Carotid arteries vulnerable plaques are a crucial factor in the screening of atherosclerosis by ultrasound technique. However, the plaques are contaminated by various noises such as artifact, speckle noise, and manual segmentation may be time-consuming. This paper proposes an automatic convolutional neural network (CNN) method for plaque segmentation in carotid ultrasound images using a small dataset. First, a parallel network with three independent scale decoders is utilized as our base segmentation network, pyramid dilation convolutions are used to enlarge receptive fields in the three segmentation sub-networks. Subsequently, the three decoders are merged to be rectified in channels by SENet. Thirdly, in test stage, the initially segmented plaque is refined by the max contour morphology post-processing to obtain the final plaque. Moreover, three loss function Dice loss, SSIM loss and cross-entropy loss are compared to segment plaques. Test results show that the proposed method with dice loss function yields a Dice value of 0.820, an IoU of 0.701, Acc of 0.969, and modified Hausdorff distance (MHD) of 1.43 for 30 vulnerable cases of plaques, it outperforms some of the conventional CNN-based methods on these metrics. Additionally, we apply an ablation experiment to show the validity of each proposed module. Our study provides some reference for similar researches and may be useful in actual applications for plaque segmentation of ultrasound carotid arteries.

Pedestrian dead reckoning is a challenging task due to the low-cost inertial sensor error accumulation. Recent research has shown that deep learning methods can achieve impressive performance in handling this issue. In this letter, we propose inertial odometry using a deep learning-based velocity estimation method. The deep neural network based on Res2Net modules and two convolutional block attention modules is leveraged to restore the potential connection between the horizontal velocity vector and raw inertial data from a smartphone. Our network is trained using only fifty percent of the public inertial odometry dataset (RoNIN) data. Then, it is validated on the RoNIN testing dataset and another public inertial odometry dataset (OXIOD). Compared with the traditional step-length and heading system-based algorithm, our approach decreases the absolute translation error (ATE) by 76%-86%. In addition, compared with the state-of-the-art deep learning method (RoNIN), our method improves its ATE by 6%-31.4%.

Background: The assessment of left ventricular (LV) function by myocardial perfusion SPECT (MPS) relies on accurate myocardial segmentation. The purpose of this paper is to develop and validate a new method incorporating deep learning with shape priors to accurately extract the LV myocardium for automatic measurement of LV functional parameters. Methods: A segmentation architecture that integrates a three-dimensional (3D) V-Net with a shape deformation module was developed. Using the shape priors generated by a dynamic programming (DP) algorithm, the model output was then constrained and guided during the model training for quick convergence and improved performance. A stratified 5-fold cross-validation was used to train and validate our models. Results: Results of our proposed method agree well with those from the ground truth. Our proposed model achieved a Dice similarity coefficient (DSC) of 0.9573(0.0244), 0.9821(0.0137), and 0.9903(0.0041), a Hausdorff distances (HD) of 6.7529(2.7334) mm, 7.2507(3.1952) mm, and 7.6121(3.0134) mm in extracting the endocardium, myocardium, and epicardium, respectively. Conclusion: Our proposed method achieved a high accuracy in extracting LV myocardial contours and assessing LV function.

This paper presents a new framework for human body part segmentation based on Deep Convolutional Neural Networks trained using only synthetic data. The proposed approach achieves cutting-edge results without the need of training the models with real annotated data of human body parts. Our contributions include a data generation pipeline, that exploits a game engine for the creation of the synthetic data used for training the network, and a novel pre-processing module, that combines edge response maps and adaptive histogram equalization to guide the network to learn the shape of the human body parts ensuring robustness to changes in the illumination conditions. For selecting the best candidate architecture, we perform exhaustive tests on manually annotated images of real human body limbs. We further compare our method against several high-end commercial segmentation tools on the body parts segmentation task. The results show that our method outperforms the other models by a significant margin. Finally, we present an ablation study to validate our pre-processing module. With this paper, we release an implementation of the proposed approach along with the acquired datasets.

Physics-Informed Neural Networks (PINN) are neural networks (NNs) that encode model equations, like Partial Differential Equations (PDE), as a component of the neural network itself. PINNs are nowadays used to solve PDEs, fractional equations, integral-differential equations, and stochastic PDEs. This novel methodology has arisen as a multi-task learning framework in which a NN must fit observed data while reducing a PDE residual. This article provides a comprehensive review of the literature on PINNs: while the primary goal of the study was to characterize these networks and their related advantages and disadvantages. The review also attempts to incorporate publications on a broader range of collocation-based physics informed neural networks, which stars form the vanilla PINN, as well as many other variants, such as physics-constrained neural networks (PCNN), variational hp-VPINN, and conservative PINN (CPINN). The study indicates that most research has focused on customizing the PINN through different activation functions, gradient optimization techniques, neural network structures, and loss function structures. Despite the wide range of applications for which PINNs have been used, by demonstrating their ability to be more feasible in some contexts than classical numerical techniques like Finite Element Method (FEM), advancements are still possible, most notably theoretical issues that remain unresolved.

It has previously been observed that the filters learned in the first layer of a CNN are qualitatively similar for different networks and tasks. We extend this finding and show a high quantitative similarity between filters learned by different networks. We consider the CNN filters as a filter bank and measure the sensitivity of the filter bank to different frequencies. We show that the sensitivity profile of different networks is almost identical, yet far from initialization. Remarkably, we show that it remains the same even when the network is trained with random labels. To understand this effect, we derive an analytic formula for the sensitivity of the filters in the first layer of a linear CNN. We prove that when the average patch in images of the two classes is identical, the sensitivity profile of the filters in the first layer will be identical in expectation when using the true labels or random labels and will only depend on the second-order statistics of image patches. We empirically demonstrate that the average patch assumption holds for realistic datasets. Finally we show that the energy profile of filters in nonlinear CNNs is highly correlated with the energy profile of linear CNNs and that our analysis of linear networks allows us to predict when representations learned by state-of-the-art networks trained on benchmark classification tasks will depend on the labels.

A novel network for enhancement to underwater images is proposed in this paper. It contains a Reinforcement Fusion Module for Haar wavelet images (RFM-Haar) based on Reinforcement Fusion Unit (RFU), which is used to fuse an original image and some important information within it. Fusion is achieved for better enhancement. As this network make "Haar Images into Fusion Images", it is called HIFI-Net. The experimental results show the proposed HIFI-Net performs best among many state-of-the-art methods on three datasets at three normal metrics and a new metric.

We seek to provide an interpretable framework for segmenting users in a population for personalized decision-making. We propose a general methodology, Market Segmentation Trees (MSTs), for learning market segmentations explicitly driven by identifying differences in user response patterns. To demonstrate the versatility of our methodology, we design two new, specialized MST algorithms: (i) Choice Model Trees (CMTs), which can be used to predict a user's choice amongst multiple options and (ii) Isotonic Regression Trees (IRTs), which can be used to solve the bid landscape forecasting problem. We provide a theoretical analysis of the asymptotic running times of our algorithmic methods, which validates their computational tractability on large datasets. We also provide a customizable, open-source code base for training MSTs in Python which employs several strategies for scalability, including parallel processing and warm starts. Finally, we assess the practical performance of MSTs on several synthetic and real world datasets, showing that our method reliably finds market segmentations which accurately model response behavior. Moreover, MSTs are interpretable since the market segments can easily be described by a decision tree and often require only a fraction of the number of market segments generated by traditional approaches.

Neural networks have shown tremendous growth in recent years to solve numerous problems. Various types of neural networks have been introduced to deal with different types of problems. However, the main goal of any neural network is to transform the non-linearly separable input data into more linearly separable abstract features using a hierarchy of layers. These layers are combinations of linear and nonlinear functions. The most popular and common non-linearity layers are activation functions (AFs), such as Logistic Sigmoid, Tanh, ReLU, ELU, Swish and Mish. In this paper, a comprehensive overview and survey is presented for AFs in neural networks for deep learning. Different classes of AFs such as Logistic Sigmoid and Tanh based, ReLU based, ELU based, and Learning based are covered. Several characteristics of AFs such as output range, monotonicity, and smoothness are also pointed out. A performance comparison is also performed among 18 state-of-the-art AFs with different networks on different types of data. The insights of AFs are presented to benefit the researchers for doing further research and practitioners to select among different choices. We propose a novel attention gate (AG) model for medical imaging that automatically learns to focus on target structures of varying shapes and sizes. Models trained with AGs implicitly learn to suppress irrelevant regions in an input image while highlighting salient features useful for a specific task. This enables us to eliminate the necessity of using explicit external tissue/organ localisation modules of cascaded convolutional neural networks (CNNs). AGs can be easily integrated into standard CNN architectures such as the U-Net model with minimal computational overhead while increasing the model sensitivity and prediction accuracy. The proposed Attention U-Net architecture is evaluated on two large CT abdominal datasets for multi-class image segmentation. Experimental results show that AGs consistently improve the prediction performance of U-Net across different datasets and training sizes while preserving computational efficiency. The code for the proposed architecture is publicly available.

Recent advance in fluorescence microscopy enables acquisition of 3D image volumes with better quality and deeper penetration into tissue. Segmentation is a required step to characterize and analyze biological structures in the images. 3D segmentation using deep learning has achieved promising results in microscopy images. One issue is that deep learning techniques require a large set of groundtruth data which is impractical to annotate manually for microscopy volumes. This paper describes a 3D nuclei segmentation method using 3D convolutional neural networks. A set of synthetic volumes and the corresponding groundtruth volumes are generated automatically using a generative adversarial network. Segmentation results demonstrate that our proposed method is capable of segmenting nuclei successfully in 3D for various data sets.
