In this paper we present a finite element analysis for a Dirichlet boundary control problem governed by the Stokes equation. The Dirichlet control is considered in a convex closed subset of the energy space $\mathbf{H}^1(\Omega).$ Most of the previous works on the Stokes Dirichlet boundary control problem deals with either tangential control or the case where the flux of the control is zero. This choice of the control is very particular and their choice of the formulation leads to the control with limited regularity. To overcome this difficulty, we introduce the Stokes problem with outflow condition and the control acts on the Dirichlet boundary only hence our control is more general and it has both the tangential and normal components. We prove well-posedness and discuss on the regularity of the control problem. The first-order optimality condition for the control leads to a Signorini problem. We develop a two-level finite element discretization by using $\mathbf{P}_1$ elements(on the fine mesh) for the velocity and the control variable and $P_0$ elements (on the coarse mesh) for the pressure variable. The standard energy error analysis gives $\frac{1}{2}+\frac{\delta}{2}$ order of convergence when the control is in $\mathbf{H}^{\frac{3}{2}+\delta}(\Omega)$ space. Here we have improved it to $\frac{1}{2}+\delta,$ which is optimal. Also, when the control lies in less regular space we derived optimal order of convergence up to the regularity. The theoretical results are corroborated by a variety of numerical tests.
We investigate multiple testing and variable selection using the Least Angle Regression (LARS) algorithm in high dimensions under the assumption of Gaussian noise. LARS is known to produce a piecewise affine solution path with change points referred to as the knots of the LARS path. The key to our results is an expression in closed form of the exact joint law of a $K$-tuple of knots conditional on the variables selected by LARS, namely the so-called post-selection joint law of the LARS knots. Numerical experiments demonstrate the perfect fit of our findings. This paper makes three main contributions. First, we build testing procedures on variables entering the model along the LARS path in the general design case when the noise level can be unknown. These testing procedures are referred to as the Generalized $t$-Spacing tests (GtSt) and we prove that they have an exact non-asymptotic level (i.e., the Type I error is exactly controlled). This extends work of (Taylor et al., 2014) where the spacing test works for consecutive knots and known variance. Second, we introduce a new exact multiple false negatives test after model selection in the general design case when the noise level may be unknown. We prove that this testing procedure has exact non-asymptotic level for general design and unknown noise level. Third, we give an exact control of the false discovery rate under orthogonal design assumption. Monte Carlo simulations and a real data experiment are provided to illustrate our results in this case. Of independent interest, we introduce an equivalent formulation of the LARS algorithm based on a recursive function.
We study a fourth-order div problem and its approximation by the discontinuous Petrov-Galerkin method with optimal test functions. We present two variants, based on first and second-order systems. In both cases we prove well-posedness of the formulation and quasi-optimal convergence of the approximation. Our analysis includes the fully-discrete schemes with approximated test functions, for general dimension and polynomial degree in the first-order case, and for two dimensions and lowest-order approximation in the second-order case. Numerical results illustrate the performance for quasi-uniform and adaptively refined meshes.
In the framework of virtual element discretizazions, we address the problem of imposing non homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions in a weak form, both on polygonal/polyhedral domains and on two/three dimensional domains with curved boundaries. We consider a Nitsche's type method [43,41], and the stabilized formulation of the Lagrange multiplier method proposed by Barbosa and Hughes in [9]. We prove that also for the virtual element method (VEM), provided the stabilization parameter is suitably chosen (large enough for Nitsche's method and small enough for the Barbosa-Hughes Lagrange multiplier method), the resulting discrete problem is well posed, and yields convergence with optimal order on polygonal/polyhedral domains. On smooth two/three dimensional domains, we combine both methods with a projection approach similar to the one of [31]. We prove that, given a polygonal/polyhedral approximation $\Omega_h$ of the domain $\Omega$, an optimal convergence rate can be achieved by using a suitable correction depending on high order derivatives of the discrete solution along outward directions (not necessarily orthogonal) at the boundary facets of $\Omega_h$. Numerical experiments validate the theory.
We develop a lowest-order nonconforming virtual element method for planar linear elasticity, which can be viewed as an extension of the idea in Falk (1991) to the virtual element method (VEM), with the family of polygonal meshes satisfying a very general geometric assumption. The method is shown to be uniformly convergent for the nearly incompressible case with optimal rates of convergence. The crucial step is to establish the discrete Korn's inequality, yielding the coercivity of the discrete bilinear form. We also provide a unified locking-free scheme both for the conforming and nonconforming VEMs in the lowest order case. Numerical results validate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed numerical algorithms.
We propose a $k^{\rm th}$-order unfitted finite element method ($2\le k\le 4$) to solve the moving interface problem of the Oseen equations. Thorough error estimates for the discrete solutions are presented by considering errors from interface-tracking, time integration, and spatial discretization. In literatures on time-dependent Stokes interface problems, error estimates for the discrete pressure are usually sub-optimal, namely, $(k-1)^{\rm th}$-order, under the $L^2$-norm. We have obtained a $(k-1)^{\rm th}$-order error estimate for the discrete pressure under the $H^1$-norm. Numerical experiments for a severely deforming interface show that optimal convergence orders are obtained for $k = 3$ and $4$.
Permutation polynomials over finite fields are an interesting and constantly active research subject of study for many years. They have important applications in areas of mathematics and engineering. In recent years, permutation binomials and permutation trinomials attract people's interests due to their simple algebraic forms. By reversely using Tu's method for the characterization of permutation polynomials with exponents of Niho type, we construct a class of permutation trinomials with coefficients 1 in this paper. As applications, two conjectures of [19] and a conjecture of [13] are all special cases of our result. To our knowledge, the construction method of permutation polynomials by polar decomposition in this paper is new. Moreover, we prove that in new class of permutation trinomials, there exists a permutation polynomial which is EA-inequivalent to known permutation polynomials for all m greater than or equal to 2. Also we give the explicit compositional inverses of the new permutation trinomials for a special case.
The virtual element method (VEM) is a Galerkin approximation method that extends the finite element method to polytopal meshes. In this paper, we present two different conforming virtual element formulations for the numerical approximation of the Stokes problem that work on polygonal meshes.The velocity vector field is approximated in the virtual element spaces of the two formulations, while the pressure variable is approximated through discontinuous polynomials. Both formulations are inf-sup stable and convergent with optimal convergence rates in the $L^2$ and energy norm. We assess the effectiveness of these numerical approximations by investigating their behavior on a representative benchmark problem. The observed convergence rates are in accordance with the theoretical expectations and a weak form of the zero-divergence constraint is satisfied at the machine precision level.
We propose an enriched finite element formulation to address the computational modeling of contact problems and the coupling of non-conforming discretizations in the small deformation setting. The displacement field is augmented by enriched terms that are associated with generalized degrees of freedom collocated along non-conforming interfaces or contact surfaces. The enrichment strategy effectively produces an enriched node-to-node discretization that can be used with any constraint enforcement criterion; this is demonstrated with both multiple-point constraints and Lagrange multipliers, the latter in a generalized Newton implementation where both primal and Lagrange multiplier fields are updated simultaneously. The method's ability to ensure continuity of the displacement field -- without locking -- in mesh coupling problems, and to transfer fairly accurate tractions at contact interfaces -- without the need for contact stabilization -- is demonstrated by means of several examples. In addition, we show that the formulation is stable with respect to the condition number of the stiffness matrix by using a simple Jacobi-like diagonal preconditioner.

In addition to standard Lipschitz bounds on $f$, and conditions on the vanishing step-size sequence $\{\alpha_n\}$, it is assumed that the associated ODE is globally asymptotically stable with stationary point denoted $\theta^*$, where $\bar f(\theta)=E[f(\theta,\Phi)]$ with $\Phi\sim\pi$. The main contributions are summarized as follows: (i) The sequence $\theta$ is convergent if $\Phi$ is geometrically ergodic, and subject to compatible bounds on $f$. The remaining results are established under a stronger assumption on the Markov chain: A slightly weaker version of the Donsker-Varadhan Lyapunov drift condition known as (DV3). (ii) A Lyapunov function is constructed for the joint process $\{\theta_n,\Phi_n\}$ that implies convergence of $\{ \theta_n\}$ in $L_4$. (iii) A functional CLT is established, as well as the usual one-dimensional CLT for the normalized error $z_n:= (\theta_n-\theta^*)/\sqrt{\alpha_n}$. Moment bounds combined with the CLT imply convergence of the normalized covariance, $$ \lim_{n \to \infty} E [ z_n z_n^T ] = \Sigma_\theta, $$ where $\Sigma_\theta$ is the asymptotic covariance appearing in the CLT. (iv) An example is provided where the Markov chain $\Phi$ is geometrically ergodic but it does not satisfy (DV3). While the algorithm is convergent, the second moment is unbounded.
Developing classification algorithms that are fair with respect to sensitive attributes of the data has become an important problem due to the growing deployment of classification algorithms in various social contexts. Several recent works have focused on fairness with respect to a specific metric, modeled the corresponding fair classification problem as a constrained optimization problem, and developed tailored algorithms to solve them. Despite this, there still remain important metrics for which we do not have fair classifiers and many of the aforementioned algorithms do not come with theoretical guarantees; perhaps because the resulting optimization problem is non-convex. The main contribution of this paper is a new meta-algorithm for classification that takes as input a large class of fairness constraints, with respect to multiple non-disjoint sensitive attributes, and which comes with provable guarantees. This is achieved by first developing a meta-algorithm for a large family of classification problems with convex constraints, and then showing that classification problems with general types of fairness constraints can be reduced to those in this family. We present empirical results that show that our algorithm can achieve near-perfect fairness with respect to various fairness metrics, and that the loss in accuracy due to the imposed fairness constraints is often small. Overall, this work unifies several prior works on fair classification, presents a practical algorithm with theoretical guarantees, and can handle fairness metrics that were previously not possible.
