Learning graph generative models over latent spaces has received less attention compared to models that operate on the original data space and has so far demonstrated lacklustre performance. We present GLAD a latent space graph generative model. Unlike most previous latent space graph generative models, GLAD operates on a discrete latent space that preserves to a significant extent the discrete nature of the graph structures making no unnatural assumptions such as latent space continuity. We learn the prior of our discrete latent space by adapting diffusion bridges to its structure. By operating over an appropriately constructed latent space we avoid relying on decompositions that are often used in models that operate in the original data space. We present experiments on a series of graph benchmark datasets which clearly show the superiority of the discrete latent space and obtain state of the art graph generative performance, making GLAD the first latent space graph generative model with competitive performance. The objective of single image dehazing is to restore hazy images and produce clear, high-quality visuals. Traditional convolutional models struggle with long-range dependencies due to their limited receptive field size. While Transformers excel at capturing such dependencies, their quadratic computational complexity in relation to feature map resolution makes them less suitable for pixel-to-pixel dense prediction tasks. Moreover, fixed kernels or tokens in most models do not adapt well to varying blur sizes, resulting in suboptimal dehazing performance. In this study, we introduce a novel dehazing network based on Parallel Stripe Cross Attention (PCSA) with a multi-scale strategy. PCSA efficiently integrates long-range dependencies by simultaneously capturing horizontal and vertical relationships, allowing each pixel to capture contextual cues from an expanded spatial domain. To handle different sizes and shapes of blurs flexibly, We employs a channel-wise design with varying convolutional kernel sizes and strip lengths in each PCSA to capture context information at different scales.Additionally, we incorporate a softmax-based adaptive weighting mechanism within PCSA to prioritize and leverage more critical features.

Many practically relevant robot grasping problems feature a target object for which all grasps are occluded, e.g., by the environment. Single-shot grasp planning invariably fails in such scenarios. Instead, it is necessary to first manipulate the object into a configuration that affords a grasp. We solve this problem by learning a sequence of actions that utilize the environment to change the object's pose. Concretely, we employ hierarchical reinforcement learning to combine a sequence of learned parameterized manipulation primitives. By learning the low-level manipulation policies, our approach can control the object's state through exploiting interactions between the object, the gripper, and the environment. Designing such a complex behavior analytically would be infeasible under uncontrolled conditions, as an analytic approach requires accurate physical modeling of the interaction and contact dynamics. In contrast, we learn a hierarchical policy model that operates directly on depth perception data, without the need for object detection, pose estimation, or manual design of controllers. We evaluate our approach on picking box-shaped objects of various weight, shape, and friction properties from a constrained table-top workspace. Our method transfers to a real robot and is able to successfully complete the object picking task in 98\% of experimental trials. An innovative design method of conformal array antennas is presented by utilizing characteristic mode analysis (CMA) in this work. A single-layer continuous perfect electric conductor under bending conditions is conducted by CMA to evaluate the variations in operating performance. By using this method, the design process of a conformal array is simplified. The results indicate that the operating performance of the antenna with single-layer metal radiation structure remains stable within a certain range of curvature. Subsequently, an infinite array element using single-layer metal radiation structure is designed, operating in ultra-wideband and dual polarization. Following, an 8 * 8 ultra-wideband dual-polarized cylindrical-conformal array (UDCA) is developed by wrapping the planar arrays to a cylindric surface, which has a stable operating performance even at a curvature radius as small as 100 mm. Finally, a physical prototype is cost-effectively fabricated by novel manufacturing solutions that stack three-layer conformal substrate. The experimental result demonstrates that the proposed UDCA with a 1.2{\lambda} curvature radius operates at 3.6~9.6 GHz (90.9%) and achieves 60{\deg} wide-angle scanning in two principal planes, which provides a practical and promising solution for conformal array applications. The insights derived from the CMA offer a direction for further advancement in conformal antenna research.

We propose the characteristic generator, a novel one-step generative model that combines the efficiency of sampling in Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) with the stable performance of flow-based models. Our model is driven by characteristics, along which the probability density transport can be described by ordinary differential equations (ODEs). Specifically, We estimate the velocity field through nonparametric regression and utilize Euler method to solve the probability flow ODE, generating a series of discrete approximations to the characteristics. We then use a deep neural network to fit these characteristics, ensuring a one-step mapping that effectively pushes the prior distribution towards the target distribution. In the theoretical aspect, we analyze the errors in velocity matching, Euler discretization, and characteristic fitting to establish a non-asymptotic convergence rate for the characteristic generator in 2-Wasserstein distance. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first thorough analysis for simulation-free one step generative models. Additionally, our analysis refines the error analysis of flow-based generative models in prior works. We apply our method on both synthetic and real datasets, and the results demonstrate that the characteristic generator achieves high generation quality with just a single evaluation of neural network.

Making AI safe and dependable requires the generation of dependable models and dependable execution of those models. We propose redundant execution as a well-known technique that can be used to ensure reliable execution of the AI model. This generic technique will extend the application scope of AI-accelerators that do not feature well-documented safety or dependability properties. Typical redundancy techniques incur at least double or triple the computational expense of the original. We adopt a co-design approach, integrating reliable model execution with non-reliable execution, focusing that additional computational expense only where it is strictly necessary. We describe the design, implementation and some preliminary results of a hybrid CNN.

Facial feature tracking is essential in imaging ballistocardiography for accurate heart rate estimation and enables motor degradation quantification in Parkinson's disease through skin feature tracking. While deep convolutional neural networks have shown remarkable accuracy in tracking tasks, they typically require extensive labeled data for supervised training. Our proposed pipeline employs a convolutional stacked autoencoder to match image crops with a reference crop containing the target feature, learning deep feature encodings specific to the object category in an unsupervised manner, thus reducing data requirements. To overcome edge effects making the performance dependent on crop size, we introduced a Gaussian weight on the residual errors of the pixels when calculating the loss function. Training the autoencoder on facial images and validating its performance on manually labeled face and hand videos, our Deep Feature Encodings (DFE) method demonstrated superior tracking accuracy with a mean error ranging from 0.6 to 3.3 pixels, outperforming traditional methods like SIFT, SURF, Lucas Kanade, and the latest transformers like PIPs++ and CoTracker. Overall, our unsupervised learning approach excels in tracking various skin features under significant motion conditions, providing superior feature descriptors for tracking, matching, and image registration compared to both traditional and state-of-the-art supervised learning methods.

Differentiable particle filters are an emerging class of models that combine sequential Monte Carlo techniques with the flexibility of neural networks to perform state space inference. This paper concerns the case where the system may switch between a finite set of state-space models, i.e. regimes. No prior approaches effectively learn both the individual regimes and the switching process simultaneously. In this paper, we propose the neural network based regime learning differentiable particle filter (RLPF) to address this problem. We further design a training procedure for the RLPF and other related algorithms. We demonstrate competitive performance compared to the previous state-of-the-art algorithms on a pair of numerical experiments.

Interventions targeting the representation space of language models (LMs) have emerged as an effective means to influence model behavior. Such methods are employed, for example, to eliminate or alter the encoding of demographic information such as gender within the model's representations and, in so doing, create a counterfactual representation. However, because the intervention operates within the representation space, understanding precisely what aspects of the text it modifies poses a challenge. In this paper, we give a method to convert representation counterfactuals into string counterfactuals. We demonstrate that this approach enables us to analyze the linguistic alterations corresponding to a given representation space intervention and to interpret the features utilized to encode a specific concept. Moreover, the resulting counterfactuals can be used to mitigate bias in classification through data augmentation.

Decentralized learning (DL) leverages edge devices for collaborative model training while avoiding coordination by a central server. Due to privacy concerns, DL has become an attractive alternative to centralized learning schemes since training data never leaves the device. In a round of DL, all nodes participate in model training and exchange their model with some other nodes. Performing DL in large-scale heterogeneous networks results in high communication costs and prolonged round durations due to slow nodes, effectively inflating the total training time. Furthermore, current DL algorithms also assume all nodes are available for training and aggregation at all times, diminishing the practicality of DL. This paper presents Plexus, an efficient, scalable, and practical DL system. Plexus (1) avoids network-wide participation by introducing a decentralized peer sampler that selects small subsets of available nodes that train the model each round and, (2) aggregates the trained models produced by nodes every round. Plexus is designed to handle joining and leaving nodes (churn). We extensively evaluate Plexus by incorporating realistic traces for compute speed, pairwise latency, network capacity, and availability of edge devices in our experiments. Our experiments on four common learning tasks empirically show that Plexus reduces time-to-accuracy by 1.2-8.3x, communication volume by 2.4-15.3x and training resources needed for convergence by 6.4-370x compared to baseline DL algorithms.

Hawkes Process has been used to model Limit Order Book (LOB) dynamics in several ways in the literature however the focus has been limited to capturing the inter-event times while the order size is usually assumed to be constant. We propose a novel methodology of using Compound Hawkes Process for the LOB where each event has an order size sampled from a calibrated distribution. The process is formulated in a novel way such that the spread of the process always remains positive. Further, we condition the model parameters on time of day to support empirical observations. We make use of an enhanced non-parametric method to calibrate the Hawkes kernels and allow for inhibitory cross-excitation kernels. We showcase the results and quality of fits for an equity stock's LOB in the NASDAQ exchange and compare them against several baselines. Finally, we conduct a market impact study of the simulator and show the empirical observation of a concave market impact function is indeed replicated.
