Many problems in fluid dynamics are effectively modeled as Stokes flows - slow, viscous flows where the Reynolds number is small. Boundary integral equations are often used to solve these problems, where the fundamental solutions for the fluid velocity are the Stokeslet and stresslet. One of the main challenges in evaluating the boundary integrals is that the kernels become singular on the surface. A regularization method that eliminates the singularities and reduces the numerical error through correction terms for both the Stokeslet and stresslet integrals was developed in Tlupova and Beale, JCP (2019). In this work we build on the previously developed method to introduce a new stresslet regularization that is simpler and results in higher accuracy when evaluated on the surface. Our regularization replaces a seventh-degree polynomial that results from an equation with two conditions and two unknowns with a fifth-degree polynomial that results from an equation with one condition and one unknown. Numerical experiments demonstrate that the new regularization retains the same order of convergence as the regularization developed by Tlupova and Beale but shows a decreased magnitude of the error.
In this paper, we develop a new change detection algorithm for detecting a change in the Markov kernel over a metric space in which the post-change kernel is unknown. Under the assumption that the pre- and post-change Markov kernel is geometrically ergodic, we derive an upper bound on the mean delay and a lower bound on the mean time between false alarms.
In this paper, we are interested in the performance of a variable-length stop-feedback (VLSF) code with $m$ optimal decoding times for the binary-input additive white Gaussian noise (BI-AWGN) channel. We first develop tight approximations on the tail probability of length-$n$ cumulative information density. Building on the work of Yavas \emph{et al.}, we formulate the problem of minimizing the upper bound on average blocklength subject to the error probability, minimum gap, and integer constraints. For this integer program, we show that for a given error constraint, a VLSF code that decodes after every symbol attains the maximum achievable rate. We also present a greedy algorithm that yields possibly suboptimal integer decoding times. By allowing a positive real-valued decoding time, we develop the gap-constrained sequential differential optimization (SDO) procedure. Numerical evaluation shows that the gap-constrained SDO can provide a good estimate on achievable rate of VLSF codes with $m$ optimal decoding times and that a finite $m$ suffices to attain Polyanskiy's bound for VLSF codes with $m = \infty$.
In recent work (Maierhofer & Huybrechs, 2022, Adv. Comput. Math.), the authors showed that least-squares oversampling can improve the convergence properties of collocation methods for boundary integral equations involving operators of certain pseudo-differential form. The underlying principle is that the discrete method approximates a Bubnov$-$Galerkin method in a suitable sense. In the present work, we extend this analysis to the case when the integral operator is perturbed by a compact operator $\mathcal{K}$ which is continuous as a map on Sobolev spaces on the boundary, $\mathcal{K}:H^{p}\rightarrow H^{q}$ for all $p,q\in\mathbb{R}$. This study is complicated by the fact that both the test and trial functions in the discrete Bubnov-Galerkin orthogonality conditions are modified over the unperturbed setting. Our analysis guarantees that previous results concerning optimal convergence rates and sufficient rates of oversampling are preserved in the more general case. Indeed, for the first time, this analysis provides a complete explanation of the advantages of least-squares oversampled collocation for boundary integral formulations of the Laplace equation on arbitrary smooth Jordan curves in 2D. Our theoretical results are shown to be in very good agreement with numerical experiments.
This paper addresses the problem of determining all optimal integer solutions of a linear integer network flow problem, which we call the all optimal integer flow (AOF) problem. We derive an O(F (m + n) + mn + M ) time algorithm to determine all F many optimal integer flows in a directed network with n nodes and m arcs, where M is the best time needed to find one minimum cost flow. We remark that stopping Hamacher's well-known method for the determination of the K best integer flows at the first sub-optimal flow results in an algorithm with a running time of O(F m(n log n + m) + M ) for solving the AOF problem. Our improvement is essentially made possible by replacing the shortest path sub-problem with a more efficient way to determine a so called proper zero cost cycle using a modified depth-first search technique. As a byproduct, our analysis yields an enhanced algorithm to determine the K best integer flows that runs in O(Kn3 + M ). Besides, we give lower and upper bounds for the number of all optimal integer and feasible integer solutions. Our bounds are based on the fact that any optimal solution can be obtained by an initial optimal tree solution plus a conical combination of incidence vectors of all induced cycles with bounded coefficients.
This work investigates the use of neural networks admitting high-order derivatives for modeling dynamic variations of smooth implicit surfaces. For this purpose, it extends the representation of differentiable neural implicit surfaces to higher dimensions, which opens up mechanisms that allow to exploit geometric transformations in many settings, from animation and surface evolution to shape morphing and design galleries. The problem is modeled by a $k$-parameter family of surfaces $S_c$, specified as a neural network function $f : \mathbb{R}^3 \times \mathbb{R}^k \rightarrow \mathbb{R}$, where $S_c$ is the zero-level set of the implicit function $f(\cdot, c) : \mathbb{R}^3 \rightarrow \mathbb{R} $, with $c \in \mathbb{R}^k$, with variations induced by the control variable $c$. In that context, restricted to each coordinate of $\mathbb{R}^k$, the underlying representation is a neural homotopy which is the solution of a general partial differential equation.
In this paper, a well-posed simultaneous space-time First Order System Least Squares formulation is constructed of the instationary incompressible Stokes equations with slip boundary conditions. As a consequence of this well-posedness, the minimization over any conforming triple of finite element spaces for velocities, pressure and stress tensor gives a quasi-best approximation from that triple. The formulation is practical in the sense that all norms in the least squares functional can be efficiently evaluated. Being of least squares type, the formulation comes with an efficient and reliable a posteriori error estimator. In addition, a priori error estimates are derived, and numerical results are presented.
This paper considers identification and estimation of the causal effect of the time Z until a subject is treated on a survival outcome T. The treatment is not randomly assigned, T is randomly right censored by a random variable C and the time to treatment Z is right censored by min(T,C) The endogeneity issue is treated using an instrumental variable explaining Z and independent of the error term of the model. We study identification in a fully nonparametric framework. We show that our specification generates an integral equation, of which the regression function of interest is a solution. We provide identification conditions that rely on this identification equation. For estimation purposes, we assume that the regression function follows a parametric model. We propose an estimation procedure and give conditions under which the estimator is asymptotically normal. The estimators exhibit good finite sample properties in simulations. Our methodology is applied to find evidence supporting the efficacy of a therapy for burn-out.
In this paper, we study the problem of relaying a single bit of information across a series of binary symmetric channels, and the associated trade-off between the number of hops $m$, the transmission time $n$, and the error probability. We introduce a simple, efficient, and deterministic protocol that attains positive information velocity (i.e., a non-vanishing ratio $\frac{m}{n}$ and small error probability) and is significantly simpler than existing protocols that do so. In addition, we characterize the optimal low-noise and high-noise scaling laws of the information velocity, and we adapt our 1-bit protocol to transmit $k$ bits over $m$ hops with $O(m+k)$ transmission time.
We study the implicit upwind finite volume scheme for numerically approximating the advection-diffusion equation with a vector field in the low regularity DiPerna-Lions setting. That is, we are concerned with advecting velocity fields that are spatially Sobolev regular and data that are merely integrable. We study the implicit upwind finite volume scheme for numerically approximating the advection-diffusion equation with a vector field in the low regularity DiPerna-Lions setting. We prove that on unstructured regular meshes the rate of convergence of approximate solutions generated by the upwind scheme towards the unique solution of the continuous model is at least one. The numerical error is estimated in terms of logarithmic Kantorovich-Rubinstein distances and provides thus a bound on the rate of weak convergence.
Although the theory of constrained least squares (CLS) estimation is well known, it is usually applied with the view that the constraints to be imposed are unavoidable. However, there are cases in which constraints are optional. For example, in camera color calibration, one of several possible color processing systems is obtained if a constraint on the row sums of a desired color correction matrix is imposed; in this example, it is not clear a priori whether imposing the constraint leads to better system performance. In this paper, we derive an exact expression connecting the constraint to the increase in fitting error obtained from imposing it. As another contribution, we show how to determine projection matrices that separate the measured data into two components: the first component drives up the fitting error due to imposing a constraint, and the second component is unaffected by the constraint. We demonstrate the use of these results in the color calibration problem.
