functions, which can be trained efficiently by back-propagation. The proposed model is evaluated on two real-world datasets and it outperforms baseline models by relative improvements of 3.56\% in MRR and 8.94\% in NDCG, respectively.
