We explore the switching-algebraic computation of the Banzhaf indices for general and monotone or unrestricted systems. This computation is achieved via (a) two Boolean-quotient formulas that are valid when the voting system is not necessarily monotone (e.g., when coalition formation is restricted), (b) four Boolean differencing formulas and six Boolean-quotient formulas that are applicable when the decision switching function is a positively polarized unate one. We also provide switching-algebraic formulas for certain Banzhaf-related indices, including the power-to-initiate index (PII), and the power-to-prevent index (PPI), as well as satisfaction indices. Moreover, we briefly address other Banzhaf-related indices, including the Strict Power Index (SPI) and the Public Good Index (PGI). We illustrate the various indices formulas by way of four examples of voting systems, each considered first as an unrestricted monotone system and then subjected to a restriction on the formation of a coalition between two particular voters.

A growing need exists for efficient and accurate methods for detecting defects in semiconductor materials and devices. These defects can have a detrimental impact on the efficiency of the manufacturing process, because they cause critical failures and wafer-yield limitations. As nodes and patterns get smaller, even high-resolution imaging techniques such as Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) produce noisy images due to operating close to sensitivity levels and due to varying physical properties of different underlayers or resist materials. This inherent noise is one of the main challenges for defect inspection. One promising approach is the use of machine learning algorithms, which can be trained to accurately classify and locate defects in semiconductor samples. Recently, convolutional neural networks have proved to be particularly useful in this regard. This systematic review provides a comprehensive overview of the state of automated semiconductor defect inspection on SEM images, including the most recent innovations and developments. 38 publications were selected on this topic, indexed in IEEE Xplore and SPIE databases. For each of these, the application, methodology, dataset, results, limitations and future work were summarized. A comprehensive overview and analysis of their methods is provided. Finally, promising avenues for future work in the field of SEM-based defect inspection are suggested.

Generative Transformer-based models have achieved remarkable proficiency on solving diverse problems. However, their generalization ability is not fully understood and not always satisfying. Researchers take basic mathematical tasks like n-digit addition or multiplication as important perspectives for investigating their generalization behaviors. Curiously, it is observed that when training on n-digit operations (e.g., additions) in which both input operands are n-digit in length, models generalize successfully on unseen n-digit inputs (in-distribution (ID) generalization), but fail miserably and mysteriously on longer, unseen cases (out-of-distribution (OOD) generalization). Studies try to bridge this gap with workarounds such as modifying position embedding, fine-tuning, and priming with more extensive or instructive data. However, without addressing the essential mechanism, there is hardly any guarantee regarding the robustness of these solutions. We bring this unexplained performance drop into attention and ask whether it is purely from random errors. Here we turn to the mechanistic line of research which has notable successes in model interpretability. We discover that the strong ID generalization stems from structured representations, while behind the unsatisfying OOD performance, the models still exhibit clear learned algebraic structures. Specifically, these models map unseen OOD inputs to outputs with equivalence relations in the ID domain. These highlight the potential of the models to carry useful information for improved generalization.

We present an evaluation of text simplification (TS) in Spanish for a production system, by means of two corpora focused in both complex-sentence and complex-word identification. We compare the most prevalent Spanish-specific readability scores with neural networks, and show that the latter are consistently better at predicting user preferences regarding TS. As part of our analysis, we find that multilingual models underperform against equivalent Spanish-only models on the same task, yet all models focus too often on spurious statistical features, such as sentence length. We release the corpora in our evaluation to the broader community with the hopes of pushing forward the state-of-the-art in Spanish natural language processing.

We introduce a new, open-source computational general relativity framework for the Wolfram Language called Gravitas, which boasts a number of novel and distinctive features as compared to the many pre-existing computational and numerical relativity frameworks currently available within the open-source community. These include, but are not limited to: seamless integration of its powerful symbolic and numerical subsystems, and, by extension, seamless transition between analytic/continuous representations and numerical/discrete representations of arbitrary spacetime geometries; highly modular, general and extensible representations of spacetime geometries, spacetime topologies, gauge conditions, coordinate systems, matter fields, evolution equations and initial data; ability to set up and run complex numerical relativity simulations, and to perform 2D and 3D visualizations, symbolic computations and numerical analysis (including the extraction of gravitational wave signals) on the resulting data, all from within a single notebook environment; and a totally-unstructured adaptive refinement scheme based on hypergraph rewriting, allowing for exceedingly efficient discretization and numerical evolution of Cauchy initial data for a wide range of challenging computational problems involving strong relativistic field dynamics. In this first in a series of two articles covering the framework, we focus on the design and capabilities of Gravitas's symbolic subsystem, including its general and flexible handling of arbitrary geometries parametrized by arbitrary curvilinear coordinate systems (along with an in-built library of standard metrics and coordinate conditions), as well as its various high-level tensor calculus and differential geometry features. Multimodality Representation Learning, as a technique of learning to embed information from different modalities and their correlations, has achieved remarkable success on a variety of applications, such as Visual Question Answering (VQA), Natural Language for Visual Reasoning (NLVR), and Vision Language Retrieval (VLR). Among these applications, cross-modal interaction and complementary information from different modalities are crucial for advanced models to perform any multimodal task, e.g., understand, recognize, retrieve, or generate optimally. Researchers have proposed diverse methods to address these tasks. The different variants of transformer-based architectures performed extraordinarily on multiple modalities. This survey presents the comprehensive literature on the evolution and enhancement of deep learning multimodal architectures to deal with textual, visual and audio features for diverse cross-modal and modern multimodal tasks. This study summarizes the (i) recent task-specific deep learning methodologies, (ii) the pretraining types and multimodal pretraining objectives, (iii) from state-of-the-art pretrained multimodal approaches to unifying architectures, and (iv) multimodal task categories and possible future improvements that can be devised for better multimodal learning. Moreover, we prepare a dataset section for new researchers that covers most of the benchmarks for pretraining and finetuning. Finally, major challenges, gaps, and potential research topics are explored. In pace with developments in the research field of artificial intelligence, knowledge graphs (KGs) have attracted a surge of interest from both academia and industry. As a representation of semantic relations between entities, KGs have proven to be particularly relevant for natural language processing (NLP), experiencing a rapid spread and wide adoption within recent years. Given the increasing amount of research work in this area, several KG-related approaches have been surveyed in the NLP research community. However, a comprehensive study that categorizes established topics and reviews the maturity of individual research streams remains absent to this day. Contributing to closing this gap, we systematically analyzed 507 papers from the literature on KGs in NLP. Our survey encompasses a multifaceted review of tasks, research types, and contributions. As a result, we present a structured overview of the research landscape, provide a taxonomy of tasks, summarize our findings, and highlight directions for future work.

The existence of representative datasets is a prerequisite of many successful artificial intelligence and machine learning models. However, the subsequent application of these models often involves scenarios that are inadequately represented in the data used for training. The reasons for this are manifold and range from time and cost constraints to ethical considerations. As a consequence, the reliable use of these models, especially in safety-critical applications, is a huge challenge. Leveraging additional, already existing sources of knowledge is key to overcome the limitations of purely data-driven approaches, and eventually to increase the generalization capability of these models. Furthermore, predictions that conform with knowledge are crucial for making trustworthy and safe decisions even in underrepresented scenarios. This work provides an overview of existing techniques and methods in the literature that combine data-based models with existing knowledge. The identified approaches are structured according to the categories integration, extraction and conformity. Special attention is given to applications in the field of autonomous driving.

As an effective strategy, data augmentation (DA) alleviates data scarcity scenarios where deep learning techniques may fail. It is widely applied in computer vision then introduced to natural language processing and achieves improvements in many tasks. One of the main focuses of the DA methods is to improve the diversity of training data, thereby helping the model to better generalize to unseen testing data. In this survey, we frame DA methods into three categories based on the diversity of augmented data, including paraphrasing, noising, and sampling. Our paper sets out to analyze DA methods in detail according to the above categories. Further, we also introduce their applications in NLP tasks as well as the challenges.

Influenced by the stunning success of deep learning in computer vision and language understanding, research in recommendation has shifted to inventing new recommender models based on neural networks. In recent years, we have witnessed significant progress in developing neural recommender models, which generalize and surpass traditional recommender models owing to the strong representation power of neural networks. In this survey paper, we conduct a systematic review on neural recommender models, aiming to summarize the field to facilitate future progress. Distinct from existing surveys that categorize existing methods based on the taxonomy of deep learning techniques, we instead summarize the field from the perspective of recommendation modeling, which could be more instructive to researchers and practitioners working on recommender systems. Specifically, we divide the work into three types based on the data they used for recommendation modeling: 1) collaborative filtering models, which leverage the key source of user-item interaction data; 2) content enriched models, which additionally utilize the side information associated with users and items, like user profile and item knowledge graph; and 3) context enriched models, which account for the contextual information associated with an interaction, such as time, location, and the past interactions. After reviewing representative works for each type, we finally discuss some promising directions in this field, including benchmarking recommender systems, graph reasoning based recommendation models, and explainable and fair recommendations for social good.

Many tasks in natural language processing can be viewed as multi-label classification problems. However, most of the existing models are trained with the standard cross-entropy loss function and use a fixed prediction policy (e.g., a threshold of 0.5) for all the labels, which completely ignores the complexity and dependencies among different labels. In this paper, we propose a meta-learning method to capture these complex label dependencies. More specifically, our method utilizes a meta-learner to jointly learn the training policies and prediction policies for different labels. The training policies are then used to train the classifier with the cross-entropy loss function, and the prediction policies are further implemented for prediction. Experimental results on fine-grained entity typing and text classification demonstrate that our proposed method can obtain more accurate multi-label classification results.
